    White Dragon tournament 2016

USD Campus is nice and kept clean. Today was a Kung fu tournament for the kids and we ran a little late. Parking is atrocious if you come late and plan on walking half a mile to the pavilion. Other than parking, I have nothing bad to say. The pavilion has many bathroom which makes it very convenient. The snack area is priced as your normal arenas with special events. I got chicken tenders with a side of fries and a large soft drink for $13. 2 out 5 for the food.

It's no Pauley Pavilion but nice gym overall.

The USD men's basketball team is on an upswing, so a good product is just an added bonus to the excellent arena.

And even though it's right in the middle of town, it has the feel of an invisible island. Frankly, it's easy to forget it exists. But if you want to see a little no-frills baseball, it's great. This is a fine little ballpark in a natural amphitheater, and they put together a really good baseball program with national clout. Five bucks gets you a seat in the bleachers, ten feet from the backstop. Parking is free (just ask at the kiosk). You get a lovely view of Tecolote Canyon. It's never too crowded. There's no jumbotron, and they don't even have lights (so all games are day games). But they can pitch and hit a little bit. Right now they are ranked 11th in the country despite losing their two All-America pitchers last season. Betcha didn't know that. (Like I said, they have a marketing problem.)

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF STUDENT DEBT…read more Welcome to Graduation season. The time of year when we dress our foremost scholars in medieval religious cloaks and then act surprised when they can't form a straight line. Who thought it was a good idea to put these adults in robes and funny hats?! You know, those square mortarboard hats. At some point back in time did somebody see some bricklayers and say, "That. That's the look we want for our brightest minds?" So, on this day, we honor these devout construction workers. Next is the guest speaker, for the big inspo talk. Given by a guy who went here 30 years ago when it cost fifteen dollars. A rando cereal billionaire named Captain Crunch who'll tell you to "follow your dreams." Meanwhile you're thinking, my dream is to get any job to avoid moving back with (no-longer-closeted) Mom. And the tassel. You're in this sacred ceremony, and the big moment is... some fuzzy string switches sides? The Chancellor of Hogwarts will go, "By the power vested in me, you may now... transform." No one knows why we do this. Four+ years of caffeine-fueled memorizing, tens of thousands of dollars, and it's... flip that string over, you're a whole new person now. The whole time you've got "Pomp and Circumstance" playing on repeat. Its like the music you'd hear as a king gets crowned, not as Seymour from Slusher Hall waddles across the stage in a wrinkled gown. At the end you get to throw the hat. The first time this happened was at the Naval Academy. They got new officer hats, so no longer needed the old ones. It makes sense... new jobs, new hats. For the rest of us, keep these for pics with Grandpa Jack and Gramargarita. Anyway, that's graduation in a nutshell. Just a bunch of weird traditions that we've all agreed is how it should be done. And it's kinda beautiful. Pro tip: Congrats to the USD class of 2026. Ceremonies take place May 21-24 2026. The primary venues are: Jenny Craig Pavilion, Founders Chapel and Shiley Theatre. All graduations follow the above format.

The Catholic university is a blend of historic architecture, lush natural surroundings, and a vibrant student atmosphere! It's definitely a peaceful space, with botanical gardens, tree-lined walkways, and beautiful fountains that encourage focus, tranquility and serenity for every student on campus! The campus almost feels like a postcard, featuring 16th-century Plateresque architecture, a style of the Spanish Renaissance- paying homage to both San Diego's Catholic heritage and the Universidad de Alcalá in Spain. Definitely recommend checking this campus out, it's a great place to walk through and enjoy those stunning panoramic views of Mission Bay!

For parking, I suggest parking by the JC Penny. After checking in on the first floor, the group takes an elevator down the basement where all the game rooms are located. After winding down a long hallway, we reached the Game Show Studio. There are cubbies available to place your belongings but we were able to bring our bags with us inside. We had a party of 11 and we divided into two groups. A group of 14 (to maybe 16) can fit in this room where each person has a buzzer. The experience lasted maybe 45 minutes and it was filled with interactive games. I had a great time because it was only our friend group inside. I'm not sure how it would be if there were other groups in there with you. Shoutout to our wonderful hosts Lyv and Shawn for making my first experience at a Game Show Studio memorable! Overall, this is a fun, wholesome activity to book with your friends and try once. I'm not sure if I'd do this exact game show again but I'm curious to try other events that Red Door offers!

