Yesterday afternoon, my boyfriend and I had an unpleasant experience at dinner. I don't live in Austin because I have a business out of town, and he has his business in Austin. When I visit my boyfriend, I like to go to Luby's for dinner; it's one of the best restaurants. They have good food and excellent service, starting with the staff. My boyfriend has been going to Luby's for 40 years and usually goes five days a week. He's not an occasional customer; he's a regular. The waitresses treat him very well; there are no complaints about that. But yesterday, we were about to start eating when the cashier came to our table and, in a loud and rude voice, said, "If you want coffee, you have to give me your credit card to charge it." Mike and I looked at each other, both surprised by her bad behavior. We told her no, we didn't want coffee. After she left, she left a bitter taste in our mouths and we didn't want to eat anymore. Always welcome finding a lubys. They've had ups and downs the last few years but today,in Austin,they were up. I was greeted by a classic rock track playing Moody Blues overhead. Nice start. This place is cavernous and has a long well stocked food line to go with it. I found pretty much typical lubbys fare on display. Always quite a spread for a cafeteria. They have a smaller serving called a LuAnn platter. It's a reduced entree portion with two sides and bread. Always a bargain and more than enough. Today I got the 1/4 fried chicken white. It consisted of a perfectly fried breast wing piece. I added mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. When I ask for the diner roll the server ask,butter on it? As he reached for a brush in a clarified dish of butter,I let Out and enthusiastic," Yes please". And he brushed on a beautiful glaze of butter. Add ice tea for a sweltering Austin day refresh and you have a winner. These cafeterias are disappearing just as we need the value most. I recommend as soon as possible you... Go! read more

My wife had a craving for Luby's on Sunday so we came here for lunch and really enjoyed our time here. You cannot go wrong with their fish and mac & cheese and that's exactly what she ordered. For her bread she ordered the yeast roll and man that was outstanding! I can believe we have been sleeping on these for so long. I was glad to see a plethora of sides I could order as a vegetarian and really enjoyed the mashed potatoes, rice, baked potato and cornbread. Their desserts were great and the service was impeccable, we will definitely be back. read more

This type of cafeteria is a dying Texas tradition. One of the few places that offers liver & onions. Affordable, straight forward meals. The fried fish is legendary (they even sell it in grocery stores now) and the mac&cheese is like crack cocaine to a monkey. Unlimited iced tea drink refills and a dangerous selection of cakes and pies. The chicken fried chicken is divine as is the Salisbury Steak. Salads, corn bread, pudding and even giant pickles! All cafe buffet styled. A Texas mainstay that is worth visiting at least once a month. read more

My annual thanksgiving meal at Luby's to enjoy Turkey and Stuffing LuAnn Platter. They are extremely consistent in their cooking and love their food. Once again the turkey was tasty and the stuffing delightful. In the past year have dined here several times and recommend the square fried fish and fried chicken. I noticed the pork chops and will give it a try on my next visit. The service and atmosphere is always excellent, and the cafeteria is always perfectly clean. Not much to complain about since this is really a bang for your buck type meal! You get what you see and pay fore. I grew up eating southern food in cafeteria Styled restaurants just like Luby's and it really brought me nostalgia and comfort. For a first timer here, it's a lot to take in. I wish the food bar had more labels cause there were none. The food on the hot bar looks fresh and hot lol. My partner and I Were interested in many things but settled for a steak and fried chicken. Sides looked delicious as well but we weren't going to grab everything as we knew we weren't going to finish it all. I got a buttered corn side and cabbage side plus a wheat roll with my entree. And my Husband grabbed mac and cheese and cornbread for his steak. Most items were rather on the salty side but that's okay. The dining area was clean, has high chairs, and very nice patrons who kept my daughter entertained while we ate, Our total was $19 for food items which you pay before sitting down and we left a cash tip after our meal! Diving deep into my dining past; cafeterias and where are they now? Probably not breaking news but they held a kind place in my heart. In Texas you had the battle of Wyatt's, Luby's, and Furr's. Here's my personal history on these dining establishments. Wyatt's had a location in Westgate Mall (South Austin) back in the day. Don't have a lot of memories except I knew butter cost a nickel and I was scolded for getting mashed taters and macaroni and cheese (double starch). At this point I'm less than 10 years old. Teenage years Wyatt's was long gone so here comes Furr's Cafeteria on South Lamar. This starts my love affair with rectangular fish and chopped steak with mushrooms. Even reviewed this location on Yelp circa 2009. Lot of good memories dining here. Even did a college paper comparing Furr's and Luby's. So, only Luby's is left and hanging on by a thread. Only 42 restaurants remain open in 2022. I've dined at this location twice in the past year. Still eating the fried fish with tartar sauce and mashed taters with brown gravy. Cabbage and zucchini/squash were also good sides. Only thing I wasn't in love with was the bland jalapeno cornbread. Took mom on the last visit we spent the lunch reminiscing about old memories and dishes long forgotten. Go visit Luby's soon before this Texas gem vanishes permanently. read more

