Jeni Breen Tango Academy is a wonderful and amazing place to learn the intricate dance of Argentine Tango. The teachers, Jeni and Matthew, are delightful and the student body is welcoming. I stumbled upon the school from an online deal several moons ago and was so impressed with the quality of the classes and how mentally stimulating they were. Many activity or art form classes in NYC feel over-diluted or factory-assembly-line-esque. Not so at this tango school. The classes are well structured, with clear goals and directions. With all honesty, Jeni is one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life so far. Elegant without haughtiness. She is effective and direct while being very encouraging and kind. Furthermore, Jeni and Mathew, they enable and inspire their students to learn. One can sense their genuine desire for the students to excel, from the frequent and valuable personalized feedback they provide during class. I highly recommend Jeni's Tango Academy if you are interested in tango. In spite of the fact that "....it takes two to tango.", no need to worry about attending solo, since there will always be a rotation of partnering up with your fellow classmates. This tango school sets itself apart from the others with a very crucial trait: Jeni and Matthew very genuinely take a personal interest in the growth of their students. That is, they actually go out of their way to spend the time and individual attention to make sure you that improve, given they see that you DO want to improve. I've tried a few other studios, and I always got the feeling that teachers often just go through the motions; they love tango, but not necessarily teaching. Jeni and Matthew love both, and you feel it during every moment of their class; day in, day out. Their enthusiasm doesn't fade. This has made all the difference in my ~1 year of learning Tango (with no prior dance experience), during which I felt I've learned at a substantially faster rate than I would have otherwise. As a matter of fact, when people ask me how long I've been dancing, my answer is usually met with disbelief. I credit this wholly to Jeni's approach to teaching, which is forgiving enough to let you enjoy the dance and stay encouraged, but also disciplined enough to keep pushing you to the next level. Not only that, but Jeni's personality seems to attract and retain the most grounded, multi-faceted, and wholesome crowd of students. Although I am a prolific Yelp reviewer, this review was the one that went through the greatest number of drafts as it is not easy to capture the essence of multifaceted individuals whose talents create collective opportunities which transcend the banal and short-sighted pursuit of goal-attainment without a clear intention. As Hemingway once stated; "never mistake motion for action." First, I invite the reader to peruse the reviews that have already been left for this fine tango academy. What is most telling is the meticulous quality of the writing which reflects the human caliber of the authors. Like attracts like and this institution attracts a lovely element. Every reviewer penned well thought out praises that celebrate the non "cookie cutter" approach which ceases to exist when instructors embrace personal attention in the context of quality group teachings. I stumbled across the Jeni Breen Tango Academy by way of a Groupon which was gifted by a group of friends who felt my life was on hold as I am an only child who is a caregiver to his elderly parents. Jeni Breen's charisma, warmth and desire to share her knowledge immediately impressed me. However, I also noted more attributes given what was described to me as the "important" elements of teaching the tango. One gets the impression that Jeni and co-teacher Matthew both seem to responsibly conceptualize this dance as a means of communication which elucidates how the invisible aspects of life take on a magical and palpable form when we are grounded- both literally and figuratively. I recall Johnny Carson once noted that the most important element in comedy is timing. I feel timing is relevant in pedagogical and communicative forums as well. I make my living in education and my vantage point confirms that Jeni is a master teacher. Her timing is perfectly complemented by an uncanny ability to partialize and deconstruct the complexities of dance theory into practical implementation. Unbeknownst to her, Jeni has also mesmerized me with her spontaneous analogies which are always delivered with humble panache and relentless grace. I admire individuals who can make us conceive the abstract by way of the selfless verbal stimulus known as economy of language. These examples which are intended to clarify and are not maliciously presented for the purposes of self-aggrandizement are as beautiful and inspiring as Olivier reciting a Shakespeare sonnet or Carlos Gardel singing "Volver." High praise indeed. A teacher with comprehensive skills is a psychologist who understands the science of inter and intra-personal behaviors. Jeni identified how one of my female partners seemed to feel comfortable with me even though I may have overlooked that which is obvious. Her keen sense of observation reveals a plethora of talents which radiate in a charming manner. In this context of disciplinary goodwill, students seem to try their best so the teacher is proud. Jeni's sense of responsibility in her obvious vocation and indefatigable patience inspires respect which in turn engenders loyalty from the student body. In line with that humanistic approach, Jeni knew exactly when I needed some sincere TLC by way of a gentle caress or a respectful and transparent verbal admonishment which was always laced with truth. Research has shown that effective teachers have high expectations of their students but I have always maintained they need to also know