I scheduled an appointment and paid a deposit. The shop did not ask my son's age at the time of booking. When I called back--8 days before the appointment--to confirm details, I was told they do not tattoo minors. I was informed this was a mistake on their end and that my deposit would be refunded. When I followed up for the refund, the owner refused and instead called me an "irresponsible parent." The deposit was kept despite the shop acknowledging the error. So disappointed. We called before going over, my friend literally told him what we wanted to get done. Whom ever answered the phone said no appointments needed. We go there and this young man , skinny , tall black hair guy (which I believe was the receptionist), was extremely rude to us, Extremely rude! we were there a month ago to get our noses pierced and since the service was amazing then (different guy) we thought why not?! and let's go back there ... but it was a completely different guy. I am extremely disappointed, they made us wait and they didn't even allow us to write down our estimates (when writing down the information he was giving me, he literally snatched the paper from my friend stating that he couldn't take this information with us) I had a really bad experience that will make me want to take my business somewhere else ... very disappointed, specially for a resident of Montclair. read more

I've been thinking a lot about getting one of my baby piercing redone because it was uneven. I've shopped around to see what places were in Montclair were open post quarantine. I decided to come here for two reasons, 1 the one sound the corner wanted $20 more which was absolutely ridiculous to get one ear pierced, 2 because I seen hang they had great reviews. Upon arriving they checked my temperature and had me fill out a piercing consent form as well as a COVID-19 per-check one. The guy Chris who did my piercing was very nice and cleaned every thing he was using. The piercing was $50 for one ear with jewelry included, which was still a little too much as I expected to pay $30 but giving that's it's Montclair and business have to make up their loss I was fine with it. I would certainly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a piercing. I will be back to get a couple of tattoos refreshed and covered up and another piercing! read more

I made plans with my friend to get my Septum pierced here tonight. After looking at the website I found that we didn't need an appointment, piercings were walk in only. We tried repeatedly to call the shop prior to coming to make sure they would be able to take us but the phone was busy from 4pm on. We pulled up to the shop around 8:20 only to find the shop closed and employees walking away. The website said they were open until 9pm. This is a review for the piercing service specifically. Came here to get a helix, forward helix, and second lobe done. He didn't know what a forward helix was. In hindsight, I should have left right then and there. The piercer also used a curved barbel for that when it should have been a straight one (as reviewed by another piercer later). I had to take that one out a few months later because another professional piercer told me it was placed wrong and would not heal correctly. During my appointment I also asked him to move the mark a few times because the placement for some of the piercings felt off to me. He showed obvious frustration and told me "it's just a piercing, it's not that serious"... This is ideally a permanent hole in my body, and I was made to feel like asking for a slight change in placement was super inconvenient for him. Don't come here for anything more complicated than a lobe and honestly I wouldn't even recommend it for that. read more

Do not come here to change jewelry ! I got a Conch piercing at another piecing shop about few months ago and it's completely healed so I wanted to replace it with different jewelry.. the guy who change my piercing was being extremely rough when taking out the old piercing, it was very painful also the part that's already healed got teared and started bleeding again! When he tried to put on new jewelry instead of finding the right direction of the hole he literally just forced pushed through!! Came in to switch some earrings around and get another tragus piercing. Bill handled everything and was super cool. He made it an easy experience and even for me who has had a lot of piercings done before, he made it so much less nerve racking by talking and explaining stuff. Quick and easy and clean. Montclair has a large variety of things but this was a pretty cool place for a little tattoo shop and it helps that it's so local! Tragus was $60 and changing a piercing was $10. When asked his opinion on placement and pros and cons of font, he stated "I can do whatever you want", which was super not helpful. Excellent experience at Jinx proof. So happy with the results! Tattoo artist is kind of feisty but he made my first tattoo experience hiccup free so I guess he's the nicest jerk you'll ever meet! I would give them 5 stars but I don't like that the minimum charge for tattoo art in the shop is $80! I shouldn't have paid more than $50 for mine. Have been contemplating about getting my nose re pierced for some time now. Last nose piercing was in the 90's and Trisha knew exactly when I got my piercing. I thought this was so funny because when I asked her how she knew she says it was the placement of the piercing on my nostril. Apparently, in 90's the art of piercing was still in its infancy. Told her back then they put a big ole stud in your nose and she assured me this was not the case anymore. She pulled out a tray of studs and I couldn't be happier with the choices. I got what I wanted a very tiny silver stud. The place was very clean and Trish was very thorough and explained every step of the procedure, as well as how to clean and care for it afterwards. Normally speaking, before I leave a really lousy review for a business I will give them a second chance. For Jinx Proof today was that second chance and again, they failed miserably. 10 or so years ago I went there for a tattoo. It was really nothing special but I wanted it, happened to be in the area and walked in. I will preface the story by telling you that most of my tattoo work was done by Daemon Rowanchilde @ Urban Primitive in Toronto, Canada and yes, I flew there specifically for him to work on me. For anyone reading this who is unfamiliar, google him. His work is amazing. However, this review has nothing to do with their work and everything to do with their demeanor. Back to my story. Walked in 10 years ago with a simple request. The receptionist agreed that my request was easy and went about finding someone to do the tattoo. She went about doing so by asking several of the artists if they wanted to make a quick $130. A few minutes later someone reluctantly and almost begrudgingly agreed. Okay, so maybe they were having a bad, day, night or whatever. Shit happens. Tattoo came out fine and I was happy. Fast forward to today. My girlfriend and I were in Montclair for brunch and I have been threatening to have her initial tattooed on my chest. Being as good a day as any to do so, we strolled down Bloomfield Ave. Powerhouse Tattoo was jammed and since again, tattooing a simple initial is no big deal, I really didn't care who did it. Walked around the corner to Jinx Proof, which I noticed had considerably grown in size since I was last there and now occupied double the space. Normally, businesses expand to meet increased demand; more customers, more space. More customers/better product and or service. Make sense? Anyway, we walked into Jinx Proof which was pretty empty, especially since Powerhouse was packed. Asked the friendly receptionist if someone could tattoo an initial on my chest. She said that it sounded easy and asked one of their artists, Jay, if he could do it. He walked by us without even looking, said "no" and went into the other room. She looked at us, clearly embarrassed and repeated what he had said. I smiled, thanked her and left. I assume that at some point Jay will probably read this so I am going to speak directly to him: Jay, I have flown many miles to be tattooed by some of the best artists in the world. Besides talent, their common characteristics were courtesy, manners and respect. Today, you showed me none of that. Fortunately, there are many, many tattoo parlors these days. As I'm sure you know, competition is fierce as many shops compete for the same dollars. The days of the neanderthal tattoo artist with the attitude faded about the same time as the Rubik's Cube. Now, everywhere you look, there is some asshole like me who is more than willing to share a negative experience with the very people who are looking to select who is going to earn their money. No one reading this is not interested in getting a tattoo. Sorry if you had a bad day but it's probably not in your best interest to take it out on your customers. Tattoos are expensive, deal with it. So, now that that's out of the way. But they're fair here. They know they do good work. All the employees are fun. Everyone has years and years of experience. Get past the loud screamo music and you'll be fine. They're super busy these days, especially after expanding, so you need a few weeks to make an appointment. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, since it's going on your body forever but try not to be a jackass about it. The shop itself is beautiful and clean, major upgrade from what it used to be.
