One month ago, I stopped in for lunch, I had a real craving for a baked potato. I stood in line for over 20 minutes - the lines move slow when you want a baked potato in this restaurant. I got to the counter, knowing full well I'd be late back to work due to the slow service at this particular location, placed my order for a delicious baked potato only to be met with "we don't have any spuds" I felt a stronger connection to my Irish kinfolk that day. I changed my order for a bowl of potato soup. The soup was a typical mediocre bowl of potato soup with maybe 4 actual pieces of potato in a creamy sauce. Boring. Approximately four weeks after this visit, my entire family decided they wanted to go to McAlister's - the same location nonetheless. I thought to myself "self, surely they have potatoes now!" (Foreshadowing). We arrived and, dreaming of delicious baked potatoes, we all each ordered a meal with a half spud. I had the honor of paying the large sum and I even left a generous tip because I was so excited that they had baked potatoes (they call them spuds). I usually don't tip for counter service - but I was just so excited. Finally, the Irish curse was broken. We Will Have Potatoes! We got our gigantic, flimsy tea cups and made our way to our table. Many minutes later. 8 or 9 minutes? A person came over to announce "we don't have spuds. You need to reorder." Suddenly it was the 19th century all over again. The entire family decided to migrate to another restaurant next door. I asked for a refund. The employee left then came back and said "they are going to refund your money and give you the food even still" Oh my. Decision time. Free food that we don't really want or go next door. I voted to leave. My ancestors have been through this before. Not again I said! I got out voted. We spent the next 10 minutes deciding and working to re-order all the food again. The food came. It was ok. Perhaps I was jaded because of the whole potato (um...spuds) thing. The next day I checked my card account online. They didn't refund the meal. We ended up paying for food we didn't really want. We should have gone to the place next door. To be fair, the folks were nice and pleasant. The store was clean and well organized. One last thing: Don't get the cookies. Not worth the cost. Save the money and the calories and find something better at the Bundt cake store! So long McAlister's, I must honor the ancestors and bid you farewell. I'll be getting my baked potatoes elsewhere- maybe that new giant Kroger has a good deal on potatoes....i mean spuds. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on the spuds.

When we arrived we saw the tables outside, it was kinda windy and chilly so we hoped there were tables inside. There weren't but the stars are for Vanessa Galan! She promptly greeted us and told us about the establishment. I was looking around, taking pictures and she handed me a menu. I saw they had a location in Mt. Washington! She told me they were a larger location with tables indoors, and more of the experience we wanted for lunch. She did recommend the chili and pulled pork. I will say that this location has brisket (which I was strongly considering) and MW does not. But Vanessa was explaining that her brother and sister in law (Kim - she's awesome!) own them. Love supporting local, family owned so we headed to Mt. Washington. Also she explained that she makes the marinades and applies them to the marinated meats herself. Thanks Vanessa! I'll be back one day for brisket!!!

I waited 3-4 mins and was handed the food. It was $9.45 after tax for the sandwich. I ate it out in the truck and wish I could have said it was 5 out of 5 best ever but I can't. The sandwich was small and not that tasty unfortunately for the price especially. It had no Smokey flavor and just tasted like pulled beef roast on a roll with bbq sauce. I did not enjoy and was really wanting to like it. I'll give it another shot with another food item but I'll pass on this sandwich

It's really easy to shrug off a deli/sandwich shop by saying, "It's just sandwiches, nothing special about that" like some reviews I've seen. I think those reviews miss the entire point of the neighborhood deli. I've been two days in a row this week. Once for myself, then again for my family after they heard me rave about the sandwiches and people here. Farrah (sp?) greeted me both days with a, "Hi honey! Be right with you!". You don't get a greeting like that very much anymore, and that same care and effort she put into greeting her customers is evident in the construction of the sandwiches too! I mean when was the last time a business - even local - asked your name before you left, unless it was to put on your coffee cup? We've had the club, the Brooklyn, and the veggie caprese and all of them are phenomenal. I don't think you could make a bad choice at The Block - you're gonna be happy and satisfied. Maybe it is "just a sandwich", and maybe I'm overhyping it because of the way the love they have for the customers and product comes through the entire experience....but even if I am, isn't that the entire point of your neighborhood deli?

The Block serves fresh salads, sandwiches, pasta salads, and soups from 11: 00 AM - 3: 00 PM. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a lady (I'm sorry, I have forgotten her name). She shared with us that they have been catering and operating the deli for 8 years and that everything is made after ordering, nothing is pre-made or packaged. She was very patient with us as we decided which of the tantalizing offerings we were going to choose. The inside was pretty small with a couple of 2-seater tables. Bagged chips and a cooler with variety of canned and bottled beverages are available in the space for purchase. We ordered our food to go. I chose the Chopped Chef Salad. Readers, this salad was HUGE (the take-out container could barely close). It was loaded with greens, turkey, ham, red onions, cucumber, boiled eggs, tomato, and both Swiss and cheddar cheeses. I was thrilled to discover that they use only Boar Head cheeses, my favorite brand). Everything in the salad was fresh and delicious and the homemade ranch dressing was heavenly. How did it take so long for us to find them? I am so glad that have found them and that they are located close to our home, because I can foresee this being a frequent lunch spot!

You order at the counter, pay for your order, get your drink at the beverage area and have a seat. They will then bring your order to your table. We both opted for the pick two combo. I had a half ruben sandwich and a bowl of white chili. Both were excellent. A huge half sandwich and a large hearty bowl of white chili. The chili was flavorful but not spicy. It had lots of shredded chicken, beans and corn (which could have been left out in my opinion). My friend had the chicken salad sandwich and the white chili and said her sandwich was good, also a very large. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, parking on the side and in the back of the building. I had not been for years but it was a good choice for a late lunch.
