This store is a great place to find all kinds of material for any projects that you are working on. You have plenty of options! This Jo-Ann moved from their Garners Ferry Road location to a new larger space. The old location had a much smaller staff but very good service. There was always a coupon in the basket at the e trance that you could use on checkout so I never minded paying full price for the rest of my items. This new store rarely has any coupons and the ones that are there are for future use so you must save them and co e back two weeks or so later to use them (if you remember). The staff at the fabric cutting table are incompetent. They have a number system so you must pull a number and wait your turn. The problem is they don't call the numbers. They just wait on whoever is standing closer. Then when you ask them about it they have an attitude. One lady was having problems cutting the fabric...I needed several yards and it was already taking her over 10 minutes. So I kindly placed my hand on the fabric to hold it down so she could manage it better. She rolled her eyes at me and told me to move my hand because she couldn't continue to cut the fabric with my hand on it. She said that is what she was told in training! However another lady asked me to hold it during another visit. If you are looking for any of the sewing machines found in the sale paper then forget it. The only machines they have are expensive Viking machines priced over $1000. It seems as if Viking has set up shop in the middle of the store. There is one Viking employee there most of the time who is not affiliated with Jo-Ann and sits there and makes embroidery all day. The checkout is ridiculous. One person (sometimes two) while the rest of the staff wander around and talk. A checkout lady even complained to me about a customer who complained about the wait time. She said that if she wanted to buy her items then shed just have to wait like everyone else! Save your money and go to Hobby Lobby on Forest Drive, to the other Joann or to House of Fabrics. This whole store seems like a poorly run Jo-Ann training facility for remedial staff hired by the company owners 5 year old kid or something. read more

I love Joann fabrics store but whoever it was that answered my call Tuesday July 16th @ 3:16 pm was very rude. I asked two simple questions about their classes and she told me what all they had and one of them I didn't quite make out what she said, so I asked her very nicely what was the other class she had mentioned she told me with a nasty attitude. Even if it wasn't an attitude it's not what you said but how you say it. I just didn't like my experience with customer service today over the phone but I will keep continuing to enjoy shopping with them besides it's my favorite store read more

Only because you can't give zero. This is the only business that has products in store that you can't buy. We wanted to purchase a sewing machine for a Christmas present but couldn't because only one person is allowed to sell sewing machines and they weren't there. Apparently the process of scanning a bar code and taking money is too complicated for the associates. read more

NEVER again! If you shop here just for basic crafting supplies you should have little to no problem finding what you need with plenty of coupon offers available online and mailed to you. However, if you dare to place a SPECIAL order then you will see how "special" they really are. I placed an order for a shimmery blue ribbon that was out of stock to go on a bulletin board that I was working on before school began. Paid and waited a week, called to check the status and they had no record of it. I was told to wait a few more days and check back. I waited and decided to go over there and see where it was. I was told to follow the associate to the back where the lady searched around until she finally located the special order notebook in the break room on top of a refrigerator. At this point I knew something was wrong. I was told that I have to wait on a manager to call me back about why it still hadn't come in. Never received a call. Went in a second time and asked about the status and was told a manager had to help me get a refund and that I needed to come back again. Highly frustrated, I came back for a manager to give me a refund, but their computer system was acting up and they had to call the corporate office to fix the issue so that I could finally get a refund. Lots of time, money, and gas wasted fooling with these idiots for a stupid roll of ribbon. They were very unprofessional from the start so I should have known something was going to go wrong, along with their antiquated ordering /inventory system that clearly isn't being updated in real time. Huge red flag. I no longer shop here. I go to Michael's and Hobby Lobby. It's not worth the aggravation and the associates there are much nicer and more knowledgeable. My kids laugh every time we pass this store heading to Walmart as I have repeatedly expressed my dissatisfaction to them about my experience. My colleague also had a similar nightmare special order that was never delivered to their store in West Columbia. Order at your own risk! read more

I purchased fleece online one year for several tied blankets that I made for some nephews and a niece and it was fantastic. I purchased on Black Friday from my own kitchen table. Now there is a minimum of 3 yards per material! So if I were to make five blankets I have to purchase 10 extra yards of material to do it. I can see requiring a minimum of 3 yards total, but not per cutting! I don't shop on Black Friday any other way than online, I can't hack the crowds and the lines. So I was very pleased that first year but I have been so disappointed ever since. I've called, but to no avail. Probably every person who works for that store in any capacity knows that it takes 2 yards of material to make a nice size tied blanket, but they require that you buy 3. I am not pleased with Joann's. I have made 1 yard lap blankets, but I don't want to pay the money for the extra yard of fleece that I do not need. I am reviewing my online experience with Joann's, not a specific store. read more

