I have seen some improvements. I will admit that this is still my go to grocery store because I know where everything is. I know this store has the potential to be 5 stars. I just wish it would!!!! Originally written on 11/30/2012 but just noticed it was posted on the wrong Jewel site (Lewis) when it should have been posted on the Green Bay Jewel's site. I have been shopping here for years and agree that corporate must be ignoring this store because they never have enough staff. They are usually running on self-checkout lanes only that get frequent errors and take forever to get through the check-out process. The only employee who seems to be helpful besides the one with a hearing impairment is a tall black guy. And he can barely be helpful because he is usually playing the role of overseeing all of the self check-out lanes, customer service and supervisor. The store is pretty crowded at night so I am not sure why anyone in their right mind would ever think one staff person is enough. A few months ago, my boyfriend was waiting at the customer service desk for quite some time to get a rain check and when he finally saw an employee walking by and ignoring him, he asked he if she could help him. She said in a rude tone, "What do you want? I'm on break!" After he told her he wanted nothing from her but her manager, she stormed out of the store. Two nights ago, I was there with my daughter and she was laughing uncontrollably at the fact that every aisle had items out of place. On top of that, we couldn't even buy any fruit because it all looked horrible. The bread aisle had a banana peel of an eaten banana that was black (meaning it had been there for a while). The other aisles had perishable goods in them that were not even cold anymore. The perishable aisles had not perishable items tossed everywhere. And when I went to checkout (at self check-out, of course) there was a basket of food sitting there with a floppy frozen pizza that was no longer frozen. At this point, I sent my daughter to tell the employee there were items left at the checkout. She retrieved them and put them in the restock-perishable basket, not the basket they use when things are damaged or need to be discarded. At this point, I was livid. I saw an employee in a white shirt walk up to the customer service desk and asked if he was the manager. He said yes and I told him that I have been coming to the store for years and it is disgusting. There are items everywhere in the aisles and then I picked the pizza up and asked if if he would eat it and told him they are going to make someone sick. He told me he can't control what the customers do. I told him he can control what his employees do. He then looked around and asked if I saw anyone just standing around to which I responded that they have had a staffing problem for years. He then snatched the pizza out of my hand and threw the it back in the pershable bin telling me they aren't putting it back on the shelf. I told him that if that was true, he would have placed it in the other bin and not to lie to me and walked away. I did happen to ask the cashier on the way out for his name. It's Mike. I will be sending this same review to corporate, but doubt it will matter. It's a shame to see that the Jewel in Waukegan is run so poorly and in such disrepair, but the one in Gurnee is fully staffed and remodeled and is never half as full as the Waukegan location. I guess they don't care about the Waukegan area as much as the Gurnee one and I guess I will be a new customer of the Gurnee location but will more likely drive the extra distance to Dominick's to avoid them all together. EDIT: So I googled Jewel so I could file the compaint and an aticle about their stock dropping and them trying to sell because of the underperformed their competitors like Dominicks. DUHHHHH!!!! Have the worst experience with a pick up order from Jules this evening. Plenty of things to choose from on the website put into my car, but none of them items were in stock as far as poultry. Now I had a coupon for $30 off a pick up service on your first time. So was all these substitutions start coming to my phone? I'm at the clerk of know hit my threshold. At the fourth substitution, I told the clerk via text I'll just substitute my own meat. I'm on my way to the store. get to the store he can't do the substitutions now. OK fine am I at $75 let me know so that I know the coupons are gonna apply well. They can't see my total. So my total could go from $50-$80 easily. If the coupon is not applied the manager said to me why can't you just pay for it? Sure, how much is it again she tells me she can't give me a total what kind of customer service..... standing right there with my pick up order. You can't tell me how much it is and you want me to just pay for it? What store can give you a total on your groceries? Granited, this is my first online order and I explained it they could've been gracious enough to just ring me up and accommodate me at this point corporate will get up for complaint who just pays blindly for something and not knowing how much it cost don't understand. read more

