It's probably been about 20 years since I've been here until this weekend. Took my daughter to show her one of my favorite places to visit when I was a kid. Brought back so many memories of my parents taking my brother and I here. Looks pretty much the same as it did back then. Except for the mini zoo for obvious reasons. Still can't believe at one time there was a bear in a cage here and everyone thought that was a good idea. We played a round of mini golf, played some bank shot basketball and topped it off with some ice cream. The mini golf course definitely needs a ton of work done to fix it up. The bank shot court should just be torn down. About a third of the rims are missing and some of the backboards are rotting. The ice cream is still amazing of course. All in all we had fun and that's all I can ask for when going to places like this. read more

I read previous reviews and was definitely setting my expectations low before checking this place out, thankfully it was a super nice day and there were ZERO ANIMALS. It did not smell, and even though the cages are still there, not one had anything in them. I don't know why you would mix food, mini golf and live animals anyway... This is a cash only place, whether you do mini golf, ice cream or food, you need to pay with cash, there is an ATM inside the ice cream parlor, there are only two tables inside but ample outdoor picnic tables, most of which are shaded by huge beautiful trees and lush well maintained landscaping. Ice cream was pretty good. The food was verrrrrrry slow. I ordered a large fry and it was really small, I even commented to the woman as she handed it to me, 'this is a large size?' And she said 'yes sorry' and my friend even commented, I wonder how small a small size is then. Highly recommend the fried cheese curds with marinara. Mini golf was the best. $4.50 under 6yrs and $6.50 for older. 24 holes... took about an hour. The holes are all well maintained and the landscaping was new and beautifully done. All the holes were fun and different and colorful. The arcade is small but there is a coin machine inside so you can have your fill of a dozen little toddler rides outside, we spent 2 hours here. read more

If you are looking for some good homemade ice cream this is a great place! FYI they are cash only, but they do have an ATM on sight. We love this ice cream shop because they also service hot food and have mini golf and fun basketball courts. The inside ice cream parlor does get very crowded quickly. I had a Oreo cone, my mom got the chocolate walnut sundae and my fiancé got hot dog and fried. No complaints on the taste of everything. read more

This is a hard review to write as I was first introduced to this little ice cream shop by an ex-boyfriend in the mid 1980's and have lots of fond memories during it's hayday. It's so much more than an ice cream shop, also offering affordable concession stand type food, mini golf, kids rides, basketball court, an arcade, and a few animals to pet or feed. When I was a teen I'd often gather here with friends after cruising the York circuit, or on date nights. When my kids were little they looked forward to the occasional visit with the animals and ice cream treat. In the summer it was always packed. But time moves on and this place is beginning to show its age. Over time the animals that once seemed quite tended to looked neglected and sad. Animal activists and celebrities stepped in. There was a lot of press and publicity. Jim Mack fought to keep the bear, but in the end he was removed and moved to a sanctuary to live with his kind for the first time in his sad, lonesome life. For him there was a happy ending after a lifetime of being caged up as a novelty. But I think the negative press started to effect the business. I know it did change my viewpoint on the welfare of the animals. My last few visits I saw less and less animals, the ones there did look unhealthy and neglected, their enclosure dry and barren. It bothered me so that I didn't venture back there during my last trip and don't know if the animals are in fact still there at all. My trips are less infrequent. Today old timers spend their day inside by the dining window catching up on current events. Teens man the ice cream stand, and except for a few scattered customers the outside activities are a wasteland of what was. The crowds have died down. The place looks tired. The ice cream isn't as good as I remember. Overall the place doesn't have the same happy feeling it once held for me. I visit now more for nostalgia, the happy memories that were collected and imbedded in mine and my kid's memories, the carefree feeling of being young on a hot summer day.... And hope that one day it can once again be what it once was. read more

This place has everything the under 12 could ask for: mini golf, crap food, great ice cream, hoops, bouncy house, black bear, and feeding zoo (you can't actually pet most of the animals unless you want to lose a finger). This is the second time in a month that my daughter has wanted to go here and she loves it. Ergo, I will be back. read more

Fun place for the kids and food isn't any worse than chain fast food, with a little bit better variety on the menu. Ice cream is really great, food service is slow. Would give another two stars but the animal exhibits are pretty terrible, the bear is caged up in a box and the llamas aren't much better with a ratty tent to chew on. Getting rid of the animals would also improve the smell. Nothing like a whiff of peacock poop to make mini golf less enjoyable. Really sad that their logo and theme is a happy dancing bear--the one in the box looked stressed and hot, wasn't doin any dancin. read more

