I stumbled across Sonoma County Meat by accident. I don't see many of school butchers these days, so I stopped in for a look. Oh what a look it gave! They have piles of premium cuts of meat for sale. Pork chops, hamburger, bacon, steaks, and more! I didn't have a cooler with me, so I opted for some beef sticks and jerky. All were delicious, but the jerky had a great texture and smokey flavor that I really enjoyed. The employees were great and scrambled to serve a small line of customers. We have been purchasing Sonoma County 4H Fair Hogs for 15+ years. There is a limited number of butchers the fair sends them to for processing. Sure, we have tried this butcher and that butcher, but never was never quite pleased for a multitude of reasons. The number one reason being for dissatisfaction with the previous butchers was that the butcher was skimming off the top and we were not getting the cuts we should have - they were saving those cuts for their retail customers and giving us crap. The other reason, a local well-known butcher did not think we would notice the difference in meat between a well-raised 4H hog and substituted an old sow passing it off as 4H Sonoma County Fair meat - saving (or should I state stealing) my savory 4H pork for their retail counter. Enter Sonoma County Meat Company. We FINALLY have the quality cuts AND the hogs we actually bid on at the fair - no skimming off the top to sell retail and/or leaving us tough and gristly sow cuts. There is NO comparison to other butchers. Sure, it may cost a few extra bucks but the quality is worth it. Plus, the place is clean as a whistle. It's just that good, which justifies the price point. Most recently we had the Oak Ridge Angus Prime Rib and it was amazing! I made it myself, I'm no chef and it still rivaled the House of Prime Rib in SF or any other cut we've had anywhere. Generally, I do not give out five stars easily, and I rarely give a five star review to a business after only one visit. Sonoma County Meat Co. is the rare exception. Real butcher shops are hard to find these days. Most of us buy our meats from the grocery store, or if you need to buy in bulk, Costco. Grocery store meats are mediocre at best. Costco meat is okay and inexpensive. Meat purchased from a real butcher is in an entirely different category. When you walk into Sonoma County Meat Co, you immediately smell the difference. You smell the meat, not the canned, sterile air of the grocery or big box store. There is the slightly spoiled smell (in the best possible sense) of the dry aged steaks, and the delicious herbal smell of the cured meats and sausages. The smell itself is intoxicating. Then there is the visual. The meat case shows the best of the butcher's art. There are dry aged steaks, marinated steaks, beautiful pork chops, sausages, meat sticks, and more, more, more. The day I came in there were two people working in the store front. Both of them looked like butchers with their blood smeared aprons and healthy smiles. Rib eye, for me, is the king of steaks. That is what I wanted. The very helpful and courteous staff pointed me to the dry aged rib eye and a cowboy steak. Both very special cuts that I passed on because I don't think my current grill set up could do them justice. I opted for the regular rib eye. I also got some pepperoni sticks for snacking. When I got home, I fired up the grill, seasoned the steak (just a bit of salt and pepper), and opened the wrapper. Oh, the beauty of that meat. Once the grill was about as hot as I could get it, I put the steak on. With just the salt and pepper seasoning, I have to say it was one of the most satisfying steaks I have eaten in a long time. The fat content was perfect. The meat was tender and rich. The pepperoni sticks were also very good. I am snacking on them as I go. I can't wait for my next visit to Sonoma County Meat Co. I love going to Germany. Specifically Bavaria. I particularly like going during Oktoberfest and when I'm there, I always order a dish called Schweinshaxe. This roughly translates as "Pork knuckle". It's a cut of pork that's basically the lower leg, right above the hoof. It's slowly roasted for about 4 hours with the skin on which results in a super tender meat under a crispy skin. It's very hard to find over here and Sonoma County Meat Co is pretty much the only place where I can get it regularly! All their meat is fresh and high quality. The staff is friendly and helpful. Limited hours (for some reason I always think to make this particular dish on a Sunday when they're closed) and higher prices made me consider dropping them by a star, but ultimately if you plan ahead and expect to pay a premium price for a premium product, it's hard to find fault with them. read more
