When I saw the sign for this place, I thought - what a fake Whole Foods this place is trying to be. And IT IS. The Fresh Food Market IS a fake Whole Foods. But is that really a Bad thing? The Fresh Food Market has vacuumed sealed flash frozen fish. Tons of imported dry goods. And a lot of exotic spices. The Fresh Food Market has a dozen or more excellent coffee beans to be ground. And an entire rack of world-class teas. And The Fresh Food Market has a lot of these types of products, and other rare stuff, like truffle oil, and unusual pastas. But what really impressed me was the cooled food discounts in the coolers on the near right side of the store. Any risky food that The Fresh Food Market purchased during holidays or any other time, whose expiration date is approaching, will be put in the cooler here at 40% to 90% discount. THIS is the place to buy expensive Cheese at pennies on the dollar. I could spend all of my shopping hours here, and emerge with $375 dollars worth of things that only cost me $35. So - if you play it right -this may be a Great Store for You. read more

After having issues with the meat department and spoiled meat I am now struggling with the availability of coffee . . . Again. Early this summer the company was changing "supplier" and had very limited supply and offerings for the better part of three months. Today I went to buy just regular coffee beans. No flavor. Just medium or dark roast decaf. Never had an issue before. Today? There was not a choice anywhere Unless I wanted a flavor. Can't get just decaf coffee beans. Looking at the more expensive packaged coffee. One choice but at an absurd price. And no one at the store can explain why. Honestly, I just drove down the street to a competitor. Found exactly what I wanted and paid less per pound on top, pretty sure my issues are driven by poor company decisions but I may have reached the end of usefulness for Fresh Market. read more

I don't know why people shop here. Food is just average quality and prices are inflated to the point of being ridiculous! $13.50 a pound for deli ham? Over $11.00 a pound for deli salami? $9.00 a pound for American Cheese? It's made in America people. Same brand available for $6.00 a pound right down the street. Virtually every item in the store is priced 30% higher than comparable products available down the street. I guess they cater to whole food "want to be shoppers" who are willing to pay any price for the pleasure of shopping here. Me....I work too hard for my money and all grocery stores look alike to me. On the website or the app look for the weekly sales and features. For us it's the deals on meat, usually chicken, beef or pork that keep us coming back. Above average produce too. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this review, but I think it's important for a new FM location to hear this in order to bring it up to the FM we're used to. I'm referring to the new store in Algonquin Commons. I was so excited to have one closer but it sorely disappointed. The tiny price/product identifiers were all but impossible to read and there was no staff anywhere to ask! Very little seafood to choose from and only one or two of each selection. Only one person behind the 'takeout' counter with 3 or 4 of us waiting....and waiting! Checking out was almost unpleasant. The girl checking me had nothing to say, pleasant or otherwise. Then a gentleman came up and never even looked at me, rather, he groused about something and unhappily bagged my order. These may sound like trivial complaints but all-in-all it was not a pleasant experience and I'm not too anxious to return. I hope this new store can better train its staff for customer service and make identifying the food much easier than it is at present. I'll give it a few months to iron out the wrinkles. I appreciated how it was immediately obvious you could social distance within that store. Unfortunately, even with all the signs posted that usually does not happen. I didn't have to worry about it being crowded or even my own safety. Each register had their own shield in front of them while having their own masks on. I'm not sure if this place has limited entry, but that should definitely be enforced at the entrance via headcount to ensure social distancing that much more. Signs only go so far. I'm glad that this is one of the few stores that's not all for show. They had a pretty wide selection of store items catering to various crowds. It was clean and the workers were constantly moving making themselves available to you if you needed assistance. read more

I will definitely be coming back to review more! I stopped in out of general curiosity. It's a very upscale shop with a diverse selection of produce, meats and imported goods. If you're looking for those fancy TikTok recipe requirements for that new dish you're trying - they probably have it here. It's definitely pricey, but quality seems to be very MUCH improved over the cheaper options. Produce they have your run it the mill options, as well as blood oranges, persimmons, and many other "unique" finds. Spices and sauces GALORE! And an in house deli, butcher, bulk candy and nut section, and a small dining area. Just one table, but with COVID, any more would probably break code. Overall very intrigued by this place - will visit when I have a purpose to visit. One thing - there is no way to exit without going through a checkout line, so be prepared to shuffle out awkwardly when you didn't purchase anything! I had a DoorDash shopping order at this grocery store and had never been to the establishment before. All four of the employees I asked for help in locating something or just a simple question, were some of the snobbiest people I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. There was also another employee who spoke no English at the deli who was talking loudly on the phone in front of customers in another language. I would have thought about shopping here but not after this experience, even the 16 something cashier was rude and unpleasant. What an uncomfortable shopping experience. Not quite Whole Foods, but a great alternative. This store has a decent set of options for those ingredient conscious. Standout products include brown rice sushi rolls and an amazing in house pastry and dessert selection. Prices are higher than the traditional grocery counterparts, but the products feature less processing and less preservatives. I still rank Trader Joe's higher, because of the customer service experiences and the marketing advantage. There is no better grocery store than the Fresh Market. Everything you get here will be top notch. That goes for produce to deli to salad bar. You will also pay the premium price for these high quality items. When something goes on sale at The Fresh Market, it will still be cheaper elsewhere. However when I am looking for something out of the ordinary, like lamb or a nice cheese or fresh baked bread, this is my go to store. I really like browsing the bulk bins for fun finds and they also have coffee to sample and a huge candy section. I have a hectic schedule on a daily basis. I decided this year for Thanksgiving I would order Thanksgiving dinner from Fresh Market so I could relax for once. I just left the store and the whole process was easy and well organized. I am in charge of HR where I work and hats off to all of the employees at Fresh Market. Crystal Lake REALLY needed a place like this. Before the Fresh Market moved into town, it was impossible to get good organic produce anywhere within 30 minutes if it wasn't Farmers Market season. Then TFM came into town with their fancy classical music, their cage free eggs, their organic fruits 'n veggies, and their fancy nut bins and BAM! Our lives improved! Not only do they have great produce, but they also have the most amazing bakery section. There must be 10 varieties of pound cakes back there! I realize TFM is more expensive than Joseph's (which I still love and visit every week), but it is not more expensive than Jewel and Dominick's. So, here's what I recommend. Take the time to shop at both TFM and Jospeh's. I go to TFM for fresh seafood, eggs, hormone-free milk and organic produce. Then I go to Josephs for all the other stuff. Yes, this raises our food budget by a hair, but it also raises our health. And honestly, can you put a price on that? Cancer, caused by the consumption of and exposure to chemicals, is far more expensive than a weekly trip to TFM. read more

