Also I have worn glasses since I was 8 years old and I told them my vision has worsened lately but they shrugged that off too and said the one eye that I use for reading did not need correction. I felt the attitude overall was dismissive. I left there determined to go elsewhere and basically ignore this appointment. I expect some basic empathy and more explanation. The office was not crowded so that is not an excuse. This office was highly recommended but I have told the person who recommended it that my experience indicated lack of care for the patient and that I would not recommend it again.

I do however have 20/20 so he explained that tho I may struggle in more dimly lit areas, glasses were not necessary! Gave me a prescription anyways in case I wanted to see clearer, but assured me my eyes are developed enough to not need any help currently. Great place! Dr. Katzman recommended that I NOT get an Extended Depth Of Field (i.e. EDOF) intra-ocular lens SOLEY because I had Lasik eye surgery in the past, without even questioning whether my Lasik surgery might have been a very minor correction, which it was. He could have simply asked for my pre-lasik prescription and I could have provided it. Two prominent Los Angeles eye surgeons DISAGREED with Dr. Katzman, because they asked me for my pre-Lasik prescription which showed that it was a very MINOR correction, which does NOT contra-indicate an EDOF lens. Also, when I asked him whether the VA would pay everything for my surgery, Dr. Katzman said with a big inappropriate smile that I would have to pay an additional $6000 beyond what the VA will pay for a surgery on just one eye. Also, I was astonished that Dr. Katzman THEN spent maybe one third of my appointment time joking with his assistant during my appointment time right in front of my face while I sat in stunned, disbelieving silence. Then, when I asked him questions after that, he looked at me with bulging eyes and told me that he had to go to see another patient, - and so he RAN away. ALSO, I had made it as clear as can be to the Office staff and to him that the VA would be paying for everything. NEVERTHELESS his office charged my Medicare for the exam (which requires that I pay a percentage of the charge). Not a professional and careful practice at all.

If I have a question they are more than happy to take the time to answer or explain the diagnosis and the progress or lack of progress of a what is called a freckle in the retina in one of my eyes. The fact that doctor also teaches at UCSD insures me that he is up to date on his diagnosis and any procedure that may need to be performed in the future.
