I've been a loyal customer of TOPS since the early 2000s and have only bought used items. On Tuesday I bought a new chair, and brought it home to realize it doesn't fit with my desk because of the arm layout. I called to find out about exchanging it, and learned that there's a 25% charge to exchange a new item. This means that for a $250 dollar chair, I'll be paying $60 to exchange it and buy a more expensive chair. This really does not sit right with me. I think a policy unusual like that it needs to be verbally stated to the customer prior to sale. This policy pretty much sours my good feelings about TOPS; to return a new item with tags on two days after purchase, for an exchange, should not cost 25%. Management should consider the impact of this policy on customer feelings. read more

Had a great experience years ago at the 5th street location when I bought several pieces of used office furniture at great prices. Today they are in a beautiful, spacious location, though I was super disappointed in the prices. $95 minimum for a beat-up used 2-drawer filing cabinet and $300 for a new one. Issue is with deceptive sales practices. Sold me a chair last weekend. Said it was a fully workable good chair. By the second day I realized it was broken. It keeps ratcheting down. I keep having to lift up the seat. Apparently it was broken when I bought it. Of course, No refunds, all sales final. Selling broken goods, passing them off as unbroken and then not offering a refund. Great business model. Should have gone to Best Buy, Office Depot, HD or Lowe's for an office chair. I learned about TOPS when I returned to Austin in 2013. It was located down on Fifth Street back then, but I recently discovered it had moved north on IH 35. I am always amazed at what one can find here - used office furniture including filing cabinets that are in quite good shape. Some are unaware that they also carry the odd office supply like reams of paper and desk equipment. Now, it helps to have friends with pickup trucks, as it will cost you extra to have your vintage office furniture treasures moved to your location by TOPS. But given the good prices at TOPS, paying them a little extra is not such a bad thing. read more

Don't buy new office furniture. Don't even buy new office supplies. I mean, really, who needs a stapler right out of the package? Everything at TOPS is used, but if it's going to be used in a boring office, who cares? You can get everything at TOPS: desks, chairs, cabinets, shelves, computer stuff, and just about any office supply you can imagine ranging from pens, to binders, to "in" and "out" boxes, to notepads. What I saw in there looked practically brand new - executive chairs probably used for a year by some big-wig university Dean who decided he wanted burgundy leather instead of navy blue. So the next time you need a new desk at work, and your boss tells you you need to wait 'til the next fiscal year because it's not in the budget, maybe you can convince him to get you a nice, used cheap one from TOPS. read more

Looking for something for the office? The classroom? Need items for an event? Look no further, my friends! TOPS has what you need and WOW is there a price difference! We were working on a project in the office recently and needed some of the old school overhead projector paper to run through the copier. We needed 4 sheets. FOUR SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETS. Turns out you have to buy them in either 50 or 100. Staples was around $50 for the 100 sheet and $70 for the 50. Yes, you read that right. I, too, called bullshit on that one. I just didn't feel good about paying that kind of money for something we only needed 4 sheets of. I decided to research and make some calls. So, turns out, that same box of 100 was $10 at TOPS. YEAH BABY! That's what I'm talking about. Drove over and walked in... WOW do they have some great stuff at excellent prices! The fellas were super friendly and very helpful. I've shopped at tops since mike opened his first location in a giant "airplane hanger" on east 5th street. I've watched them through every move and every transformation going back more years than I'm willing to admit. the place was amazing back then, and it's still easily the best resource for used office furniture in central texas. these guys get it all, from paper clips and tape to cubicles and seating. you can find everything you need to outfit an office, and lots of other things that would even be suitable for a retail store or a restaurant. I've even gotten things to furnish my home from here! there's really no telling what you might find at tops at any given time, so i try to make it a habit to stop in early and often. in fact, it feels a lot like going on a treasure hunt. the prices can't be beat and the best stuff goes fast, but everyone there is ready and willing to help you find what you need or to leave you alone and let you browse. there's never any pressure to buy, but they're always right there when you need them (which is exactly the kind of place i feel comfortable frequenting). they're also willing to haggle a little, which always helps me keep a smile on my face ! read more

