Dion framed a large amount of posters I'd had waiting around and made them look MUCH better than the "cheap prints I bought on Congress" they were (cheap, but beloved!). He spent about half an hour going meticulously through pricing with me, including the premade frames, and was incredibly helpful in explaining matting, framing, and design to a newbie. He never suggested the most expensive route (he actually often suggested a less expensive route, and only showed more expensive ones to show all options), and he never, ever upsold me. Took three posters that were ~close~ in size but about 1/2 of a centimeter varied and matted them all so that the photos were all in identical frames, with an imperceptible mat to accommodate the varied sizing. For a different movie poster I want framed, he made great suggestions and told me where else to go for estimates / frame it myself, so that I could compare my options. Love his logic of "Imagine framing a print like taking a friend to dinner: this sized mat/frame is a friend you kind of like, this is a good friend, and this is your best friend." It oddly did help me decide what I wanted to frame/mat and how. read more

It was my fault. I sent 2 separate orders to my daughter's old address in Chicago for her birthday. Hey, a college student moving around? What are you going to do? Talked with my new best friend April on the phone (August 21). She assured me they would be able to "re-route" the packages in transit. Said there would be an additional charge. Watched my back account and that never happened. The orders were never re-routed. Two weeks later I sent an inquiry to their website email (Friday, September 11) citing order numbers and explain the situation. No response to either. Not even a "sorry buddy, you're out of luck". Don't know who received the order, but not my daughter. She checked her old address 2 weeks ago and no parcels were there. Nothing was delivered to her new address either. Won't ever use them again. See my bank records below. Amount was deducted from my account however yet I've never received the product but more importantly, I haven't received a single word of explanation. Art supplies are available from so many other sites. I will never again use a vendor with this lack of customer service. My $160.00 mistake = their loss. Finding the entrance from the road and parking was complicated. That was the worst part. The outside is painted with really great graffiti art. They have specific art supplies that you can't find at craft stores. I was overwhelmed the first time I went but the employees helped me find the supplies I needed for my classes. Shocked at the reviews touting bad customer service. This has not been my experience. I shop at Jerry's all the time. They have amazing prices on art supplies and a great selection of just about everything (except jewelry supplies). I've taken some painting classes there and it's been a blast. The teachers are knowledgeable, personable, and great teachers. I should have written a 5 star review before now, but here goes...and here's why... I recently purchased a canopy and when trying to put it up, it snapped like a twig. It was really bad timing because I needed it the next day (good thing I tried it first). Anyway, I expected resistance because not only was it broken, I used a groupon for this rather pricey purchase. They took back the canopy EASILY and refunded everything including store credit for the Groupon value...very fair. As I said, I shop here all the time, so it was extra cool to not lose the total value of the Groupon. The people (especially Katherine & Mondo) were very cool and I appreciate the AWESOME customer service! I will continue to be happy with Jerry's and this just adds to it. read more

Jerry's Artarama is where I came to put together my own beginner's acrylic paint set 3 years ago, and I've come back for all my painting needs ever since. There are good-priced beginner/practice canvasses, brush sets, pallettes, and a large assortment of paints to pick from. I was helped in picking out a good spray varnish as well. I also came here to collect some supplies including a poster board to put together a sign for a demonstration downtown. You can go to Jerry's to collect specific supplies or even just to browse around. This place is an artist's paradise. I'm excited to stop by soon to explore watercolor as my next medium. read more

I recently purchased five frames for an art show. East Austin Studio Tour. It's pretty important to me and well, 4 of the 5 frames arrived cracked. This has happened before, but those times were after an in-store purchase. I thought I was buying some insurance, so to speak, by using the online store. They'll be shipped directly to me, I thought. No dice. This happens to me so often I've taken to buying 2-3 more than I need to fill in for the inevitable broken frames. It's impossible to check before I buy because of the way they're packaged. That means that 5 out of the last 9 frames I've purchased from you have been damaged. That percentage is too high. read more

