I had intermittent issues with water entering my roof and leaking through my ceiling around a fireplace when it would rain really hard. I called and a few days later, following the weekend, their estimator came out, reviewed the work that I needed to be done, took pictures of items on the roof for me to see, and gave me additional information on their services and how they operated. I received an estimate for the work that same evening, including an additional soffit repair, as well as recommendations for service providers for work that was outside of their offerings. Upon review and one small change later, Jim The Handyman was able to immediately schedule the work. The next day, Senior Technician Mario and his apprentice Oscar showed up on time with all needed materials, went over the items with me prior to starting, and then got to work on the outside of the house. They utilized their time well and really worked as a team, and ensured that the chimney flashing as well as the roofing around the chimney was sealed and fastened properly. They also showed me pictures of what was done, and let me know that my gutters needed to be cleaned in case I wasn't aware as water could also back up and affect the roof deck as well if they were not cleaned soon. The soffit repair was also done very nicely with a more durable plywood material than what the home was initially built with back in 1961, and was caulked and primed/painted very neatly. When they came into my home to do the interior work around the chimney to check for leaks and to cut out the badly affected area, Mario and Oscar made sure that they first spread out and used plastic sheeting to cover my carpet, furniture, and surrounding areas. They were careful to move equipment and ladders in and out of my home so as to not damage anything. They performed the work, and answered the questions I had as they went along, and provided me with additional information on other services that they company could perform when I asked them about other work that I may need to have done. Following the cut out and removal of not only the damaged ceiling drywall and insulation, they also made sure that any additional debris and dirt in the ceiling bays were cleaned up as well. Now, the plan is to leave that portion of the ceiling open until it rains and I am able to check from the inside to make sure that it is no longer leaking, and if no leaks are found (which is very unlikely as they did such a good job), I then I will call Jim The Handyman back and schedule team members to return to restore the ceiling back to normal. I really appreciate the work that was done. Both Mario and Oscar were very professional, courteous, friendly, efficient, and careful with my home. The estimator was the same. The estimate and final bill were clearly laid out and payment was easy. I also appreciated the fact that the estimate of the work to be done was broken down by each part of the job, as well as having materials broken out and costed separately for each part. Additionally, prior to payment, Mario showed me the receipt from the materials purchased, and they also left me with the remaining useable plywood. So overall, I am extremely pleased with the personnel that I interacted with from start to finish, the work which was done, the care which they took with my home, and the cleanliness in which they left it. I feel confident that the water leak is now resolved, and the work done will really help relieve the stress that I would feel during each storm, wondering whether the ceiling would leak or not. I would definitely work with Jim The Handyman again for additional repairs and services, and would highly recommend them to others as well. read more

I found their info on our building's website. The reviews seemed favorable. My experience with them was awful. The estimate was high; charging for the materials 10 times their actual cost. The task was to repair the drywall tape near popcorn ceiling. The estimate came at a murderous $440, of which $50 were materials. Had they done a great job, I would have chalked it up and moved on. Instead, I got a saga of ineptitude, lack of knowledge, and lying to boot. The worker did a terrible job. He took a shortcut, didn't replace the drywall tape but simply covered the old one with mud. Within hours it bubbled and detached from the wall forming air pockets. In the joint between the walls, he removed the old cracked tape but didn't bother to place a new tape over it. When I asked whether he taped that corner, he made an indignant face, and said "yes!" He lied. There are telltale signs that there is no tape in that joint; he just covered it with compound, and not in a good way. Because he failed to secure that joint with drywall tape, it developed a crack within days. Instead of popcorn ceiling repair compound, he slathered mud over the repair area and tried to texture it, badly. (I wish I could attach the photographs to show his "work"). Then he painted over it while it was still wet; as the result, crackles formed all over the repair area. By the time he finished working on it, it looked as if there had been a massive water leak. I called the company, and they were not particularly forthcoming. In fact, as I called them at least 15 times within a several hours after the initial complaint, but they were not picking up the phone. Yet, when I called from a different phone number, the cheerful lady-receptionist promptly answered it. A strange coincidence? I don't think so; l probably screening their call, not willing to deal with me, as I was, clearly, "a difficult customer." The following day, they sent a different worker. Initially, the same worker showed up (the one who did the bang-up job), and he was nearly confrontational. Then the second worker arrived, who seemed more agreeable and willing to fix the problem. A pleasant fellow, he also showed some unfamiliarity with materials pertaining to repairs of textured ceilings. He reworked the area, and even textured it using a popcorn ceiling spray which I provided to him. He was honest and was willing to work out a solution. When he finished, it looked adequate (not great, but adequate). Finally, he honestly acknowledged that the first worker "made a few mistakes." read more

