This store deserves two stars for the products, not the service. The woman who runs this store has a weird attitude. She doesn't have very good people skills and she will rudely tell you about the sales she's having on the way in and out of the store. As someone who has been in retail for most of my life and as a middle aged woman, I would say I would be her ideal customer. But because of her demeanor and tone all I wanted to do was run. Maybe I'll try again. I guess you have to be a regular or a family member or friend in order to get the right kind of treatment here. One lady came up to me with a Christmas stocking and said that I would get a deal if I filled it up. I said I wasn't looking for a lot of stuff, only perhaps one thing as a gift. I looked around some more, enjoying some of the high-quality bags and interesting scarves, etc., making my way all around the circle. When I passed the checkout desk, the woman behind the counter thrust a Christmas stocking at me and repeated the mantra. I didn't know what to say because it such a small shop. I can see in a large store or department store where there are a lot of customers and a lot of staff members, that it's hard to coordinate. But in this case, they are so busy talking to friends and family that they have no idea they have just baraged me twice in this tiny store. Then the original woman who spoke with me with the first Christmas stocking, was straightening some woolen items, perhaps scarves. She apologized, said, sorry if I'm in your way. I sent thanks anyhow. You have a nice store. She did not respond, so I said it again, and added, perhaps you are the owner? She said no, pointing to the woman at the register, she is the owner. I said, well thanks anyway. Maybe they should care about people who are going in to the store for the first time who they don't know, as much as people they do know. Because we have interest, do think the store is quite nice, and would appreciate some minor response or recognition on a human level. read more

I schlepped all the way from Danville to El Cerrito on Friday just to get my "hair did". Since I was a bit early, I was finally able to walk across the street and check out this little gem of a store where my step-mom gets her bath stuff. Walking in, I was impressed at what they were able to do with such a small space. Not only is there bath stuff, there are candles, jewelry, toys and kids shoes, greeting cards, purses and misc. other tchotchke's. During my brief time looking around, I was able to find a birthday present for both a friend and my 5-year-old God-daughter. Is this the BEST gift type store I have been to, no. Jenny K is an easy stroll from my home in El Cerrito and yet its Light Years away from all of the construction in our neighborhood. (We're behind the soon-to-be-completed high school.) One of my early purchases at Jenny K was a wonderful ceramic windchime, a real lifesaver as the old high school was being demolished. Even now, I can hear the gentle tinkle of the bells as they sway in the breeze outside of my studio. Ahhhh! Jen is active in the community, ever serene *and* has wonderful merchandise. I work right by here, but even if I change jobs in the future, it would be worth making the trip to El Cerrito to find great gifts at Jenny K. Unlike a lot of gift-y stores I've been to in Berkeley, Jenny K's selection is always changing, is reasonably priced, and offers perfect gifts for the women in my life that are impossible to shop for (my mom, sister-in-law, friends, etc.). Another reason to shop here: the owner Jen is very environmentally conscious - take it from me; I work for the City's environmental program. I placed an order and immediately cancelled it. Jen said they would refund the $39.99 charge to my card. When I got my credit card statement a month later, the charge was there, but not the credit. I contacted Jen. She claimed it was "the processor's fault". She finally issued the credit, but refused to offer anything for my inconvenience. Very poor attitude. read more

I have been to Jenny K a few times over the years because I sometimes stop by the coffee shop right next door and then I stroll over. There is a really good selection of interesting items and everything is pretty fairly priced. A few years back I stopped in a couple weeks before Christmas and managed to pick up some really nice gifts for a few people on my list, as well a as a very nice ceramic Asian style tea pot for myself that I still use regularly - when guests see it they always comment on what nice tea pot it is. The selection of items in the shop seems to update pretty regularly, and as others have said, Jenn is very active in the community. I was at a fundraiser dance for a friend's son's school a few weekends ago and I saw that there were donated items from Jenny K (and from Well Grounded Tea & Coffee right next door) offered as auction items. I really love their selection and it's pretty low key- but the service needs some work. Just stopped in and the young lady started wrapping presents for the couple ahead of me who, noticing a line of people waiting, said they'd get coffee so she could take her time with that.... They leave, and she Keeps wrapping, oblivious to us being there. She looks up: "oh were you waiting?" Uhhhh- duh ( I hope this is not my local school system at work) Just let me finish this. Keeps wrapping. Woman behind me says "do you think you could check us out and go back to that?" She says well they went for coffee. I say "yes, because they noticed the line and we're really nice." Whenever time allows, on a lazy Saturday I drive up Stockton Avenue, to stop at Jenny K. This year, she saved our Christmas with her varied gifts and toys; a pretty shawl, hair clips for girls, and trains for my small boys. But honestly? My favorite thing about this little store is this: when I'm done buying gifts, I've got cash left for more. That's when I get to take a second, selfish stroll around, as pretty glass things, jewelry, and fancy soaps abound. Even better: now the shop and cafe are combined I snack on Kevin's bocadillo sandwiches, divine! Espresso drinks well-made and tasty, what else can I say but "thanks for making El Cerrito nicer, Jenny K!" This is a small but lovingly curated gift shop, with nice-quality but reasonably priced items. Perfect place to buy a present for a dear friend. Every gift I've bought there - jewelry, scarves, hand cream, soaps - has been adored. Service is good, with free gift wrapping. Convenient hours for those urgent last-minute purchases. On a hunt for a new soap dish last week, I came to Jenny K. It was the first time I'd been in since she moved to the new location a couple of doors west. The store is much larger than the old one, the layout more open. Jenny joked that now she can fit more than one customer in the store at a time. Her merchandise has expanded and much of it is locally, or at least artisan, made. She had several recycled glass soap dishes in different colors from Arcata. One would have been a pretty good fit, so I filed it away in my mind in case I couldn't find a ceramic one. She has an attractive assortment of fabric handbags and several enticing jewelry rolls for travel, not to mention the French bath products I am fond of. I didn't notice all the interesting merchandise she had because I tend to focus narrowly when I'm on a hunt, but what I noticed looked really good. read more

I really like that they have a great selection of items in the store from everything to Kitchen, Jewelry, Great kids toys, DIY gifts, purses, Great "El Cerrito City" souvenir items, I really like it and it's nice because it's near a great coffee shop and in a cute neighborhood. SO that being said.. I felt a little discriminated against when I recently went there. Im not sure why I was treated in such a way.. you should never assume after a customer buys something that just because they have a question (which happened to be on an additional purchase) that what I just bought I want to "return" OMG! How demeaning! Why would that even come out of a person's mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will think twice about going there again.. thats just not how I would treat someone and how I would want my kids to be treated. This is my latest review of Jenny K. Jenny is extremely knowledgeable helpful, especially for us clueless husbands who have no idea what to buy their wifes for that special occasion. I don't know how many times Jenny has "saved" me. My wife shops there, and this gives Jenny great gift ideas for me. As a bonus, Jenny K is attached via an open interior door to Well Grounded (husband and wife team for both places). This is a place for a great cup of dark, rich coffee and delicious sandwich. Small tables outside on the sidewalk, very much like in Europe. The staff is very nice and very helpful. Great place for a snack/lunch and some gift shopping.
