I'll never go back to this grocery store. I was looking for blueberries and I approach this young kid pulling out moldy blueberries. I mean MOLDY. I asked what are you doing? He said I'm told to pick out the bad ones. I said those need to be thrown away they are all molded. If they have that much mold they all have mold. Oh I'd get in trouble of if I throw them away. I'm told to pick out the bad ones. Needless to say I never bought any fruit. What is going on with the tasteless rotten food in stores? The fruit has zero taste. I bought carrots everyone says these have no taste. Was odd. I bought a cantaloupe no taste. They taste fake to have no flavor. But, like I said open and look at your fruit/veggies very carefully. There really wasn't much music, but when I got home and called customer service about a missing item from my cart. They were more than welcome to place me on a short hold, when the music was over I was overjoyed...they agreed to allow me to pick up the item I had misplaced. I stopped in the grab the Vevue Champagne for $44.99 deal! I don't use self checkout because it's always a hassle. We checkout with an associate and it was much worst. They were trying to get a price check since it wasn't scanning and it took almost 10 mins due to the lines. I have to show her the price from the app in order to get things moving. I went to Jewel to pick up Cherries. When they rang up it said $20.00 and the assistant screached at me "You have to have them in the app first." I couldn't get the app to work. I left and went to my favorite grocery store, Brookhaven where they were pleasant to me an got the SAME bag for $2.43! read more

I've been shopping at this location for years and have watched it steadily go downhill. If it wasn't for the deli and some fresh bread options, I would probably never return. Positives: - Cashiers always seem to be friendly and helpful. - Deli staff always seem to be friendly and helpful. - The best sourdough bread I can find close by. Negatives: - Meat counter staff not as friendly and helpful as they used to be. - Jewel used to have good quality meats with several Prime options. Now their selection is rarely worth a second glance. - Not sure if it's just the products I'm interested in, but they are always out of stock on many things. - I love Jewel fresh baked sourdough bread, but it's extremely rare to find it already sliced. - Any time I ask for help from the bakery staff, they make me feel like I'm asking them a huge favor if they even acknowledge me at all. - The case that holds the fresh baked bagels and bread usually has at least one fly in it, and sometimes you're lucky to find a twist tie to seal your bag. read more

Very unprofessional staff. I stopped a lady whom was stocking near the lunch meat area and asked, "Excuse me, where is the Buona Beef kept"? Well, much to my surprise she was like the " boner beef"? Then turns to a guy stocking and said "Hey were is that big boner beef, boner beef, boner beef"? I looked at her and said "excuse me"? She must have said it 3 or 4 more times. Poor customer service at the pharmacy, repeatedly. Tonight the pharmacist Marcus Kim refused to manually enter the HSA card number when the magnetic strip didn't work (even though I had multiple photo IDs on me) and said that entering card numbers manually is against store policy, which is ridiculous. I had to pay for my meds with a credit card instead of the HSA card. Marcus was rude and dismissive and basically says and does whatever he wants. After so many bad experiences at this pharmacy, I try to avoid it when possible and commute further out just so I don't have to interact with rude staff. read more

