I didn't think I could find a worse Jewel in the world after the last few I've visited, but this one is on a whole different level. Everybody here, including the customers, are just miserable, but nobody is as miserable as this one lady working at the deli who straight up does not listen and acts like she just wants you gone ASAP. It is straight up alienating and I won't return here unless it's an absolute emergency and I have no other choice. I don't know what happened to Jewel but it's like nobody cares anymore, which could be said about everything in our society, but it's bad enough they took the croutons out of the salads and made everything way more expensive at the one place that used to be my one-stop shop for groceries. This is a very busy but also very congested Jewel Osco. The aisles are generally tight and packed with stuff everywhere. The strip mall it sits in is also befittingly crowded and congested as well. Oh well, good for lots of foot traffic but not my favorite Jewel. We're not here to shop very often so it's no biggie for us anyway. read more

The usual go-to grocery store in Skokie, they usually have fresh produce and are well-stocked with items. Their kosher section could be replenished and attended to more, as bagels are usually scarce. Check out their hot food counter around 11 in the morning for freshly-fried Pizza Puffs - if the staff are resistant in frying up more (which they usually are), be persistent, or you can speak to the store's manager for a push. Let them know that you're willing to wait, which takes about 5-10 min. Prices are more steep here, but be on the lookout for digital coupons on their app. The customer service desk is very helpful in reimbursements and correcting your receipt. **Unpleasant and Unprofessional Customer Service Experience** I went to Jewel-Osco store around 10:30 PM on Wednesday (08/27) with my daughter. She preferred using a basket instead of a cart, but we couldn't find any baskets inside. While searching, I noticed an employee near the self-checkout area--he appeared to be responsible for collecting carts--and he was holding a single basket. I politely asked, "Can I use that?" His response was shockingly rude and aggressive: "No!" I walked away and rejoined my daughter, as she was waiting for me. When we were leaving, I saw the same guy collecting carts near my car in the parking lot. I calmly asked, "Why did you say no when I asked for the basket? There were none available inside." He again responded angrily: "It's company policy." I told him, "You could have explained it more nicely," but he repeated, "It's company policy. Period." I wanted to report the incident and speak to a manager, but my daughter, who was clearly uncomfortable, asked me to leave. This was one of the most unpleasant customer service encounters I've ever had at any grocery store. The employee's tone, attitude, and total lack of basic courtesy were absolutely unacceptable. I will never shop at this store again and will be sharing this experience with others. After reading other reviews, I noticed that many customers have reported similar rude behavior from the staff at this location. I went to this Jewel 2 days before everything shut down in March of 2020 (everyone was there buying TP), and I hadn't been back until last weekend. I've pretty much only been going to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target since then due to convenience and selection. But, last weekend I wanted to go grocery shopping super early (I hate weekend crowds) and my neighbor mentioned that Jewel's app has some good deals, so I ventured back out when I saw that Jewel opens at 6am every day so I could avoid the chaos of weekend grocery shopping. But, I really don't like this store. Here's why: 5 stars for opening at 6am. I went last weekend and again this weekend right when they opened and the store was nearly empty. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. 3.5 stars for the app: yes, there are some great deals ($1.99 for a pint of blueberries, for example). But, sometimes the coupon clipping feature doesn't work and gives an error message, which is annoying. The only way to get the sale price is to successfully clip the coupon in the app. So, make sure you clip everything ahead of time rather than trying to do so in the store in case it doesn't work. But having to use the app is annoying. Like, just make the sale price the sale price instead of having some things on sale normally without the app and other things on sale only in the app. I'm a Millennial and it's annoying, so I can only imagine the majority of their clientele being frustrated by it. 1 star for not having any hand baskets this morning when I went. I didn't grab a cart because I was only getting like 6 things (all produce), but all their hand baskets were missing so I had to hand carry my pints of berries around, which also limited how much I could buy. (And they didn't have carts inside the store entrance either, so I was kind of screwed/couldn't go back out to get one once I started shopping. They were only outside, which is dumb.) 2 stars for not having much variety, especially in terms of organic produce options. Also, they have things in multiple places (like two separate tables of the exact same apple varieties on opposite ends of the produce section), which is weird and confusing. Things are also often mislabeled. Negative 5 stars for the prices on anything that isn't on sale. It's obscene. $7 for an 18oz container of Quaker oatmeal? Are you kidding? It's like $3 at Trader Joes