The roof of our nearly 70 year old house has been a problem for a long time. Bought in 1967 just after I graduated from high school, I remember my Dad often doing repairs on it for the few years I lived here while going to a local college. And I observed and helped with that process when I'd return home for the next 25 years until he passed. At which point the repair process passed to me. Ten years later after my wife passed, I returned to live in Santa Clara and care for my functionally blind Mother and disabled youngest brother. The weight on me of a failing roof's maintenance grew. Roof tar, plastic cement, mineral roll roofing, even rubber matting were my partially effective tools in my battle. I was able to keep Mom dry until she passed and my youngest brother inherited the house. It got a little sketchy after that with a couple of episodes of buckets under problematic drips until enough plastic cement would thwart the sneaky sources of those drips. Three years ago my neighbor hired Jim Hageman Roofing to put a new roof on. I observed the details of the process, shmoozed with the workers, and listened later as my neighbor expressed his great satisfaction at the top level job they did. They covered everything with OSB, put 4 inches of foam insulation on top, then covered with a heat-bonded sheathing of TPO, snugly surrounding his eight skylights. I remember thinking and saying, "That's what we needed." Two years or so later later when my brother reached 62 we jumped through the hoops to qualify him for a Reverse Mortgage and finally had the money to afford this big project. Unfortunately, in the meantime I had developed the same genetic eye condition as my Mom, Wet Macular Degeneration, and blindness threatened. Selling the house and moving close to my daughter seemed necessary. But Modern Medicine saved my vision; at least for now, with monthly shots into my eyes. We decided to hold on in Santa Clara or Goldilocksland as we call it, as long as possible. But, a disturbing trend had developed here the last few years. Most houses being sold in our neighborhood were being nearly torn down before being rebuilt by the new owners. That would be our homes fate. My being 75 and having fragile eyesight, made putting on the beautiful style roof we had wanted no longer make sense if we or my daughter might need to sell it to care for my brother. But, I gave Jim a call anyway. He and Rebecca came out, checked everything out and listened to our unusual circumstances. They made suggestions and listened to mine for further corner cutting on a lower quality and cost job than they usually do. After a week of idea swapping and negotiations we signed a contract. Five work days later we had our new roof, immediately tested by the first rain of the season. Passed with flying colors. We are delighted. It's beautiful. Several of our neighbors, who can see it from down the street, have stopped to compliment us on it. When I carefully inspected it I found nothing to nitpick about. It's functional, beautiful and I can hardly wait until the skies open so I can smugly take note and enjoy the sound of rain on the roof instead of nervously wondering if my last repair efforts will hold. I started my roofing project for my home on Yelp. I picked one roofing company and then Yelp provided recommendations for 2 others. My experience was not so great and the proposals varied very very widely. Received a call from Rebecca this morning which at least shows they take Yelp reviews seriously. She explained it wasn't Jim's fault my roof shingles have failed and that the manufacturer was responsible for advertising the shingle as "40 year." Considering Ca. climate and conditions the shingle has faired well. It's my fault for assuming a 40 yr label signified the life of the roof. While I do appreciate the fact they followed up with a call I've moved on to another roofer as I'll need another roof before long. My 40 yr roof is actually a 22 yr roof! My advice is don't accept a term warranty as it's likely just a selling phrase. I give them 5 stars for following up. read more

The Hageman group did a great job for my little 70 year old house. The crew: Rico, Gustavo and Benjamin did a great job with only one setback, but made up for it the next day. The management: Jim and Rebecca very personal and hands on. When a question of specifications came up and they didn't have an answer, Rebecca got us on a conference call with the manufacturer to settle the matter. Like any old house we ran into problems when the roof came off. The crew consulted me in an impartial manner. It was my choice to do the work or not. No pressure. The tear off crew was fast and cleaned up properly. The gutters crew took 4 hours to complete. Some of my eaves didn't line up (cosmetic) with the gutters (my decision not to centerline and trim) but suggested a fix I can do myself. Anytime a contractor is at your house, you cannot be absent . As steward of your property , You must be focused on the work being done and uphold the finished result you envision. I was on site every day. Inspecting and there for questions and concerns. We selected Jim after getting 8 other quotes (!) - they were not only the best priced but also the most friendly and trustworthy. Many others sent salesmen that seemed a bit oily who would start with a very high price, then bargain down step-by-step - not a good sign! Jim, being the owner, gave a fair and firm estimate, and I could trust that if other work was needed along the way, he will be fair and not try to gouge me (turned out to be true). Jim & Rebecca gave us an extensive reference list so we drove around to see the work, and check out the colors and styles. We finally settled on the Presidential TL shingles (Shadow Grey), opted to add ridge vents and had additional work to repair the hog valley and AC framing. Once agreed, they started the work within two weeks. First morning was the teardown, and then Samuel & Juan started putting the new materials which took another 5 days to finish completely. First couple of days, things were a bit messy and one time, they left some loose materials that flew down on our neighbor's yard (which he wasn't happy about)! But they cleaned up well enough each day, and Jim & Rebecca would visit daily so we could review the progress and any issues with them. They were happy to take care of aesthetic issues like misaligned nosing strips, or painting the collars / framing to match the rest of the house. We added a job to paint a flat roof with reflective silicone coating, which they did for a reasonable price. They took care of the permit and inspections (city took a bit longer than expected and didn't print out a nice, final permit in the end). We did our own final inspection with Samuel and he took care of some minor details immediately. We feel the quality of work is good, and the materials / finish look very appealing. Other shops may come across as more slick or professional, and some are certified by the manufacturers so they offer 50 year warranties (GAF Golden Pledge, Certanteed SureStart Plus 5-star, Owens Preferred / Platinum). Jim says he does not pay to be certified and provides his own 10 year workmanship warranty. He also says manufacturer's almost never pay out on warranty as they find some other fault to blame. In the end, we went with Jim's avuncular trustworthiness over dubious warranties & glib salesmen. Time will tell, but so far, we are happy we went with Jim and have no hesitation in recommending him to others! read more

I contacted Jim after adding a few "Yelp roofers" to a list of a couple other roofers who were recommended to me. In total, I ended up getting 5 or 6 bids on my new roof job on my Los Gatos home. All of the roofers I contacted were professional, knowledgeable, responsive and helpful. In Jim's case, he met me the same day he returned my email and I got his bid that same day. He was also available to start the next week. As I recall, the other roofers who gave me a bid were booked 2-6 weeks out. While I did not need the job started right away, that is what I ended up doing. Jim's price was also the lowest of all the bids. I won't say by how much, but let's just say it was enough to make a notable difference, and it also made me a little bit cautious. But it looks like I made the right choice! After I selected Jim to do the job, he really came through on a few "extras" when it comes to service: Jim followed me out to a couple of houses several miles away to tell me which roof style, brand, and color those were (I liked the color and style but needed Jim to tell me what it was). My roof had a small amount of dry rot and termite damage. The added cost for that work was not much and it was done without delaying the job. I needed to replace 3 skylights. Jim got great prices and coordinated everything for me. The selection of gutters/downspouts Jim gave me did not have a color that matched my house color very well. I showed him another color from another brand given to me by another roofer, and Jim was able to get that color/brand for no extra cost. I had tree trimmers trimming trees and making a huge mess at the same time the roof work was getting done. Somehow, they all got along and coordinated their work without a problem. I put the entire job on my credit card, earning some good miles in the process. And last but not least, Jim's crew and his assistant Rebecca were very friendly. I stopped by the house several times to take a look at the work and shoot a few pics, and the crew would always say hi and ask me how I liked the work so far.
