I started my jiu jitsu journey here in my 30s and have been doing it for 6 months. I checked out other gyms in the area and settled with this one, reasons below: - INJURY PREVENTION These people really take injury prevention seriously by putting in rules in rolling. Instructors usually do not roll and instead watch. I've never felt unsafe, in fact I've seen preventative measures employed. -HYGIENE As soon as something about staph and fungal infections was brought up, these folks added wipes and ventilation, they also verbally constantly remind new folks of good practices. - INSTRUCTION Instructors here are all great, very clear and welcome questions. Sometimes we have very cool guest instructors and also hosted seminars. -ORGANIZATION They have a WhatsApp group and insta where you always can ask questions to anyone and know whether class is happening on a holiday. I found this gym to be a community. People are so welcoming. I don't know how it would be if you're a world level athlete looking for super intense high level sparring to the death ;P but for a regular person, I really recommend this place. read more

KIDS PROGRAM REVIEW: My 7 year old son started training here in April and it has been great. The instructors Olivia and Ricardo are experienced, encouraging and patient, but no push overs as they instill discipline into even the most "spirited" students. Conveniently, there are kid's classes five times a week for different skill levels, all of which are evenly populated by girls and boys. Many of the young students compete (and win) in local tournaments. My son has really enjoyed developing his self defense superpowers, and is always held accountable when he's less engaged in doing so. Being smaller for his age, I have seen a rise in his confidence level, strength, and ability to apply new skills. He works diligently and looks forward to "stripe days" where students are recognized for their development by a stripe on their belt. A few years ago, after years of stress & bad habits, I decided I needed to live a healthier lifestyle and start, you know, exercising. My plan was to try a ton of different things with the hope that something would stick. I started trying everything: 24hr, zumba, yoga, boot camp, karate, cycling, krav, barre, cardio hiphop, pilates, kickboxing... The windows of the gym used to say "Weight Loss, Conditioning, Strength" or something like that. SURE, brazilian jiu-jitsu, WHY NOT. **free trial class** I walked in (with literally no idea what the sport was) with an open mind. and 15minutes later... open legs. apparently you spend the majority of the time in sweaty, intimate and awkward positions. WHY NOT. the trial class was interesting enough that i wanted to learn more about it. so i signed up for more lessons with the teacher. he seemed nice enough and didn't smell bad. i didn't know he was a BIG DEAL WORLD CHAMPION. Milton is super!! professional, punctual, patient. i ask a lot of questions, and he readily answers all of them: historical, technical, trivial, philosophical. he trusts his jiujitsu. i often chat about whatever new studio or gym i've tried that week, and he always says "i don't care what you do, just train more." no ego or drama, just chillin like a villain. he knows you will join the dark side. my kids started shortly after and immediately pledged their allegiance to Milton & Art. it's their second home and family. i don't trust a lot of people, but i trust them with my children. never thought (and still can't believe) i would keep coming back for more. try it, WHY NOT! read more

I've been "thinking about trying jiu-jitsu" for years and finally decided to jump in. I spent time researching the options close to my work. My good friend is a black belt training and teaching at another gym, and he and his ladyfriend said I should absolutely check out Milton's. My only experience with martial arts is taking a few karate classes in kindergarten, my main memory being the instructor saying he didn't get paid enough to let five year olds beat him up. Milton and Alex welcomed me on my first day when I showed up for a noon all-levels no gi class- I was totally nervous. Milton spent time showing me the warmups and helping me feel comfortable with the technique, making things fun and giving me a taste of what to expect. Jimmy helped me tie my belt on the following Thursday AM early bird class. He and my training partners helped guide me through the technique drills with patience and grace, as I struggled to learn and retain what they taught. Jimmy set up a sparring game for me to play (rather than letting me get destroyed) which was a challenge and a blast. I was already starting to get the feeling I would end up addicted. After two weeks I've enjoyed a few classes- no gi, beginner, early bird, each a couple of times, and have decided I'll be there at least two days per week - more if at all possible. Everyone has been incredibly helpful and patient, no room for egos, challenging and helping me get my bearings in what feels like a fast paced, somewhat painful game of twister. If you are considering BJJ, give it a shot. It's a totally new way of thinking about moving your body. I am amazed at how simple it is for a smaller person with a bit of experience to be so able to wipe the floor with a two-hundred pound opponent - it seems like some kind of sorcery. I've been taking the beginners class at Milton's for 2 months now and it's been a really great experience so far! As an semi-fit person in my 30's who has never done any kind of martial art or combat sport in my life, I had a lot of fears going