Felt compelled to write a review after my experience today at TOPS, which was AWESOME! I had emailed Valdemar to see if they had any Herman Miller Aeron chairs in the A size, and Valdemar responded quickly and even put one on hold for me! Then, when I arrived, Diane (I think her name was Diane!) helped us check out. She even gave us a discount which was incredibly kind. Overall a great experience. So much heavily discounted stuff in good condition--I will definitly be back. The ONLY con I can see is that everything is dusty and a little dirty--they did wipe down everything we bought--but when I got home I noticed some grime--but this is expected given everything is in a big warehouse. I heard about this place through my job, I always thought it sounded interesting but I never had a reason to go. Until I realized I was in the middle of "Adult Land" with out a filing cabinet. The small little plastic crap thing I had I never used because I had to get a butter knife to get the thing open was not helping me get the paper monster off my desk. SO.... being the cheap bast- I mean frugally smart person I am decided to stop by here while in Austin to see what I could get. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door, and asked what I needed. I told the extremely bright and perky guy I needed a small filing cabinet. Then came the comment that made my bargain hunters eyes gleam "Do you want it pretty or cheap?" CHEAP! Apparently the stuff out sitting out side is the cheap stuff (not that everything else in there wasn't too, I'm getting there). You ready for this TEN BUCKS for a 2 drawer filing cabinet that really isn't that ugly., and works just fine minus a lock. I had to wander, I just had to I mean really I needed filing cabinet things right?! So I got the hanging files, the file folders, 2 staple pullers, and a paper clip holder, and the best thing of all a ceramic envelope licker thing. Grand total? $20! I bought the chair I'm sitting in, binders, folders, a 3 hole-punch and a myriad of other items at a fraction of the price at Office Max or Staples. I really enjoy this place! Where else can you get geodes and fossil ammonites along with a vintage oak Teacher's chair and a really cheap file cabinet? Really? I think the answer is no where else in the world. Hub and I first found this place when he was living in Austin for a while and going to UT. We wanted to find a rock shop and this was the closest to his digs. After fumbling around a while to find the place (we had no GPS at the time) we finally found it and parked. At first I was wondering "where is the rock shop?" Then I saw the massive garnets in matrix sample at the entrance and knew I was in the right place. The rock shop is fun. It is cram packed with neat specimen pieces, fun little kid friendly rocks, nice collector's items, new age stone magick pieces, everything. You can spend hours pouring through the collection. There are also a few racks with stone beads and some finished jewelry too. I got a pair of my favorite ear rings here. After we finished looking at rocks and stones and jewelry and such, we went to the used office furniture. Hub needed a couple of things to round out his little apartment. Guess what, we found what he needed here at a really good price. One comfy office chair, check. One file cabinet, check. We even got a good lamp. The price was so much less than what we would have paid at a big box office store and honestly, the stuff was better quality. Need some rocks? Need some office furniture? Need to kill some time? A good spot indeed for everything from cubicle walls to minifridges to desks and most every other office product out there. The prices are reasonable and the selection is beyond plentiful. Most importantly, the staff is very helpful and doesn't mind digging through dozens of filing cabinets to find just the right one. Have bought a bunch of stuff from TOPS over the past many years. Most recently I needed two freestanding privacy panels for our home office, to help deaden the sound between my wife and I when we're both on the phone. Not full cubes, just the cube-like panels that stand alone between two desks. I walked in and several employees were hanging out in the office, being unproductive, gossiping, it sounded like, about someone's messed up relationship. I asked "do you guys have any freestanding panels?" The gal said "no", which surprised me. I said, "You don't? That surprises me. I would'a figured you did". She said, "no, we don't have any". Then Nick chimed in, "Yes we do. Come on I'll show you". He took me straight to them, he knew exactly where they were, found the feet and the screws needed, and I bought two of them. Loaded them up in my truck and I was done and gone in less than 12 minutes total. So the 5 stars are for Nick, and the fact that TOPS actually did have what I wanted, as they usually do, even if the office gal was clueless about the inventory on hand. I paid about 1/3 what they would've cost new. TOPS is a great place to buy your office furniture. Always start there instead of Office Depot or Office Max. Much funner to wander around in a real warehouse than a retail store. Lots of good stuff there, though I didn't have extra time to wander and browse during this particular visit. read more

