Jenn's work basically wallpapers my house....I am not exaggerating. Jenn has shot my engagement, wedding, maternity, birth and newborn photos. She has been there to capture every important event in my life for the past five years and yet, I have never thought to write a review for her because I always simply thought that her work spoke for itself. I mean, all you have to do is look at her website and you can just see her talent. Jenn is a consummate professional- easy to communicate with, returns photos in a clear and reasonable timeframe, has a wonderful platform on which to share photos and makes every session comfortable and easy. But, after having her photograph our birth and newborn, I got the opportunity to truly see how incredible she is. Giving birth was the most intimate experience of my life. As a woman and a mother, Jenn really honored that experience. She was in our hospital room for hours and captured priceless memories as I labored. When my body stopped cooperating and I had to have an unplanned c-section, Jenn came into the OR and caught my son's first moments outside of the womb as he entered the world. Having an unplanned surgery was overwhelming and I struggled a bit in the first weeks post partum to process my birth experience. It did not go at all as I had planned or hoped (other than the most important aspect: having a healthy baby). Being able to look back on the photographs that Jenn captured from labor all the way to recovery, really helped me to process and celebrate the journey. Jenn even came back to the hospital, two days later, to snap a few more images of my son's first days. Those days are a blur- I am so glad to have those precious moments preserved! When Jenn came to our home, two weeks later, for newborn photos, she was incredibly patient. She waited as I nursed (several times) and she was so gentle and nurturing with our baby. She was able to created and capture so many sweet moments of our little one. I never want to forget the beautiful details of this magical time- but sleep deprivation + hormones had another plan! Jenn Bartell was the photographer for my wedding on April 8! When we started searching out wedding vendors, I was drawn to Jenn because of her 'candid' photo style. We scheduled a time to go to her studio and speak with her and enjoyed everything that we heard. Jenn worked with us to customize a package that included everything we wanted and nothing that we didn't. We had an engagement session a couple months later where Jenn took us on a whirlwind tour of downtown Sacramento with her husband and helped us take a variety of pictures that we used as table markers at our wedding. It was our vision and a lot of work for Jenn, but she made it happen perfectly! I still use photos from that session for Facebook, my phone wallpaper, PC wallpaper, everything! We got photos from our session in a very timely manner and had an easy time accessing them. The next time we saw Jenn was at our wedding. We had everything communicated by e-mail, so the day of, she showed up (with her husband as a second photographer) and just started shooting. She caught a lot of things that I had forgotten about! When she gave us our photos, she did so with a variety of effects, black and white and color that gave some real contrast to the event. I really like Jenn's photography. I enjoy the way that she uses light and her ability to pick flattering but casual/candid photos. Oh where do I begin. Jenn shot our engagement and our wedding pics...and they were beyond amazing. Like I didn't even recognize myself in some of them haha! I looked like a model! And, well I'm 5 feet on a tall day and it's kind of hard for me to look like a model :) She just captures you in the perfect light and angle...I couldn't imagine looking more amazing on my wedding day and Jenn's photography is the key!! I went to high school with Jenn and when it came time to choose a photographer, we contacted her to meet. While we had planned on looking at other photographers as well, we were so impressed with her that we decided there was no need to look anywhere else. She has a great eye both artistically and capturing the moment. She captured things at our wedding that were very emotional for both my husband and I. She also helped us achieve our goal with the posed wedding photos. We didn't want all our wedding photos to be traditional so she did a great job of making our family photos and those with just my husband and I look artist and not all "typical". The photographs and her editing were exactly what we wanted. Some traditional for our family members and some more creative for something different. She used interesting angles, filters, etc. to give us unique shots. She was also very fast at getting them done so we could get to our reception! One thing I especially appreciated was her paying attention to capturing a special moment with my grandfather and I. I had told her what I wanted and she delivered it perfectly. Jenn did the getting ready shots with me and her husband was with my husband. They did a great job of getting photos without it being stressful for us while we got ready. She was on time and both friendly and very professional to work with. I would highly recomend her. Jenn photographed our daughter Arabella at a fundraiser for Tubman House at ArtBeast a week ago- all the proceeds were donated to charity. In 5 short minutes Jenn got awesome photos of my daughter that totally captured her personality. I liked that she didn't try to force her into anything and asked her to do things rather than order her around - if she was distracted by something she worked it into the shot. When Arabella was distracted by noise coming from a room to the side instead of trying to get her to look back at the camera she translated it into a beautiful profile shot. The other best thing about Jenn other than her great eye/demeanor with kids is that the print prices are REASONABLE (i.e. 8x10 prints are $15 each / 20" x 24" canvas is $125!). She also offers the "negatives" (actually digital rights since these are digital photos) for a very reasonable price - we bought this intending to print out the photos on our own and are thrilled to have the rights to all the photos for later but we found the prices were so reasonable for prints on her site that I think we will just order them straight from her. In contrast I have had Arabella's pictures done by two other photographers and while they took awesome photos the prices were exorbitant. In those other two cases the session fee was marked down to $99 or so but then the print prices were exorbitant (i.e. around $400 for a canvas / around $80 for a 8 x 10 - I sh*t you not!) and you could only order certain shots if you ordered a certain blend of prints / yada yada yada. Then they just sit and look at you while you and your husband squirm and try to figure out which shots you aren't going to buy which means