Great Location & Warm Water, But Pack Light and Bring Bug Spray…read more Well, it's time for my family's annual camping trip! This year we wanted to check out Bass Lake, CA. There are several spots around the lake, but since we were booking through Recreation.gov, we landed on Spring Cove. I always try to book campsites close to the water, and on paper, this campground looked perfect. The Good Prime Lake Access: The location is super close to the water. You just have to cross the main road, walk down a little hill, and there you are! We selected sites nearest the road to ensure easy access to the lake, which is our main source of entertainment. The kids absolutely loved it. The water was warm enough to swim for hours, but cool enough to be refreshing in the summer heat. Bonus Perks: We loved that our parking permit came with a 15% discount for boat rentals at Miller's Landing Resort (just about a mile down the road). We used it to book a half-day boat rental, and it was easily one of the highlights of the trip! Awesome Camp Host: Shout out to Patrick for being incredibly cool and helpful. The Not-So-Good The Bathroom Situation: The flushing toilets were shut down, meaning we had to use porta-potties. Yuck! I am not a fan and found it pretty stressful. Thankfully, Miller's Landing was close enough to "take care of business" when needed. Yes, I'm weird, but I just can't with the porta-potties. Tiny Sites: The sites themselves are small. We are used to the larger, less crowded campgrounds up north at higher elevations, so we had to seriously adjust our layout for our party's three campsites and varying tent sizes. When the website says "small tent," they really mean small tent. Don't try bringing a mansion tent here unless you want to be moving picnic benches around just to make it fit. Mosquitoes: There were a lot of them. Be sure to pack plenty of bug repellent options. Despite the tight squeeze and the bathroom bummer, it was a great trip. I think we might have just found our new annual spot!

We stayed in back-in, FHU site 42 which is in the only row of 50 Amp sites, which are near the entrance. The site was completely level! The electric, water and sewer connections worked as expected and were well placed. There is absolutely NO WiFi. AT&T, Verizon and TMobile cellular had full bars throughout the park. Cable is available, but all I could get was Telemundo. The sites were roomy enough. The 30amp FHU sites farther inside the park appeared roomier though. They also back up to the rivers edge. The Fresno River runs along the length of the park and at this time of year, there are multiple waterfalls that create very relaxing white noise. The campground was very quiet and easy to relax in. The office is well stocked with all the RV essentials and Katie the manager, was very helpful and friendly. The maintenance guy was super helpful and answered all my questions throughout the day. There is some room for the kids to ride bikes and there are two rarely used horseshoe pits. The park is dated and needs some TLC, but it is in Oakhurst, on the Fresno River, and near the southern entrance to Yosemite. The rustic feel is very nice. I would stay again when in the area.

There are only about six tent sites as compared to numerous RV sites plus cabins and yurts. I am giving the business 2/5 stars. This is due to the extreme lack of safety promotion regarding regular black bears on site. We have tent-camped eight other times in bear country. In all circumstances, we were provided with and used a bear-proof food storage locker. We were coached by staff about bear safety (e.g., no food in tent or car, use bear locker and garbage receptacles, make noise if they approach, etc.). In these other settings, we observed multiple signs throughout the campgrounds reiterating bear safety. We were provided with dishwashing stations to minimize food residue on sites. While camping in bear country, we never saw a bear but knew to be quite cautious. When we checked in at Outdoorsy Yosemite, I was rapidly oriented to the facility such as the locations for bathroom, pool, etc. The employee then stated, "Keep your food out of your tent. Put away your food in your car when you're not at your site" and shifted to the next topic. I read between the lines, thinking, "I suppose we must be in bear country." As I flipped through the paper packet, I saw the alert I posted here. I observed two signs about bears in the campground. During our first evening we were informed by members that bears are regular visitors. The woman showed us multiple pictures of recent bear sightings, such as at campsites and outside the lounge. We realized we should be more careful than instructed. At 10:30 PM we put away all our food in our car. We had the trunk open for ten minutes as we waited for our teen to return with his toiletry bag. The remaining family was in our tent, just three feet from our car. I heard an extremely loud crash and looked out. An older cub had heaved out our cooler from the trunk and was scavenging. We emerged from the tent, making noise. The bear moved ten feet away. We got on the car horn and continued to make loud noises. It moved out of sight. The next morning, we saw a bear wandering the campground road. That evening, at about 10 PM, we were in the lounge enjoying a movie. My teen daughter returned to our site to get her water bottle. There was no food out - all was in the car with the trunk closed. She stopped short when she saw a very large bear (about 7 feet high) standing on hind legs at our picnic table, sniffing around, about 25 feet away. She slowly backed away and thankfully made her way back safely to our family. The next morning, we heard a bear in the greenbelt adjacent to our site. This was very unnerving. On our last morning, I asked to speak to the director, Kim. I appreciated her time and listening ear. I raised my concerns about the proximity and frequency of bears. She responded that this is bear country and that there are frequent bear sightings in nearby areas as well. Since this is not public property, the government cannot help and we will always have bears here. I stated that I completely understand; however, I asked what CAN be done, what IS in your control. I shared how we have tent camped in bear country, followed the strict and clear protocols, and never seen a bear. At Outdoorsy Yosemite, where bears are regularly sighted, the management by staff is noticeably passive. I had to infer that this is bear country from the orientation by the employee. There are no bear lockers. There are minimal signs. There is an attitude that it's normal to have black bears roaming around campsites, snooping in campsites, and that nothing bad will happen. I understand that these are not grizzlies, but they are still wild animals who deserve our respect and may not always act in a safe manner. From what I have read from the national parks, the more bears are around people, the more desensitized they get, the more they return, and the greater chance of incidence. It's quite concerning to know that you are tent camping in an area where bears regularly roam. I told Kim that although we loved the facility, we could not stay here again unless there were bear lockers and assurance of active communication about the regular bears on site. She said she is looking into bear lockers for tent sites only due to the expense and would share my input with the board. They do have bear-safe garbage receptacles. We learned from a member that we can wash dishes in the lounge; this would be an important feature for staff to highlight. Among other changes, all sites need bear lockers since bears can get into vehicles; if not, then at least provide centrally located, shared lockers for RVs & individual lockers for tent sites. I cannot recommend this venue - too stressful & unsafe!