They haven't heard of trans fats at this corporation. Their cakes are just as poisonous as anywhere else. Often enough, their produce, including the organic stuff, is wilted and mouldy. Their dried fruits are colorful, but full of preservatives. Dried figs are not dried, they are embalmed. I would not touch them. Pros: they have the humboldt fog cheese and in general a decent cheese selection. Decent fish and meat cuts. Good nuts selection. Good Wisconsin honey. Fresh Market is a great store! They have locally grown products, great specialty items, and amazing customer service! Fresh market has all the benefits of Whole Foods, but still retains a quaint independent store feel. But, don't let the small quaint feel fool you - they still get all the best of the best foods including sashimi grade tuna. I used it to make tuna tartare for a dinner party and it was a hit! I gave Fresh Market a lot of the credit. All this and the prices are still pretty competitive! I don't usually like grocery shopping, but my experience there was a pleasure. They even helped me out to my car with my groceries and refused a tip - simply saying "We don't take tips, this is a part of customer service." Thanks to Fresh Market for reviving excellent customer service! Fresh Market is not the closest store to me, but it is well worth the effort of going out of you way! read more

They are a bit more over priced than the jewel or Dominick's across the street but they can be worth it depending on what you are looking for. It is a great alternative to taking a hike to the closest whole food. I hate that they play classical music to make themselves look fancier, but the staff can get rather snotty. As a loyal customer I weekly go out of my way to come to the Fresh Market to buy my produce and meats. On my most recent visit, on 12/4/16, I traveled in a snow storm to get to your market to buy my meats and produce as usual. Except this time, I was let down tremendously. When I was finishing up at the meat counter I asked the man behind the counter if I could have ground turkey as my last item. He had grabbed the 2.5lbs of what was labeled as ground turkey, charged me for ground turkey, and I continued on with my shopping. I had spent over $100 at your establishment on meats alone. When I got home and began to cook, I discovered this was not at all turkey. Instead, it was ground chicken. I know for a fact it was chicken because it had cooked to a white color- while turkey would turn brown. I also had someone taste it, they confirmed it was chicken. Unfortunately, I am allergic/sensitive to chicken and could not eat it.I had to throw out over 2.5lbs of this ground chicken that was both labeled and charged as if it was ground turkey. This turkey was suppose to go into 6 meals, and now I do not have 6 meals to eat this week, (that I already paid for). I am extremely upset about the mistake that was made on Fresh Markets behalf at my expense. With many other markets in the area, I may have to choose to take my business elsewhere. At this point, the customer service I will receive from here on out will determine if I will remain a loyal customer or move on to a different market in the area. I only hope your establishment can relive up to the standard I once viewed you as. read more

This store is not interested in my business. I hopped in on crutches and looked for an electric mobility cart. When I couldn't find one I asked customer service for, well, some customer service. I was told the store did not offer electric carts to its customers. I would need to use a "manual" cart. Was I expected to hire someone to push me around in some type of wheelchair contraption or to suddenly be healed and become able to use a standard grocery cart? Fortunately, I am handicapped only temporarily, and there are other establishments who are interested in making their sites accessible to folks with mobility issues. UPDATE: I was contacted by a store manager who informed me the manual cart "accompanied by an employee" should have been offered. I hope better training will be provided in the future so we can all be equal opportunity customers. Fortunately, I no longer need mobility aids. I have upgraded my rating from one star to two stars after the manager reached out to me. Perhaps I will check the store out to see if it really has improved. read more

The aisles are welcoming, and I ALMOST forget I'm not a some sort of Whole Foods Jr. What I DON'T like about Fresh Market is they have regular grocery items at Whole Foods prices. Although the store touts its fresh and natural grocery items, a look through the store will show you that a majority of the items being sold (ex- produce) are regular run of the mill pesticide laden fruits and veggies you could buy for a third of the price at a local grocery store. So while I love browsing this store, I'm pretty selective with what I actually purchase- most items can be found elsewhere for much cheaper. Sorry Fresh Market- love you, boo! read more

I have stopped in here a few times over the past year but have been going much more lately. Yes it is pricey but the whole atmosphere is wonderful. If you need a bargain store this isn't it. I have always found the produce I get to be excellent. The breads are to die for! They have a sprouted grain bread that is the best I've ever eaten. I was in yesterday and was looking for chopped onions (hate them so also hate to chop them) an employee walked by, obviously leaving as she had her coat on but stopped to ask if I was looking for something. I told her of my onion situation and she said she would gladly do that for me. She was super nice, I am a big fan of great customer service and they sure have it! read more
