Kangaroo fillet with vegetable gratin, wilted spinach, eggplant purée and a beef-wine au jus.
    Stasj T.

I've had this restaurant on my "Need to Grab Someone to Eat Here" list for a while, as I keep passing it anytime I head over to Wynyard Quarter. My friend and I had just finished up a week of adventure and wanted to eat a proper dinner before her flight in the morning. So we stopped here. Glancing through the menu, my eyes immediately zoned in on the kangaroo fillet. Mainly because I have a thing for exotic foods (I had a kangaroo burger in London), but also because it came with vegetables gratin, wilted spinach, and an eggplant puree finished in a beef-wine au jus. Close your mouth before a fly goes in. My friend ordered the walnut & mascarpone crusted lamb rump with feta & herb potato crush, aubergine caviar, and glazed bulbs in a merlot jus. What. We should've ordered a starter as our dishes did take some time to come out, but we drank water and recounted all the things we accomplished in the past week. Once our dishes arrived, we admired the presentation then proceeded to delve in. My friend didn't know what to do with the walnuts, as they were off to the side rather than apart of either the lamb rump or the potato crush, but liked how the feta played off the lamb. I was glad that the waitress suggested to get my kangaroo medium, as if it were any more done, it would have been too tough. The eggplant puree and beef jus was phenomenal; I spend most of my time wiping up the au jus with pieces of kangaroo and enjoying each bite. Actually, I spent most of my time trying to cut the 'roo fillet as this place did not have proper steak knives. More serration was needed on those blades. If I were to grab another mate and come back, I would order a starter and also check out either the ostrich or venison dish. No complaints here!

The good, no wait and inexpensive, the bad nothing but food was mediocre at best. We were the only people in the restaurant

Food is amazing with amazing views of the water. Wonderful vibe and great service. It's a hidden gem of Princes Warf.

It's been 60+ years for Tony's. The food is average but dependable. Steaks and seafood are prepared competently, portions are generous, and everything tastes exactly how you expect. Nothing stands out, it's familiar comfort more than destination dining. I wish they used fresh calamari instead of the rings. The friendly, old-school service does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The staff are warm and attentive, which helps elevate what would otherwise be a very middle-of-the-road meal. I watched them work together like a Olympic team. GREAT! A cultural icon with nostalgia on its side, worth a visit if you like classic American/Australian -style steakhouses, but not a place you go for wow factor. You will get good fires and a steak.

But the food is underwhelming and our server got our orders incorrect, despite repeating it back to us. She also brought us a drink that we did not order and instead of simply taking it back, she tried to push it onto us claiming that we indeed ordered it. Odd experience. For table appetizers we tried the fried calamari and camembert. It was disappointing to see the camembert was very small and served with basic crackers, not complimentary to the cheese at all. The calamari was good but a little oily. Each person in our party of 4 ordered different steaks, the steak is why you come to Tony's - all were cooked to our preference. I requested double veggies with my filet, since 2 sides come with each entree. But my veggies were the exact size of everyone else's at my table. When I questioned it, I was told that this is what I would get. Hmmm, okay. While I see the appeal for the pricing and the steak, Tony's would not be my first choice for a steakhouse in this area.

The first time I went was for a friend's surprise dinner party. The owner let us decorate with balloons and the staff came out with a special birthday song & ice cream sundae with a candle to blow out. I just fell in love with the African decor & food! So much so, I insisted we have our big family dinner here. At the family dinner, I drank a Creme Soda with the chicken schnitzel and finished off with an amarula dom pedro. It all tasted like home and I almost felt like I was back in Botswana or SA! The quality was just the same as before and the service was great. If I lived close by, I would go regularly :)

They were not Tiger prawns ,but looked like the cooked small prawns you can buy in the Supermarket for approx $17 a bag. There were only 7 of these prawns in a garlic and blue vein sauce. accompanied by 2 slices of brown bread. Cost $24! What a rip off. Also ordered Crispy Chicken in a garlic dip. There were about 3 chicken wings in pieces and 5 of the smallest Chicken legs I've seen served in a meal. They were about a third of a normal size leg you would expect. The total cost was $ 86 odd. I can get 8 servings of Chinese for $68. A total disaster.

I got the Aged Specialty Sirloin $44. It was cooked to my liking on the inside but medium/medium rare but no crust on the outside. Seasoned fare, nothing special. I couldn't believe the gristle wasn't trimmed before cooking. Maybe so the size and weight would look bigger. I have had much better at Chili's. I haven't had a good steak since I moved to Australia from the US, and others have said the same. Their cuts seem to be full of gristle, even all the Spencer Steaks (Ribeyes). I expected on New York, but not on ribeyes or sirloins. I told them my review and they were very apologetic. They called the gristle fat, I like fat, you can eat fat. The offered a Ribeye The Ribeye came medium rare. I instantly could smell teriyaki. It was tender and flavorful no gristle. I do wish it did not have the flavor teriyaki though. I typically shy away from restaurants that are in the hotel because they tend to be pricey. We felt, for Americans, that this was decently priced and that each time we ate here, we got a different meal FOOD WE TRIED: - Chicken and vegetable dumplings - Prawn and chive Gyoza - Arancini - 55 day aged beef brisket sliders - Seafood Risotto - Spaghetti with mussels, snapper and prawns The sliders, gyoza and spaghetti with seafood was VERY good. I wouldn't order the dumplings again, but I always forget that chicken dumplings just aren't the same as pork and/or shrimp. The Arancini was a bit disappointing in flavor, maybe just a touch more salt would have been helpful and same thing with the flavor of the Risotto. The seafood was cooked perfectly, but the sauce on it just wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked, for a risotto. Service was always great with the staff always helpful with recommendations. We were very happy to have access to this restaurant during our stay the Four Points