This place is amazing! They have used office furniture for really great prices. Not only do they have the usual suspects, but they also have a few pieces from office lobbies: couches, coffee tables, and chairs. It's all a really great price and rock bottom prices for things that are a little more than used. I got a really cute little side table with a gash in the leg (that we put against the wall) for only $5! They also have a large room full of used staplers, hole punches, pens, paper, folders, etc. Also sell a few new pieces if that's your thing. You can also bring in old stuff to sell or trade. The service is excellent. They show you what they have, explain all the bells and whistles and then leave you alone to decide without a salesperson breathing down your neck. Helpful, and no pressure! This is a great place to find quality office furniture at good prices. There's lots of cool old filing cabinets and office supplies. I love walking around the warehouse and digging through sometimes plain, sometimes vintage, sometimes fancy office furniture of all types. Everyone I've interacted with at the 5th Street location is great. From sales to delivery. They recently worked with me on a tricky delivery situation. I enjoyed my initial experience in shopping in their store location in Austin. Lots of options and inventory available. Credit card machine wouldn't work for my debit card so had to use my credit card, but this is not the reason for the rating. I found I needed to return the small file box I bought because it didn't fit properly into my home office space. Returning this item was made more difficult than it should have been. Purchased June 29th and returned July 13th. No indication of a limited return policy, but the guy tried to tell me they really only take returns within 1-2 days of purchase. I eventually got my item returned but had to be charged the 3% credit card fee. Lame but still got to return. Be aware that it may be hard to return something even if it's only been a few weeks. read more

This is a great place to find deals, no steals, on office supplies and office furniture. Everyone is nice, helpful and honest; this place has integrity and variety. Prismacolor colored pencils, 5 for a dollar; bond copy paper $3; they still have a few of the cast-offs from Miller Blue Print when they checked out of their downtown location. Great tables for $40. An enormous warehouse literally filled from ground to ceiling (desks and tables are stacked 4 and 5 high) with recycled office furniture and supplies that you can cherrypick for next to nothing. I picked up a huge old-fashioned solid wood office desk for about 50 bucks and stuck it in the corner of the living room of our apartment to use as my own personal home office. Granted, it wasn't very aesthetic and my girlfriend grumbled, but they delivered it for free. read more

I don't go to Tops regularly because I don't need many office supplies. But when I do need something, especially something pricey, I always call on Tops. In fact, as I write this review, I am sitting in my Herman Miller chair that I purchased at Tops years ago for a fraction of the retail price. The selection can be hit-or-miss, but it's worth checking out considering the price breaks that can be had. The last time I went one staff member (Chuck?) went out of his way to accommodate me. TOPS has a good variety of items. Although, their customer service was lacking in my experience. Got told wrong information about items and then returned to get the items and had an even worse experience. The two men working were nice until the card machine stopped working. They called over someone else from the other building and he was extremely rude and then raised his voice trying to tell us it was our cards that weren't working when it was the machine. Definitely not my first visit to Tops, but was floored by the help I received...Went in yesterday, early morning, about 8:30 or 9a, and did not expect the great customer service I received so early in the morning, since most other office retailers lack in this area. I was pricing desks and browsing misc. items for my office. I was assisted by a gentleman named Mike who was very helpful. He was knowledgeable about the products and made great suggestions based on my telling him about the set up of the office. Even though the large space is packed full of bargains, and may not appear easy to maneuver through, there are always friendly staff on hand to help out.
