I came here on a Saturday night for dinner; Jerusalem Cafe is nestled on a busy street in downtown Oak Park where you can find street parking (and a super cheap parking garage nearby which is where we parked). Inside is a very humble, down-to-earth vibe with seating dispersed throughout the restaurant. There were lotsss of takeout orders and people coming & going. We opted to dine-in with our meals. The employee who took our order was very friendly and helpful! She answered all our questions. We got the chicken shawarma and chicken tender entrees, which came with rice, veggies, pita, and a small thing of hummus. If you want sauces it's 65 cents each (I got the white garlic sauce and their spicy green sauce). The meal was good; it wasn't anything out of this world but it was definitely yummy nonetheless. I wish the sauces came with the entrees. My sister got the lentil soup too; it wasn't the greatest. I think their fattoush salad would be a better addition to the entrees instead of the veggies since it's a bit more authentic that way. This was the first mediterranean place I've been to that served veggies instead of some sort of Arabic or fattoush salad on the side with their entrees - it was still good, I'm just used to having salad instead and think it fits a bit better! Jerusalem Cafe has been our go to place for Mediterranean food for a while with good quality and price. However a few weeks ago we had such a poor experience that we may not be back. Our take out order included a gyro sandwich, hold the onions. We received a gyro sandwich without the pita and with onions. We called in about it and the woman on the phone offered to provide a pita if we come by to pick it up and that we should pick the onions out ourselves. We asked for a new sandwich. After some back and forth, she reluctantly agreed. I understand that mistakes occasionally occur, however how those mistakes are handled is everything. She wanted to do the minimum, no apology. There is limited parking in front of the restaurant, so coming back a second time to do a pick up is a chore. I expect better. read more

I always eat too much but you can take a little bit with you it's OK the hummus is wonderful all the meats are super tasty and delicious they can make you fresh juice if I lived close by I would eat here all the time. The last two times I ordered delivery my meal wasn't good. First time the salmon in the salmon entree was tiny. The box was just full of rice. The second time, the fried veggie wrap was mostly chopped cucumber and tomato with a small amount of what seemed like old fries at the bottom. The staff was a little flustered because other people hadn't come in when they opened at 11, but they were kind and courteous getting us our meal as quickly as they could. I enjoy the food at Jerusalem Cafe and come to this restaurant once a week when I am going to the library. The food is always consistent and the owner and the young lady knows what I like when I order from her. I usually get the same thing which is chicken pita and I usually do not get the bread. The chicken is always tender and I like that they have the lettuce, tomato, onion, and sauces on the side. They have the best flavored iced tea too. I was at the restaurant last week. The owner was helping some immigrants with a meal for their family which included two young children. He did this out of the goodness of his heart and didn't ask or expect payment. This family was hungry and they were appreciative. This place is not fancy, but comfortable. I have been coming here for at least five years and look forward to my food and service when I come every week. The owner and his staff do their best to provide good service. I have witnessed some customers who are rude and want things for free or are nasty. The owner does his best but cannot always give people things if they don't pay for it. Many places are increasing their prices and decreasing their portions due to the economy. They have no choice if they want to continue running their business. read more

Their focus seems to be on phone orders. The cashier is the same person processing orders for in restaurant visits as well as taking orders on the phone. I bought a sandwich here as I'd heard great things. When I saw baklava with pistachios on top I was so excited, as they normally have walnuts. I asked the woman behind the counter, just to make sure since I'm allergic to walnuts. She assured me they had only pistachios. Well that wasn't true and I had a horrible evening itching and feeling like someone was stabbing my eyes with needles. I returned a few nights later to discuss with the manager. He kept repeating that he knew they had walnuts. I tried to explain it was his job to make sure that all of his staff knew because people have allergies to many nuts. All he did was keep insisting he knew they had walnuts. I was so exhausted with his unwillingness to acknowledge my issue and apologize that I got angry and ask for a refund. He told the woman behind the counter, the same one who sold me the baklava, and who was very apologetic, I must say, to give me two dollars back. I had paid almost 4 he actually charged me for the half that I ate, that almost killed me. I will never return to this place, and if you had allergies, you wouldn't either because he doesn't seem to care if he kills you or not. As for the food, I have to say the meat was delicious, but the sandwich itself had no flavor and the lettuce was so wilted, I thought it was cooked cabbage. Top notch! I got the gyro wrap meal. The gyro was tasty, ample, and not dry. I ended up giving my daughter about a third of the meat happily. She loved it and I liked the meat to veggie ratio better. The only miss was the lack of sauce. I added tzatziki sauce but I would've loved a spicy sauce as well. Next time I will order the hot sauce. I also didn't need the fries. They were salted and cooked fine but my stomach only has so much room and wrap was really good! My wife got the combination feast and all the meats were great but the beef shish kabob was outstanding. Next time she'll just get the beef. I also really enjoyed her veggies. My third and last visit to this place after the manger went off on me because I didn't tell him I wanted rice with my gyro sandwich. I said sorry I'm use to the young lady ask would I like rice or fries. The mgr. stated he doesn't have to as fries are standard but that's not what the sign above the counter states nor the menu. So I did inform him he would not have to worry because this was the last time I would be visiting this establishment. Also, beware, on my second visit my gyro lamb was very dry as if it had been out a while. I guess I will be trying Cava that's soon to open at Harlem and Lake. Also the manger's attitude towards women in my opinion is not positive from my third and last visit and how I've noticed he treats the young lady that works there. read more