a beautiful photo of your little girl will be destroyed (because they destroy all images in 45 days dontcha know?) and the whole thing leaves you feeling extorted rather than happy that you have the pretty pictures that you did get. It was like buying a gym membership or a used car - not fun. I much prefer the way Jenn does business with a higher upfront fee for the session time (her website says normal portrait sessions start at $289) to get lots of good shots and pay for the photographer's eye than have the rights to those shots and print them out in whatever way I choose or order them direct from the photographer for a reasonable price rather than pay a 500%+ markup fee for paper and ink. This review is more than 2 years overdue!!We hired her to be our wedding photographer because we loved her work, and she seems very nice and professional.But getting our wedding album from her is more stressful than planning our wedding!!After 5 months of not hearing from her( she promised us she will have the wedding album in 3 months), I left messages for her , she returned the calls after 2 weeks, said she was out of town and where she was there's no phone signals for 2 weeks. She then said , she will work on our wedding album, it's next on the list.I checked on the status again after a few weeks and she said she was sorry she was backed up, her significant other lost his job and she got married etc.After a few weeks, I called her again to see when we can have the album and she said "you did not receive it"?I said, I did not received anything. Apparently she sent it but never told me???No follow up until I called her??She said she will reorder it and send it "again" as "it probably" got lost !! After a few weeks again, she said she have the copy, called me Saturday night and ask if I can pick it up in her house. We are not able to pick it up that night so I told her if we can drop by Sunday afternoon,, she said she will be out of town for a week and leaving Sunday morning,said if she can drop it off in the front of our house that night to which I said no way!!After waiting more than a year for the album( I had a baby already)she will tell me , she will leave it at our front door???I don't want to give her to give me the excuse" someone probably took it from your door"!!She ended up delivering the album to us but by the time we had it , I was so frustrated by the way she handled this that I don't even want to see her . I forgot to mention she was not wearing a proper attire as a wedding photographer in our wedding, one of our guest even noticed it and mentioned it to us. I'm glad that other people have a very pleasant experience with her but mine was a nightmare.. read more

I met Jenn though a Deeda hair salon. She does a ton of awesome work for them, from photo shoots and fashion shows, they use her for everything and they highly recommend her. I deiced to use her for my pregnancy pictures and along with my newborn pictures. My first shoot with her went so well and she captured every detail I wanted. I came with inspiration pictures and she added her own little twist to things and made my vision even better. She truly is an artist!! When we had or newborn pictures with her I had a few inspiration photos as well and she nailed them to the tee. she was soo good and gentle with our baby. She new how to position him without disrupting his sleep and the whole shoot went very smooth. I forgot to mention she was 9 months pregnant when she did our new born shoot ans she still rocked it out! I've been so absolutely happy with her work I deiced to book her for my wedding this coming up summer. I'm giving her free range to do whatever she like with few requests, but I trust her opinion so much that I want her to be an artist and have fun with my wedding. She has always communicated well with me and never left me hanging. With (good) photographers I expect pictures to take a little longer to get to me because of all the details they put into editing the pictures and wanting to make them perfect. I can imagine when your photographer and well known that you become super busy and I'm sure it can get overwhelming. Jenn has always sent me some fun teaser photos to show off before she has completely edited my whole shoot and I'm happy with that. I'd rather my photos be perfect then just alright. I can't say enough good things about Jenn. I needed to get new head shots. I was a little nervous because I hate getting my picture taken. Jenn was so friendly and immediately put me at ease. I have been meaning to write this review for over a year now, and finally am getting around to it! Jenn did an excellent job from start to finish with our engagement photos and our wedding photos. I remember when I first reached out to a few photographers over the phone...Jenn was extremely kind and warm over the phone. Without any real hesitation, we decided to do business with her. She met us in North Beach in San Francisco for our engagement photos ( mind you, she was pregnant and did not complain once ) and was a TROOPER traveling to different places around the city etc.-- we had tons of fun with her! Her and her husband worked together at our wedding and everyone was so pleased with her professionalism, patience, and expertise. And when I say everyone- I'm referring to both sides of the family, my bridesmaids, and even my hair and makeup gals commenting on how easily she fit in and was a blast to work with! Jenn was our wedding photographer this past fall and we have nothing but amazing things to say about working with her and how our wedding photos turned out. On the actual wedding day she and her partner were a seamless part of the event. They clearly had a plan for our wedding and knew exactly what to do and what the timing should be in order to capture all of the photos we wanted. One of the best things about working with Jenn was she helped me really think through our timeline. Because my husband and I chose not to do a first look, I knew we were going to be a bit pressed for time with the sunset/etc. and Jenn helped me coordinate what photos we could take before the wedding to save time and helped make sure we were organized and moving smoothly during the photos with family & big group shots. Jenn has a clear vision and makes you feel very comfortable in front of the camera. Another great thing about Jenn was how thoughtful she was in preparing for our wedding day. Jenn had never shot a wedding at the church where we were married or been to the venue where our reception was and she went out of her way (not close to her house!) the week leading up to our wedding to spend time in both locations and get ideas for where to take the best shots. Jenn was always quick to respond, easy to talk to, answered all of our questions, and really listened to what we were saying and the vision of our day. Finally, our pictures turned out so beautiful and we could not be happier.
