When the place first open, WOW we were so excited and impressed. The green sauce is fantastic, but sadly the quality of the food (cheap fajita meat, VERY low quality drinks--the bar is really bad). Staff is friendly, but that is no enough to keep us going back. The building and restrooms are scary, they really need to move the business to a better building with real bathrooms inside the building (you must go outside the restaurant to the outhouse.....strange). I would give Jhonny's 3.5 stars. I ordered chicken tacos which I did enjoy, the one note being that I don't think I've ever had tacos this salty in my *life*. It wasn't salsa but the taco itself (the meat I'm assuming!). It distracted me from the flavors of everything, which is a shame because I think these tacos were solid quality. The establishment is nothing to write home about, but the pace of service keeps up with the pretty consistent crowds that come here! I ordered my food to go. The ambiance isn't especially inspiring but gets the job done for a roadside small taco restaurant. People were there seemed kind enough. I recommend giving it a try. I really want to like this place, as it is very convenient to my home, and so well liked here on Yelp. I've been here half a dozen times, and it has gotten consistently worse, and wasn't great to begin with. At 4.5 stars it is extremely overrated here. The place is quite a dump, which in and of itself is not a problem, as I love a good dive bar. But a dive bar this is not - this is trying to be a quality Mexican restaurant and it's kind of gross/dirty. The table top was falling off too. Unfortunately, the last three times I've been here the chips are crunched up, burnt, and taste like the oil hasn't been changed in a long time. It's like this place serves chips out of the bottom of the basin of other Mexican restaurants that don't clean them out regularly. Yuck. The queso is flavorless and odd, doesn't taste like cheese. Salsa is inconsistent. A small cup of plain bland bean soup will set you back $6. The fajitas look like the meat is sliced and then deep fried, as opposed to grilled, and the flavor/quality just isn't there. After this last visit, I'm sorry to say that we won't ever be going back. It sure would be nice to have a decent Texmex place around here. I sure miss Ebar in Dallas. On a positive note, the people are quite lovable, and the margaritas are great. Wow!! This is an unassuming restaurant in a gas station parking lot. Don't be fooled. My Poblano Rellano was better than the one I had at "Elote" in Sedona. I think the drinks got stronger the more we ordered. The jalapeño margarita is the perfect combo of heat and sweet. I'm a fan. This can't be missed. If you are killing time in Garland during a water polo tournament go to the South Fork Ranch tour then catch a meal at Jhonny's. I am a huge supporter of local businesses, because I believe they are the life blood of America's smaller townships. Jhonny's is just such a place. So, for that reason alone, I will likely visit again, and again. Now, I must say that I consider myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur of Tex-Mex food, knowing for certain the difference between it and "authentic Mexican." And, those of you who "know," know what I mean! Jhonny's falls somewhere on the upward slope towards Tex-Mex, between Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food. Which simply means in my household, I can eat it and like it but my wife may not. We have visited Jhonny's only once and on that occasion, the food seemed to be from fresh ingredients and it was served hot and as ordered. I ordered the beef enchiladas and a crispy beef taco, with charro beans and rice. My wife had the beef Fajita burrito, with refried beans and rice. Both of us were satisfied with the portion sizes and food quality. The restaurant serves Pepsi products and has newer menus than those previously posted. I've posted up some pics of the new ones. I guess where Jhonny's falls short for us is that it is a tiny establishment, with dining room seating for about 40 people, plus three or four at the "bar." Tables are arranged very closely together, so in essence there is no way to keep your conversation or table talk to yourselves entirely. Also, given that the restaurant was NOT full and there were two servers (both, middle-aged men), the service was somewhat slow and I did have to request a refill on the iced tea. One other little oddity is that the restrooms are not really "inside" the restaurant. They are located through a doorway next to the bar (just beyond the gentleman in the red shirt in the posted image), across a small concrete slab and - dare I call it a breezeway - through the door of your persuasion. The restrooms were stocked and clean. Like I said; I will visit Jhonny's again, but to say it will be my "go to" for great Tex -Mex, would be a stretch to say the least. If you visit, be prepared to be slightly underwhelmed, but not completely disappointed. And, I will happily update this review as time passes. Eat well. Be well. Cheers! read more

You walk in and it reminds me of a catina in Guadalajara Mexico. They have a small bar and tables all with a view of a TV that is playing sports. Your warmly greeted by the hostess who sat me and was quickly served salsa and chips. The green salsa has avocado in it and was perfect because it had a spicy kick to it. I ordered the poblano relleno and OMG it is so good! The chicken, mushrooms, corn, cheese and sauce make this one of the best Mexican dishes I've had in a long time! I don't normally like Mexican rice at restaurants because it has no flavor but the rice here is full of flavor and oh so good. The only thing I missed was Mexican sodas made with real sugar or maybe aqua de limon, tamarindo or horchata. However they do serve Pepsi products if you thirsty. This is a solid 5 star restaurant. The large guacamole was more like a small but the food was outstanding. I got the combo fajitas and I will be ordering them the next time, chicken and steak had great flavor, shrimps were nice size and cooked perfectly. Food was great! I have a particular fondness for queso blanco, and they do have this! It isn't quite as spicy as I would like, but put on top of an order like their chimichanga, and it is delicious! The wait staff were great and patient. There was a very large, noisy table there and they handled them as well as they could and we still had everything we needed. Was out running errands with the wife and Siri routed us home a different way. We were looking to go out for Mexican food on the way home and as we passed by, the wife said "That's a Mexican place! The owner, Jose, meets customers at the door, and it's obvious that many of the customers are regulars as they greeted him with a hug. After the meal, I can see why. After eating, I wanted to hug him! We were seated and an employee (not the waiter) brought chips and three types of salsa. One was a green salsa I thought might have been avocado crema. Boy was I wrong. It was like heaven, so good. I asked for more and flagged down Jose to tell him how fantastic it was. He explained the recipe to be roasted jalapeños, garlic, salt and vegetable oil blended into a purée. Sounds too simple to be that delicious, but wow! Wife ordered brisket tacos and a tostado. Amazing, looked great and huge for the price. I ordered the poblanos rellenos. I expected a cheese filled pepper in an eggy batter. What came out was a work of art. The poblano peppers had been roasted to a slight char, split open, and filled with seasoned diced chicken, onions, cilantro, corn. I've never had anything close before. It was amazing. We got the business card so we would remember as it is about a half hour from the house, when we got our to-go, our waiter brought out a styrofoam soup container with lid filled with the green salsa for me to take home.
