Then has some guy come out that doesn't work there and tell me to have a seat. This isn't a doctors office this is a restaurant. If I ordered food it should be done in the time you specify. He hasn't even cut the chicken before I got there so I left.,This has happened several times and I'm getting the feeling he needs help from Gordon Ramsay on how to Effectively run a business because this has happened several times when I called ahead and got there and had to wait an additional 15 mins For them to get the food ready. I recently visited Jiallo's with a group of people. My first time going. Had been wanting to try it out for a while. I had the catfish, some Jerk chicken, jollof rice, rice and beans and tomato & onion. I even got the chance to try their island wings. Everything I had was good, but my favorite was the jollof rice and the catfish....and the jerk chicken....and the island wings :-). Decided to come here for the first time and it definitely did not disappoint. There was one server/host and she was very friendly, greeted us with warm smiles and consistently checked up on us and the other tables to make sure we had everything we needed and handled it very well. I tried the Curry Goat and it was delicious; the meat was falling off the bones and was very tender and flavorful. But if you get this, just be warned that you really have to love curry because it's packed with curry flavor! :P My boyfriend got the jerk turkey and loved it, also very tender. And the plantains were done just right. The chef (or possibly the manager - I'm not entirely sure) came out to check on us as well. The food is also very filling because I could only eat half of my plate. I didn't even have to ask for a box, our server saw that I was done and asked if I needed one. Jiallo's is a great place to get a wonderful Caribbean meal at a great price. I absolutely love Caribbean food, with the spices and stewed meats and excellent flavor profiles. Jiallo's did not disappoint! We had the stewed oxtail (which is one of my favorite cuts of meat--so awesome) and curry goat dishes. Both came with a side of wonderful rice and beans, topped with fried plantains. The portions of both dishes were huge, and the the combo of rice with the stewed meat was amazing. The fried plantains are a nice slightly sweet touch that combines well with the spicy savoriness of the meats. We came during a quiet time of day (just got off the plane from Miami), and I tell you, the Caribbean food at Jiallo's can compete with the best we had in Miami too. My friend and I decided to stop by Jiallo's after the Ethiopian restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. I had heard good things about this place, so we decided to give it a whirl. I ordered the yassa chicken with jollof rice. One of my friends from Senegal has made jollof rice for me before, and from what I know, every country (and every person) has their own version of what is deemed to be best. The jollof rice I had here tasted as if it had been sitting out all day and was extremely hard and crunchy. The chicken yassa was very salty and one dimensional. I think it needed some lemon juice to break up the saltiness, however, I thought the caramelized onions were good. I would definitely be willing to give Jiallo's another try, but not order this dish again. read more

Truth be told, I don't spend a lot of time in the Indianapolis area, but I do pass through generally a few times a year. My husband and I recently stopped at Jiallo's on one such occasion, and we were delighted by the experience. We were there around lunch time, and got seated pretty quickly. Though the menu had various options, I went with the jerk chicken because I can basically never turn down the opportunity for jerk chicken (though I did strongly consider the jerk ribs). The chicken was incredibly flavorful, and the rice and plantains that came as sides were super tasty as well. Also, the portions were excellent. My impression of this place is WOW! My husband and I both had the vegetarian plate. We got a choice of couscous with tropical tomato and onion stir fry or red beans and rice and that comes with cabbage/veggie side and fried plantains. Very friendly staff. So friendly infact, that the waiter told me I wouldn't like what I ordered. And then when my food was brought out, someone from the kitchen came out and told me I didn't like it and asked me what I would like instead. I thought it was fine, but this was a very strange impression to leave on a first-time diner. What had I ordered? Curry goat and kassava sauce. Are these flavors a typical American palate would like? Probably not. But they didn't ask me if I've had dishes like this before, and I do not have the typical American palate. Having actually recently visited Jamaica and eaten there, the goat and cassava sauce were pretty typical of what I was expecting, and I did enjoy it. We decided to stop in for lunch around 2:30 or so. There were only three other tables full at the restaurant, yet it took forever to sit down. Then when we decided to order something on the menu it was either run out for the day or they didn't have it at all. I ended up getting their hibiscus