Welcome to the 5 star list! I needed an insurance appraisal completed for my wedding rings and needed to get them buffed/polished. I sent out a Facebook request and questions to my friends. We received info on many good jewelers in our area but none who could appraise while we wait and buff/polish platinum onsite. That is until one friend recommend The Jewelry Doctor. We did check out YELP reviews and called before coming. The deal is $250 and covers up to 3 items for appraisal. My husband and I were warmly greeted right away when we walked in. The jeweler inspected my diamonds in front of me and showed me where 1 was visibly loose. He then explained the appraisal process and reviewed our paperwork. He told us to expect the rings back in about a half hour. Not only was the appraisal done but the rings were polished and cleaned. They were great about buffing out some scratches they missed the first time and my ring was almost like new again! In the future a polish/buffing will cost $25 a ring. We both were impressed with the knowledge and service of these two fantastic jewelers. We have found our go-to spot and highly recommend them to others. read more

This review is for Gino only. Mike has been fantastic / polite in all my interactions with him. Unfortunately, I worked entirely with Gino. I purchased a vintage watch online that was running slow. The seller indicated he would cover reasonable servicing costs if I took it to a local jeweler to repair. I went to Jewelry Doctor just before Christmas; Gino said he would take a look after the holiday and give me a quote on price + his recommendation for what needed to be done. This was especially important because I was getting reimbursed by the watch seller, and he requested that I post him on the cost before getting any work done (since he didn't want to just write a blank check). Gino calls me a few wks later and says "I fixed it, you owe me $100. It's ready for pick up". The first question I asked was what he did to fix it (both because I am curious about watches and wanted to post my seller what was wrong). Gino immediately says "no offense, but you seem like you're a pretty particular person and remind me of some of my annoying clients that want watches to run +/- 1 second a day. That's not realistic". I said nothing to indicate that and realize that automatic movements do not keep time as accurately as quartz. Then I reminded him that he was supposed to tell me the price for us to mutually agree before he did any work. Gino starts yelling at me and says "you're such an annoying young person who has no idea what they're talking about. I don't want your business. I'm going to undo everything I did and you can take your business elsewhere. Then he slams the phone." Thankfully, he didn't damage my watch further and I was able to pick it up in its original condition. There are a few things about Gino that made my experience very negative: 1/ No emotional maturity / very egotistical: He escalates a situation very quickly. When I referenced our agreement that he would post me first on price, he started yelling at me for no reason. When I asked him what I said / did that bothered him, he said he couldn't articulate anything and said "It's not you, it's everyone. Everything is so annoying to me" He cannot work through any type of misunderstanding / disagreement without yelling. He also repeatedly said "I have serviced Pateks in the past, so I don't want to hear anything you have to say." I wasn't giving any input how he should do his job - I just wanted to know what was wrong with my watch and why he fixed it without calling me first. 2/ Consistently cuts you off: I struggled to get any sentences in because he kept cutting me off. It's likely he totally forgot that he agreed to call me first before fixing because I emphasized that I would be reimbursed for this by a 3rd party. 3/ Questionable ability as jeweler: when I first handed him my watch, he immediately said that the crown was broken and that I bought a faulty watch. I was a bit confused, because I showed him that you need to unscrew the crown to wind the watch (and it was working - it was just running a bit slow). I was a bit surprised by this, because it is fairly common for automatic watches to have this feature. read more

I did work with Gino and Mike about a month ago. I think they are really great guys. They are really friendly and dedicated to honestly, with very reasonable prices. Although I liked them personally, I regret that I cannot give them more than 2 stars because ultimately they did not do a good job with my jewelry. I had brought my engagement ring to them. My engagement ring was custom built by another jeweler, and a white gold custom setting (the head where the diamond lays on) was put onto a yellow gold band. Although I didn't like the mixed metal look, I loved the overall look of the ring that this other jeweler built for me (the other jeweler lived in update ny where my parents are from, which is why I didn't want to go all the way up there again). I went to Gino and Mike and told them, I want this exact look, but instead of the band being yellow gold, I'd like it to be white gold. They agreed and said yes, we can do it. They even agreed to a quick timeline- which was really great. However, when the work was finally done, the ring WAS NOT the same design as my original designer had done. 1- the band was much wider than the original band and 2- the setting was fused in-line with the band instead of ontop of the band (as the original ring was). Point # 2 was the worst because the original jewel custom built the settings to look like hearts, and when Jewelry Doctor soddered the setting in-line with the band, it ruined the look of the hearts. When I first saw the ring, I was honestly in shock and I left the store just saying "okay its fine". After about an hour or so I just started crying because I felt as though I didn't get at all what I wanted and moreover, they ruined my engagement ring. To be fair to them, I have not gone back to the store and asked them to remedy the situation, so I don't know if they'd fix it or not. read more

