There was a miscommunication on the price, and when I tried to work with the owner in good faith to find a fair compromise, he accused me of lying and trying to cheat him. His crew worked hard and did a great job, but the owner's unprofessional behavior made the entire experience negative. Many things went right- the trees were nicely trimmed, but I'll still need another tree trimmer to do another pass. They removed 3 large trees and that was all handled well- especially a 35 foot tree that came down in the Jan wind storms. A plus- the crew was not on their phones while working. My concerns come from 3 items: 1. Just after the fires it was very toxic- I offered the crew N95 masks and none would wear them. I understand that I cannot make them do it, but their management could have required PPE. They were raking, blowing, carrying and grinding with no masks and making huge dust storms. 2. The stump grinder was in the shop and I wasn't told until late in the day. 3. When they finally came back to grind 3 stumps, they cleaned up 2, and just raked the equivalent of 8 green bins of sawdust all over my back yard like mulch, BUT that tree was killed by a fungus, SO that's now spread all over my yard and could kill what's left there or future trees. They knew this was how the tree died. I'm a senior and the price I paid was a month take home pay. I'm still slowly cleaning up debris and sawdust they left for me when I was at work on the day they came back to grind. Our contract said "remove and clean up." So, in the end maybe for brut removals. But you will have to be on them to clean up, and knowing also they don't seem very mindful of giving the entire crew emphysema. read more

We had a 40-50 foot palm tree fall in a storm last year that we needed removed. We also have a 60-70 foot palm tree that was in desperate need of a trim. I solicited bids on yelp. Joel's Tree Service was one of the first ones to respond. I scheduled a visit with Joel, so he could assess the situation and give me a proper bid. (As opposed to the company that gave me a bid for double the price, site unseen.) Based on the other bids I received, I thought Joel's was the best. We scheduled the work for the following week. The tree wasn't in our way, so we weren't in a rush. I received a confirmation text from Joel in advance of his arrival. Joel and his crew showed up on time and got right to work. It was an eight hour job! The tree trimming was first. I don't envy the guy who shimmies up the side of the tree, but he was fun to watch! The removal of the fallen tree was also fascinating to watch, the way they went about cutting and removing pieces of stump that weighed hundreds and hundreds of pounds. The crew also cleaned up so well, you could hardly tell they were there. In sum, I think I made the right choice. We had an extremely positive experience working with Joel's Tree Service. We had a huge, overgrown tree on our property that needed pruning, another tree with an invasive vine growing in it that had spread across our backyard, and several tree branches hanging over into our property from our neighbor's trees that needed to be cut. When I contacted Joel's Tree Service they were very quick in responding and coming out to give us an estimate. The estimate was extremely fair for all of the work that needed to be done. We even decided to have them clean up our backyard and front lawn as well because their pricing was so reasonable. Manny was very personable, and his team were quick and efficient. They did an amazing amount of work in a short amount of time. Our large tree was beautifully pruned, the other tree was removed from our property along with the invasive vines, and our neighbor's branches were neatly cut back to the property line. Our front and back lawns were cleaned up and the new growth on a problematic tree stump was removed. Our backyard hasn't looked this good in a very long time. Very disappointed in my experience. We had two very large palm trees that needed removal. One was in our driveway, the other in a tight spot in our backyard. We were quoted $5,000, which was more or less on par with other quotes we'd received - but their strong reviews and responsiveness tipped us towards choosing Joel's. Everything leading up to the tree trimming, and even the trimming itself was smooth, but we have two major issues with how the site was left. Our concrete driveway was ruined - the impact from falling tree trunks pounded the cement, cracking and breaking the concrete in multiple places. At no point were we warned that this might be an outcome - it was a complete afterthought, mildly acknowledged while they were packing up on their last day. We now have to figure out whether we want to spend the money to have this repaired, or redo our driveway entirely - something we would have chosen to time differently had we known what to expect. The other palm tree in the backyard was in an awkward spot, but we were assured that although they wouldn't be able to remove the trunk entirely, it would be ground down to the floor so that whatever remained could be covered with mulch. Again, I've included a photo of how the trunk was left - easily 9 full inches above the ground. Covering it with mulch in it's current state would leave a pretty silly looking pile, nowhere near level. Again, we were informed after the fact that the access to the backyard was too tight, and they couldn't get the correct equipment to properly grind down the stump. We made it pretty clear that we were unhappy with how things were left, and the response amounted to a shoulder shrug. For a company with this much experience, and positive reviews, I have a hard time understanding how they lacked the foresight to properly manage our expectations. Maybe some of this was inevitable, or out of their control, but I would have like to have all the information ahead of time, so I could then decide how best to proceed. Instead, I'm stuck having to find another set of handymen and experts who can finish the job properly. It's incredibly frustrating, and I would hate for others to find themselves in this situation. read more

Joel's is awesome! I have a HUGE pepper tree that needed trimming. It was all up in power lines and also looming over our house. Manny came and gave me a very fair bid. He also noticed the succulent garden my daughter has been cultivating underneath the tree. He commented on how he could protect it. That sealed the deal for me.
