Noah was our waiter, good guy. he had a humor a can agree with, and made jokes to lighten our mood. when he came with our food we presented us with a meme from TikTok that I was fond of, 'When You Think Your Waiter Is Coming With Your Food' and it brought a generous amount of laughter to the table. Also, Aside from having an !AWSOME! waiter the food we got was also delicious. As well as the Oreo milkshake I got for dessert, when being given the milkshake I was told about 'How the fight happened with it,' and how Noah couldn't make a milkshake by himself now. I am very disappointed in this restaurant chain. I ordered through Grub Hub and I ended up getting the complete wrong order. This restaurant used to be my favorite, but the quality of service have changed that. I called grub hub to see what the issue was and they said I had to speak with the restaurant staff. I got in contact with the restaurant manager and I explained what happened. He simply said "what do you want me to do about it". I would think the manager would be a bit more professional. He could have at least corrected our order and let us pick it up from the restaurant. He did not care whatsoever. Needless to say, I had to be refunded through Grub Hub. Whew!  It is very infrequent that I am blown away by a restaurant, but alas here we are.  Living the dream.  At Jim's nonetheless! I've driven by here all the time but something about the outside gave me a meh vibe.  I was actually heading to nearby Sherwin-Williams paint this morning and thought they opened at nine, but they open at 10 AM. With an hour to kill, I pulled into the Jim's parking lot for breakfast. As I'm getting out of my truck, a homeless man, who introduces himself as Lawrence, asks me for $10.  I decline but tell him if he'll come and sit down with me, I'll buy him breakfast. He agrees, so I get another mask out of my truck and we go inside. We are greeted by the nicest hostess and then we sit down at a booth and the sweetest lady named Barbara starts helping us. I had an omelette, which was delicious.  Lawrence orders bowl after bowl after bowl of runny, steaming white grits.  Whatever, this nice man is hungry, I'll feed him until he's full.   Lawrence and I just sat there joking for about 45 minutes, I really enjoyed getting to know him. As we are finishing up, the waitress comes by and asks if we would like any dessert. After going at it for almost an hour together, stuffing ourselves, I didn't think there was room for anything else to fit. But something inside me spoke up. I tell her "I'm not familiar with your menu, so just bring me a piece of whatever you think Lawrence and I would enjoy, please." Barbara shows up with the most delectable looking piece of Chocolate Cream Pie.  Quelle surprise!  We both gasped with delight. This was exactly the coup de grâce we needed to finish our marathon eating session. It was clear that we both wanted this entire creampie, neither of us wanting to share it with the other.  Finally, we agree to do our best to share, despite both wanting all of this surprise confectionary wonder for ourselves. So there we were, just like 2 old friends, eyes locked in a stare, enjoying this unexpected cream pie together.  Both scooping it into our Pavlovian mouths as fast as we can, not wanting to waste even a dollop of this delicacy. An outsider looking at us from the outside window would have immediately thought he was the man standing outside the diner in Edward Hopper's Nighthawks painting.   Barbara, thank you for helping us, we enjoyed our visit to Jim's. Great service! Old school waitstaff and feel. Always attentive. The food, however, is extremely bland and institutional. Despite the awful "waiting-room flavor" coffee, Breakfast is your best bet, but anything adventurous with a flavor profile like "Italian" (AKA spaghetti) is supremely airliner-ish. Burgers and Sandwich fair would be 1000% better without the institutional Ben-E-Kieth products. If you have ever eaten at a massive "Food Hall" cafeteria, this is pretty much the same deal. I've been going to Jim's in Oak Hill for breakfast since the early 1990s, when you might see the legendary UT coach Darrell Royal and his wife having breakfast with friends. The food and service always were exceptional. Since COVID, however, they seem to have had problems in both the front and back of the restaurant, meaning servers and cooks. And the ongoing highway construction near this place makes the trip a bit of an odyssey. Today I was there for a late breakfast and sat at the counter, which I thought would be fast. Not at all, because there were only three servers. I waited too long for coffee, to place my order, to get the food, the check, and, finally, to pay for it at the register while some one was ordering a take-out. Was the food worth it? Not the hash browns, which I ordered as "crisp". They arrived about baked-potato mush. And their early morning biscuits do not age well in the warmer -- brick-like and very salty it seemed. The Jim's up north on the service road of 183, west of Burnett, does not have these issues (I was up there two weeks ago). I hope the Oak Hill location turns it around with some good hires. I know this review is not in line with others, but it is an objective assessment of a classic place that was a lot better not too long ago. read more

