Amazing cheese!!!!! I highly recommend Joe Matos cheese. Very quickly delivery or you can pick up at the farm.

The Cheese stands alone
Jeremy R.

The cheese may stand alone, but not for long. Once your friends or family find out how delicious this cheese is it will be hard to get any one-on-one quality time with it. The farm/cheese shop is definitely a small family-run operation. The cheeses, original or aged, are spectacular, firm and slightly creamy with a rich grassy flavor. Don't tell them I said so, but they are a steal at $8/pound. So next time your cruising the backroads of Sonoma County and you see a sign for cheese, you would be wise to stop in and grab some.

I will use the words "rustic" and "authentic" to describe this working farm visit. Don't expect anything fancy, because it is decidedly not. The cheese is amazing though!

Farm cat protecting our car while we were inside

I drove 2 hours to to this place and it didn't disappoint once we arrived!Other posts talk about how small this place and they aren't kidding! Its a cool family owned farm-cheese factory out in the middle of no where,in part this is what helps make this place great. As we pulled in to what looked like a tiny office area we were greeted by the sweetest cat you can imagine, after a quick interaction I went inside and a nice lady came from the back offered us samples of 3 different aged cheeses 3 months,9 months and 16 months! All 3 were tremendous!I purchased 1 chunk of each for a grand total of 10 dollars, wow what a bargain! After that my wife and I headed to bodega bay where we picked up clam chowder French bread and some meat,it was a great little outing for us.I would recommend this place to adventurous people,as this cheese factory has no parking lot and is off the beaten path for sure.

The barn

My sister said she found a cheese factory... and this off-the-paved-road trip was definitely very fun and different. You pretty much follow the signs and drive across a dirt road for a little bit into the farm area where they have tractors and a big barn. Look for the "open" sign on one of the side door, after you pass the ducks and cows. (Yup, there are cows right behind a fence, so you can pretty much go up to then to take a gander. Note: these cows stare hard. They are pretty interested in you, and posed for some selfies with me.) The ducks are in this pond, and there are even signs saying ducks are for sale. The shop itself is tiny, way smaller than I thought. There is an adorable mexican lady that helped us. We were at first unsure of what to do, and then she presented us with some cheese samples! St Jorge cheese. Delightful. We ended up getting just a quarter of a pound of the cheese and it was a little over $4. Delicious, and has this amazing slight bitterness to it. Super fresh, definitely recommend this to be a stop off the beaten path!

Curious cow

Well I made my way over to Matos today, thru the various farms & pastures in rural Santa Rosa. The cheese rounds, made the old fashioned way can be seen on the shelves aging behind the very simple sales counter. Two choices were available, I was offered generous samples of both. St. George cheeses, one 2 months aged, the other and very flavorful aged 8 months. $9.00 and $13 per pound respectively. These are old world style cheeses, hand made from their own cows, who reside on property! In business since 1979, this is an authentic farm and factory. It's not fancy, it's very basic, but it 's worth the drive over to see where your food comes from. Note: Cash or check only, no credit cards at this little gem.

I've been going here for years now and they are the nicest most wonderful people who give good tours and have wonderful silly and snuggly baby goats! They give you real time with them and don't have a forced amount of time on each part of the tour - unlike Harley goat farm. You can skip the tour and just hung with the baby goats the whole time if you want! Also can come early or stay late depending on when if there's another tour that day. I get enough time with the baby goats - and I loooove baby goats so that's saying something! Bring a meal if you want to eat and hangout at their picnic tables. I've gotten to milk the goats a few times, feed the adults, be there for a goat birth (just happened while on the tour!), and have all the baby goat snuggles and silliness. Love the family farm, love the folks who run the baby goat tours/visits. Also a cute town to go into after for food, beverage, also wine tastings nearby. I recommend a second set of clothes to change into after in case you get dirty (goats are relatively clean, but they're goats so not like indoor pets. I let the baby goats climb all over me.)

We are a family of six, including three generations - all of which thoroughly enjoyed the tour! We…read morecuddled baby goats, fed their mothers and learned about goat farming along the way. The farm is beautiful and Jennifer is a great guide. Highly recommended!

So as we were making our way home from Windsor,my buddy told me about this deli that was described…read moreby some as the most authentic deli in the area, which is saying a lot considering how close we were to "wine country" So we decided to stop and at first glance from the outside it doesn't seem like much but once you walk in,you get that feel that your meal is about to be spectacular. The place had all the feels of an authentic Italian deli-I could not wait to get my hands on one of these sandwiches. I was torn between going with my usual at any Italian deli which is just a classic Italian but for some reason,I've been on a tri-tip vibe for a while and I saw they had BBQ tri-tip on the menu so I just went with that-I added pepper jack to my sandwich.($17.94) It wasn't very busy when we ordered so the food didn't take long, maybe a 6 or 7 minute wait and our food was in front of us. This deli is interesting in that they do a lot of stuff in-house including homemade chips and we had some-so tasty-great addition to our meal. They also have a pretty extensive freezer section with homemade pastas and sauces that a customer can take home to prepare at a later date. So let's talk about the BBQ tri-tip sandwich. It's always wonderful when you run into a small business that just truly excels at their craft and I feel Canevari Deli is one of those places. They made this sandwich so well, excellent balance of meat, cheese, bread and condiments. It was a job well done. I'm having really good luck lately of finding amazing restaurants that are out of town and unfortunately Canevaris is one of those places-this is the type of place that if it was near me I would go there every week, the people who live in Santa Rosa are quite lucky to have such a great deli so close to them daily. In closing ,if you find yourself in the Santa Rosa area and you want to help support a true local business, stop by Canevaris and enjoy yourself one of their daily offerings-I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience.

Updating my review since the venue change to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds: as I mentioned I have…read morebeen attending this event every year since 2011! I really like the larger Sonoma County Fairgrounds space (and appreciate that parking is included), which is airy and has plenty of room for all of the vendors. I bring my own plate and stemmed wine glass every year so I can quickly pile up the cheese and enjoy it while walking around planning what I want to try next. All of the vendors are so kind and truly enjoy talking about their products. Some of my favorite cheese vendors are Beehive, Laura Chenel, and Marin French. Some of my favorite alcohol vendors are Barber Lee, Griffo Distillery, and Gowan Cider. This year I was excited that my favorite ice cream place De la Creamery was there, and I loved pairing my Mexican Chocolate ice cream with bourbon from Barber Lee.

He loves cheese as well so we thought to make it a weekend trip to Sonoma and Santa Rosa and attend these events. The food pairing with wine at Kendal Jackson was amazing, the cheese crawl was somewhat enjoyable at the Barlow but the marketplace on Sunday was a disaster. For over an hourwe were there the lines at the cheese stations were packed. You couldn't move around or enjoy anything cause there were so many people. To have a tiny slice of cheese you had to wait at least 10 mins in line. One line after another.... Most places didn't offer any crackers or bread so imagine eating pieces of cheese without any pairings. After a few stops I was feeling nausea already. I couldn't enjoy anything so my husband and I left very disappointed. I did purchase a few cheeses, jams, honey and spices. Probably that was the best part about this event. Maybe I had very high expectations reading about the festival and getting too excited for it. But seriously it was not worth taking a trip from LA. At least we were able to enjoy our time at the wineries and a short hike at Armstrong Redwood Park.