For months there have been several employees, in particular one or two older men in the produce department, who ALWAYS have their masks hanging off. I've been meaning to contact the store, but lo and behold, there is NOWHERE on any website for Jewel that provides an email address for any store or the corporate headquarters. Today, as I was walking into the store, there were 6 employees gathered together just to the left of the south entrance. None of them was more than 1 foot away from another, and not one person was wearing a mask. Several of them appeared to be teenagers, but one woman, who had a darker shirt on, appeared to be a supervisor, and as I was leaving the store, she was working behing the "courtesy counter," or whatever it's called these days. This might be the last straw for me and my wife, who have shopped almost exclusively for groceries at this Jewel. It is difficult enough trying to navigate the often self-absorbed customers in this Fox Lake store, where Trump and his insistence that the worldwide pandemic is a "hoax" are exceedingly popular. The lame directional signs on the floor of each aisle are nearly completely ignored; in fact, there are times where I am CERTAIN that more people are going in the wrong direction than that commanded by the signs. I have no doubt that some customers actively choose to violate these signs. It seems to me it would be far more effective to hang ONE WAY and DO NOT ENTER signs from the existing signage at the end of each aisle that tell what items are stocked there. So the active violation of even the simplest and most effective safety measures by the employees of this store, clearly condoned and allowed by the management, is a slap in the face to the health and safety of more responsible customers. Where the hubris to behave this way comes from is beyond bewildering. Perhaps the store management hasn't noticed, but just about two minutes down Route 12 is a new, mothership-sized Woodman's offering exponentially more goods at dramatically lower prices than this open petrie dish with a Jewel sign out front. We will be exploring the Woodman's store to gauge how effective they are at keeping their employees in line with the simple health guidelines developed by epidemiologists from around the world. My guess is they have just earned two new customers by default. read more

I have never met an employee here that didn't have a look like they wished they were anyplace than here. I have never had a front end (or any) employee say hello, goodbye or thank you. We just sat in the "drive up" Osco line to pick up a prescription for 35 minutes. When it was finally our turn, the cashier couldn't even say "sorry for the delay ". Done, done, done. We will never be back to that store again. I hate to even give them one star, but I have to! read more

This Jewel Osco is conveniently located near my friend's house who I'm staying with. It's about a 3 minute drive and whenever I go here, there's always ample parking. The whole Jewel Osco is pretty clean and the items I always look for is always stocked which is great! Check out process was all right. I bought a bottle of wine here and obviously was carded since I look like I'm 16. Redbox is also available here! read more

This and the Dominick's across the road are it as far as major grocery stores are concerned in the area. Still, it seems rather quiet on this day. Make sure you check the sale ads as that is where the bargains are. Anything else can be had cheaper if you are willing to travel to a big box store that also sell groceries now. The employees here, as well as at the Dominick's are extremely helpful though if you should need help. Something you won't get at those other stores. read more

This is the worst Jewel I've ever been to. The worst part is the people in the meat department except for the assistant manager he's nice but the girl that wears glasses and the kid that wears the baseball cap they are so rude so unfriendly it made me decide never to shop here again. I understand that it's hard to get help these days but they are lucky to have a job as well and should be nice of the people that help pay their paychecks. I went there on Friday to get king crab legs on sale and the ones that I picked out we're very small and when I questioned it the kid in the baseball cap brought out the box and started yelling at me it was ridiculous!! Then when I got to check out the girl that was bagging had such a Nasty look on her face like she was doing me a favor by being there, didn't even say happy new year thank you she just threw my groceries the in my cart and turned around with such an attitude. I live two minutes from the store but now I'll drive another 15 minutes to another store before I'll go there again!! read more

I like coming to this store, everytine I come here the store is super clean and inviting. Produce section is very fresh along with the bakery goods. They also have a great variety of organic products. Prices are great. They also have lavatory is case you have to go. Cashiers are super friendly and always offer help for carry out. The only downside is that the lines are always long and not enough cashiers. This is a busy store. Anyhow, I enjoy coming here. I recommend. read more

Where are the masks??? There's a sign on the door that they are required yet it's not followed by customers or employees. My cashier had his mask hanging off his face. The guy stocking water had no mask. Some random customer walking around saying hello to me and anyone who walked by - no mask. Also, restock your pop shelves. I ended up here randomly after getting turned around on a highway detour. My road trip buddy and I pulled in to check directions and use the restroom. The store is a little older and reminds me of the grocery stores when I was a kid - not the sleeker, brighter ones now. Things seemed pretty average in every way, except for the floral department. This J-O had some of the most gorgeous flowers I'd ever seen, especially their roses. Prices were the same as other grocery store floral, but these truly looked high-end. I'm not from the area, so I don't know if that is something that's common at Jewel-Oscos in general. The lovely blooms are enough to make me curious about their bakery/deli/etc., so if we find ourselves back in the area and in need of groceries I'd check them out again. read more

