There are part of the beach that has soft sand, so a 4wheel drive would nice but not necessary. Bring a shovel incase you get stuck. Also, no bathroom by the beach and the closest one I saw was by the visitor center. There is an RV park next to the visitor center if you plan stay longer and comfortable. It's a 3.5 hr drive from Killeen which is way closer than San Padre and get the same experience. Will definitely take the kiddos for camping when the weather cools off and hurricane season is over.

Patti, the owner, personally rushed to clean up one of the lovely cabins for me, which wouldn't normally have been available as guests had just checked out after the Fourth of July weekend. I wanted to come here for a little writing retreat because of the chill vibe I'd heard about--small fishing town, beautiful beach and nature, friendly people, not super touristy. (As much as my family loves Port Aransas the vibe in the summer is anything but chill.) The neighborhood where the cabins are is the kind of place where everyone waves as you're passing each other on the road. There are some beautiful cows across the street that came RUNNING to greet my dog and me, miniature horses, lots of birds, chickens, and a cat or two roaming around. The cabin is super comfortable in every way, with multiple places to work on my laptop (porch, dining table, couch, chairs on the porch, bed) and even in the heat of summer it's been cool and comfortable with multiple air conditioners and ceiling fans. I love that JBB is family-owned and operated, and Patti is just one of the best people you'll ever meet.

The parking was free, which I heard it is usually during the week, it's conveniently located near the beach. It is quite small, so I'm assuming it packs up very quick but luckily we got there early and there was not a lot of people. The beach itself was very clean and peaceful. For decades, it was an unincorporated part of the county with no local government or emergency services. It was a free, barren, no-man's land. It was a semblance of the Wild West and, we liked it that way! Nowadays, I believed it's been annexed by the Port of Freeport. Bryan Beach is a lot of different things. It's possibly the ugliest beach in the world. Definitely, the ugliest in Texas. At the same time, it can reveal great beauty (mostly when the lights are off). It's a quickly eroding coastline, barely able to drive on or pitch a tent on. Fishing is great. Of course, you might want to catch and release as the river mouth passes a terrifying amount of pesticides, fertilizers, and God knows what else. Rip currents and an abundance of sharks make swimming dangerous. There's also sometimes dangerous people there. It's really a blank canvas. You can make it whatever you want. I've had incredible beach parties there in the past. Huge bonfires, cooking up dinner, camping out, insane amounts of alcohol.... With the right group, you can have the time of your life there. Maybe it's a weird portal to another dimension. Who knows? Bryan Beach is what you make it.