Let me start by saying that, right now, they do require masks due to omicron, so I would recommend having one if planning on coming. However they do have some in store if you forget. But I LOVE THIS STORE. The workers there were SO nice and helpful. I live in Waco and the nicest art store we have is Hobby Lobby. This was such a nice change and was absolutely amazing. They have everything you could ever want from an art store, from markers to paper, to several different brands of gouche paints. I think I just met the Frame Nazi. Was looking to match another framed poster in my home of the same size and the gentleman refused to out the poster in the frame we wanted. "No, I can't do that...it won't look right, that won't work." Seriously, the aesthetics of the frames in my home are not subject to your opinion. "The integrity will not work, it is too thin." Um the frame is just going to hang on a wall, it does not need to be subjected to a stress test. So we rolled up our item and left. Don't bother getting a frame there. read more

Jerry's is amazing. I was trying to frame a painting and went to multiple other shops and didn't even realize how terrible the service was at those other places until I experienced the excellent service at Jerry's. Dion at the painting counter spent at least half an hour with me putting together different combinations of frames and mats to get the perfect combination for my painting, at a reasonable price. Nowhere else has that level of service and care. I returned to get supplies for a painting class and what totally overwhelmed with options. Mondo walked me around the store as I read out my list and picked out the best value and quality options very efficiently. I think this is my first yelp review ever, but they deserve it. I'll tell you a true story about Jerry's Artarama. You know the Johnny Cash picture of him flipping the bird? Well, I won one for like $3 once on eBay. I took it in to them and said, "play with mattes. Play with the framing. Just play with it and see what we come up with." In the meantime, this older woman (say 55 to 60) comes in and unfurls what we all presume to be her grandkids' fingerpaintings. I mean, really, lady. They're just like every other kid's work. Give me a break. And, the lady is super cranky with the Artaramaists. Everything is too expensive. Everything is just not quite the right shade. The look of pain on her artaramist versus mine's look of glee was the dichetomy of man at $10 an hour. Eventually, the lady decides that none of it is right for the fingerpaintings. She does, however, have a few other things she has been thinking about getting framed, and plops out 4 original Dr. Seuss prints. All. Of. Our. Jaws. Dropped. Johnny Cash never looked so uncool. I mean, ever. The lady eventually ended up dropping close to a grand getting them framed. Which I highly recommend if you're sitting on some one of a kind prints. Oh, and my Johnny Cash looks effing great. One more thing, they told me it would be done in two weeks. There was absolutely no hurry. It took two weeks and a day, so they gave me a 10 percent off coupon on my next framing job without me even asking for it. I got a BBQ Festival poster framed for my kitchen with the discount. It, too, looks freaking great. Oops, Jaye just reminded me. The best thing about that Johnny Cash poster is that her dog would sit in the floor of my room and bark at it incessantly. I mean, why would a black dog hate the Man in Black? I'd also point out that it's great for drawing the ire of your parentals on their visits to your house. read more

Customer service in custom framing is horrible. I arrived at Jerry's this Sunday at 5:20pm. I stood in the custom framing line for 20 mins while the male employee helped some patrons. Once the line died down, a female (male looking) employee asked what I was needing. (Where was she when the line was 6 people deep?) Before I could say much, she told me to come back tomorrow because they were about to close. Last I checked, they closed at 6pm on Sundays, not 5:40pm. I don't think the last 20 mins is for the employees to kick people out. "I'm already here, I've been waiting in line, just help me now" is what I wanted to exclaim. Her excuse as to why I should come back tomorrow? So she can "do a good job" I really wish it had not happened this way because the store could offer me a lot but that was my first and last time I will be visiting Jerry's Artarama. read more