and Target, and like $2 from Whole Food bulk bins. A box of Special K is like $8 compared to $5 at Target. Even "cheap" pantry staples like canned black beans are jacked up in price ($1.99 at Jewel vs $1.09 at TJs, $1.29 at Target, and $1.49 at WF). Their frozen produce prices are even more insane. Negative 5 stars for not having self check-out lanes open early in the morning. Both early trips I've been on have only had 1 lane open (which was a cashier lane), so I had to wait in line for a bit because everyone was funneled into the same place. I would rather do it myself, and with the exception of TJs (because they're efficient and know how to tetris bag properly), I won't go to stores that don't have self checkout. Both times the cashier managed to improperly bag my items (I bought 4 things, yet somehow she put all the berry cases in upside down and sideways so they popped open), and the conveyer belt always looks gross because of people who don't understand that meat needs to be put inside a bag so it doesn't bleed on everything. As a vegetarian/vegan, and germaphobe, the thought of my produce touching the conveyer belt with raw bird juice on it is revolting. I may not have to clorox my groceries for COVID anymore, but I still have to because of salmonella and e coli. I like self checkout because I can just scan the item without it touching anything and put it directly into a bag (facing the proper direction so it doesn't spill everywhere). This is almost enough of a deal breaker to never come here. I definitely won't be coming here for any pantry staples, or even most produce, as Whole Foods and TJ's has better quality, more variety, and less expensive. But, for fresh berries it can be a good deal with the app, and their flavored seltzer prices for their store-brand option seem decent. I do enjoy the convenience of being able to run over at 6 or 7am. But when Whole Foods seems discounted by comparison, you know the store's pricing is way over-inflated. read more

This is honestly just a review for the deli portion of Jewel. It's right around all of the restaurants in the area so I may as well get something from a grocery store, save a few bucks. I'm a huge fan of the Zing Wings, personally. Honey are better than the hot ones, and I think 1.25lbs is the perfect amount for lunch. This might be the worst of the local (Skokie area) Jewel-Osco stores. The pharmacy is slow (I only picked it because my insurance doesn't cover Walgreens), they will ignore a car at the drive-up window even when you can even see that there is no line for in person. One time, I waited for about 10 minutes before a worker came over and pulled down the shade that says they're closed. Also, the drive-thru has no set hours. I've asked about that and been told that they open it only when they have the personnel to man it. In addition, the advertised sale prices are oft times not honored and when you ask about it, they tell you that you picked the wrong item. Today (2/4/24), I clipped several of the virtual coupons before I headed to Jewel. When I went to the meat case, the sign was there for the price with the virtual coupon just to the left of a sale sign for the same item (without the coupon). There were several different size packages (a single steak, a single very thick steak, a package of 2 steaks) all marked as being on sale. Since I wasn't sure which ones qualified, I asked a worker who said any of the steaks in that case would work with the coupon. The lady who checked me out said that the virtual coupons were applied but when I got home I realized that I got the sale price, but not the additional $2.50/pound off for the coupon. The other item in my purchase that had a virtual coupon worked. And, there is no way to actually get a hold of someone via the web site, at least if you want to email rather than write a (snail mail) letter or call. I want to be able to attach pictures of the ad, the meat case with the signs, pictures of the steaks I bought, and my receipt None of that can be done via a phone call and I don't want to have to pay to get pictures printed out. I tried using their virtual assistant but that apparently is only for online orders? We've been frequenting this Jewel-Osco location for better than 35 years but it's really gone downhill. Nice place to shop. Nothing too fancy but it feels comfy and they have a lot of various offerings that you don't find everywhere. Never had a problem in this Jewel. As with any grocery, usually if produce is on sale it's because it's either nearing going bad or in season. So if it's not in season, I use it within a day or two. Once I brought produce back within a day after it went bad, they made the exchange with no problem. I think for a smaller Jewel it's pretty well stocked. Friendly staff and good " Sale Prices " I personally never buy anything here unless it's on sale or alcoholic beverages, witch are often a great value here. I shop at Jewel Osco because it is close to my home. I like that you can get lower prices by using 4U. The aisles are very narrow and if the help is putting groceries on the shelves it is hard to get by. The cashers are very nice. If you need help putting your groceries in your car, the bagger will help you. read more