I've used JTH more than once, starting in 2017 and most recently in 2018. This company has so many great reviews, and you can sample each and get the idea, but also wanted to add my own. Many kudos to Roz, who as someone else mentioned "is a no-nonsense lady with a sense of humor and an uncanny ability to work with you." She's also a great project manager, and never loses track of you and her word is her bond. The technicians who come out to do the job, have impressed me. Carlos is really great, he is true craftsman and started with repairing some wood rot in my lower sills (in 2017), and also caulked around gaps in my outer surfaces and electric meter, etc. Super job. But most important, last summer, around August of 2018, I had problems with upper soffits on my TH, and squirrel infestation within attic. JTH came out, proposed solution, and did initial installation. However, this first solution did not work. Squirrel broke through, gnawed through solution, and so I went back to JTH. And here is where any service is tested: After we reviewed other options, stronger and more proven steel grates for installation (also higher cost than initial option, but no contest for proven performance)-- JTH/ Igor and his team came back out, and did complete reinstallation as needed. Mission accomplished, no further problems, no squirrels! Oh, and did I mention they didn't charge me for either reinstall OR increased cost of new option? That's what makes this company great. Some jobs easier than others, but when you want confidence in final solution and want a company that will stick with you -- call JTH. We were very pleased with the work performed by this company and would definitely use them again. We had two jobs that required two different skilled workers. Jose, doing carpentry, did a great job building and installing a custom fireplace mantle. I wanted something very modern and minimalist that I couldn't find in the store. He was able to do exactly what I was after when he saw the photo examples I had. He checked in with me at each stage to make sure we were always on the right track or to ask if I preferred it one way or the other (there were some design elements that came up as the project progressed). I appreciated his attention to detail and that he worked methodically and cleanly, without rushing the work, to get it right. Neal, their door expert, installed a new front door for us. He also was careful, thorough and helpfully answered any questions we had. The previous door had been installed, badly, just after we moved in 10 years ago. We were anxious to ensure this door would be a better fit, secure, and draught free. He did a great job and it's been such an improvement in functionality and design. From getting the free estimate, to scheduling the work (and having to make a couple of changes), to coming out before the job started to review material and answer some questions, Jim the Handyman was a pleasure to work with. I almost never write reviews of any sort, so this is a special exception, since I want to give credit where credit truly is due. Over the past couple of months, I've called on Jim the Handyman for at least four different jobs, done by three different handymen. The jobs included flooring work, kitchen and bathroom recaulking, deck board replacement and garage-related carpentry and painting. In each instance, an experienced and knowledgeable estimator came out and prepared a detailed upfront estimate of what the work would involve and what it would cost (barring any changes, of course), which struck me as reasonable for each of the jobs based on the work involved. Equally important, in each instance the various handymen assigned to perform the work did so competently and efficiently. I would be happy to see any of them show up again on future jobs. I do want to specifically recognize Brian, though, since from my perspective he did the two more-complex jobs. He did each of them with the fine touch of a practiced master, and he took time to educate me (a near-total novice when it comes to home maintenance but eager to learn) by explaining what he was doing and why he was doing it the way he was doing it. In short, my experience with Jim the Handyman has pleasantly surprised and impressed me, as a result of which I look forward to using their services again in the future. read more

After searching for several days and contacting more than a few large companies for estimates (Who charged equally large amounts for minor work), I finally found Jim the Handyman. I needed some drywall repair work done to a wall and some caulking done to two tubs and a standing shower. When I first called this morning, to my dismay I found that they were booked solid until after my move date. However, the representative kindly added my name to the waiting list and they were able to come out at 2 this afternoon. Luke arrived at my house and gave me a very reasonably priced invoice that, unlike other companies that charge by the hour, was less than half of what I would have paid with a larger firm. Luke even patched up some minor holes around the house free of charge. This company does very high quality work at an extremely reasonable price, and I will be happily recommending this company to all my friends and neighbors before I leave. Last Saturday morning (28 