Furthermore, our site had an uneven and rotten picnic table, and the fire-pit was nearly full with ash and sand which I had to clean out. It was also disappointing to encounter a staff member, specifically an older, larger Hispanic woman, who had an issue with authority. At one point during our stay, I returned to the site after my baby had been throwing up to grab some things for his stomach. I was driving around a corner at approximately 10 miles per hour (yes, I know, 5 mph over the posted speed limit), when this staff member came flying around the corner in the middle of the road, causing her to swerve and nearly hit me, with my child in the car. Rather than accepting that we were both going a little too fast, she threatened to kick me off the grounds and chewed me out for speeding while she herself was disregarding their own rules. Overall, paying $43 a night during the slow season, with no complementary services and having to clean up the site before we could even set up, made the experience very disappointing. I think paying the extra $5 for a nearby campground that offers firewood, kind staff, and a clean, well-kept site would be much more worth it. 2 stars for at least having a nice bathroom. Summary of frustration: The cramped site layout, poor maintenance, and staff's poor handling of a stressful situation made the experience feel far below expectations, especially for the price. The lack of amenities and cleanliness only added to the frustration.

The folks working at the counter for the boat rental were friendly and helpful. I wish I could say the same thing for the dude's working at the actual boat dock. They gave us weird vibes. Like, have y'all never seen Asians renting a boat? WTF are you guys glaring at? WTF is so funny? It was irritating AF! Thankfully, the time on the water was really fun! The kids had such a good time zipping around on the water and we also rented a tube that we towed off the back of the pontoon boat. Yes, it's not a speed boat, but it was fast enough for the kids to enjoy being towed around. The next day we went back to Miller's Landing to use their public showers. Five dollars for five minutes. Make it quick! The shower's were clean, water was warm, or cold if you prefer, but the line can get long. There is no complimentary shampoo, soap, or conditioner, so be sure to BYO. It was a good option for those of us who were tent camping that NEEDED a shower. Although we didn't dine in the restaurant, we did get drinks, ice cream, and milkshake's from the café, all of which were really tasty. We will definitely plan to incorporate a boat rental, showers, and meals at Miller's Landing when we plan our annual camping trip for next year!

So we rented a boat on Bass Lake, and man, it was awesome. The crew was extremely friendly and accommodating, and the boat itself--a medium pontoon with an inner tube--was great. The shop didn't offer much in the way of actual provisions for the boat ride, unless your idea of lunch is chips, Doritos, donuts, and 75 varieties of soda. Basically, everything you need to give three children a four-hour sugar high in the middle of a lake. I would have loved some sandwiches, fruit, or anything that didn't have a cartoon mascot on the package. The price is where the missing star went. You're looking at around $500 for the boat and inner tube for four hours, and then you have to pay for the gas on top of that. Maybe that's standard practice, but it felt like a lot for four hours. For the whole day? Sure. But four hours? My bank account is still kicking me in the balls. That said, Bass Lake was unbelievably nice to swim in, and diving off the boat in the middle of that gorgeous lake was incredible for the kids. The inner tube was the undisputed highlight. We went zipping around the lake like a bunch of deranged dragonflies, and the kids absolutely crushed it. They never wanted to get off. The smiles on their faces ultimately made the price worth it, and we all wished we could have stayed out there the entire day. Four stars and highly recommended--especially if budget isn't a concern.

We were told they were not renting jet skis that day. That immediately didn't make sense. Before arriving, I had checked the website, which showed availability. We didn't argue or make a scene we simply accepted what we were told and booked for the following day. The interaction continued to bother me, so later that evening I called anonymously and asked whether they were renting jet skis that day. This time, I was told yes. So why were we told, face-to-face, that they weren't renting jet skis that day? As a Black customer, it's difficult not to question whether race played a role. I can't know what motivated the employee, but being told "no" in person, then receiving the opposite answer over the phone later that same day, while also seeing non-Black customers renting jet skis, left me feeling singled out. Whether this was poor customer service, dishonesty, or something more, it left a lasting impression. I hope no one else has the same experience.