I approached the deli counter about 20 minutes after they opened. The SLOWEST person in the universe finally acknowledged me, although she had seen me standing there for over 10 minutes. She walked as slowly as possible to me and said "What?" Well, with such a greeting, I enthusiastically said GOOD MORNING! No reply. I then said can I get a 1/2 a pound of the crab salad? She literally ROLLED HER EYES. Then shuffled, grabbing the wrong container, shuffled back for the right container, took approximately one million years to find the crab salad, and filled the container half full. I politely asked her to fill it up. Another eye roll. Shuffled to scale, shuffled back to check price (again), shuffled back to scale, produced a price tag, sloppily slapped it on there and threw it on the counter then turned around and shuffled away. I said, excuse me, I have some more things I need. MAJOR EYE ROLL. Waited another century for her to come to the counter and ordered 2 things at once. That broke her brain. She said one thing at a time. Okee-dokee then...1/2 pound Gramma's Potato Salad. Her reply? Which one? I repeated: Gramma's Potato Salad. Another eye roll, shuffling, checking price twice, over to scale, shuffled back to check price again, shuffled back to scale, tagged it, threw it on the counter, turned around and walked away. I said, can I tell you the 2nd thing I wanted? EYE ROLL. SHUFFLE BACK TO COUNTER. She said: WHAT? I still politely said 1 lb Macaroni & Cheddar Salad. She said what size? I said one pound. She repeated, I said WHAT SIZE? I said, what do you mean? Size of container? She said YES. I told her well, the container that would hold one pound! Continuous eye rolling at this point. Shuffling, back and forth to scale and back to salad - THREE TIMES - to check price. Slapped the price on there, threw that on the counter too - which was so violently thrown it flew across the counter and onto the floor. I picked it up. She had already shuffled back to WTFE she was doing (most likely NOTHING.) I said THANK YOU!! No acknowledgment, no reply, no kiss my ass, no nothing. JEWEL, DO YOU REALLY WANT AN EMPLOYEE LIKE THAT?? SHE SUCKED! Even killing her with kindness didn't help. Clearly this lazy girl hates working, hates her job, and hates to wait on white women. JEWEL. I don't recall a time when Jewels has ever been cheap.It's just not one of those type of stores.It's not a ghetto store where you can go and get cheap produce and vegetables and pick up some cheap snack food and get out with money still left in your pocket This is a store where fortunately you can get everything all in one stop except for the fact that you wont have ANY money left over in your pocket! I wont waist time trying to give a review on a grocery store.They're all the same except some are more catered to those with higher incomes and some to lower.Jewels isn't the highest store around town in the Chicagoland area.I think that would have to be Dominicks.(Excluding Whole Foods and some other specialty markets of course) Going from highest priced stores to lowest: 1st..Dominicks.. 2nd..Jewels.. 3rd Franklin foods. 4th Walmart Super centers stores... 5th..any Mexican grocery store out there(preferably Lewis Produce, but any of them are just as good) I cant say you wont have an enjoyable experience shopping here, just that you wont be able to buy everything all in one setting here.That seems to ring true for pretty much all of these stores lately. This is the Jewel that I shop at most of the time because it is very close to my house. They just remodeled it, but I like it cause I know where just about everything is, and I also like to use the Self Checkout machines (even though sometimes they do give me trouble). I wrote this review based on the bakery. I ordered my daughter's birthday cake from here. Jewel is one of the bakeries around here who still makes half and half cakes side by side and layered on top of each other. Sam's Club no longer does half and half side by side cakes. We did a portrait cake with her picture on there, with white and lavender butter cream frosting, and a Barbie theme. The cake was gorgeous! Neither one of us could stop looking at it, especially my daughter. Not only was it pretty, it was good!!!! It was fresh and moist and it only cost me $44 for a 1/2 sheet cake. Deerfield's wanted almost $70 and another local bakery was charging extra for the writing, and all that jazz. I was very satisfied with the cake and the decoration. I ordered a birthday cake here for my wife's birthday a full week ahead of time. It was set to pickup at 10 a.m. 6/26/2021. When I arrived to pick up the cake they had not even started it yet and I was told they didn't have any whipped cream frosting to do my cake would I like buttercream instead? These people were totally unapologetic. Maybe it's just me but if you know that you have 6 cakes that use whipped cream frosting IDK maybe order enough? You can't do better than a weeks notice for a simple birthday cake. I will NEVER depend on Jewel for cakes anymore. They ruined the biggest part of a birthday celebration like it was nothing to them. I think a business should be judged based on how they treat their employees as well as the consumer experience. It's important to know what kind of business you give your money to and what kind of practices they partake in within a community. That said, working at this Jewel location was the worst. It was THE WORST job I've ever had. First of all, they hire tons of baggers and cashiers so they don't have to give anyone full time hours. This wouldn't be half-bad if the jobs weren't also unionized. Minimum wage, no insurance or benefits and no decent amount of hours. Sounds like a job that's not unionized, right? When you get hired you have to pay an exorbitant union initiation fee, between $100-$200. This is taken out of your paycheck and because you work so little there, it will take months for you to actually be getting your full paycheck (minus taxes AND more union fees of course). So for the first couple months you'll be working around less than minimum wage. The chain and SEIU must have a deal going on because nothing about this benefits the worker, NOTHING. Until they fully replace the check-out with self-checkouts they'll only put up the minimum amount of cashiers, ensuring they're moving and working non-stop without so much as a minute downtime. You'll get one 15 min break because you'll only be scheduled just under the amount of hours that legally require them to give you two breaks. The entire rest of the time you can't sit or even so much