Dr Sy has taken amazing care of me and my husband for years. She offers very comprehensive testing and analysis and recommendations outside of just writing prescription after prescription. She truly tries to get to the root cause of health issues while also focusing on prevention. I feel like we scored with finding her. Truly a gem among a sea of disappointing doctors. And, I have read the other reviews about her staff. I have found them to be really helpful and kind. Take the time to talk to them and you will find that too. They are wonderful women. read more

When I first met Dr. Sy she seemed to really care about my health issues that I was facing at just 31 years old. She ordered this huge lab panel that I now look back on as a huge waste and her office just trying to get money from my insurance. This extensive lab pannel has not addressed my chronic headaches, fatigue, heart palpitations and extreme tiredness. She kept trying to push me off my birth control that I've been on for 10+ years because she was convinced it was the cause for my high blood pressure and to try her alternative method for managing my PMS symptoms through her osteopathic stretching. I discussed previously my high blood pressure is not caused by my birth control as I have already tested being off of it and it was still high and the insistence to take me off of it to address symptoms that are well controlled doesn't make much sense to me. Again, I think this was motivated by money so she can charge me for every visit. My blood work had also come back with a positive trigger with some kind of Auto Immune Disorder. No explaination about what it is or how its releated and when I asked said she was out of time. I would like to note that she came into the visit 5mins late and to tell me she was out of time was very very rude and unprofessional when I'm asking questions about my health. I have no idea what Sjogren is or how/if its related to my current issues. She tried to refer me another doctor, but why would I go see another doctor if my current issues are unrelated? I'm assuming once again she gets a pay out for referring patients to other doctors. She sent me this huge list of supplements to take again no idea what its for or if its releated. Probably just another money hungry attempt for me buy something from her. I was hopeful doing all this lab work would have provided answers but it left me with more questions then solutions, so I'll be looking for advice else where. This office is very money focused, its pretty obvious. She will sell you on lab work, more visits, referrls, supplements, and other non sense you don't need. I would not reccomend this doctor! I sent her a message about all this but she probably won't care. We are just a dollar sign to her and she can replace us with new patients. read more

I love Dr. Sy and her nurse Iresa. Both of them deserve 5 stars. Dr. Sy takes the time to get to know what's going on with you, has great bedside manner, and takes the time to document what you talk about. I've learned a lot about my health from Dr. Sy and really appreciated the time and effort she puts in patient education and care. She's also honest and upfront with what she can do instead of lying like other doctors. I trust her so much that I bought a $40 probiotic supplement once. And it was a really good probiotic, probably the best one I've tried. I'd buy it again if I wasn't broke. Iresa is a fantastic nurse, she's really on top of it, she's busy but she has never dropped the ball, she knows how to help you, has great bedside manner, professional, and is a great support to the good doctor. I really wanted them to be my primary care provider, because they're both everything I want in a doctor and a nurse. The place is like your typical doctor's office, no complaints. Lots of parking, easy to find. It's easy enough to make an appointment if Lucia allows it to be an easy, pleasant interaction. Most of the time, I just make an appointment online. My issue would be with Lucia, just like some of the negative reviews. Look, I'm an easy person to get along with. I don't do conflict and I let a lot of things slide. Just look at my reviews, most of them are positive. It pains me to write negative reviews because I don't like talking badly about a business unless it really pushed me to. There are times that I feel like a negative review is warranted so that the business can improve and/or so I can warn people about it. I went to Dr. Sy years ago and though Lucia has always rubbed me the wrong way, I tried to ignore it because I liked the doctor and the nurse. She's rude in person and on the phone. I was actually taken aback by her strong personality, but I didn't take any of it personally. An example, without asking for permission, she grabbed my cell phone to look at it. Other times, she's just plain crude. I don't know if Lucia is just socially awkward or just unaware that she is alienating and puts off a bad vibe. She reminds me more of a correction officer than a front desk person. But I can't be sure, because I've never been arrested or been in jail yet lol. It's usually not a big deal as I don't have to go to the doctor all the time. But one time, I was having a particularly bad month and she was just more unbearable than usual. She gave me attitude when I refused to buy vitamins and supplements, and was incredibly rude about it even though I ended up buying an overpriced protein bar and a $60 tub of protein powder I never even opened. So I decided I won't go anymore, I just don't need that stress. It's already hard for me to say no to people so when she pressured me and then gave me a hard time about it, it really put me off. After a couple of years, I went back to see Dr. Sy again because I really wanted her as my primary. I was hoping that she would have already replaced Lucia with a much more pleasant face and a much more professional front desk representative. Nope. Lucia is still there. I'm surprised, but I was hopeful that maybe they have worked on her attitude and her overall service. I don't understand why they'd keep her otherwise. My interaction with her was mostly fine until I was on my way out and Lucia comments about my physical appearance. She said I looked like a boy. The last time I heard that comment was when I was 5 years old after my grandmother gave me a bowl cut. I just tried to ignore her but she kept saying it to me. Maybe she was trying to get a reaction or acknowledgement, but she was definitely getting annoying when she kept repeating that I look like a boy. First of all, I doubt it. Second of all, I'm friggin gorgeous. I'll show up in a bikini and full pageant makeup if there was a next time. Third, even if I did, who asked her and how is that comment professional or appropriate? I didn't say anything to her or showed any reaction, which was hard to do since she kept saying it over and over in a manner that sounded like she was making fun of me. I really don't understand why she's still employed there. The experience with the doctor was pleasant and helpful, but then it ends with an almost-comedic bullying at the end. It's a bummer because there aren't very many good doctors out there like Dr. Sy. Anyway... It's such a shame that I just can't put up with an otherwise hilarious front desk person. And I mean hilarious as in annoying and generally unpleasant. If Lucia doesn't get under your skin, I do recommend trying and seeing Dr. Sy and her nurse Iresa. read more