The customer service at Fox Lake Jewel is atrocious! I ordered a whole beef tenderloin on Sunday for pickup on Thursday. I asked for it to be cleaned and trimmed. It was not ready when I went to pick it up. Additionally, I asked a produce person to check in the back for some fresher bunches of carrots with the tops as the ones on display were limp. She would not check until I ask to talk to the product manager. Ultimately, Jewel only had limp carrots. While I was waiting for the beef to be trimmed, I was looking for Panko bread crumbs in the Asian isle. I asked a stock person where I could find this. He acted like I was bothering him. Since I was there for sooooo long waiting on the beef I had to go to the restroom. It was filthy. See attached. I've been to cleaner gas stations. This is a grocery store where people buy food. Worst jewel ever!! It doesn't matter if you have a quick 2 second question for the Pharmacist or want to use their speedy check out 15 items or less line. You will be waiting at least 10-15 mins for any line or speak to anyone there at this jewel. Save yourself time and the headache and just go to Woodmans which is now open and lightening fast. Not to mention way better pricing! This jewel just needs to shut down already. By trying to save money and cutting employees hours this Jewel is going to lose what small customer base they have left. So if you wanna close this jewel then just keep doing what you are doing. Everyone I meet in checkout does nothing but complains. Last thing that this jewel is always out of the inventory I buy when I go here for those items and those items are sometimes the main reason I come here. If you want to flourish then you need to change the way this jewel is staffed and same thing goes for having enough 21 years old and older employees to help the customers buying liquor. I have shopped at the Fox Lake Jewel for 15 years. They have went downhill so bad. I've had bad experiences there on & off with shelves being empty, old food on shelves, items not in store any longer & if ask mgr to get them back he will but then they don't stay long! I decided that my latest experience will keep me from ever going back again. I was sick & shouldn't have been out but needed groceries for the family & hoped to go as fast as I could & get out. That wasn't happening, as they were out of so much I was wondering if they were closing down! I had a young boy for a cashier named Kyle P. He called up someone to ring my bottle of baileys. The woman is an older lady named Dawn. D I buy my husband's bottle of booze pretty much every week & I never get carded, as they know me. Dawn carded me. I was so sick & not happy at all to stop putting groceries on conveyor belt, to dig out ID but never let on just got out my FOID card & she said I cannot accept that!! It is a state ID with my picture & birth date, so I asked why not? She said I just can't! I said well this is silly, you know me & this is a state ID! And out of nowhere the cashier Kyle screamed at me "it is the law to ID everyone!!" I couldn't believe the disrespect of this Kyle kid! First off you never speak to a customer like that & I did NOT yell one bit (I barely had a voice, I was so sick & had a headache so didn't appreciate the yelling) Secondly, I wasn't speaking to him. I then asked for the manager to come please come up. Once Jim Pugliese came up (who mind you knows me very well for many years now as I'm in there every Monday for at least 2 hours!) & I show him my ID & he did not accept it either!! He said I should have a Driver's License if I drove there! I didn't feel I had to explain I didn't have it because my hubby drove me & I text him when in line to pick me up. So I didn't get the