into my free trial week. Thankfully this is a super supportive community and everyone is really patient and offers insightful advice to the white belts. There are regularly a number of women here too so I can always find someone around my height and weight to roll with. Milton's instruction is clear and easy to follow and a lot of the higher belts are instructor-types who offer corrections if they're drilling nearby. Having trained BJJ in college (a long time ago) I always missed the sport greatly. A shoulder injury had prevented me from returning. Before the pandemic, my oldest daughter (now 13) had done some self defense classes and I was looking for a BJJ gym once things started to open up. She started at JG about 5 months ago in the kids class and honestly it was one of the best things that has happened to our family. The kids class is fantastic with amazing coaches, they have fun in a clean, safe and inclusive environment. After watching my daughter roll for a few months I just had to get back myself, I cleared the shoulder with my doctors and I am HOOKED. Couldn't ask for a more humble, respectful and family oriented group of individuals. In fact, we are so comfortable with the people in this gym that my daughter also trains with me in the adult class (where there are many other woman training) as well. I've been a member of this gym since June 2016. I've been to other gyms, but this gym is the best on so many levels. They are very nice and welcoming to new people that have never done the sport, while at the same time have very high level competitors. Jiu jitsu has calmed my anxiety and is almost like meditation, where when you are on the mat you don't think about anything that might be bothering you. It is the best workout because it is not boring like lifting weights, and the techniques you learn are useful in the real world for self defense. Also, I feel like I am in the best shape of my life, even after doing wrestling in high school. Milton is not a huge guy, so you know his technique has to be precise to be able to pull off on other very good opponents that weigh more than him. He goes over little details that others might over look. We are very lucky to have such a knowledgeable black belt teach pretty much all of the classes. He still competes and is still winning gold medals at tournaments but he is not selfish to only concentrate on winning for himself, he spends so much time and energy on his students and shows passion to make us better when we compete. The gym atmosphere is the best part and Milton creates a great place where people can laugh, joke and have fun, but we also work hard. The greatest thing is the people at this gym. I think BJJ weeds out the assholes. You are left with the most humble, kind, self-disciplined killers on the mat. Everyone is so accepting here, it doesn't matter who you are or your background, we are all here to learn and get better. There is a real sense of community at this gym and I have met a lot of great people while going here. I also like how there is a good amount of lower weight people, like me, to train with. Why you should do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Milton: Some people say the best athlete doesn't make the best instructor, and the best instructor doesn't make the best athlete. With Milton you don't have to compromise either. As an athlete, he's a 5x world champion. As an instructor, there's no doubt he's one of the best. He's Google's official BJJ instructor, and nobody can deny that Google employs top talent, from its engineers, to its chefs, to its trainers. He always has a keen eye and will spot and correct mistakes from across the mat. Beyond his ability as an instructor, he's just an all around good guy with a great sense of humor. He fosters an environment where classes don't feel like you're just coming in to get that 1-2 hours of exercise you need for the day. For me, it's more like I'm meeting up with a bunch of friends, having some laughs, and working together to become better at something we're all really passionate about. Despite how relaxed that sounds, there's some serious talent here. We all train hard and love it. Even though I'm there 6 days a week and sometimes multiple times a day, I sometimes wish there was more time available on the mat. You will too! Sometimes people make a comparison of pricing between BJJ in general and a gym like 24 Hour Fitness. BJJ is a community and lifestyle, and I very rarely see people stick around yet make half-assed attempts at it. It will become your passion to get better, it will be the community you're excited everyday to get off work and be a part of, and it will be your motivation to not spend money on things like alcohol and bad food. The gains you make in character will reflect on your everyday life. It just can't be substituted by a gym where you're basically just paying to be a mouse on a wheel. I have been training here for about a year now and without a doubt it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Milton combines a great ego free, relaxed environment with excellent technical training and advice. There is a reason why he is one of the best in the world. At the beginning I thought I knew what my body was capable of and that there were certain limits it had, but after a year of training with Milton I am constantly shocked by the alien-like things I can get my body to do on the mat by following his technique. When I first started I had an idea of what bjj was, but what I quickly learned is that bjj is much more than just a sport, but also a community that you become a part of.