I can not say enough GREAT things about this place. I have been using them for years. First, the staff are genuinely nice and caring people. They remember your face even if it has been a while since seeing you last. (They even still have a thank you note I wrote them 8+ years ago!) They make you feel at home in their shop and they take care of your jewelry as if it was their own. Secondly, they take great pride in the work they do, as they should! They are perfectionists who make sure your jewelry gets the attention it needs and deserves. I had them restore my husband's grandfather's pocket watch for our wedding. Although this was something they couldn't fix while you wait they kept me informed throughout the process. They were able to get the watch up and running again and cleaned it up so it looked brand new again! I was so impressed that I then had them engrave it for me. The look on my husband's face when I gave it to him was priceless. Such a wonderful memory to have. Next, they are quick and thorough with the work that they do. I brought them a couple of broken chains, a broken watch band and the watch also needed a new battery. They had it all fixed within a half an hour and they had it all shined and cleaned up. I hadn't noticed that the lock on the watch band was loose and they told me that they fixed that for me as well! They also cleaned up my wedding and engagement rings while I paid. They do all of this with great pride, attention to detail, in a timely manner and it is all done at a VERY reasonable price. A few years back I moved out of the Metuchen/Edison area. Metuchen's finest! First visit, I walked in and they fixed the kink in my husband's cherished father's chain while I waited. Second visit, I was in search of crosses and chains for my daughter and I. Although their store merchandise is dated and seemed more like shopping at an estate sale I was given a large book to choose from. I sat on my own for at least an hour with the book, as large as an encyclopedia, and chose exactly what I wanted. Both necklaces were delivered within a week and they were exactly what I wanted. I then inquired about my engagement ring and wedding band which were both only about 2 years old. They were 14k gold (malleable) and had bent to the point that they were hard to get on and off. Also, I had lost, in total, 11 stones mostly pave diamonds. I considered recreating my exact ring in white gold. After inspecting my ring Gino insisted he could recreate my ring in the same yellow gold but properly. The small diamonds in my original ring were set just beneath the surface. He reassured me that he could set them properly by placing the stones into my rings and not just on the surface. It was difficult to take my rings off and hand them over. My main concern was that my new rings would still have all the exact and intricate etching, an antique look, that my original rings had. For safe keeping they insisted I keep the main engagement stone in my possession. After a few weeks of constant contact via phone conversations, texts, and picture messages of the CAD design my rings were ready. To my astonishment the rings Gino and Mike created were bigger in size due to them setting the small stones properly into the ring. This was discussed before I gave the "Ok" for them to continue. However, my new replica is more beautiful and sturdy than before. You can actually see each holes where the pave diamond sits from the interior of the ring. I love the craftsmanship and quality. Mike, an owner of this business, is an exceptionally talented jeweler and an artisan who pulls out all the stops to restore your jewelry to its original glory. He repaired the band on my gold dress watch, which was a gift on my wedding day, and it looks as good as it did 19 years ago when I received it. This bracelet band had lost most of its gold finish on the inside next to my skin - due to the toll of wearing it often for almost 19 years. I couldn't wear it because the exposed metal caused a rash on my arm. Here's what Mike did: He refinished the band with nickel and replated it with gold - better than the original! He has the equipment in his store and he does the work himself. I left my watch late on Saturday afternoon and it was done by early Thursday afternoon the following week - all at an extremely reasonable price. I am thrilled with the results. This watch is a Citizen watch with the bangle bracelet band from Crisson's in Hamilton, Bermuda - and the style is no longer available. So Mike's artistry reunited me with my wedding watch.