Jim Mack's is more than just an Ice cream shop. It's a special little attraction, They've got mini-golf, rides for the kids, bounce houses, and even a (caged) bear! The afternoon we visited it was packed, we placed our order and then were called over an intercom when it was finally ready. The food was alright, not too expensive prices, they have a dollar menu available too. We had two pulled pork sandwiches, a hamburger and some ice cream, they also have fries, burgers, subs, fish sandwiches, hotdogs, etc. It's a great family destination, our daughter had so much fun. Friends asked us to go along to Mack's in the afternoon so we stopped in and got a bite to eat. I thought the food was decent, but not anything special. It reminded me of the snack bar at a Lake my grandmother took us to. The interior of the restaurant is like a small I mean tiny diner or ice cream shop with one counter which has a window outside and in for food and the other for ice cream and drinks. They have one table inside and 3 or 4 picnic tables out front and a several more beyond the parking and in front of the mini golf on the grass. They had no air conditioning so with the grills inside it was hot in such a small space. They had a box fan on the counter to circulate the air, though. The attraction to this location is the animals since they have a bear which paced back and forth and you could buy a handfull of dog kibble to slide down a tube to feed it. The other animals are ducks, chickens, tortoises, a rabbit, turkeys, alpacas and a peacock! The ducks and chicken with 2 chicks were out for petting and the turkey poked his head through the fence to peck at the grass. I think the kids liked seeing the animals and my son made some 'quack, quack' sounds at the ducks. They have two small arcades and a basketball free throw area near the mini-golf too so you can distract yourself for at least an hour. I didn't have any ice cream so I can't comment, but I have had it before and enjoyed it. read more

The ice cream here is excellent. This is an ideal spot to stop with the kids on a hot day. If you're at home on a nice day and are looking for a reason to get outside and go for a ride, this is the place to go. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, French Fries, Sandwhiches, Bar-B-Que, Milk Shakes, Excellent Ice Cream, etc. Fair prices, food and great ice cream. A Zoo, Arcades, Bank Shot, and Miniature Golf. Lots to do and lots to eat. This place is a lot of fun and a good place to eat. read more

Dad and I stopped in for ice cream after a countryside ride. We decided to get the quarter pound hamburger for each of us we both ordered an Astro shake to eat in. Dad's burger wasn't fully cooked and mine was burnt and dry. Yes, I asked for them to be remade. This time they both came out so dry you basically took a bite of burger and a bite of the shake or you wouldn't be able to swallow. Then to ay $18.41 for this is outrageous! My girlfriend and I went to get a milkshake and play a game of mini-golf. About 6 holes in our game got interrupted by who we believe was Jim Mack, absolutely berating the young high school aged girl who was running the mini-golf booth. It got our attention and we couldn't help but continue to hear him as we tried to continue to play. He was extremely rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional towards the young girl. At one point we saw she began to cry as he was telling her "just admit when you're wrong", as he was following her around critiquing and criticizing the way she was cleaning up around the course as they began to close. We tried to play on but it really developed a bad taste in our mouth. She was very friendly to us when we showed up to pay and play and to see a grown man make a high school girl who was probably working a summer job cry the way that he did, we decided to leave. I tried to speak to her as we left, and tell her to go find a summer job that she can have fun and that would make her happy, but she quickly ended the conversation stating that she had to keep going or else he would yell at her if he saw her talking to us. First the good: the ice cream is great and the food was pretty good as well. However, the place is really getting run down. The kids played mini golf and each of the "obstacles" were falling apart. Fun for the whole family. Not just ice cream but they have a small menu of burgers, fries chicken strips etc. Out back they have putt putt golf course and a basketball hoop course. But of course we are here for the ice cream. And the ice cream is good. Not the best I've had but it certainly ranks right up there with the best. They have indoor and outdoor seating avail as well as ample parking. The reason I can't give them five stars is the ordering system they've used forever. If it's not busy it's fine. Walk up to the counter and one of the friendly dippers will wait on you right away. Happen to go on a busy night? It's not so smooth. The area in front of the counter gets crowded. People waiting for their ice cream treats and other patrons coming in from the side door make it a very confusing mess for customers and workers alike. Best advice is to scan the crowd and if no one makes a move when they yell " I can help who's next" is to jump on your chance and start ordering. read more

Ice cream is great. But...........the animals look like they are NOT being taken care of. I was there last month and a white duck looked very sick. Children were chasing baby chickens around. Come on! The cage the bear was housed in a cage that now was parrots. Please, get rid of the animals and just have golf. There is no need to have small animals for a road side attraction. read more

My kids love this place. The ice cream is great, although the building is old, and the interior is pretty well hammered and cramped for space. I choose to go when I can eat outside at a picnic table. The animals in cages is kinda of a dated idea. Wouldn't a nature trail with water features be just as good if not better? read more

pretty good ice cream made right here in york. while they are open everyday all year long, the petting zoo and mini golf that are also at this site are especially popular in the summer. my favorite kind of ice cream from mack's is oreo. they do serve food here, burgers fries, that type of thing. fun, cheap place to take the family! read more