drink- it tasted like it came from a high c Bottle. My husband got the fried catfish and I got the curry chicken. Fun spot with great Afro-Carribean music, delicious food and urban vibe. We ordered the byssop and the ginger drinks and they were interesting and tasty. I had the vegetarian entree and the servings were huge! You could definitely get the entree, a couple of extra sides and share it all with a friend. We ended up with lots of leftovers. We went to Jiallo's today. Were looking for something new to try and I am so glad we found this place. Now the place seems different than what we have here in yelp (I guess the photos are for an older location?). It's now a small restaurant with casual/fast food decor. That was a little bit of disappointment when we got there. So keep that in your mind if you're planning to go. We were greeted by the owner who is very nice and welcoming. He helped us with the menu since it's our firs time trying African/Caribbean cuisine. We ordered the chicken jerk, wings, lamb shank and grilled lamb or lamb steaks( sorry forgot what it was called). I will be honest, the order took more than 30 mins to get but the food was definitely worth the wait! Fresh and flavorful! I was really pleasantly surprised! I will definitely be back but maybe I will do takeout or will place my order ahead of getting there since it really took long time. read more

First time here. We were pleasantly surprised. We are adventurous eaters so we both got dishes we had never had before. Peanut butter sauce with beef & chicken yassa. We also got a side of stir fry tomatoes and onions. The white rice that is supposed to come with the dishes wasn't ready so they offered rice & beans instead which was gladly accepted & very good. We went to this restaurant under probably the worst possible conditions: On a Tuesday night with lousy snowy weather outside. Even so, our dinners were *perfect* and Jiallo's lived up to its Yelps! I had the "Peanut butter sauce" (Beef in a rich peanut gravy) and my husband had the jerk chicken so we could trade tastes. Portions are very large. The fried plantains are pure heaven. We loved their ginger drink, but be sure you REALLY like ginger before you get it because it is VERY gingery and peppery. The jerk chicken is tender and falling off the bone, juicy, and spicy -- not dumbed down for Hoosier palates, thankfully! Atmosphere: cute space with plenty of seating for groups and great for kids. It was not busy when we went on a Sat evening. No alcohol but great authentic Jamaican drinks. They were out of quite a few items *probably 5-6* and some things were cooking so that made it hard to order. Their beef patty was the best thing I ate that night. So flaky, full of meat, and yummy! Also had the curry goat with rice and beans and that was good. I think the goat could have been cooked another minute or two bc it was a tad slimy. Other items ordered were the jerk chicken, jerk ribs, and curry chicken. Those were all pretty good but the jerk is spicy! The portions are pretty big so you could share or have leftovers. It's hard for me to judge this place because I grew up eating McDonalds and my taste preferences aren't the most culturally diverse. I tried the curried goat. I liked it. It was good. I liked the rice as well. My wife and son shared the lamb shanks and they tore them up. They really liked them and wouldn't even share a bite with me. That's high praise. The chicken tenders my other son ordered were so surprisingly good...quite possibly the best tenders I have ever eaten, but who goes to an African/Caribbean restaurant for chicken tenders? The dinners were priced high, but the portions were enormous and can easily be split or shared. My West African friend who joined us told me the African food they serve is mostly East African, if that helps you at all. I'd say this place is worth trying out before it goes out of business (the owner and staff were very nice and I hope they prove my prediction wrong). This place doesn't have it all together, but can easily correct the problems I'll point out. I've come to this place twice now, but have only eaten here once. The first time I came here they were having problems with their credit card machine and I wasn't carrying any cash. There almost wasn't a second time either when I tried opening the front door an hour after the restaurant was supposed to open and it was still locked. The hostess chased us down in the parking lot as we were getting ready to leave. We ate together with friends and tried ordering several items which they said they were out of. I'm thinking, how could you be out when we're the first customers you've served today? Next, you'll find an unpleasant aroma of mildew or something funky as you approach the bathrooms, which were actually very clean. This location has never done well. It's in the International Marketplace area on 38th, but there isn't any direct turn into it. You have to turn at the Meijer sign and cut thru the Planet Fitness parking lot to get to it. I almost never see more than a couple cars right outside the restaurant, but I wouldn't let that deter you from checking this place out...at least once. read more
