Most of the boxes are in Uptown Charlotte and, according to wikipedia, primarily in African-American neighborhoods. Its circulation is 22,305. This week's newspaper is sixteen pages with the above-the-fold headline and photo of North Carolina's new Lieutenant Governor-elect, Mark Robinson. Robinson is a Republican, which presents certain challenges when the Governor is a Democrat. And the Post provides a great amount of ink to discuss. The Life section is timely with a holiday menu and recipes and lifestyle stories, yes, from a black perspective. It also has other small items such as book markers, and other small crafts created by local artists. The store offers a trade credit program that participants can earn up to 50% off all used books in the store as well as an extra 15% off any new titles, including special orders. It is located in the Lowes' Foods Shopping Center, with free parking, at the corner of Highway 49 and Roberta Road in Harrisburg, NC. Overall, 100% recommended!

I read through some of the other reviews and I want to set the record straight. Yes, it's inside a church but there is a separate entrance. Yes, there are Christian books but also other genres. Yes, the coffee is very affordable BECAUSE all the staff are volunteers. No one is getting paid and they LOVE what they do. All smiles and great service. The proceeds go to local and global missions of the church. Win, win all the way around. The place itself is very spacious. Two levels. The seating areas are comfortable and far enough apart you can have some semiprivacy if you need it. My friend who brought me says she comes here all the time to study (she's in college). All of the staff knew her by name. (love places like that) I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't really speak to the coffee (although my friend says it's pretty good). I am a tea drinker though and they have a variety of flavors, some refresher juice drinks, a few pastries. Please support. Every now and again if you're thinking of getting coffee or a pastry, choose them. Why not? Do some good for the community through others who are committed to giving back.

When I'm traveling, I get really pissy when I get out of range...all NPR is good stuff, but I know when all the programs will be on my local one, and I'm familiar with all their voices. Their coverage of local issues is top-notch, like all the recent information on the bailouts, the Wachovia failure, and the impact on our local economy. I haven't found anywhere else to get this kind of detailed, nuanced information in the Charlotte media. Charlotte Talks is awesome. They also do a great job of covering local events. I hear more about what's coming up in the community from the little mentions in NPR than anywhere else on television, print, or online...and certainly more than other radio stations. I know I'm becoming an old lady when I don't know what's hot on the radio, but I can tell you what's hot on NPR...Sigh.

That said, WFAE simply fails due to their inadequate fund raising efforts. They don't ever seem capable of reaching their funding goal and have to extend their efforts by several days. This week I see they have launched a new fund raising effort because they fell short for the year. Whoever is in charge of this should be looking for a new job, in another line of work. This would be unacceptable in any other business. I was a sustainable supporter until not long ago but let it drop because, as a retired mechanic, I was contributing what I could afford. Every fundraising season (2 weeks, 4 times a year, minimum) I would be barraged with phone calls pleading with me to contribute more. After telling them I could not afford more, they kept asking me for more, anyway. What part of no do you not understand? The best thing on WFAE is Mike Collins and Charlotte Talks. The rest I can get from other stations or the internet. So, goodbye WFAE. I wish you luck with your fund-raising efforts. Mike Collins, I'll miss you.

There is a cute little frozen yogurt spot connected to the book store, which is nice My son can spend hours in these book stores. He loves to read and see all the comics and toys that they have to offer. It isn't cheap here, so keep that in mind, I compared the price of a book that I've been looking to get, it was about 24 dollars here and only 13 dollars on Amazon. But, I suppose if you're not willing to wait for something to be shipped and you rather have it in hand immediately, this is the way to go!

It is certainly impressive being greeted by Spider-man battling Doc Octopus overhead. Tons and tons of comics, magazines, books, games, etc. So much to see hard to take it all in. The only thing I missed were the displays of beloved titles from the 1940s to 1960s. So I was told of a huge comic show in Boston and large stocks were sent up there. A very impressive store. Everyone was very helpful and answered questions that I had. I even brought a small box of my personal comics for them to look over. Some would even argue that buying books is a "waste" of your money. And living in our economy today who really wants to "waste" money. I don't know about you, but I am definitely on board for saving as much money as I can when buying my books. With that being said, last week I perused around the web with my freshly printed list of ISBN numbers pricing my textbooks at several stores trying to find the biggest bang for my buck. Often times I found that the stores were adopting a new textbook rental option which allowed students to rent their books at a decently reduced price depending on the condition of the rental (i.e. "New" or "Used" textbooks). I just so happened to stumble upon a fairly new store to the university area called "Miner Books." So I decided to check it out and see what the store had to offer. Typing in each ISBN number I found that this store offered free ground shipping, and many of their textbook rental prices to be noticeably less expensive than the other stores I'd checked into. I'd hit the jackpot free shipping and money saver! This store is definitely an all around win. Also when you order online the store offers an "In-Store Pick Up" option so if they have the book in stock you can purchase it online and then pick it up in store. And to top it all off the location of the store couldn't be more convenient for the Charlotte college student. Situated just off of University City Boulevard, and seconds from the UNC Charlotte main entrance to campus, Miner Books is sure to take off as soon as the word gets out about their great textbook prices and service!