Luby's...well...it's for a particular crowd. It's got homey vibes with an older clientele. I got the blackened tilapia and my daughter got the pork chop. It comes with 2 sides and bread, I think? No one really explained how it worked and since we were new customers, we just went with the flow. My kid wanted a dessert, but the plastic boxes were too hard to peruse with a line behind us. The price was fine for what we got, but with a run down atmosphere and buffet style table service, I don't know if it was all worth it. I'll be frank. This is the type of place you end up at when you're hangry, not close enough to something you really want, nor can everyone decide on what they want. It's a place holder. But, I must say the older crowd seemed to love it. They sat around like it was their dining room. Fish was cooked well, but the sadly pork chop was dry. The sides were fine, nothing notable. The fried chicken tenders were good with hot sauce but that's true for most things. The corn was buttery and delicious, the cornbread was pretty good too and the sliced potatoes with onions were good as well. Unfortunately the carrot cake and turkey gravy weren't good enough to finish. All in all the food here really does remind me of a cafeteria which I suppose makes sense given the style of the restaurant. My server wasn't what I'd call attentive though she was nice. Basically, eat here if you have to but there's probably something better nearby. read more

For me, Lubys is sooooo nostalgia. I grew up eating at least once a month at a Lubys with the family. I was so sad to hear some of their locations were closing. But not all! Found one in Austin at Slaughter Lane.... I have to say.. I do still love the casual, see your food, get your food and eat your food quick happy concept. You can typically eat for about 20ish per person. Great for all ages. Yep, I am a fan. No, it's not 5 star gourmet dining, and thole food is more the staples... but is it supposed to be gorumet.. is it supposed to fancy? Really???? Nope. It's about family time and very casual food. I ordered delivery and apparently they were out of what I ordered. I had marked to contact me if something was unavailable. They did not. But they delivered everything else I ordered except the main meal which was the turkey combo. So what good are the sides and veggies and rolls without the main meal. I called and the manager was difficult to understand and basically could do nothing. He said if I came in they'd give me a free meal. That does not help when I ordered takeout because I am handicapped. The delivery service did give me a refund but the store itself was not helpful. read more

A great memory of Luby's that I hope is available for years for all those who grew up eating in cafeterias like Luby's, Piccadilly, Furr's, Wyatt's and Morrisons along with the many other mom and pop cafeterias that were and still are mainstays in their communities with generational customers. The Luby's on W Slaughter at the time of these photos was at the top of their game and I always enjoying dining there every opportunity I could. There's something for everyone which is why Luby's has been a choice for families in Texas for many decades. read more

I ordered on the TOGO side of the restaurant. I was so excited to eat at Luby's to get back to work and find cold broccoli the size of my hand! Cold cheese steak, and a wilted brown tossed salad. $15.78 for cold food, did not seem fresh. I am very disappointed in Luby's. read more

Typical Luby's as far as food goes, but seems to be fairly new. Went for lunch on a weekday and they were very busy. I was surprised to run across this one since Luby's had to close most of their locations and only a handful remain. Probably a 3.5 to 4 as far as cafeterias go. read more

When I was growing up, my family would frequently make the 40 min trip to my grandmother's house and we would all go out to Luby's (in Houston, not Austin)... The decor is a little more updated, the menu seems to have a bit fewer selections, but the experience is 100% authentic, some (cough cough) 45 years later. The food is actually pretty good considering it's sitting out on the serving line under hotlamps (lots and lots of hotlamps). It's your traditional cattle car kind of service, line up, grab a tray and make your way through the serving line - (think school cafeteria with better food). The prices seem ok to me, the portions were fine and for the first time I saw (real brewed) Ice Tea on tap. How cool is that. They don't have one out near where I live, which is ok, going there once every 10 years or so gives me all the nostalgia fix I need these days. Grandma would feel right at home here. read more

