Jim's. I get a warm feeling when I think about this place because they really seem like part of the neighborhood. This one in particular has a great head server who seems to keep the place right on track. Over the last few months I noticed that they kept changing up the decorations with each holiday. Part of the reason we kept going there was because we had this bogo meal offer, but we kept forgetting to use the coupon! Pretty sneaky plan there Jim's. My grandmother would call this a "greasy spoon". I would call it good eats when you're hung over. If you go on a Saturday or Sunday, expect to wait a couple of minutes. We love Jim's!!!! Great service, value for money, food is good. We dined at an upscale expensive restaurant downtown last night, and I would rather have gone to Jim's. It was our first time going in there today. No particular reason. It was close by and we wanted something quick. It was 4-5pm ish when we were there. Food arrived quickly and was great. "Ok" Food. It was good, but not incredible. I got the Chicken Parm. It came on a bed of Fettuccine which was good but the chicken itself had no flavor. Just meat sauce poured on it... so even if it DID have flavor ( which it did not), you wouldn't be able to taste it, as the meat sauce is very over powering. I had the Tortilla soup, which was good! Went for breakfast and enjoyed sausage breakfast tacos with the hash browns and refried beans. Kids had silver dollar pancakes from kids menu. Husband and I also split a short stack of regular pancakes. The portions were generous and the food yummy, although I wish there had been more cheese in my tacos. I've been coming here for ten years....not sure why the quality and service has gone into the toilet.....especially after such a lovely remodel on the space. Either way, we went here for breakfast today and were extremely disappointed. I ordered the same thing that I have for years....food came out completely wrong. My husband asked them to remake my food....it came back out and looked right this time. I took two bites and was repulsed by the burnt bacon in my tacos that tasted like it had been cooked in ten day old grease. My brother sat without water for over ten minutes. When my husband approached the manager, John, to take the terrible food off the bill (I didn't eat it, why would you want me to pay for it?) he was met with resistance and attitude. The whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth (literally and metaphorically speaking). Sadly, I will no longer recommend this place, nor will I be giving my business to them in the future. There's plenty of other options for dining out here in Austin! read more

I had the liver with mashed potatoes and green beans. The food took a while to arrive and was warm, not hot, when it did. The liver was okay. The mashed potatoes had chunks of unmashed potatoes in them - it wasn't bad but I couldn't figure out whether that was their signature thing or whether someone was just really lazy when mashing them. The green beans were watery and had no taste whatsoever. It's one things to serve canned green beans, but surely there must be a brand that does better than this? Last but not least, the AC was turned too cold, and I couldn't wait to get my check and get out of there as fast as possible. I might go there again some time when everything else is closed, but certainly not when there are any alternatives. read more

Good restaurant overall. I usually get the breakfast tacos...bacon, egg, and tater. The tacos are served with a small container (about two tablespoons) of a reddish colored sauce. I've never asked the waitresses what that stuff is, but I assume it's Jim's own blend of hot sauce. It's got a strange taste....that was the one and only time I tasted it. It looks the same every time they bring it to the table, but neither me nor my buddies put the hot sauce on our tacos. They are pretty good with a little salt and pepper. I usually add some Tabasco or collhua sauce to spice it up. Once in a while I use the ketchup. A few weeks ago, my wife and I shared a western omelet with hash browns....good eatin' there. My daughter didn't finish her pancakes so I ate a few bits of that. Pancakes are very good...not sure if they have their own brand of pancake mix, but whatever they are using, they should continue using it. I've been going to the Jim's in Oak Hill for about the past then to fifteen years on Saturday mornings for a prayer meeting. Most of the waitresses that were there when I started eating there are still working there. They are all good waitresses. Place gets a little noisy around 8:30 on Saturday morings so go somewhere else if you want a quiet breakfast. Good mixture of South Austin folks on Saturday morings....older geezers like me are there about 7:00ish. Then the middle age geezers get there about 8:00a.m. Some bring there grand kids. There's usually some interesting cars in the parking lot. I think there's a group of guys who like and have old jalopies that like to meet there for breakfast on Saturdays. Good place to eat breakfast, lunch or supper in South Austin....makes me wonder why Jim's restaurant was never featured on King of the Hill. Maybe it was and I just missed it.....maybe some film maker will read this review and make Jim's famous. I'm reading the reviews and wondering, "did i eat at the same place?" My first concern was whether it was clean. I felt compelled to wipe down the table and utensils. A business seemingly designed for a weary traveler coming through 290, Jim's is a 24 hour joint, with meals made quick and easy and to the appeal of many. You walk in through double doors and are greeted by a nice hostess then escorted to your table or booth. Even after the restorations Jim's embodies an old time cafe with modern touches. The sweet tea is good and pairs well with any of the steak or burger options. But this morning I was on a mission. Texas two-step breakfast? I think yes. Two eggs your way with hash browns and bacon. I was hoping for a bit more based on the reviews, but it seemed much like a Denny's. Clearly very popular as a local breakfast spot and the wait appeared long but was pretty quick. The portions are huge. My eggs benedict was just okay (I've figured out I should stick to omelets at diners instead). The portions were insane. There must have been half a pound of ham on my bene! The kids' pancake plates seem sized for the future LT football team- my kids each got about 5 pancakes 4-in across with two big pieces of bacon. The fruit cups came with strawberries that were a little past their prime. The staff was very friendly. They don't have chocolate chip pancakes but will draw smiles in chocolate syrup for the kids' plates. read more

I have had the opportunity to eat here a few times and the food is always good. The prices are more than reasonable and service is usually hit or miss. I ate this morning and all of the above was accurate and service was pretty good. However, the hostess who was seating parties would receive a negative five stars if I could give it and not impact the other aspects of the review. I arrive about 1045 and they were busy. I added my name to the wait list - party of one and took my place on the bench. I soon notice that parties who arrived after me were being seated. Since they were larger parties, I didn't get too irritated. However, the hostess started seating parties of two who arrived after me. After about three sets of two, I was offered a seat at the bar which I declined. This I guess was a mistake, as I appeared to be placed in a time out box. After about four more parties of two and me getting visibly agitated, the hostess said I would be getting seated soon. I won't be back. We ate here this past Friday evening and it was not cool by any means. My husband ordered catfish with a baked potato, which is pretty normal, or so I thought. There was an "upcharge" for this special spud, but when it arrived, it was nothing more than a bowl of mashed potatoes floating in margarine & sour cream. A real heart attack special! The waitress told us that they ran out of baked potatoes, so they just substituted it for mashed. Huh? Mr. Catfish was a frozen, piece of sh*t that they deep fried in a vat of lard and then my breakfast consisted of two rubbery eggs, three strips of cold, shriveled-up bacon and a short stack of pancakes. The pancakes were good, so that is all I ate. The waitress was friendly, actually a bit OVERLY friendly with my husband, even calling him "honey" over & over again. I don't really mind that, I guess. I figured that's what diner waitresses call men, like Flo from that 1970's show "Alice." Overall, if you are in need of some good hangover, greasy spoon diner breakfast, I suppose you can't go wrong, but I would much rather eat breakfast at Dan's. If I were to do it over again, I would simply stick to breakfast fare. Lunch & dinner orders aren't done right. Oh, by the way, when we got the bill, the "honey" waitress didn't remove the extra charge for the baked potato we never got. I asked the cashier to remove it, which she did with no issues.
