Absolutely one of my favorite spots for my ramen fix! I love that they offer great lunch/brunch deals--nothing beats a big bowl of ramen with two delicious sides. My absolute go-to order is the Tonkatsu Ramen. For the sides, you can't go wrong with the crispy chicken, brussels sprouts tempura, spicy creamy shrimp tempura, or the crispy rice with spicy tuna. There is plenty of seating spread out over both downstairs and upstairs levels. Located right in the Union Market area, so parking can definitely be tough. Your best bet is to use the local garages, park at Union Market, or if it's way too busy, head across Florida Avenue to park in the residential area. Highly recommended! read more

Visited for lunch while in was in DC for work and was very happy with warm welcome, attentive service, and delicious ramen. We popped in right at the start of lunch rush and got two seats at the bar downstairs. We were able to order quickly and our food came hot and fresh. Went here on a whim because I was craving ramen and the place looked like it had a nice vibe from the outside. The lighting is low, which makes it a good spot for a date or a chill dinner. I sat at the bar area, which actually overlooks the cooking station. Service was fine, nothing bad, nothing over-the-top. I ordered the JINYA Chicken Ramen, which is usually my go-to at any ramen spot, so I had a lot to compare it to. The broth was a little mild at first, so I tried to doctor it up. The condiments they had out weren't really my usual choices. I normally reach for sesame oil, vinegar, or even a little hoisin, but they didn't have those. There was dumpling sauce, something that looked like a chili garlic sauce (but wasn't quite), and one other option. That said, interestingly enough, the next day the broth tasted way more flavorful. The chicken, though, was really good. Chicken in ramen can sometimes be dry or bland, but this was moist and very tender, which I appreciated. Another thing to note that I liked was that you can get free noodles if you have broth left over! I also ordered the dragon fruit fizz, and it was delicious and smelled amazing. One glass gave me a slight buzz, but mostly it was just a really good drink. Bonus points for location. It's right across the street from a free three-hour parking garage, which is always a win. Came to redeem an expiring birthday reward, so dined at a pretty late hour close to closing. The staff was very quick in bringing out my order thankfully, but you could tell they were ready to close down for the night. I ordered one of the vegetarian ramen options and of course my birthday reward dessert of matcha tiramisu. I was surprised by how onion dominate the ramen dish was, but the broth was incredible and made up for the other overpowering toppings. The matcha tiramisu was different; a very pretty presentation but the taste wasn't what I was expecting of a tiramisu. Definitely matcha dominate. I wish there was a bit more espresso taste. The union market location is tucked away from the market in one of the side retail bays. Easy to walk right past it. The ambiance is dark and trendy; I like the bar seating for solo dining. I came here for my brother's birthday on a random Friday evening with his wife and kids. The menu isn't bad but most of everything on it. It's very flavorful. I'm not a Ramen person, but I was able to put together a couple of side items that I enjoyed everything that I had. My brother is a very big Ramen person. I had some of his as well as some of my mothers and it was so good. The bathrooms were clean the vibe gives a very trendy, but laid-back kind of vibe. I did order a lemon drop. My lemon drop came out as a shot so if you do drink lemon drops or favorite specialty martinis, make sure that your specific that you wanted a martini and not a regular shot. The waiter was very nice to have my drink turned around and changed it into a martini however it was very bitter, and I did have to get some simple syrup to add to it. for Friday when we visited, it was not very busy. That waiter was very attentive to us, but I think that's because the restaurant was on it slower end. My other friend ordered the Beef Birria ramen dish which she also thought was great. I ordered the Spicy Chicken ramen bowl and between the options: Mild, Spicy, and Hot - I got Spicy and while the broth was flavorful, it was not spicy. Additionally, I got about three cuts of chicken. The chicken was super flavorful but I wish I got more meat. Additionally, the seasoned egg cost extra for the Birria and Chicken bowls. If you've been to one of these, you've pretty much been to them all. That said, however, I think the manager was here when we came... At least he was giving manager vibes. By the way he was ordering