where to begin? well i wrote a seven (7) paragraph review on this; but, lost in the the "metasphere." basically, my son and i stopped by and were surprised luby's was offering/serving brisket, sausage, chicken with all the trimings and it was damned good. hadn't stopped into luby's in a "minute." we were damned surprised when we say brisket, sausage and chicken as among the offerings. what can i say, the brisket/sausage plate with two sides ii opted for cabbage and green berans; my son chose mack&cheeze and pinto beans. a roll, came with the entree. i had a coke, son had unsweetened tea. now for the verdict: the price was right: tw0 (2) brisket/sausage plates, drinks and tow deserts for $40.98 (try doing that at franklin's, smitty's or kreitz (lockhart) and see how much that gets you.). and you don/t have to wait in line for two to four hours (franklin's, austin, tx). we strolled in; business was brike. my son and i were greeted by the wonderful staff. because were were taken aback by the bbq; we decided to forego out usual steak and paoato fare; and, instead selected the bbq. carlos the assistant manager, explained to us the bbq was offered as iether one, two or three meat plantes. we selected a two plate fare: brisket/beef sausage. the smoked bbq was out of this world. i found it faultless, no complaints at all. mys on, roverto, would have prefereed the meats hust a litlle hotter (temperature), i thought room temp was just fine. we missed the stuffed jalipenos at check out; but, we compensated by getting extra olive sticks. i could have gotten out of there have saved and extra 20%; but, did not knowhow to access the online coupon. the lady at the register tried to download the coupon of of my phone; but, the coupon gods were angry that day we paid full price, $40.98 (fourty dollars, and 98/100s, u.s.) and tht was still was a bargain. the brisket/beef suasage servings were generous to a fualt. i give luby's ne bbq fare and enthusiasic thumbs up. tiped the server and personally thanked carlos, the assistant manager; sharp cat, only to eager to assist.. we were pleasantly surprised when the assistant manager, carlos, stolled up to our table and asked us what we thought of the bbq plates. i said, "man, you guys are doing it right; buth then, agin, thuis si lubys, it's always right. we did point out a very few and mnor issues. my son thogh the meat was not "warm enough." i thoght it was jsut right; i enjoy brisken/beef sausage at room temp, just so long they are properly and thoroughly smoked;and they were to smoked to perfection. my son and i both agreed: jsut a tad bit too much marble (fat) on the brisket; but that is something easily remedied, tell the home office that the brisket heads need to be trimmed just a little bit closer, before, fefore, not after; but before they are cast intothat majik smoker. carlos agreed. we both left lubys's that saturday afternoon super impressed ans luby's bbq is ever bit as good as any we've had anywhere in central texas (including luling and yes even lockhart, tx). for sure we'll be back again, because, instead of spending easily $75, eighty dollars at smitty's/krietz, we got away like bandits and spent only $40.98 at luby's and the meats were just as good if not better thanks lubys. you're bbq was out of this world (move over franklin, there's a new,, central texas style bbq, joint in town. and the prices are right, right, right. we'll be back to visit carlos , the assistant manager and crew. oh forgot to mention, before i tipped our server, she offered a fresh, piping hot coffee, to go along with our cheese cakes; and man, that cheese cake refused to take a back seat to the brisket/beef sausage. gentle readers: when was the last time you stopped into lubys for down-home, country style cooking (now serving great bbq plates)? well that's too, too long. do yourselves a favor. save on gasoling ($3.38 9/10ths a gallon) and the two to four hour wait at franklins; and, go to luby's instead. you and your wallet, will be very glad you did. and say hello!, to carlos, the assistant manager (deserves a promotion to manager: because, he truly cares about his patrons and helps them feel right at home. the food servers/facilitators also rock the house; they keep your drinks topped, coffee hot and condiments as you prefer. great, great, great joe carlos, assistant manager and crew. thank you for always making us feel welcomed; and thanks for the complimentary coffe (tipped the food server $5.00 dollars as she well earned it. we'll more definetely be back for more bbq fare; next time i'll do the tree meat plate (brisket/beef sausage/chicken). over and out, aprovfcho, disfrute su comida. coa from the "east-side." cao carlos oviedo, atty&counselor@law, austin, tx. read more

They forgot every single condiment/sauce and side for every meal. No gravy for mashed potatoes, no gravy for chicken fried steak, no tartar sauce for fried fish, no white roll, no cornbread. Literally would not pay money for those items WITHOUT those things so it was a completely wasted order/meal. read more

I like Lubys. I have eaten there for years. I think it is very good for what it is. Pretty good food at a good price. If anyone is judging it as a 5 star restaurant then don't go. I like it because it is quick, good and affordable. I had meatloaf , broccoli rice and spinach. Very good and we were in and out in 35min. After the Luby's on Brodie closed, this became our closest Luby's. Wow, what a gem hiding in plain sight! I don't know if it was because it was a Sunday afternoon or if this location is always so busy but it was packed. And not just with old people. The inside is probably the nicest Luby's interior I've ever seen and the food was fresh and delicious. I was feeling adventurous so I had the baked white fish and it did not disappoint. Throw in some black eyed peas, mashed potatoes with gravy, a yeast roll, and a slice of chess pie and I had lunch + dinner for 2 more nights. We went with my entire family so everyone from ages 1-62 and we all left happy- not an easy feat. A solid, reliable, home cooked meal- exactly what you want from a good Luby's. read more

The potatoes are cold every time. The people don't stir them before serving and scrape off the cold top to give you. I only go there to get liver since my doc recommends it once a month. It is always cold and I have them put it back on the grill to warm it up. My friend always gets the fried fish but it smelled rotten and was dried out he was scared to eat it. He also got pinto beans that were hard and needed to be cooked Much longer. Corn was cold but our chickens really enjoyed the meal. I have spoken with the manager in the past about getting employees to stir the food so it is warm when you get it but nothing has changed. read more

Ordered ala carte Thanksgiving dinner for 12 at a cost of over $200. We ordered 7 pounds of the roasted sliced turkey breast. What we got was wet, pressed, poor grade lunchmeat. Tried to call Lubys and no one is answering. Our extended family is here. This is not what was advertised and the Lubys marketing team should rethink the pics in their online advertising..
