My people...don't judge this place by the way it looks, o! I've driven past Rahama Ghanaian Restaurant plenty of times, and heard about it's food, I finally thought, "Let me go and see for myself." Now, when you walk inside...hmmm. Don't come looking for fine dining. The place is old, worn, and very simple. It's giving neighborhood carryout with a few round and square tables instead of a fancy restaurant. The décor has definitely seen better days. But let me tell you something...the crowd doesn't lie. I came around lunch time on a Thursday, and there were about 15 people inside. For a small mom-and-pop restaurant, that's saying something. Good food will always bring people back. When I went to order, I told the lady at the counter, "I heard the food is good, but the reviews I read says the service is slow." Ei! She laughed and said, "Who said that?" Then she pointed around the restaurant and reminded me how busy they were. The auntie wasn't having it! She was friendly, playful, and very welcoming. I ordered the Fufu with Okra Soup (#6) and the Fish with Jollof Rice (#7), swapping the banku for jollof. Now tell me why my food came out in about 15 minutes! As she handed me my order, she looked at me with that little smile like, "So...where is that slow service now?" Chale, she got me. I couldn't even argue back. My experience was the complete opposite of what I had read in the Yelp reviews. As for the food...ahhh, now we're talking! Both dishes were delicious. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. It had some pepper, but not the kind that will make you start crying and looking for water everywhere. Just enough heat to enjoy the flavor. The portions were generous too, and the prices? Very reasonable... So no, you won't come here for the décor. You come because Auntie is back there cooking with love. Sometimes the places that don't look like much serve the best food. I'm giving this place 3 stars because of the banku. I asked for banku, fried fish, shitto and pepper sauce. I ordered via DoorDash. Once I received my order, I was unhappy, mainly because the shitto was so small, which they've put in an onion sauce that seemed to have a dash of hot pepper. Oh, and it was cold as well, like it was in a fridge and not freshly made. The secondly reason for the 3 stars, the fish. It was so tiny and over fried, I was so angry, but also hungry, oh and it was dipped in floor before they fried it. In other words, I enjoyed some but not everything. read more

I want so badly to give this review more stars. Unfortunately, there were a few things that could be improved on. I called in an order and was told that my order would be ready in 10 minutes: I was on the highway so it wasn't a problem. When I arrived at the restaurant 15 minutes later, there was a line of people waiting to place orders and another line of people waiting to pick up orders. A delivery person that was waiting pointed out to me that if I hadn't placed an order yet I could use the kiosk that was in the restaurant, that was pretty cool. Another customer mentioned to me that on the weekend being cramped and busy is normal. I asked the woman taking orders if my call-in order was ready and she said something quick that I didn't hear and rush to the back. I finally got her full attention after waiting a few minutes and she answered that it was being made (after being there 25 minutes). Fortunately, there are chairs and tables where you can sit to wait or eat. Once my number was called I paid for my order and was on my way (40 minutes after calling in my order). I was very excited that after my 45 minute drive home, my food was still nice and hot! My red red was the consistency I like and though the spice level was mild (I should have asked for it tp be a little spicer, however, this was good for my first time trying theirs) and the fish was seasoned great as well. The plantain had a nice burn on it however, it was very mushy. Thankfully the food is served in aluminum carryout tins that are going to be great for reheating my food! There's something nostalgic for me about being at Rahama that takes me back to Ghana. Perhaps it's the service that feels like a welcome home from that one aunt or uncle that you just know us going to have something to say or maybe it's the smell of ginger and spices that greet you the moment you approach the door. What is undeniable is this: you wont find Ghanaian food at this quality and taste anywhere else in the DMV. Theres so much range in the food offerings that it would be a disservice to come here and just order jollof. I have ordered from this restaurant more times than I'm proud to admit, ordering out of sheer convenience. But there is nothing convenient about this place. In actuality, it's the exact opposite. Each time, I either place my order and pay online directly from the website or place my order over the phone. Even after placing your order ahead of time, you will arrive at the restaurant only to wait again for a minimum of 30 minutes to retrieve your food, for a simple rice and chicken dish. In addition to the long wait times, you will deal with rude and unprofessional staff. Not only is the service poor, you may even experience incomplete or incorrect orders. It got to the point where I had to ask myself, why do I continue to patronage this business only to leave with headache every time? Never again. read more

Ordered and picked up Red Red . The food was full of uncooked palm oil. And you used too much , it took over the food. I could taste the residual palm oil In my mouth The fish tasted old I became nauseous immediately after eating and vomited all my food. If you continue taking shortcuts you will lose your customers. I've had food from the other two Rahama locations in VA and this location in MD is just as good. Ordered the usual favorite, jollof rice with fried chicken. The rice portion is huge, enough for two people and tasty. The fried chicken was good, but could've used a little more seasoning, but that was easily fixed with the shito sauce. My husband enjoyed their beef (with jollof). Their jollof rice is sooo good, will definitely order from them again in the future. read more