Wanted to say once again how wonderful Dr. Sy and her staff are. I started their health and wellness program about a year ago and I've never been better in my whole life! Lisa Exceen who works with patients on nutrition is a wealth of knowledge. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and borderline "pre-diabetic". With the proper prescribed clean diet and daily supplements I've been able to reverse all my ailments WITHOUT taking any prescription medications. I've lost 40lbs the healthy way. I feel absolutely amazing! On another note, if people are complaining that Dr. Sy is pushing her patients to buy vitamins I say, sell me all the vitamins you have because it's a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a $20-30-40 dollar bottle of supplements than to buy prescription medications. Also, you will not have the unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects of prescription drugs. read more

My husband and I have been going to Dr. Sy for years. At first it was great going to her, front desk wasn't bad and she genuinely seemed to care about her patients. But the front desk ladies are terrible, insensitive, and always have a nasty attitude. They should definitely not be in the customer service industry. And Dr. Sy now seems only interested in money and not the well being of the patients anymore. Charging for a zoom office visit of 20 minutes and the $25 per page to be filled out by her, ends up being very expensive, especially because insurance will not pay for the $25 per page fee. She has lost all her bedside manners, lacks the ability to genuinely care and be present with the patient. Sad to say we will never be returning after being treated so poorly. Would not recommend unless you are a fan of that kind of treatment. read more

Joan Yvette Sy, DO is a caring, knowledgable osteopathic physician. She readily communicates with her patients by email via her website's patient portal. Her medical assistant, Iresa, is wonderful. She has worked for the doctor for a number of years. The front desk person, Lucia Mangino, is rude, never smiles, and is lacking in both medical office front desk skills and basic computer skills. Looking at a physician's name on a referral form, Lucia was not able to tell which was the first name of the specialist to whom Dr. Sy referred me, and which was the last name. I have contemplated several times switching primary care physicians because of the errors Lucia has made. One error caused me to come very close to my insurance being cancelled. Another error caused a delay in my getting tests the doctor ordered. I highly recommend your seeing Dr. Sy, but only if you keep your interactions with Lucia Mangino to a minimum. I'm giving Dr. Sy a rating of "5" and Lucia Mangino a rating of "1." This makes my rating for the office a "3." read more

