Superficial. Some doctors get high ratings primarily because they just smile a lot. That seems to be the case with this doctor. Dr. Katzman recommended that I NOT get an Extended Depth Of Field (i.e. EDOF) intra-ocular lens SOLEY because I had Lasik eye surgery in the past, without even questioning whether my Lasik surgery might have been a very minor correction, which it was. He could have simply asked for my pre-lasik prescription and I could have provided it. Two prominent Los Angeles eye surgeons DISAGREED with Dr. Katzman, because they asked me for my pre-Lasik prescription which showed that it was a very MINOR correction, which does NOT contra-indicate an EDOF lens. Also, when I asked him whether the VA would pay everything for my surgery, Dr. Katzman said with a big inappropriate smile that I would have to pay an additional $6000 beyond what the VA will pay for a surgery on just one eye. Also, I was astonished that Dr. Katzman THEN spent maybe one third of my appointment time joking with his assistant during my appointment time right in front of my face while I sat in stunned, disbelieving silence. Then, when I asked him questions after that, he looked at me with bulging eyes and told me that he had to go to see another patient, - and so he RAN away. ALSO, I had made it as clear as can be to the Office staff and to him that the VA would be paying for everything. NEVERTHELESS his office charged my Medicare for the exam (which requires that I pay a percentage of the charge). Not a professional and careful practice at all. read more

Dr. Katzman is the BEST! My 60 yr. old husband had cataracts and was highly recommended by his primary physician to see Dr. Katzman who also found a retina problem during his initial diagnostic visit. He then recommended a fantastic retina specialist who works closely with Dr. Katzman stabilizing the retina with eye injections in preparation and coordination with cataract removal surgeries over several months. 2 perfect surgeries later and hubby can see better than he has in years! Hubby has been a parapalegic for 38 years and never felt disabled until this loss of vision so we're grateful to Dr. Katzman and his team for restoring his vision to the best of their ability. If my review only included rating Dr Katzman I would be giving him a 5* review but it has to take into consideration his staff and they have failed miserably. A few months ago I was having a lot of discharge in my eye which really concerned me. I was prescribed an antibiotic for my eye. When I picked up the prescription, the pharmacy tech alerted me it was going to cost me $200. I am a disabled widow, on a fixed budget so I called Dr. Katzman's office to see if he might be able to prescribe an antibiotic that was more reasonable. Neither I or the pharmacist could get a hold of them. Because I was so concerned about my eye I went ahead and paid for the prescription but continued to call the office because the doctor wanted me to be on this antibiotic for three months at $200 dollars a month. It took over two weeks of calling and finally speaking with the office manager to get this very simple request resolved. She told me that should I ever experience a problem again to ask for her directly. Fast forward a few months I'm experiencing the same problem. I am in need of a refill on a prescription for my eye. I called two times within a 5 hour period only to find out there was no record of my request. So I did what I was told and asked for the office manager, no reply. There is no excuse for the office staffs ineptness. I will be asking for a referral when I return. My story has a happy ending though... I was very clear with Dr Katzman's staff that I was leaving the country and needed to get this no later than Tuesday, no reply. So I called my MD, Dr Lund and got this situation resolved within the hour. That's customer service. Happy Holiday all!! read more