In terms of supply, Jerry's Artarama has it all. But the staff has a few customer service problems that do not represent the vision of the original Jerry's Artarama. For example, a staff member today - with long dark hair - stood their making conversation with a friend - and gave me an irritated-I-hate-Jerry's-Artarama-customers kind of look. She was not helpful or friendly at all. The scene made it appear that she spends most of her time talking to her friends who stop by the store. A customer is simply an annoying irritation. Dion is the "Dude of Framing". He managed to get something fairly complicated framed on time for Hubby's birthday. I had certain specifications on how I wanted the items framed and the finished product turned out spectacular. Once (and only once), I got a phone call from Kiddo requesting a "few" items for a design class from Jerry's. After writing down the list of pencils, papers and paints, there were 30+ items. Oh, and he wanted to come pick everything up when I was finished later that night. Who raised this person? All staff members I have worked with are helpful and resourceful and the products they carry serve students, professional artists, budding artists and people who want to be artists. They've got everything- from markers, frames, foam core-which is cheap too btw, to tables, glue, and other quirky things. Wish it was closer to where I live or there was another store, but I can't complain with savings like these, trust me, it's worth the drive. Stop in and check it out. You won't find an art supply store in Austin that's cheaper, and has more of a selection than Jerry's... and if you do, please let me know. I started taking an Oil Painting class up in Round Rock, and went to Hobby Lobby, Michaels, even Joanne Fabrics looking for good paints and brushes etc. The paint I did buy at Michaels wasn't even worth the $ I paid for it. It didn't mix well at all, and looked terrible on my canvas. So I decided to shell out the big bucks and bought paint at Jerry's that is SO MUCH BETTER. I also got some great brushes I'm really happy with there. The only thing I can't seem to get is a stupid turpentine jar with a coil in it. Dag nab it. I want that jar, and they are always out. Anyways, the prices really are cheaper there. I comparison shopped. So if you're into art, even if you're newer at it like me... go to Jerry's. If I was some sort of sleazy club barker, and Jerry's Artarama was a down-and-out dancer, I'd say something like "Let's hear it for Larrrrrge Canvassses...!" Alas (?), I'm not a barker, and there's nothing I found in my many trips to Jerry's that I couldn't bring home to mom. But that doesn't mean that I don't feel like I'm getting away with something here: I'm nearly hysterical with glee at what I find in this place, from the aforementioned canvases (seriously, huge) to brushes, paints, sculpture equipment, drawing supplies, portfolios and much more. And often at super steep discounts. By my estimation the best selection in the city. True, it's a little off the grid for folks who don't spend much time in north central Austin, but very well worth the journey. I'm jazzed to head back, stock up, and create! read more

There's not much I can add to the rest of the glowing Artarama reviews aside from two tips: 1. Shopping for a frame job here is like shopping at Macy's: you should never pay full price because there's always a big sale coming up. You get the best deals by getting on their mailing list -- they send out coupons just about monthly and they're usually useful. I saved over $300 this way on my first visit for framing. I've been on their list for about a year now, and I find the deepest discounts are usually in the off season when no one's graduating from anything, like February. If I'd waited a little longer, I could have saved another $200. 2. If it's not busy in the frame department, ask to see Dion's photo album of the dolls he's made and make him tell you the stories behind them. You'll find he's one of the more interesting characters in this town. read more

I normally buy my wood panels for painting online for super cheap but I wanted to come here to check it out and everything was about 500% more expensive. My first experience with Jerry's was last week, five year old in tow, in what seemed like a mild hurricane here in our relatively tame texas weather. After my mad dash to the store, useless umbrella flapping in one hand, my oblivious-to-the-weather son Loki in the other, I was presently surprised by Jerry's spacious interior. And not just because it was dry and wind free. There was much more variety and bang for my buck then expected. Also, the service was just to my liking. Nobody was hounding me or following me around incessantly, but as soon as I had a question, Bam!, there was a friendly sales associate ready to assist. Did I mention I love ninjas?? And above all, Jerry's was very kid friendly. Always a plus in my crayola covered book. There were lots of kid friendly art supplies and cheap to boot. We'll definitely be back, hopefully on a sunnier day. read more

I debated between 1 Star or 2. Probably should have chosen 1, but it seemed too harsh. Let me start by letting you know that I am not a fine artist, which may have been the root of my problem. I went to purchase a picture frame for artwork that my daughter created. I found what I needed, because what's hard about that. However, when I asked for assistance in making a purchase for my daughter, I got nothing. I was told that there were no "kits" available because they had all been sold over the holiday. OK, I get that. So, I asked if they could recommend individual products that an 11 year old artist might be interested in and I got NOTHING! They saw that I was holding her artwork in my hands, how hard would it have been to take a look at her work and the materials she used and made some suggestions based on what they saw? Yes, luckily, I did come to do that on my own, but if they had been at all interested in customer service and making a sale, they could have been more helpful! I felt that I was dismissed and not taken seriously. Is my dollar not as important as one of a talented artist? Jerry's is clearly not a place for a novice...there is NO support there. You'd better know what you need if you're going to walk into that store! read more