I've seen so many of these restaurants throughout San Antonio and Austin. I never stepped in. Until one morning in Austin when all I wanted was a greasy spoon cafe: cheap eats, strong coffee, in-and-out service I made the mistake of ordering an egg white omelette - as my dining companion devoured a delicious looking chicken fried steak. Always have a delicious meal whenever we go to Jim's on highway 71 West. Our server who we've had before is Esme. She is knowledgeable, friendly and we enjoy chatting with her. Also met a new lady named Jasmine. She is the host, front desk lady. She too is very friendly, nice and we enjoyed chatting with her too. She is a hard worker seating people and also checking them out when they pay their bills. The food is always delicious. The blueberry pancakes are very good. The eggs are always cooked precisely how we like. The egg substitute is tasty for the omelette. And the mushrooms and spinach are very fresh. And of course the coffee is always hot and good. Jim's is nostalgic for me as I've lived near one since I was a child. I remember their breakfast tacos and orange juice. I used to get a bacon, egg, potato and cheese which I've upgraded to now add bean. If you're looking for a diner experience in a dinner setting this is the place. Today Jim's Terminated a server after 14 yrs for pulling out her phone a recording a video of empty seats to show that Management has had a vendetta against this employee because she has regulars who come in and want to dine with her as a waiter. The fact she has to resort to videoing the management tactics is just one of the problems Jim's provided no HR support when complaints were brought to the attention leaving this employee helpless and stressed about losing her livelihood 1 write up in 14 yrs and they fire her this is the type of business this is. I was impressed with how busy this place was! It clearly has created a wonderful reputation within the community. That being said, I have no idea why. Service wasn't friendly. I think if you are ordering black coffee and pancakes, it's probably fine. I went just a few days ago and left feeling kinda uncomfortable. The food was good and my waiter was attentive and honestly nice overall, but he made several off-putting comments about my outfit ("I'll try not to look", but also "be careful tonight, it's just the dad in me"). This place has upped its game since the Plague-demic was in town: the place is cleaner than it was, people will step up to seat you within 15 minutes of your arrival (a first!), and the food is solid diner fare. Horrible experience. Host was so condescending, it was ridiculous. I was trying to be lively and chit chat with her and she literally walked off while I was still talking. The waitress? Even worse--she snapped her fingers at us like we were dogs when we couldn't even hear her instructions in the first place. I have worked food AND retail and I totally understand when days are tough and the customers are rude. Even if your day isn't going as planned, however, the customer shouldn't be at fault (I was even trying to be friendly with them). The over all experience was disgusting. I would say, however, if you are a masochist-type person and like a little bit of anger but with good food, this is the place to go. Doesn't look like much when you drive past, but the food inside tells a completely different story. This is homemade comfort food to the core, a diner mixed with Americana and a little bit of Texas thrown in for good measure. Having moved to Austin from Saint Louis, I was looking for another 24 hour diner that would replace the one I left (shout out to Gingham's in Saint Charles, Missouri!). Jim's definitely picks up the slack and then some. My wife and I ate here and I had the South Texas Benedict and she had the Country fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both meals were amazing with hers being fresh (real mashed potatoes, real cream gravy) and mine being delicious as well (real jalapenos, real hash brown potatoes). The coffee is also quite good as well. This is a place I want to come back to, and the atmosphere is also really cool.