Dr. Katzman has helped me so much with my eyes. First, with painful dry eye. He knew exactly what to do to fix it. Now, I am two days recovering from cataract surgery. I was so nervous going in, but the doctor was very careful about every little detail. The surgery staff was amazing. I actually wrote a review a few months back. I got cataract surgery done by this doctor at his facility. I was not satisfied with my eye surgery then and I wanted to give an update. It has gotten worse. I cannot read a thing without glasses. This happened after the cataract surgery. I have since spoken to many people who have just had cataract surgery at different places, and they are boasting about how good they can see now. I don't know what went wrong with my cataract surgery, except for the fact that they had said that my vision would be compromised. None of my relatives that I spoke to about cataract surgery say that their vision was compromised. According to most people cataract surgery is supposed to make you see better, not worse. I am very disappointed in my eye surgery. I thought I was going to a very professional and renowned doctor and apparently I wasn't. I paid over $2000. Even though I had insurance for worst vision then I started out with. I would not recommend this place. I would recommend that you just go to a simple place. I went to see Dr Katzman at Alvarado Eye La Mesa, after 2 weeks of treating at home a red, inflamed, and very irritated eye. He and his staff, including Sara and Sandra, got me in to see him that afternoon, and after a thorough examination determined it needed intervention for it to drain. Arrangements were made in a very timely manner. He and his staff stayed late on a Friday night, sending me home with all my questions answered, and with relief I hadn't felt in 2 weeks. Dr. Katzman and his team took spectacular care of me from start to finish. I had Lasik done on both eyes a month ago, and my vision is fantastic and my eyes feel completely normal. I had my initial consult at the Coronado Office, my pre op and post op appointments at the La Mesa location, and the procedure done at the La Jolla location. There was no lapse in communication between the offices, they provided continuous attentive care. Dr. Katzman had a very busy schedule, but there wasn't a moment I felt that he was rushing to finish my appointments. He made sure to answer all of my questions to satisfaction and provided some additional insight on other frequently asked questions or concerns. I was so afraid to have my right eye done after a Sharp surgeon left me with problems in that eye after surgery. I waited and interviewed different doctors for about 2 years. I had to have a macular surgeon at Scripps give me a shot into my eye because I had fluid on my macular due to the first surgeon. I met with him this year after passing the 3 year mark from my first surgery and he said I probably should not wait much longer to have the right eye done. I went to a doctor at Scripps and at UCSD, all came with excellent references, however when I met with them, their "bedside" manner was just arrogant and rude, dismissing me and not giving me enough information. They do not like questions! I read about Dr Katzman and found him to be, not only way more skilled and up to date on lasers and new techniques of eye surgery, but a very nice person and good communicator. Because my left eye does not have the perfect vision I thought I would get, he suggested and explained why removing my astigmatism would help me see better now and in the future to compensate for the left eye. I really did not understand prior to this what and how an astigmatism worked in the eye. After listening to him and doing reading on line, I realized how right he was and opted for the cataract surgery and the reshaping of my cornea with a laser. I think the other doctors did not suggest this because they do not have skills with lasers and they are , in my opinion ,an assembly line situation; get as many patients in and scheduled for surgery during a day a possible. Dr Katzman takes his time and never got annoyed when I know I repeated my questions because some of the information was new to me. He has a lovely sense of humor and after 2 meetings, I felt he was so easy to communicate with and I felt completely relaxed in his office and before the surgery when he came to talk to me. No fear going in and that is an unusual feeling for an anxious person like me. Don't trust your vision to any doctor with out at least seeing Dr Katzman! People often say how easy cataract surgery is; since mine did not go well I have met so many other people who have had problems; some worse than mine. Just don't immediately go to who ever your doctor suggests. Bad move. That was my mistake. read more

Dr. Katzmann recently removed cataracts from both my eyes (2 weeks apart, the most recent yesterday). My surgeries had to be rescheduled due to the unavoidable COVID closures, so my natural lenses were pretty far past their freshness date! (Everything had gotten a bit fuzzy and yellowed, and I didn't feel safe driving at night.) Prior to surgery, I wore both contacts and reading glasses. The Alvarado Eye Associates office staff are friendly, and appointments are kept in good time, which I truly appreciate - in the time of COVID, I don't want to sit in a waiting room with strangers, even masked ones, any longer than I have to. His technicians (who do the initial tests) are skilled, kind and very helpful. At our first meeting, Dr. Katzmann went over the various lens options that would be appropriate for me, as well as the pros and cons (and expenses) thereof. He explained the surgical procedures well, and answered the numerous questions I had. He also has a good sense of humor and a reassuring and cheerful manner - these traits definitely help the patient feel more confident and less anxious. Once surgical facilities were open again, his staff called me and we rescheduled. My eyes were measured for my new lenses a few weeks prior to the surgeries. The outpatient surgeries went very well. Dr. Katzmann has obviously done a lot of these procedures. Mine went suprisingly quickly and without the need for much sedation. I didn't have any pain or complications afterwards, and I discovered I was able to see much better within a day of each surgery. (The increase in intensity of color is really amazing, and today, the day after the 2nd surgery, I can read books with relatively small print without glasses.) I'm very glad that I chose Dr. Katzmann for cataract surgery, and I recommend him to anyone who needs cataract surgery. read more