Joann's in Columbia, MD lost me as a customer today. It is clear that their new store layout has written off the quilter. I went in today to pick up a packet of twin-size polyester batting for a quilting project. In the past, I knew exactly where to find it, and Joann's carried the brand I liked. Now the store has been rearranged, and I walked around for 20 minutes before finally finding batting tucked away in a corner at the back of the store - nowhere near the section with the wall tag "quilting". The section was only part of one small aisle, and it was a mess - hard to find anything. They had some new unrecognizable brand, which came in "small", "medium", and "large" - not the standard crib, twin, full, queen, king sizes of most other battings. Most of that aisle was filled with bags of polyfill for stuffing other projects. When you walk in, you no longer see fabrics in the center of the store - just lots of non-sewing junk for decorating or other types of projects. Maybe that's all that sells these days, but it's sad to lose the one store in Columbia that provided for the serious sewer. read more

I'm usually not a big box fabric store but today changed my mind at this store. I desperately needed 1/2" button covers for my daughters wedding dress but they weren't on the wall. I asked Paulette, the store manager I found out, if they had any in the back and she went on a big search for a small box. With true diligence she found them. Great experience on my trip to JoAnn today ! Much more selection than I'm used to at my local JoAnn. I had an employee ask me if I was finding everything okay and guide me to an aisle to find a keychain. The cashier was friendly and scanned my coupon then gave me more for next time! The store was VERY clean and in great shape ... Especially considering I came on a busy day. read more

This is the worst Jo-Ann I've ever been in. I went in to buy a Cricut for my wife. I couldn't find them in the store so I asked an employee where they were. They looked annoyed that I interrupted the employees' conversation. As she was walking me to where the Cricuts were located, she said, "You know you can't return them?" That was literally the only thing she said to me until we got to the Cricuts and I started asking questions. I asked her about the deal they were running on them and she said things like, "I think it includes this..." and "it might have this feature but I don't really know." It was extremely unhelpful. I eventually had to ask for someone that knew what they were talking about. The employee walked away and then came back and said she was the only one who knew anything. Being the crafty 24 year old that I am, I tend to want to go in here constantly. Last year I signed up for 7 sewing classes and out of the seven classes two were canceled at last minute and when I say last minute, I mean finding out after you have driven from DC to Columbia in an hour+ of traffic to only enter the store to find out that the teacher forgot she had a class. Maybe if they had better incentives for the teachers at Joann's then they would take the classes seriously and more customers would come to enjoy them. I have learned a lot however, certain teachers here are complete B****es. They think that you are supposed to remember and learn everything from the previous class and mock you in front of everyone or say out loud that you aren't ready for this course. I have never complained to the store, but since I have a larger audience and louder voice on YELP for all to "see," this will do much better. Do NOT COME here if you are highly interested in learning how to sew. They will either do it for you or tell you that you are not capable of learning. I laughed out loud at a specific teacher and told her that I have only worked on vintage singers and have NEVER worked on a new sewing machine made out of plastic. At the fashion school I went to (The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC) they only had singers from the 1900's as well. Therefore, B****, please. I have made my point. I am here to learn and recap old memory loss so I can make cute little things for myself, not go into a wholesale Etsy shop. read more

Went there to buy some fabric for a pillow case. Found a nice one on the clearance rack. Original price was like $12 a yard. Paid full price, despite pointing out it was on the clearance rack. And since it was "clearance" they wouldn't accept a % off coupon. The associate at the fabric counter also rung up the fabric wrong, which I had to point out and waited for a manager to override the mistake. Waste of time and money. read more

I've been here three times and did not really get a good experience. Workers at this place are unfriendly and stingy with their fabrics and do not give you an extra allowance just in case they cut the fabric short, which they always do. One big lady with short hair would rather waste the fabric and throw it away instead of just giving it to you as extra since it was not cut straight anyway. Another experience I had was when she was cutting the fabric and I tried to put my hand on the fabric so she could cut a straight line but was told that I am not allowed to do such a thing. The other Joann store is 30 min away from me but it is way friendlier than this one. Hancock fabrics is a good fabric store I go to now. read more

Don't base your shopping at this location on just one person's bad experience. I personally shop there at least three times a week for craft items, etc. I find that the sales staff are very friendly and are always willing to help in any way, just ask. Most times they ask if they can help you. Yes, they have expensive sewing machines, but they also have inexpensive ones too. The ladies that show the sewing machines are capable of showing you any of the models you would like to see, However, of course they like the higher quality machines, who wouldn't? Go in several times, get to know the staff in any parts of the store and you will see for yourself, it will be much better if you go in, with a good attitude to begin with yourself, try it, I bet it will work! read more

This is the worst customer service I have experienced. I went in to buy 6 yards of fabric. Was there with my husband and granddaughter. I went to the cutting area and the woman(manager in charge) proceeded to measure the fabric. However, when she went to the other side the fabric moved off the cutting slot. I put my hand on the fabric to let it stay there and so it wouldn't slide. She yelled at me and told me that everytime I put my hand on the fabric she would have to recount. I showed her that the side was very uneven and would she put it past the metal cutting (give an inch) to compensate the uneven ends.... she got an attitude and proceeded to cut off the uneven ends with quite an attitude. My husband finally spoke up and said" why are you putting up with this, lets go" which I did, much to my granddaughters dismay, since we just spent 1 hour picking out the correct matching fabrics to make her an outfit! read more