Hubby and I were feeling adventurous today. So stopped by this Westst African restaurant. I am originally from West Africa and enjoy discovering new dishes. We ordered the boiled yam with palaver sauce. Service was not fast, we waited for a while hubby was getting impatient... Some African dishes take time, but the result most of the time is mouth watering. I didn't like the palaver sauce, but I loved the boiled yam and the natural juice is a good immunity booster. Service sucked really bad, we waited 45 min for someone to come out from the back to take our order. And waited another 50 for food to come out only to be the wrong order there were 5 people waiting for their food dashers waiting for their orders. I ordered a uber eats delivery for lunch- spicy khebob and waakye and I was extremely disappointed with the meal. The food arrived literally luke warm to cold other parts. I requested for plastic plates and knifes which weren't delivered either. I had to call to vent out my frustration after receiving such a meal; and tipping on top of it; only to be disappointed. I was really trying to support the restaurant. Unfortunately, I was informed that they didn't have plastic plates nor knives.... really? Then when asking - why my food was barely warm; I was informed that it was cooked and kept on hot pots??? So that should stop me from getting freshly made dishes and hot as expected??? My fried fish AGAIN was full of scales. This is the second time I have reported this problem. Now I realize this is how they fry their fish at this location (Silver Springs, Maryland). Now, this place could have easily been a five but i will outline the pro's and cons and why it hits that 3-3.5 Range. Pro's- Food items compared to many of their competitors are anywhere from $3-$8 cheaper, trust me that adds up if you order multiple items as i typically do. Now, within this second pro is a con lol, they have an online ordering system which i utilized for pick up, i still had to wait close to an hr after placing said orders the day before lol. Check your order by all means please do, because i had some missing items, wrong items etc. Food as stated i ordered multiple items the Tuo Zaafi (TZ) was absolutely delicious as expected, the plantain and beans was good. Next time will ask if plantains be ripper. I ordered waakye for a friend he raved about it. Con's- Mentioned some earlier, the fufu and groundnut soup i wasn't a fan, Felt like there wasn't a lot of groundnut, way too much oil, and the chicken tasted like it was either fried or stewed and tossed in the soup. Not ordering the groundnut soup again. The packaging had some oil on some of the boxes, not the neatest. The lies my review, clearly i will go there again since you cant beat the $$$. read more

Im happy to finally see that they opened a Maryland location! I normally drive to Virginia just to dine with them. They have the most authentic food close to what you an get in Ghana. I have been waiting on this opening for a while! This new location is located in a shopping center and can easily be missed. Food: i ordered waakye (rice and beans) this was served with tomato based sauce with beef and fish, spaghetti, and gari (dried yuca) and spicy shito (black pepper sauce) and one hardboiled egg. You also ha e an option to get it vegan with no meat. Peanut soup and omotuo: feels like im eating this meal in Ghana. The taste is so similar i love it. The taste is as close to their location in Virginia but not all the way there yet. It needs a bit of tweaking to have the same taste as their Woodbridge location. Their plates are shareable enough for two. I ordered for carryout this day. The service is great and taked about 15 minutes after an order is placed depending on what the order is. It gets pretty crowded so order in advance if taking out. They have an extensive menu and im excited to try more things next time. Since this is their new location im giving them more time to adjust but hopefully the taste improves like the Virginia one Ample parking available. read more

Authentic Great place GREAT PRICE great Taste!!! I've only been to the VA location near Potomac Mills. I stop there every time I'm heading to southern Va and on the at back up to DC. I tend to buy food for the week since the prices are so reasonable and the food is so good. ALSO - the staff is patient and kind. They don't rush you and they are ready to answer questions about dishes if you have any. Customer Service goes a long way. So this is a completely noob review because I think I've had Ghanaian food only one other time in my life, so I'm not certain what it's "supposed" to taste like. Here goes: The chicken was cut like it is at authentic Chinese spots, where you're not exactly sure what part of the chicken it is because it seems like they just hacked it up with a meat cleaver, battered it, then fried it to mouth watering and seasoned perfection. The rice was scrumptiously soft, moist but not wet. It tasted like rice that had been stewed in a tomato type sauce, kind of like jambalaya. The beef patty it came with was ICE cold (which made no sense) and def was a sign some foods there aren't made fresh. Got Spinach and Banku instead. :( Spinach taste like it was burnt and had a undesirable smoke flavor that I have never tasted in any of the spinach stews I have tasted and I have had my share. I have yet to have a meal I truly enjoyed from this establishment but I have been going back and trying something new, hoping for something great. Unfortunately, this meal goes is the books of "No Thank You" for not only being the wrong thing delivered but for it also having the burnt flavor. I knew not to order Spinach that from Rahama and now I remember why. Ordered here twice and the food is pretty good especially the peanut butter soup, but customer service is lacking terribly. If you dare ask a question about the food or dishes the woman who takes orders acts annoyed as if you're a peasant for asking. Mind you I ask due to my food allergy.