Reading nearly all the reviews i am happy you all had good results with your cataract surgeries, i however did not. Dr Katzman implanted a IOL multi focal lens in my right, my vision resulted in being worse than was pre-op. I went to two other drs. and both consistently explained i was not a good candidate for this lens because years before had PRK Lasik surgery. Both Drs told me "I would have not selected that lens for you". My next mistake was to let Dr Katzman remove and replace the lens with a mono focal lens. After the second surgery and one day post-op dr. Katzman informed me that during the surgery he had punctured the Vitreous Humour and that i needed emergency surgery that he was unable to perform. Fortunately, Dr Pinney at Kaiser while assisted by a retna specialist performed the emergency surgery, fixed the damage, replaced the lens and restored my vision. I have never written a review before and it is not my desire to "bash" anyone here and i do take some responsibility by not doing more research myself. I would suggest you do the same. read more

The powerfulness of sight was always real but it ratcheted up notches that defy expression. I glanced around the room after surgery. Everything has edges from the clock on the wall to the gurney to the nurse. Colors are not just bright but brilliant. Individuals have very different eye color not just brown versus blue. A car that looked orange to me is actually ruby red. The sky is more vast and clear, more dense and airy. I feel an exuberance, a bursting of joy while also feeling like a little kid. Look at the plant. See the caterpillar. The first day after the first right eye surgery was spent in awe. Dozing on the couch watching TV, glancing out the window, enjoying the dogs. Daytime driving is delightful. Signage is visible from great distances. Gone is the game of don't see it, see it, now you don't. Seeing is believing. The prospect of getting my left eye done was joyful. Wearing glasses since I was 4yrs old, I was exceedingly fearful of surgery on my eyes. Dr. Katzman and all the office staff were understanding of my questions, concerns, and repeated searching for information. Their patience was amazing. Knowing what I know now -- I'd encourage everyone to have your cataracts removed and get the lenses that give you the best vision you can. I have never seen my own face (that I can remember) without glasses. Going into a shower and groping for the right bottle. Funny putting head on pillow and quickly feeling my face thinking -- left the glasses on cause I can still see. The adjustments have been wonderful. The process at the Del Mar facility was excellent. Intake at the window to the eye prep area and how the folks worked efficiently and kindly. I did wished to be lightly sedated and was completely accommodated. At this age and stage, to have a phenomenon occur that is so incredibly life altering is wondrous. I encourage anyone to trust in the skill of Dr Katzman. He will let you know what will work for you and what won't. He is direct, gentle, kind, and knowledgeable. For me there is no substitute for competence and Lee Katzman has that covered. The bonus is that he is a nice guy and the office staff are nice too. It's amazing how the halos, and fuzzy edges, and change of tone creep up on you until it's gone. Dr. Lee Katzman removed cataracts in both eyes and replaced with AcrySof IQ PanOptix Toric trifocal lens. Prior to the laser surgeries, I was unable to read residential street signs, huge freeway signs or tell the color of stoplights! The day after each surgery I had 20/20 vision. Surgeries lasted less than 15 minutes. No glasses required for any distance. I would highly recommend Dr. Katzman.
