Very nice, packed Asian store with mainly Chinese ingredients. Recently visited when I needed rice. But they have meat, frozen items, fermented vegetables, a zillion condiments. I particularly like their selection of Chinese style sausages. They come in convenient sizes for just my husband and I. As far as Asian themed stores, this place doesn't necessarily stand out above the others. It's pretty undersized, really has no aesthetic draw in its storefront, and is located in a plaza that looks like the setting of a post-apocalyptic flick. BUT what it does have going for it that no other Asian mart has is . . . well . . . there aren't really any other Asian marts around . . . The main draw this mart has for me is the convenience (location-wise). It has all your main Asian staples, snacks, sides, and condiments. Due to the relatively small space, your options are a tad bit limited but for the aforementioned groups, there is a significant and satisfying selection whether you need some hoisin sauce, some pocky sticks, or some canned eel. However, the produce section is obviously lacking. Aside from some main players like bok choy and Chinese spinach, you're not going to find a whole lot of variation. There is also a meat section that even has live fish that they'll filet for you, which caught me by surprise; who would've thought such a small operation would have the financial capital to keep live fish around? Which begs the question . . . how old are those fish? Aside from some food, they do have a small section dedicated to Chinese kung fu and dramas. This really isn't my alley but if you're in the mood for some Chinese entertainment, I guess you could check it out? It seems like they got a nice sampling although a lot of the DVDs are in those plastic folders which are all heavily stuffed into this shelf. I suppose the Chinese entertainment portion of their business is seeing some hard times... I guess the bottom line is that there's nothing special but nothing bad. It's a fairly solid place to find and fulfill your Asian needs in an area where that kind of fulfillment can be a hard acquisition. Like I said, it doesn't really stand out in terms of its storefront presentation so it may be hard to find but if you're turning into a small little plaza area and your first thought it, "Jeez . . . I hope a zombie doesn't pop out all of a sudden", you're probably in the right place. read more

Three stars here not really because it's really special -- but in this area, you're not really going to find a convenient Chinese market that covers most items that you'll need for Chinese cooking AND gets a shipment of bakery and BBQ goods from Chinatown. The next closest is the Asian Mart in Palatine by Sushi Para, but this place is a little bit larger, is less crowded, seems to manage the inventory better, and has a small selection of paper goods to burn for the ancestors. With that said, they also don't carry some of the specialty tofu and noodle items and medicine that the palatine location does -- but they also have more frozen items and a much larger fresh BBQ/bakery selection than the Palatine market does. If you are looking for pure convenience and specialty Chinese items, definitely check this place out but if you're looking for a lot more choice and the best quality -- take a longer trip to H-Mart for what you need. read more

Address on here is slightly off, it should be 1408 Townline Rd. Mundelein, IL NOT 1480. This place is located behind Schwake Stone Bridge and Fireplace. Basically no Asian grocery store can possibly be 5 stars, but for the fact that it is located in Mundelein and has most of your basic Asian grocery needs, it deserves 4. They pretty much carry everything that you can find in Chinatown or Little Vietnam in Argyle, without you actually having to go into Chicago and have to deal with parking and rude drivers. Basically the only reason why this place is here is convenience. I am actually very surprised to discover this place, this place has genuine Chinese grocery. Whereas places in Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights predominantly caters to Japanese or Korean preferences. You will hear Mandarin music playing in this store. Most items here are a tad more expensive than you would find in Chicago, because they added the few extra 50 cent or so in there to transport the food up to you from downtown. Certain items the price remains consistent with downtown. Didn't find anything expired, but did find some stuff close to being expired. I was surprised they even sell Chinese bakery goods and roast duck and chicken here. Also has live fish. Which, I am not purchasing because I feel terrible for the fish. read more

There is no signage when you driving by this place so it is a little harder to find. The store is pretty small. It has three aisles total and they are short. There is a refrigerated section on the right side wall and a freezer section on the left. In the back is a small butchers area. They have a few shopping carts at the front but I couldn't find any baskets which would have been preferred since there isn't a lot of space and I assume most people stopping here aren't buying that much. I thought they did a good job of having english labels on everything including the food that they produce themselves and sell there but I was disappointed that almost everything I saw had MSG in it and other chemicals. Even though some of the items had "all natural" printed on the outside. I think it's a good spot if you're in a pinch and need to grab a random asian food item but overall I don't plan on doing the bulk of my grocery shopping here. read more

This is where I get my rice by the sack and MAMA ramen by the box and many weird Asian veggies/fruit. Also childhood snacks like lychee jelly and such. Good selection of name brand, general Asian stuff. And the smell when you walk through the doors transports you. Also, friendly staff. HOWEVER THIS IS A CHINESE STORE, NOT A VIETNAMESE STORE, so you're not going to find some SE Asian produce or products you may hope for. They don't have what Cambodians call spey chunkuh (kind of like bok choy mixed with spinach?) and no galangal or turmeric to speak of. Also some other random things you could find in any Vietnamese/Cambodian roadside shop. Still the best Asian grocery I've found between Uptown Chicago and Milwaukee. Pretty decent range of items, focus is Chinese. Glad that there is a well stocked Asian grocery store in this side of the northern suburbs. Sure beats driving 20 to 30 mins further south to H Mart, or an hour into Chinatown! Friendly staff and pretty clean. read more
