We received multiple tree quotes and various vendors come out to look at our trees. Our property is not easy as it is on a hill with neighbors who live below our massive trees. Buck was the most knowledgeable out of all the vendors with the most reasonable pricing. The group showed up on time, took care to not damage our newly planted fruit trees or our neighbor's property, and cleaned up our whole yard and street before they left. They are fully insured (which is rare) and provided the right expertise to cut the various species of trees on our property correctly. OMG! Buck is the Best. At first I was not sure as I had a better price from a competitor but when they were writing up the job quickly became more as they were going to add extra for travel, dump fees and so forth. When I looked at HTS's quote, they had it all and they were clear that was my final price. HTS was fantastic getting everything planned and helping me with my HOA landscape architectural summital. A full yard re-do is a big job, especially when having to deal with a my HOA. My expectations were that no matter who did the job, I would get stuck with problems either with the association, neighbors, or whatever. Buck was excellent all the way around and was so good to get the job done quick and orderly. Nothing broken, no complaints, or fines from the HOA :-). It was the quickest of any of may neighbors to get a job done from Planning to implementation. I was sure that the two new Giant Bird of Paradise Trees that needed a crane to move to my rear yard would be a problem - It wasn't . When they finished, everything was neat and clean. Hollywood Tree Service has been an LA institution since the 1950's! Growing up in LA, my parents always used Hollywood Tree Service. The owner, Louie, is a fantastic guy. He would always show up with a smile and his crew was fanatical about trimming our trees. Years later, when I bought my first house, I too called on Hollywood Tree Service to come out and take care of my trees. Louie has since retired, but his son Buck was just as great and made sure our trees looked amazing. Truly money well spent. I highly recommend them - they might not be the cheapest guys out there, but they are friendly, been around forever, know exactly what they are doing, are insured and won't leave until you are fully satisfied with the job. I wish other businesses in LA would take a page out of their book. read more

In the past we've often had landscapers damage our sprinklers and didn't even mention it. But not this team. They are cautious and really good at what they do. When it was time to hire a new gardener for a rental property I own, I found Hollywood Tree Service while perusing landscaping services online. It's now been seven years since Buck and company have been maintaining my property. Aside from weekly upkeep, almost every year there has been the challenge of clearing a large hillside of extensive foliage growth. Due to the property being located in a fire zone, adjacent to Griffith Park, the LAFD requires compliance with clearance regulations and Buck always knows exactly what has to be done to pass inspection. Whatever job he and his crew are doing, they are experienced, certified and bonded. Recently it was necessary to cut down a large, mature ficus tree on the property. Hate cutting down trees, but it had to be done because the root system became extremely invasive. The tree was massive and tall, so it had to be cut branch by branch, section by section. Also the lower trunk was growing up against a fence which required extra care when cutting so as not to damage that fence. The outcome was amazing, tree gone, all portions of the trunk where hauled away and all residual debris, including sawdust, cleaned up. Buck knows his business, is reliable and easy to work with. I have used Buck and his crew as my weekly gardeners for over a year now, and I could not be happier with them. My yard, which has a lot of landscaping plants, looks great. They do a very thorough job and are very knowledgable about all the plants. Buck is easy to communicate with and is prompt in responding to phone calls/emails. He also does landscape design and irrigation. He converted my vegetable garden from spray irrigation to drip irrigation. He came up with a plant plan when I wanted to add more flowering shrubs to my front yard. He is honest and up front. I have been using Buck (McGaffee) and his company for close to a decade - but realized that I have never posted a Yelp review - only posted on Angie's List. So below is a slightly edited version of my Angie's review. I think it's worth mentioning how I originally found these guys. I had a major sprinkler system fail on the weekend - of the geyser-in-your-yard variety. My regular gardener at that point didn't deal with sprinklers. I chose Hollywood Tree based on their ad in the Yellow Pages, which seemed direct and not over-hyped. I called, and spoke to Buck directly - described the problem to him, and he gave me a rough estimate (which I no longer remember because it was so long ago). What I DO remember, is that he and his crew showed up in a few hours, fixed the problem, and then charged me LESS than what he quoted - because he said the job was simpler than he expected. After a few other specialty jobs, I decided to make Hollywood Tree my regular landscape maintenance and tree care guys. I use them for weekly lawn/yard care, but also for specialty jobs like pruning of my specimen-grade trees, irrigation installation and maintenance, landscape design, and landscape lighting - at which Buck has become a genuine expert. There is no question in my mind that they give great value-for-money (which is not the same as being the cheapest around). They are absolutely the best at ALL of this stuff that I have found in my 30 years of LA home ownership. Buck and his crew are dependable, CLEAN, show up on time, and go way past the mow-blow-go which is standard in their line of work, even on their regular weekly rounds. I am extremely detail-oriented (OK, very picky is more like it) - but I think Buck may be even pickier than I am! My yard has gone from being "very nice" to "wow-who does your landscaping?" nice. I have had people actually ring the bell and ask who I used. I like the fact that Buck has real expertise in many areas - but also knows when to call in a specialist (like building a masonry fountain), and he knows other craftsman of equal quality to himself. He's also a really nice guy with a great sense of humor - and if you're really lucky, maybe you'll get a couple of fresh eggs or tomatoes from his own garden. Two years ago I bought an apartment building in the San Fernando Valley that was dilapidated and had severely overgrown landscape. I figured I'd start with the yard since it was in the worst shape of everything and would yield the most noticeable improvement. I needed a full service tree trimmer with insurance. I called around for quotes but it seemed like the companies I interviewed were either very low-end or were high-end and gave me a ridiculously high quote and had bad attitudes. I found Hollywood Tree Service and couldn't have been happier with the whole process from start to finish. They came out and trimmed the whole yard for $1100.00. After they finished, you could hardly find any evidence of them being there except for the beautifully trimmed trees. All the leaves were raked up and sawdust was almost nowhere to be found. I was so pleased that I hired them for all the weekly maintenance which I pay $400.00 a month for. I even had them re-landscape a good portion of the property.
