As you pull into the driveway you are greeted by a stylised metallic cow sculpture, the mascot of the cheese factory. My favourite thing to do is sample all their lovely cheeses before I decide which ones are coming home with me. My favourites include the spiced gouda (with caraway seeds in it), the cheese curd (deliciously salty and reminds me of nursery rhymes and the Canadian dish of poutine) and the haloumi, YUM! There is some seating inside and out for devonshire teas and enjoying the serenity. A milkshake and slice of cheesecake deal seems to provide an excellent fix for dairy junkies at just $7. The double cream used on scomes is so thick, it's like trying to spread butter out of the fridge, but my goodness it is tasty and the afore mentioned milkshakes are great with malt and come served in those great retro silver milkshake cups - great novelty! Infact the presentation of the food is deli like in a small window. They also sell unique food at high prices. Don't get me wrong nice stuff like vegan chocolate just very pricey. We ordered the fish cakes and soup (minestrone) which came with salad and garlic bread. Both meals were very nice (I am used to a big bowl of soup for 9.90) and my soup was quite small and sadly was mainly pasta and not much veg. But it was very tasty as was the garlic bread. The tuna cake was again a bit expensive for what it was but again very nice. The staff are lovely if a bit 'older' I definitely felt I was in an old persons town. The Doc had the duck pie, great flavours but unfortunately nuked back to life in the microwave so pastry a bit soggy. Needed a little good quality chutney or something on the side too. All the meals are served in cute little cardboard boxes and they do a good coffee too. Come down in January when all the local holiday houses are occupied and this place is packed from morning to close. A switched on older couple sitting next to us also pointed out the carboard cartons, wondering if they were recycled. I then asked the waitress if the packaging that our meal was served on would be recycled or go in the rubbish and she went to ask another staff person. She reported back that it would go in the rubbish as all meals are served ready-to-go and the cardboard cartons for dine-in meals saves on dishwasher water. I am unconvined by this logic and unimpressed by eco-marketing that embraces some aspects of sustainability to suit their buisness and disregards other elements such as recycling and contributing to landfill. This cafe does good business and would be generating significant amounts of waste from eco-minded customers who, based on the cafe's promotional information, believe they are supporting an environmentally sustainable business. It would not be difficult to recycle the cardboard or explore other options such as bamboo plates that are biodegradeable, employing a good old fashioned dishwasher, or using economy cycles on an industrial dishwasher and then recycling the greywater into their back garden cafe area where it could nourish herbs and vegies. It was awkward to eat my salad out of the carboard box inside a cardboard carton and my spanakopita was microwaved which made it soggy and not as fresh tasting as I had anticipated. The cushions on the outside chairs were very dirty and needed a wash too ... they don't need to be thrown into the garbage along with the cardboard plates! It is fantastic to see cafes like the Jetty Food Store supporting local growers , practising fair trade, selling organic produce etcetera, but dig a little deeper and the eco-bubble bursts.