what motivates them. Empty, non-selective praise does not encourage hearing what you NEED to hear for the purposes of improvement. The personal attention you receive in this class is an example to those in our society who still feel that unrestrained capitalism is the answer to societal ills. We are all human beings (not statistics) and are moved by pain or pleasure. However, individual subtleties abound. For some, desperation leads to motivation and for others they need to be dared right on the spot. Jeni knew exactly how to galvanize my attention and move me; again with impeccable timing. I have clearly fostered great respect and affection for Jeni in less than thirty days and that says a lot given the quality of persons who surround me in my personal and professional spheres. In the spirit of objectivity, I offer one sincere suggestion to prospective students: concentrate and focus completely on the lesson to get the most out of the experience of learning a dance which does not have to be as complicated as people make it out to be as Jeni aptly notes. You will be delighted to realize that a dancing academy can provide magical opportunities to embody mindfulness and the power of being fully absorbed in an activity. I did intro tango here for the last month $85 for unlimited times during the month. I was a bit skeptical at first about the group people would be like but once I went to class I was quickly relieved -- the class was very diverse with a even mix of women and men. Some couples and a good mix of singles. Every practice dance you change partners, so you pretty much get to know everyone in the class. This is really nice because you don't have to worry about having a partner because one will be there for you. Overall it was a great time. Jeni the instructor is fantastic!! She's always super positive. She made the class really enjoyable and fun. I liked Thursday night class the best because they have an hour of open dance afterwords, they light the rooms with white lights and candles and sometimes even have wine. I would definitely recommend this for anybody who wants to learn dance it's low impact and it's tons of fun. read more

Jeni is absolutely a gem! She is so pleasant to work with and really breaks the dance down in a very simple, and easy to digest manner. Even if you have never danced any kind of tango before, she will have you dancing the basics in a months time. You also do not need a partner when you join. Each class she rotates the men with the women- as a result, I was able to partner with everyone in each class several times. I found this tango school through groupon, and have absolutely continued on to the pre-intermediate classes. I highly, highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn tango. Bonus! On Thursday nights there is a "practica" session after class (free from 9:30-11 PM) for anyone who wants to stick around, practice, make some friends, and have a glass of wine! read more

During a workshop at another dance school, an Argentine guest teacher said to me, "Somebody has taught you really well, the old-fashioned way. Who taught you?" It was my pleasure to give credit to Jeni Breen, who at that time was still teaching at the Sandra Cameron Dance Center. Sandra's studio was a phenomenon, but now that it is closed, Jeni Breen Tango Academy carries on the instruction in tango program. What I like about Jeni's teaching style is, first and foremost, her understanding of what represents good and beautiful in tango. Her approach would appeal to those who view tango as a genteel, elegant, smart social dance. Jeni emphasizes good form and solid basics, which she has learned through her ballet training and studying tango with the masters. Not once in her classes have I seen anything that was not in good taste. Jeni packs a powerful personality into a small frame and holds firm control over the class. She understands well both the mechanics and aesthetics of movement and can communicate them clearly. She also understands keenly how people learn, and her classes progress along a well thought-out course that emphasizes walking and turns before introducing more advanced elements. Watching how new beginners in Jeni's classes grow from zero dancing skills to meaningful lead-follow in just few classes is a marvel. Jeni is also well known in NYC milongas as an excellent DJ, whose set lists are always thoughtful, tasteful, and inspiring. Her classes attract surprisingly gracious people and the atmosphere in class is always pleasant, friendly, and helpful. In tango, as in many other arts, beginners study the basics, while the masters -- study the basics! Come to Jeni's studio if you want to learn the basics, which is to say, if you want to learn the tango. You can always pick up "fluffy" moves elsewhere, but this school is an excellent place to learn the core fundamentals of the dance, which are so important, whether you're a leader or a follower. Jeni and Matthew (who is also a superb instructor and a terrific Milonga stylist) are wonderful teachers -- warm, thoughtful, and deeply knowledgeable about the dance. They are committed both to the genuine transmission of Argentine Tango and to their students' development as dancers. They are always ready to take some time to address a student's question or concern. I've been studying tango with Jeni for about two-and-a-half years now, and I love to go out dancing, confident that I have been well schooled in tango (and almost as important, the etiquette of the dance). I've already received more compliments on my dancing than I can remember, (including more than a few from ladies who trained in Argentina), and I owe it all to Jeni and Matthew. My wife and I joined Jeni's class in basic Argentine tango last May after years of talking about exploring this beautiful dance, and I'm extremely glad we did.