April 2018), Mr. Mario (Fajardo) and Oscar assembled, positioned and anchored a portable greenhouse for us, in the outside patio area off our kitchen and dining room, at our Kings Park home in Springfield, VA. This was an OUTSUNNY brand 8' (L) x 6' (W) x 7' (H) greenhouse, which came in what seemed like 800 parts and pieces! Mario and Oscar finished the task in less than three hours! I contacted Jim the Handyman to fix a small section of vinyl siding that became loose after there were high winds in my neighborhood a few days ago. After I sent them an email explaining what I needed they responded within an hour with a very reasonable estimate for the work. After an exchange of a few more emails they scheduled the work for later in the week. I received a confirmation call the day before the work was scheduled. Mario, the technician, arrived exactly at the agreed upon time. He explained how he would perform the repair, and he was extremely professional and courteous. After he completed the work he reviewed what was done to repair the siding. I was very pleased with the quality of the repair work, and the excellent customer service provided by Mario. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to my neighbors. I plan to use Jim the Handyman to fix several other things in my house that need professional attention including re-screening my back porch and replacing a section of rotted wood. read more

Hi All - Just wanted to pass along a review of Jim the Handyman's service and the awesome work done by Mario! It was during a relatively warm snap this winter when Luke from Jim the Handyman came by to quote some work. Specifically we needed a piece of siding repaired, a house power washing, cedar staining and sealing and window washing. Luke came back with a modular estimate and we decided to focus on the siding repair and the washing. Mario came by today and unfortunately the mild break we had came to a close. Nevertheless Mario proceeded on and repaired our siding quickly and completed the washing, despite the cold weather. He was a real champ, knowledgeable, polite and extremely professional. I would like to thank Jim The Handyman and specifically Hector my service man for the project completed in my bathroom. Hector removed a large old broken medicine cabinet for me and did a perfect drywall patch, very smooth and all ready to paint. He also spot grouted and rechaulked my old shower/tub. Hector was punctual, very courteous and nice and very neat with the work/clean-up. I love that Jim The Handyman can do any project for your home. I am so relieved that this is done. We hired Jim the Handyman to do some drywall work and to remove an old florescent bathroom light with a light fixture we bought from Home Depot. From the start, the gentleman who came over to estimate the cost and take pictures, was courteous and knowledgeable. Francisco showed up on time, was polite and professional, and, most importantly, did an outstanding job. Even when he was about to finalize the light installation, and I asked if the light could be moved over to be more centered, he handled that so well. It meant extra time, cutting into the drywall and extending the wiring, but he was able to tell me what the extra work and cost would be. Totally worth it! We just had our second job with this company and couldn't be happier. The first one was last year when our ceiling turned to mush due to a rusty dryer vent that was literally leaking water every time we ran the dryer. From the estimate, to price to work completed the whole process was smooth and job done rapidly. Job #2, this past week we were finalizing a refi and had to get a couple of home repairs. I had 3 days from being told about them by the bank and the reinspection. I called the office thinking they would not be able to fit me in but explained my situation. They had an estimator out the next day and schedule the job to get done within 24 hours. We passed the inspection with flying colors. Kelly, current one of the two co-owners, worked for the firm for many years before buying the business and is personally supurb at diagnosing the underlying issue which needs to be fixed and then making the necessary repairs the first time. Most recently, Brian Lortie from Jim the Handyman assisted us in assembling six sets of disassembled metal shelving which we had purchased from Crate and Barrel. Brian did an excellent job of assembling the shelving kits, ensuring that the legs were adjusted so the shelving was stable on the storage room floor, and positioning the shelving within the storage room. DO NOT GO WITH THIS RIP-OFF OLD MAN!!! He totally took advantage that I was a female and was moving and needed things done fast. He over charged me even when I presented the coupon. They don't give quotes over the phone because he's a cheat and when he shows up you have no choice but to find out the quotes and corners you to have him do the work and charges you 120 bucks for a messy job that was supposed to be a 15 dollar one. He did my work in the summer and was waiting to make time to write a review on this fella. DO NOT GO TO HIM. He only cares about the money. We had Issac come and retile our 1965 shower. He also regrouted all of the bathroom tiles to make the bathroom look fresh and clean. He was meticulous, professional, punctual and had a depth of knowledge beyond tiling. He is a plumber of many years - he took the time to answer my many plumbing questions. He also let me know ahead of time the possible problems he might encounter when removing the old tiles. He explained the project completely prior to starting the job. I will use Issac and Jim the Handyman for the many other home projects in my 1965 home. Joe, the project evaluator, was also knowledgeable, personable, punctual and patient.