people around and being extremely rude. He was at the host stand and seated us. He didn't welcome us in, but I definitely heard him welcoming in white people. Interesting. The food took way longer than I expect from JINYA. In fact, I think this is the longest I've ever waited for a bowl of Ramen. It is also worth noting that on this visit, whatever the greeting is that they typically yell across a restaurant, was not yelled when we entered. This is something that was initiated for every guest that came after us by the host, but not for us. The food was fine. The service was slow and it took the server far longer than it should have to get the additional items I requested. Additionally, I'm not used to my Ramen coming out, then my toppings coming out minutes later. Oh well. I don't think I need to come back to this location. read more

I believe this is the new location that opened up not too long ago in Union Market. To be honest, I had previous bad experiences with JINYA at their other DC location & one of their Houston, TX locations. I decided to give them a THIRD chance mainly because my friend wanted to come & invited me. The ambiance was pretty dark but allowed for natural lighting in the main dining area. They had the upper floor closed off for a private event. We met up & decided to order some bowls. My friend got the vegan ramen, in which he loved. I ordered the Spicy Tonkotsu bowl, which was pretty massive. Shockingly, it was pretty good. Was it the best ramen I ever had? No, but it was much better from my past experiences with other JINYA locations. We also had the salmon tacos (we ordered tuna, but apparently they didn't hear us?), and mimosas to have a brunch feel. I will say the service was kinda spotty. Sometimes, they would be quick, sometimes, the wait staff would be gone for a long time. I have seen some people have mixed reviews for this location and the other DC location. I think it's best to go yourself to be a better judge. I personally enjoyed it and will likely return again. This location is off the red line (NoMa) so it should be a relatively short walk, about 10 minutes. There's also hectic parking in the area if it isn't a busy day. read more

The chicken also stood out because it was marinated and tenderized so it had lots of flavor under the crust. The salad and greens were good but onion dressing a little powerful. I got the recommended tonkotsu pork ramen. The noodles were really excellent and tasted great. The pork broth was really tuned to right mouth feel. It was less salty but super thick. The pork itself is good. The cut used had a great flavor that didn't get some of the "dirty" taste you sometimes get with this cut. Egg was good, a little runnier. The holy grail of ramen has finally made its way to Union Market and I'm so happy about it! Jinya has always been my favorite ramen restaurant so having one 5 minutes from my house is a God-send. I got my regular spicy ramen with a seasoned egg and crunchy onions. I also made it a combo meaning I got 4 pork gyoza on the side as well as a house salad. Zuri, my server, was so sweet and cute! Brought my favorite foodie friend here for her birthday. I love the ambience. We sat at the bar because it was a birthday night and just the two of us. JINYA is hands down my go-to for mother-son dates, and it's not just because they have a vegan kids' meal that keeps King's egg and milk allergies in check. This time, we hit the Union Market location and snagged a prime parking spot right out front (a rare DMV miracle!). Perfect timing too--because my little date had knocked out in the car, so into the stroller he went while I walked in, already winning the day. We were greeted, seated immediately, and handed menus with a smile. My server, Jennifer, stopped by to introduce herself, but I was deep in "menu limbo," so she gave me some extra time. She had staff meeting duties anyway, so I didn't feel too guilty. Once the team meeting wrapped up, Jennifer returned, and I asked about the happy hour specials--because you know, it's 3-6 PM, Monday to Friday, and mama deserves a treat! She pointed me to the back of the menu and suggested the Malibu Sunrise, so I obviously ordered that, along with a salmon poke taco. The taco came out in a flash, packed with flavor like always, and then the Malibu Sunrise made its entrance--this drink was so pretty it practically glowed. And listen, it wasn't just looks--the taste? Divine. Whoever made it was doing the Lord's work, I'm telling you. For the main event, I went with the Chef's Special Tangy Shrimp Cilantro ramen. Shrimp were huge, and while the batter was battling with the broth and losing, the flavor still came through. Honestly, I was worried it wouldn't be as satisfying as my usual spicy