The food and service was exceptional! We stopped for breakfast and were surprised by the beautiful artwork along the downtown area. The dinner was quaint with lots of servers constantly refilling your drinks - very attentive! We ordered the breakfast sopapilla which was so so so good! Such a great hole in the wall and a Gallup staple! Great food, small, cozy atmosphere and always happening. That there may lie a reason for the two stars. Always busy and never enough space, expect to stand outside, or on the city sidewalk for a good amount of time while patrons take their time dining on the good food stop by if you are willing to wait and wait and wait. A great little cafe with large portions and yummy food. We went during off hours and were able to be seated right away as a party of 2, but the cafe was still very busy. I think it always is! We had two specials others have noted: the carnitas stuffed sopaipilla and the chili rellanos. The big, fluffy sopaipilla with honey for dessert reminds me of my childhood. Everything was delicious! Some of the menu photos on Yelp showed only the American food side of the menu, which was misleading. There is a full "New Mexican" menu with lots of enchiladas, tamales, etc to choose from. Thank goodness for Yelp -- that's how we found Jerry's Cafe, where everyone who knows good food eats in Gallup! It was packed (it's tiny -- a real diner-style setup), but we did not have to wait long. I ordered cheese enchiladas. The waitress asked if I wanted onions, I said yes, but there were no onions -- the only reason I did not award Jerry's 5 stars. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas with an egg on top. He was very pleased. We were not offered chips and salsa --- I'm not sure if that does not come with dinner, or what. I saw others received said chips and salsa prior to meals. Honestly, our table was so small, that I'm not sure it would have fit. I would Jerry's again and wish I had some of their deliciousness right now. Oh, and I forgot that they give you a hot pillowy sopaipilla with honey! It had been a long time since I had one of those. Yum. It was worth having sticky hands! read more

This local restaurant was just what I needed. It is located in downtown Gallup, a cute and quiet area after dark. The inside of the cafe was diner-esque and full of happy folks staying warm from the cold outside. I ordered the Jerry's Stuffed Sopaipilla which checked off my two musts: chiles and sopaipillas. When in New Mexico! The portion was HUGE and delicious. Now, I'm not someone who can eat a whole plate of food ever...but this was an exception. It was comfort food and warm. Jerry's is a great local cafe to try if you'd like to sample some New Mexican cuisine served up with friendly service. Every time we've stopped here there's a wait for a table so we know it's a popular spot. Jerry's soup is vegetable soup with spanish rice and chicken broth. I never, ever order restaurant soup, but when I sampled my husband's and saw how satisfying and delicious it was I had to have my own. The chicken taquitos and beans were somewhat unremarkable but I was surprised how much I enjoyed the rice. Those sopaipillas though! Words can't describe how light and fluffy these are, and how you think you could eat five or ten of them. (Note: two is probably your limit. They're huge.) As for the chile, it comes on most everything and yes, it is quite spicy. If you are a spice wimp like me be sure to ask for the sauce on the side or you'll feel the burn! We like stopping at Jerry's to get off I-40 while traveling through and to enjoy more of what the locals eat. read more

It is the kind of diner that locals eat at, full of friends and family stopping in to talk, chat and get a great meal. The bread/sopaphilla (might've misspelled that) was the best we've ever had, everywhere else is too dry and tasteless while this had flavor and excellent texture. We came here for dinner last night and all would have been well but we ordered guacamole and chips to start, and the guac was beyond disgusting. It was from a supermarket tub (you could easily tell) that had gone rancid. It completely tainted our experience even though our main dishes were mostly fine. Our daughter got supermarket chicken nuggets and fries and one of us had the stuffed sopapilla while the other ordered a "bowl and chile" (green chile, ofc). The stuffed sopapilla had the gross guac in it so one of us couldn't eat much of it, but the bowl was wonderful: just beans and green chile, served warm and spicy, no complaints. The accompanying plain sopapilla was also pretty good--a bit too dense, but hot and crispy. Service was New Mexican-paced but friendly enough, though we were chagrined to find out that they don't serve booze (it had been a long day on the road and we needed a drink!). The place is cozy and welcoming and maybe if we had caught it on a different day, we might feel differently about our experience, but 2.5 stars rounding up for that particular evening. read more