I am so happy to have found Dr.Sy, from the moment of my first contact with Luchia her receptionist I felt the caring attitude of this practice. Luchia has spent a lot of time arranging and rearranging appointments for me, finding time for me when I had an emergency and always calling me back if a cancellation occurred; I know that she deals with illness all day but I feel a genuine sympathy and caring from her. Dr. Sy's nurse was also a pleasant surprise, another caring lady, calm efficient, I had no problem explaining my woes to her/ Dr Sy as everyone has remarked is as a Dr. should be, very thorough, knowledgeable and interested in your problems and she has no problem referring you to the specialist care if you need it. It was a bonus to me that Dr.Sy was an osteopathic doctor( two specialists for the price of one) I booked an osteopathic treatment and she was very gentle too.. Waste of money! I went to dr sy. for osteopathy treatments. Even after leaving an hour early i still had 50 min of traffic left. I had been calling and letting the receptionist know about the traffic and providing multiple updates, she even told me to turn around. Then i find out that they are charging me $150 for missing! Even after the receptionist told me to turn around. I was already on the fence about these "treatments"... Now im never going back! After Reading all the reviews, I was shocked that there were so many negative reviews. It seems people were either "all in" or had a negative experience. I have been a patient of Dr Sy's for 10-plus years and I could not imagine a family doctor (and office) that is more caring about her/their patients' health. (I think I represent the silent majority with my 5 star review, as people are more inclined to post negative than positive reviews). Dr Sy remembers more about my health than I do, and she always makes recommendations for small improvements in my lifestyle, dietary supplements or health care options (physical therapy, referrals, etc). I ALWAYS feel she has my best interest in mind, and she is extremely thorough and explains everything, to include how things will be billed, and what to expect on the financial side. Her office manager and asst/nurse are also VERY GOOD about discussing the financial side. All 3 let you know what to expect before you make any decisions, so you know where you stand. Here is some helpful info: - Only one time in 10 years did I wait longer than 20 minutes past my apt time to see Dr Sy. - Lucia at the front desk is a very good office manager, and though she may not give you a big smile when you walk-in, I have never had any type of misunderstanding, mistake or any problem at all. And she is always pleasant, NEVER rude. And she keeps a VERY GOOD office. - Be on time. This is a very busy office because she is an EXCEPTIONAL Doctor. If you are late she has to try to squeeze you in or reschedule you. She is a very "human" person and she really does care, but she also wants to give you the level of care you deserve. Dr. Joan Sy is amazing. At 50 years old, my health, body and overall health has never been better. Under her care over the last 10 years, I've weaned off all 4-blood pressure meds and can move and be an active physically normal functioning person again. My Dad, who is also under her care no longer needs meds to control his diabetes. If you want a physician who really cares, who will partner with you to improve the quality of your health, who will not baby you, will challenge you and recommend medical care, products & healthcare partners that she truly believes in, and who stands firm in refusing to "go along" with what you want if she believes it is not in your best health interest - then you want Dr. Joan Sy. Will you have to wait sometimes to see her - yes you will, because she has more and more patients that want her kind of skills and dedication in practicing good medication, and because she enjoys talking the time to listen to her patients (unlike most doctors who will come in and rush out). Besides, she is so worth the wait. And in responding to those who complained about the appointments to return for your lab results; if you want a doctor that will not take the time to explain your results to you in person so you can understand your body and health better, then go back to those doctors who will write you a prescription as soon as they walk in the door, the ones who will mail you the results and never bother to give you a true assessment of your health status. Oh my, this was NOT a good experience. I called Dr. Sy's office in February to schedule a new patient appointment for my husband and was given an appointment for March 31 at 4:30 pm (my request was the latest appointment of the day). On March 26, I received a voice mail from the office that Dr. Sy has an "emergency" and won't be able to see him on March 31. I called the next day to reschedule. I explained that my husband needs either an early morning or latest appointment of the day. Lucia gave me two options, and I told her I would check with my husband and get back to her. I called her back first thing in the morning to accept the appointment on April 13 at 4:50 (two weeks later than the original appointment). Lucia told me, I'm sorry that time isn't available. I asked her why she would give away the appointment time she offered to me and she was pretty rude, complaining that she had to reschedule many patients (not my problem). Needless to say, I ended up having to schedule a different appointment with a different doctor because now Dr. Sy didn't have any availability until May and my husband's medications would have run out by then. This is not what I would call good patient care or good customer service. Husband: This is a complete failure of the office, They had absolutely no care for the customer time and all they care is their personal & office schedule. I would recommend anyone to look for other health care offices. The Dr. vision is absolutely bogus. read more

I've been going to Dr. Sy for over four years. I even continued to go to her despite the fact that her location moved and is now 25 minutes from my office. It's not easy to find a good Doctor and the drive is worth it. Dr. Sy is very thorough and has a good bedside manner. She often attends conferences to stay updated on new practices, research, and technologies. She doesn't just give you test results, she takes the time to explain what they mean and answer any questions. When she's with you, it's clear that you are her priority and she doesn't seem rushed or distracted. Her office has an online portal so you can book your appointments online, get your test results or other medical records, pay invoices, email the staff, and more. The front desk is always very thorough and friendly. I've never had any issues with billing. They always try their best to squeeze you in if it's important, and if not, they will talk to Dr. Sy about your issue so they can try to work something out. They don't over book so it's very rare to have a wait long to see the Doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Sy for your general doctor, as well as adjustments for any musculoskeletal issues since she is also a DO. read more