So this was based off a visit during a weekday about a good 4 months ago. I had to pop in to get a few things including some Valentine's Day related items. I had no beef here as it was relatively empty for a 9am visit. However I was looking for a particular item and for the life of me could not find any employees to ask for help so that stunk. The store seemed clean and their was enough cashiers to accommodate everyone at the time. I highly doubt I'll be back at this location as it's a good cruise away from where I live. This is the grocery store my family and I go to, we LOVE this place. It is so convenient, open 24/7 and has the best bakery products. I've been going here since I was a kid and its just nostalgic at this point that I go to just grab something small. I like this place maybe a bit too much, my friends once got me a giftcard here for my birthday! I didn't even know you could do that, I just like buying food I guess! I have bought everything from here - my prescription for which the pharmacists were so useful, the baked goods, makeup as a young teen, and some toiletries and of course, food! I love it all. They used to have self-checkout but now you get an express and they actually really are fast with it so its not a problem. I used the delivery service for the first time today to deliver to a disabled relative on a restricted diet. I carefully selected all the items in the order to conform to his diet and Jewel substituted multiple items that he is not allowed to eat, without asking my permission. When I called customer service, "Juan" told me that Jewel would not do anything about it. I also made clear all over the order that the driver was to ring the bell and take the food up to the apartment. Instead, the driver dumped the food in the lobby and took off, without ringing the bell. "Juan" told me that the driver is "under no obligation" to take the order upstairs. In other words, Jewel will deliver whatever it pleases, regardless of what it offers online. Its "service" is dump and run and I will not be using it in the future. While the store is large and clean, their customer service is lacking as well as old product are out for sale. When I was considering purchasing red meat (a taste preference rarity), I looked in the meat cooler and found brown meat - uncooked red meat should always be red. On a "Cheap Chicken Monday," I decided to purchase fried chicken. The pieces were not consistent and small. I discovered this AFTER I ate one piece on another day when I decided to eat the other breast. When I was watching the Deli Person put the chicken in the bag, I noticed that the wings and legs were small but declined to say anything as my dog usually eats those anyway plus the lady looked old and probably couldn't hear me. Shopping at this Jewel is torture. Everyone who works here looks like they want to jump off a cliff. Guess that union of theirs is working really well. The stories I can tell. Whether I have to repeat myself six times to the lady at the deli who deems talking about her date the night before a higher priority than helping customers, or a stocker gives me a dirty look because his palette is blocking an item I need, the service here is awful. Expect to be waiting too, the lines tend to be a mile long. They seem to be out of many things that I need quite often, and their produce is horrible. I've seen fruit flies on several occasions, and this afternoon their onions look like they were harvested when Jimmy Carter was president. Once I had to return a package of raspberries because they had mold on them, and the produce manager didn't even look surprised. He didn't even pull the other moldy raspberries. I've gotten attitude from these people before too. Whenever I can, I try and shop elsewhere. There's been times where I've been so disgusted with this place that I left my cart full of stuff there, and went to Mariano's instead. I had been going to this store for nearly twenty years and had spent tens of thousands of dollars, but never again. This Jewel is especially important to me because this particular Jewel sells brands you won't find anywhere else. A lot of Jewish products, like the meats which are outstanding. What ruins the store is that there are no numbers available at the deli counter. When there are a number of people waiting, there is always chaos and confusion as to who is next and sometimes arguments ensue. And it makes it hard on the people working behind the counter as they try to maintain some kind of order. Every other Jewel store within 10 miles of this store has a number system at their deli counter and it keeps everything orderly and moving fast. So why can't this Skokie store do the same? Other than this problem, I do like the store. But if you plan on buying some items at the deli, you may want to use the Evanston, Wilmette or Glenview store instead. read more

Not sure if it were just today or just me, but the items inside were stacked very sloppy on the shelves. I also walked down a few of the isles and seen deli bought items left on the shelves. Someone must of picked up food from the deli and decided that they didnt want the item, so they left it on the shelf. Also, if you buy meat check the date! A family that i work with bought meat that had an old expiration date on it, with a new expiration date covering the old date. Very sloppy! This is one of the worst Jewels I have been to. If there are items on clearance it is because they are WAY past their expiration. If you go here in the evening it is a ton of workers goofing off. I literally have seen employees throwing things at each other and screaming in some language, maybe Assyrian? Oh, and there is a supervisor named Lewis (sp?) who is off. He is this quirky little man with curly hair. He literally left the express lane with a huge line to walk around aimlessly without explaining or apologizing.
