The good * Sunset is deeply knowledgeable about yard projects and pools, and their pricing was reasonable. * Although we already had paid-for design work from another agency, Steve tweaked and rendered updates to the yard at no charge. They also gave us special consideration on a putting green at nearly no cost. * José has a deep knowledge of plants and landscape. We like our backyard a lot--the plants have filled in beautifully and the overall look is very lush. * Most things have held up with little wear after a year, aside from a few broken sand-set pavers. * The whole yard photographs really well. * I've referred them to two friends- one finished his project in July. The bad * Our backyard doesn't appear to have been graded correctly before the rear fence went in. It's not very noticeable, but it was mentioned to me by the job-site manager's son. There's no drainage issues, just unusual info. * The job-site manager--whom we liked--was caught taking papayas from our neighbor (he even used a ladder). We were told he was removed from the project, but he later returned intermittently, so we mostly operated with a sometimes-manager. * We paid for a lemon tree, but that season's trees were diseased--we still don't have our lemon tree. * The pool looks great except for three issues: one jet was cut oddly and protrudes; a light isn't centered; and some grout added later is a noticeably brighter white than the rest. * the mini fridge was installed and the space for the door is not large enough. The door rubbing has damaged the stucco on the bar/grill area. The unusual * There were instances of needless, small lies. Because we have cameras, it was easy to cross-check whether someone had actually come by. At times I was told a visit or fix happened when it hadn't. I was even told a paver was broken and then fixed, but neither was true. My wife had similar conversations. * When I referred a friend (a large project), I was told I'd receive a $1,000 referral payment upon signing--very generous and not expected. When I checked in, it became payable at project completion. I just received it, and it was half--$500. I was also told the check had been made earlier, but it was dated the day it was delivered. I don't regret using Sunset--they offer strong expertise and fair pricing. I'd simply like the bar door fixed, the sand-set pavers replaced and our lemon tree delivered. --Josh

You would be remiss to not use this company for a pool build Especially in the OC area. I had at least five other quotations, some embarrassing for them, but I would say that this has been the smoothest construction project I've ever had. What I will add now that I've given you my experience as I've also been in the construction industry, my entire life. My father was in the business. My grandfather was in the business. I went to the military came out and I'm still in the business. If you want an honest unsponsored, no frills endorsement this is it I have no problem answering any questions that someone might have off-line during this process. Okay, so this is not your typical review because Wes, at Hansen Pools did not build my pool…read more Another builder did (and he was good) but wasn't available. My pool and I had a disagreement. I wanted it to pump water and it didn't. Half empty spa every morning, pump shutting down and refusing to restart. Just plain moody pool attitude nonsense. In an attempt to resolve an issue before leaving for two weeks I went to Yelp and tried to find a Pentair certified pool tech. Somehow I randomly chose Hansen Pool (obviously overlooking the "construction" part of their name - duh.) Good thing I did, however. Wes answered and, like a legit dude, walked through the situation with me. Through an exchange of photos and trial and error diagnosis we revealed the problem and got my pool's bad attitude sorted and back to pumping water. The whole process was actually kind of fun because I learned a lot more about my system than I knew before, got to (kinda) meet a really friendly guy, and come to realize I have no future in the pool industry. He declined an offer for payment. He declined an offer for a token of gratitude. He declined an offer to drive to TJ for tacos and beers. Why is this relevant since this minor league stuff has nothing to do with this guy building my pool? I'll tell you why. It says A LOT about the work ethic, values, and character at the other end of the phone when you call them. The pool industry is HUGE in SoCal. All the websites are flashy and beautiful and fill us with fantastic visions of our backyard paradise. But flashy websites are a dime a dozen and tell you little about the truth. I have more than one friend who was burned by an unscrupulous pool builder. I, myself, ended my interaction with a pool builder after having issues (and losing a down payment) before finding another one to complete my project. This Yelp review is about the character shown. Wes had absolutely nothing to gain from our interaction yet he helped me out and showed true character and you won't see that on a website. Truly, if you're looking for a pool builder give them a call. Ask for Wes. He is a straight up dude and has the kind of character that isn't as common as it once was. P.S.: I didn't really offer to go get tacos in TJ. I made that up. Wanted to clear that up because who would like a guy who wasn't down for tacos?