as stretch, lean or show signs of being human. The atmosphere isn't friendly. Management has almost nothing good to say about your work. You so much as relax for 10 seconds after a rush of customers you're told to stop slacking off. You exchange words with the bagger/cashier you're told you're breaking the rules and to talk to the customers about nonsense the customers don't want to hear. Something new pops up you weren't trained for and they act like you're the dumbest thing on two legs. You mention that you need a certain day off or have a change in availability, the managers act like you've done something illegal and complain about how inconvenient that is for them, a company that gives you an average of 15 hours of work weekly. And if you need to point out a mistake management made about anything, be prepared to have it not be a concern and have it not be resolves ever.a I was lucky enough to not need this job and quit eventually. Most my co-workers didn't have a choice; many were parents or were uneducated and this was around the time the economy was taking a nosedive. You should shop at places that are good or at least decent for their communities. Working here encouraged me to be more vigilant about workers' rights. read more

There are four Jewels in our area. Three of them since the Cerebus take-over have become simply marvelous! Then, there is the Green Bay Road store in Waukegan. A good example of this was tonight, when I went in to get the Jewel chicken dinner special. The other Jewels in the area have hot, ready-to-eat fried chicken. The sides that accompany this are the customer's choice. Hunt Club Road goes as far as to put fresh mashed potatoes in a container. At the other three stores, if they don't have the required containers of sides, they will happily supply similar sides from the Chef's Kitchen display of fine foods. Strike One for Green Bay Road: The person working Chef's Kitchen had dirty hands, chipped nail polish, dirty nails. Strike Two: She seemed to think it was odd to ask for the meal deal. Strike Three: She wouldn't give us a substitute for the missing cole slaw. Instead, she insisted we take something from the remaining items. I asked why she couldn't just do what the other stores do, and give us cole slaw from the counter. No. She did finally ask her manager, and that was Strike Four. The manager handed us two containers of another packaged cole slaw. She claimed that was the ONLY way it could be done. Nobody smiles at this store. Nobody is willing to go that little extra. The wisest thing to do is drive to Lewis Avenues, where the people are friendly and want your business, or go to Hunt Club Road or the one on Route 120 (Belvidere Road). Stay away from Green Bay Road Jewel unless you really need something. read more

Be careful with the prices ive gone sometimes and they dont seem to get their price tags right i dont know if they still do it but the deal was if u told them about the price not being right n u purchased the product they would give u ur money back if it was under five dolars so the item would be free...also lately their fruits and vegetables arent as pretty as could be (there was one day that i went and most of the fruits and vegetables were rotten). If I could give zero stars I would. I've gone to this Jewel for 20 years as I live just a smidge west on Grand and it's VERY convenient. I loved the Employees that worked her 10ish years ago. Everyone knew me And I them. They would ask about my kids and were always just enjoyable to be around. (Unfortunately Jewel didn't want pay salaries to tenured employees. They wound up cutting their hours and adding new people at a very low dollar amount) The selection was excellent, you never had to be you worried about expired product, fruits and vegetables were fresh and looked good. Fast forward to 2017. 90% of the employees are rude (Vincent is the absolute worst) unhelpful and kids that just kind of look at you with a Blank Stare if you have any questions or comments. With that said there is a bright spot his name is Moses and he works overnight. Always so helpful and friendly. I usually pop in around 5 a.m. he's even willing to bag my groceries when I go through self-checkout. Unfortunately there are no longer self-checkouts and the lines are incredibly long with not enough help and non-existent baggers. As for the actual product they sell I can't tell you how many times I have have bought expired product or meat that had turned bad. They're always good about exchanging but who wants to constantly go back to exchange stuff. I had a horrible experience last weekend and will not be going back. The manager of the store Joe was very apologetic and truly meant it but his counterpart Sandra the store Supervisor was horrid. After I asked for my coupons to be applied the girl didn't checking did know how to do it. While I was trying to figure out the situation she's looking at people behind me handing them dollar off coupons telling them how sorry she was for the inconvenience rolling her eyes. i dont think ill ever go to this store again...every time something is wrong..oneday its a wrong price ring up, another its a rude employee..today while the cashiere is ringing me up, someone comes to her to say hello, so she stops ringing me and starts talking to this person..about a minute later, i made a noise, and she returned to me..thats rude..i was the one with the money in my hand. twas clear that to her this was normal. one big thing..jewels as a chain offers buy one get one free items..im standing next to 2 coolers..one has chix breasts for 3.49/lb..the one 5 feet away has bogo chix breast for 7.99/lb. this happensa constantly..to day i saw ribs which go for 3/lb everywhere at 6.99 bogo.. its like the my pillow thing. deceptive advertising. jewels has become too much trouble to shop at. read more