baileys. Hubby took me to spring gr Jewel got the baileys + all the items Fox Lk were out of! We didn't get carded either. Day I was there was the day after my 49th birthday!! So I'm pretty old to be carded in the 1st place but then to not accept a perfectly good form of ID! Later that night I went to get my cold tabs that I bought & couldn't find them! My hubby went to work & I was sick & chocking, after making sure they didn't fall out in the car, I realized that Kyle P must've been under 18 & put the cold meds aside with the baileys!! The next morning I called corporate office & asked the woman I spoke with why they wouldn't accept my foid card & she said she had no idea & did I ask them why it had to be my driver's license? I said yes but they didn't tell me why! She listened to the whole story about low shelves & many times old & or expired food, then said she was sorry & asked if I wanted the manager to call me!!! That isn't a very good corporate office, I got the feeling I was just bothering her with a story she's heard lots before, as that store is very poorly run! They always use the excuse that they had a busy weekend & that's why they don't have any product but yet you can go to any other Jewel the same day & they will have product! So I tell corporate yes he can call me I think I should get SOMETHING for this terrible experience, don't you? About a couple hours later Jim P. calls me & apologizes & as he can hear me coughing & barely a voice on the phone he asks if I want to come in now to get the cold meds & baileys & bring my license!!! Seriously?? I said no that's ok hubby got all the things you wouldn't sell me & were out of elsewhere. He even had to make another trip the next day to walgreens to get my cold meds Jewel never sold me (oh & they weren't even the kind with Pseudoephedrine in them & those are the only ones you need to check ID for & you only need to be 18, I am 49!!!!) So Jim P. outright lies to me & says the card you gave is not on our "list" of acceptable ID's!! I said really, well corporate office said they have no idea why you didn't accept my Foid card & said to ask you why I had to have my driver's license? He shot right past conversation about that & said what can I do for you? I said how about sending me a gift card & I will use it at a different Jewel? Considering I spend 250-450 per week every week in your store & I got treated very poorly! He took my addr. & a week later I had to call him to ask why I never got it! He said oh I am sorry I forgot & lost your info give it to me again. Then 3 days later I got a whopping 25.00 card in the mail! WAJ! I have much more detail but this is a book but I will say in 15 yrs never had a cashier at Jewel be so disrespectful as Kyle P. was. Also the irony, a few days later opened cheese slices & they were covered in mold! The date was good (this time) guessing someone set them on a shelf & then employee put back, idk but this store needs a new manager & serious help or they will for sure close down. Have to echo what others have said. Once Woodman's arrives I will not step foot in this store again. The newest issue is having vendors and staff take up the whole aisle while stocking shelves. There is no way to walk down with a cart. Most of the time I'm leaving my cart at the end cap and walking to grab items. Other stores do the same, but there is plenty of room to walk. Meier in McHenry has no issues stocking while shoppers are on the floor. Not sure if it's the size of jewel or what, but they can't seem to figure out a working system. Furthermore, it's always fun to have my four year old learn new cuss words when he can hear the stock boys dropping f bombs with no regard for who is around. read more