chicken ramen, but this bowl came through with the same level of comfort and fullness. Right when I'm halfway through, my tiny date wakes up, hangry and ready to eat. I flag Jennifer down and order King's vegan kids' meal, along with water. I mentioned his allergies, and she confirmed they'd adjust the noodles accordingly--mom win! His ramen came out quickly, and he devoured it like a pro (after some solid noodle blowing to cool it down). He even alternated bites of his taco with ramen slurps, proving once again that this kid has taste. After requesting some to-go containers, we got the check, and I settled up. Now, I have to mention that when you walk in and out of JINYA, the whole team greets and bids you farewell in a language I'm not entirely sure of, but it's all part of the charm. It's loud enough that King woke up, and this is a kid who can sleep through a marching band! The chicken salad was delicious and they also have a flavor-packed selection of cocktails and juices. The smoky old fashioned was a favorite. JINYA has a happening downstairs including a bar, large high top table, and several smaller tables bordering the room. Upstairs is a bit quieter with booths and tables. Prices were reasonable, portions were more than enough to fill you up. We especially appreciated the humor, energy, and recommendations of our server, Pamela. We waited 35 minutes to be seated, and then another 10 minutes just to be acknowledged by a server after being shown to our table. When we finally got our drinks, the soda was completely flat, lacking any carbonation. The food didn't do much to redeem the experience. The ramen arrived cold, with broth that tasted like an old batch barely reheated. The dumplings were burnt on one side and somehow still cold in the center. Serving cold and overcooked food in the same dish is a tough combo to overlook. All in all, this visit was a letdown both in service and quality. I know what JINYA is capable of from other locations, which made this even more disappointing. I won't be returning to this particular location. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! My family dined here to celebrate a milestone for my daughter - she requested this place specifically. She had eaten here before but it was the first time for the rest of us. After reading the reviews, we were excited. It was a weekday evening. The first floor seating was full and they closed their second floor seating. We were told the wait would be about 20 minutes. At 20 minutes, it did not look like any of the other patrons were close to leaving so we decided to eat at the bar. The vibe and atmosphere was solid but with a larger party, conversation was nearly impossible. We were seated at a table however, after we ordered our food and ate our appetizers. The food was surprisingly good (only because I am not a big ramen fan) but everyone in our group was pleased with their food. The service was awful. It appeared the server was angry, from the start. She was unfriendly towards our family during the 20 minutes while we waited for a table/bar, so I knew what kinda of time she was on. When I placed my vegetarian order, I read the words directly from the menu. She asked me if I wanted "Tonkotsu" (which later understood describes a pork broth). I told her I had no idea what that term meant and asked her to explain it, to which she responded with one word - Tonkotsu. Perhaps she was new, because it was clear she couldn't define it either. I pointed to the menu and she read, out loud (and still angrily), the same thing I had repeated to her twice before. She seemed angered, as if I had ordered a Big Mac and simply couldn't read their menu. Most of the rest of the service was fine. She came by our table a couple of times to see if we needed anything but I noticed it was fewer times than she had visited her other table. When she removed the dishes from the table however, she spilled broth on my shoe. She saw it. She looked at me after she did it. She walked away. No apology. No acknowledgement of being careless while taking away dishes with broth still in them. The broth stained my shoe. Now, I believe race played a part in the service she chose to give us. I believe she had a preconceived notion about how families that look like mine dine and tip. I can't prove that, but as someone who thinks about race deeply and experiences this country's attitude to some, it was clear as day. Portions were small but again, happy hour prices and portions. I don't get this to five stars because while my whisky drink was good, the others at my table did not have great cocktails. The lychee martini looks like a jar of pickled onions. Thankfully didn't taste like that but presentation could be better. Next time I'll try the ramen.