We had 11 people in our group, and were lucky enough that nobody else booked the same slot, so we were able to compete amongst ourselves. There is an option to book for a private party though, if you want to ensure you aren't paired with any randos.  We played a variety of games such as Survey Showdown, Wheel of Wonder, Tic Tac Trivia, Name That Price, and High-Lo. Our hosts were super fun and engaging! Loved the buzzers, the big wheel, and all the lights and music, it almost felt as if we were actually on a game show. Some hiccups with the plinko chips getting stuck or falling out, but not really a huge deal. Winning and losing teams got to pose for pictures with a large and small trophy, respectively.  Overall, this was a fun experience and highly recommend for anyone who has always wanted to experience being on a game show, without the pressure on actually being on one that will be aired on TV! The option to book private parties makes this a great option for team-building excursions as well.

True, they give great giveaways here and there, but the theme nights absolutely suck most of the time. San Diego is an inclusive city with a variety of people, it's time to get with the times! I'm sick and tired of this team's marketing squad only appealing to old, crusty, prejudiced vets. I really wish the team would listen to the requests of the fans on social media. This is not Orange County, we don't have time for "Karens" here, c'mon people! It's bad enough we can't get butts in seats because we always lose. It's time to welcome ALL fans! Sometimes I don't feel welcomed. As for the good, I LOVE this team! It's a ragtag group of players who are full of personality each season. However, I don't think the ownership gives each crew the proper resources to be successful. I see hints of victory each game, where do we go wrong? Coaching? Goaltending? Who knows! It's cool to see the upcoming Ducks take flight here in SD, I always love the games. Therefore, it's time for the rest of the organization's kinks to be worked out if we want more fans to join us. TIPS: The Gulls lager is amazing! I highly recommend it! Also, tickets are cheap for college students during midweek games. Bring your college ID for $15 College Night tickets!

Recently, two of my friends found out that I wanted to learn, so we all went out on a Sunday evening. Sundays, Skateworld closes at 8:30. We arrived at 6:30 which gave us plenty of time. Open skate and skate rental costs $25 per person. It felt a bit steep to me, but I realize that they don't make money on much else so it's really not bad. They offer lockers at a price. There is free filtered water. It was a bit odd when my friends brought me a gift bag with knee pads, that they said no gift bags of any kind were allowed. It seemed odd as I thought children had roller skating birthday parties at places like this. At least they let us take out the knee pads and carry in the empty bag. Anyway, the space wasn't too crowded on Sunday, so it was easy to practice. I also rented one of those little wheeled walkers so I didn't fall all over the place. I was a bit bummed to learn that they didn't offer lessons, outside of their monthly "academy". I would have loved to drop in for a single session. All in all, it was a pretty good time. I would return to skate again.

Review: The Jury Experience - Death by AI…read more I'll be honest: when I first walked into the Peace and Justice Theatre for The Jury Experience: Death by AI, I thought I'd accidentally stepped into a 1980s dinner theater set. The opening had a definite "cheesy retro" vibe--think overly dramatic lighting, a slightly hammy introduction, and a tone that felt more like a Saturday morning mystery special than a high-stakes legal drama. I was braced for a night of campy fun, but what I got was something much more profound. Once the "Moral Dilemma" actually began, the kitsch melted away. The transition from the lighthearted intro to the core of the show--an investigation into a fatal driverless car accident--was seamless and surprisingly gripping. The Experience: Interactive Justice This isn't a show where you just sit in the dark and clap. As a member of the "jury," you are constantly engaged. The interactive elements are the real star here: Real-Time Voting: Using your phone or a remote to vote during key moments feels high-stakes. You can actually see the "hidden angles" of the case reveal themselves based on the room's collective choices. Live Testimony: The evidence is presented with enough nuance that there is no "correct" answer. Was it the programmer's code? The passenger's lack of intervention? Or the machine's inherent logic? The Social Experiment The most fascinating part of the night wasn't the script--it was the people sitting next to me. The show does an incredible job of exposing the friction between law and emotion. In our session, it became clear very quickly that while some of us were trying to follow the "letter of the law," a huge portion of the room was judging based on gut instinct and emotional empathy. Watching the live data shift as people changed their minds (or dug their heels in) was a social experiment in its own right. The Verdict: By the end of the 60 minutes, the room was buzzing. It's the kind of experience that makes you look at your friends and realize you have completely different definitions of "fairness." Final Thoughts Don't let the initial "cheesy" energy fool you. The Jury Experience is a sharp, modern look at the ethics of AI that forces you to confront your own biases. If you enjoy debating ethics over a drink after a show, this is tailor-made for you.