I wouldn't normally do a review for a grocery store but today's experience compelled me to do so. I wanted to get some shrimp for the grill. As a normal practice I asked to smell the shrimp before my purchase. She laughed about it. It took three requests for her to allow me to smell the shrimp. When asked the third time she seemed bothered by it said "we've been going through a lot of them they're still mostly frozen." It didn't matter to me I want to check them for myself. They smelled fine, I passed them back to the lady who now seemed irritated by my request. The rest of my trip went as usual, until I was home unpacking. The shrimp bag was left unzipped and leaked through the paper wrapper onto all the meat items that were in the same bag. This lady has been there as long as I recall going there, maybe 20 years. I'm suspicious this wasn't an oversight, but a nasty get-back for my bothering her with a simple request. Like "Hey you want to smell your shrimp? Smell them all over every item in your bag, your hands, your counter." It sucked! It's not my fault you're working on Easter Sunday, direct your misery at your employer not the customer. Woodman's will be open soon and only a few minutes further for better prices and a larger selection. read more

If there was a zero, that's where the rating would be. I hadn't shopped here for 5-6 months due to a prior bad experience with the butcher counter. Today 6/25/2018 at 11:30am I was going to run in and out for a few items and I still find the mentality and courtesy of the employees is still as bad or worse than 5-6 months ago. I was shopping through the store, inventory stacked in almost every isle, moderate to heavy shopping customers. While I was walking through the yogurt isle there was a customer on the right side shopping inside the freezer doors, and an employee stocking on the left of the isle. The product she was putting away was in the center on the isle thus there was no room to pass. The employee continued to stock AFTER she recognized I was waiting. I was not going to ask the customer to excuse me, I was waiting for the employee to excuse herself and let me by due to the fact I was trying to shop the yogurt. No such luck. I waited for the customer and went around the employee. While shopping the yogurt the employee had the courtesy of stocking g around me, invading my personal space. I had finished my shopping, 22 items to be exact, and went to the front lines. Here I found 10 full cart customer that were looking very irritated about the long lines, 7 people in the 15 items or under check out line. After speaking to a few of the customers I was told they had been there over 5 min and check out people were really slow. I looked towards the customer service counter and 3 employees of unknown ranks were standing there as though they were oblivious of the situation. It wasn't until a cashier from the front lines paged for help did a male employee walk up and opened a register, thank god right. This employee did not ask for the next person in line which would be the appropriate thing to do, he just took whomever walked up! REALLY! A few of the customers that had been waiting were extremely upset, so I am a no hold barred type person and walked up to the employee and told him " common courtesy is to take the already waiting customers, not meaning myself, but other who had been there for a while" his comment was a "yeah, um I'm sorry" and that was it. How poorly can this store continue to run before they realize that the problem lies from within, starting with the store manager. After a had made my purchase at 12:00, I asked for the store managers name so I could call and speak with him. They gave me his name, James Pugliese. Since I was in a rush I called once in my car so we could discuss my concerns. I reached the front desk and I could tell by his voice it was the employee that I spoke with at the front line for not taking the next person in line. He said he would get the manager James, and put me on hold...where I sat for 23min before hanging up. This store for the past few years since Dominick's closed, has been going to shit in a hand basket from the lack of leadership, or someone who at least knows how to lead. I can say this, when my friends, new neighbors, or just a passer by asks where to shop for something, I point them to Aldi, Meyers, or even Val's and they should avoid Jewel like the plague unless they like that kind of service. Sorry to say it will be frozen in hades before I return to this store and it's current staff. What an incompetent leadership team to have employees like this under them. It just shows, great things can only come from the top down, they need to find someone to fill the top role. read more

Very disappointed in Jewel. After shopping with them for years and spending a few hundreds of dollars a week with them, my husband and I tried their "drive up and go" service to save time on shopping since we're so busy with our children's schedules. BIG failure. After spending time getting and placing our order online, we received an email confirmation stating the order would be ready that evening. My husband left to pick everything up and lo and behold, the "guy" that does the orders left early and they didn't have our order ready even though they charged us already. They offered no solution other than giving us a re-fund 7-10 business days later. No apology and we never heard from the store manager as promised. My kids did not have lunches for the next morning and overall, a disaster of an experience. We will never shop with Jewel again and look forward to giving all of our business to Woodman's right down the road. read more

Cashiers are always friendly. Staff is helpful when you can't find something and the store is laid out logically. I HIGHLY recommend the sushi which is made fresh daily...yes, sushi from a grocery store. I was hesitant at first, but have now had it dozens of time and the quality and flavor is always good. The only reason I don't give them five stars is there is ALWAYS a long line for the express lanes now that they've taken out the self-checkout. If there's more than 5 people in line, it's no longer express... Would like to see this remedied, especially at peak hours like lunch time. read more

My husband and I just moved to the east side of McHenry recently. We used to live closer to Meijer in McHenry and frequented there for most of our grocery shopping. Today, I decided to head to Jewel in Fox Lake - - -which I will never do again. It is disgusting. The floors are filthy, the produce was awful, and many of the shelves were bare. I walked out of there with only 5 of the 15 things on my list. It was such a disappointment to me. The cashier was very friendly at check out, which was the only thing going for them (and why I gave them two stars). Beside their lack of cleanliness and issues with the produce and bare shelves, their prices are ridiculous. This is really frustrating considering that there aren't any other grocery stores nearby. But I'd rather drive a little bit further than to ever have to go back here. read more