I have Health Net through Covered CA and saw Dr. Sy for the first time yesterday. I called a couple of months ago to schedule a well woman's exam (yes you should plan to book in advance - I believe Dr. Sy works at two facilities but don't quote me). The woman who booked my appointment was not bubbly but quite pleasant and informative. When I walked in, the front office was clean and I was greeted by the receptionist. Dr. Sy herself was wonderful. She is the only doctor I've seen who actually read every line of my patient questionnaire and addressed all of my comments/questions/concerns. I have many requirements going into veterinary school in January so, both Dr. Sy and her staff are working above and beyond to help me fulfill these requirements and paperwork. Definitely finding a different doctor. First, they make your wait forever! Secondly I had a huge blood panel done and when I went in to talk to her about my results, she basically told me I could have a heart attack! She'd talk to me like I was 5 years old, which was extremely annoying and unprofessional. I told her I was pregnant and she told me was progesterone levels were extremely low, and most likely I'd have a miscarriage! Seriously? She took my blood before I ovulated! So of course it was low! She stressed me out so much, I cried non stop. She said all I could do was use cream from Mothers and that they don't make prescription progesterone! LIE!!!! She LIED! They do make it! Several forms! She just wasn't willing to prescribe it! Did she want me to miscarry??? She believes in her "Vitamins", that she tries to sell you every single bloody visit!!! I don't care what her beliefs are in prescription meds, that's my body and my baby she's messing with!!! Pisses me off so much!! NEVER AGAIN WILL I SEE THIS WOMAN! HUGE MISTAKE! I've seen Dr. Sy for two years now and get the same low quality service. Each time I am in, she and her staff try to sell products that are unrelated to my situation. If I need blood work she tries to convince me that going to a standard lab is a bad idea and that I need to spend $60 out of pocket for her lab to run irrelevant tests just to. I strongly support proactive screening but her tests and products are not recommended when I get second opinions from other physicians. I am also frustrated that she spends 5 minutes in the room and will only see me for a single question and walks out telling me I need a second appointment if I have further questions. I understand that doctors today are very busy and need to work differently so that they can get paid for all their services but Dr. Sy is only trying to make an extra dollar at the expense of her clients. Dr. Sy is awesome and always takes the time to answer any questions I may have. She's nice and seems to care, not like other doctors I have had. I started going a couple years ago in Irvine and now that she moved locations, it's a little out of my way, but it's worth going to someone you can trust and be open to. Also, I love the staff there! They are super nice and understanding. I was running late to my appointment at the end of the day and they still let me keep the appointment on a Friday afternoon! Would definitely recommend. She listened to all my concerns and was very patient with me. She answered all my questions in detail and addressed all my concerns. At my last visit I got into an argument with Dr. Sy about the scheduling issues and the fact that they schedule several 10 min appts instead of putting everything in one. Why do I have to come in twice to get test results? Dr. Sy told me straight out of her mouth, If she were to discuss my test results in one appt she would have to spend an hour with me and ... wait for it.... insurance is not paying her to spend an hour with me. Wait what?? Last time I checked insurance bills by the diagnosis code not by the hour. And I have an HSA plan which means until I reach my deductible I'm paying you, not insurance. Anyhow that was all I needed to hear to know it's time to find a new doc. I kept saying to myself that the only reason they are splitting everything up like that was so that they can keep racking up the charges. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt since she is such a good doc. But when she came out of her mouth and made it clear that her only concern was getting paid I was so disappointed. read more

I went to Dr. Say for the first time for my yearly routine physical. I have insurance that is preventative only. It pays for my yearly exam and all of the accompanying diagnostic testing (Mammogram and blood work). Dr. Sy convinced me to use the special lab she is affiliated with for an extra $50 instead of Quest Diagnostics, which my insurance covered in full. When the results were in she wanted to schedule me for another visit to discuss the results, which for the most part, were fairly normal. She neglected to tell me that I would be charged out of pocket for an additional visit. When I called I was told she refused to speak with me over the phone regarding the results, as most physicians do. I would have to come in for a 20 minute visit. I called my insurance, Anthem Blue Cross, and they said they would cover the visit since it was a follow up to my well visit physical and that Dr. Sy would just have to code it as preventative. When the office called me back I was told she would not do it. She would only code it as diagnostic even though I was not ill, did not need to see a doctor, and was merely going in to discuss results and recommendations from my routine physical. Needless to say, I did not make that appointment and I'm left sitting here with results I cannot decipher on my own. To say I am extremely disappointed is an understatement. It's no different than a bait and switch tactic. Why would anyone go in for a physical with a doctor who will only give you the results if you pay additionally for them. What a racket! Dr. Sy is a good doctor, she's very kind and patient. However, the front office staff is very rude. Last appointment, we waited 40 minutes to be seen by Dr. Sy, with a small apology from the nurse. Today, we were 15 minutes late to an appointment and the woman at the front desk was very disrespectful about it. She said, "You're 20 minutes late, you completely missed your appointment" in a condescending tone. We apologized, and when we were asked for the nature of the visit (blood test results), the woman wouldn't even let us stay to see Dr. Sy later in the day. She was uncompromising and only named dates for future appointments next month. She was being unreasonable, considering that reading results would only take about 10 minutes. Furthermore, they weren't busy; there was only one patient in the waiting room. Her tone was unnecessary and embarrassing. I don't know how she still has a job there. read more
