At first I was a little lost finding the place since its behind a warehouse and we have to go thru a parking area to get there but it was worth it. The price was good. My car died several times over the course of a month and I realized that I probably needed a new battery. Joe's is in a kind of random location, near downtown Jersey City, but I am glad I came here. They ran tests to determine that the battery actually needed changing and then installed a new one. It took about 2 hours, and they called me when they were done. A plus of the location is that there are a bunch of restaurants/bars/coffee shops within walking distance so you can pass the time quickly. I didn't have an appointment and this didn't seem to be an issue, but you could probably call ahead to make sure there isn't a wait. I came in at a pretty random time (around 10:30 on a Tuesday) so I didn't expect it to be busy and it wasn't. Don't think you can wait there but as I mentioned, lots within a walking distance. A huge bonus was that the cost was a lot less than I would have paid at a car dealer. read more

I have a small commercial fleet in Bayonne ( 10 Vehicles, varying make and models) and Joe has been excellent!!! They actually FIND THE PROBLEM not just throw parts at it! I had a trouble vehicle that had been to another mechanic and two Ford dealerships with no repair. We brought it to Joe who accurately diagnosed a failing PCM and made the repair, no troubles since! They also give honest interpretations of results based on age/value of car vs. repair cost. Joe's Auto Electric is Excellent, Honest and Effective. You don't get much better than that. read more

I hate giving this review because this will only make getting my car fixed harder when I need it. I have been trying to keep this secret to myself for years but Joe's deserves all the success he receives. But here it goes anyway. Every time I go to Joe he does the job right and only does the work my car REALLY NEEDS and in the time he says it will be done. He is by far the most honest, fair and no non-sense mechanic in Jersey City...maybe in all of NJ. So now that you know...you know what to do if you're smart. FYI...that being said. Needing a mechanic, and relying upon the good review here, I went to Joe's and I can't rave it enough. They were fast, they were very thorough in their explanation of the problem and possible solutions. Just the service would be enough,but I was really happily surprised at the extremely reasonable price. I was very impressed with my first trip to Joe's. I needed an oil change and the mechanics diagnosed some other potential issues with my tires and alignment. Not only was it good to know this info for the future, but they also let me know about two other places in the area that would give more specialized service. I really appreciated the thoroughness and their honesty about what would be best for my vehicle. After patronizing the corporate giants in the area and getting poor service time and again, it's so nice to have a trustworthy spot! One thing I would appreciate is if they posted their hours on their website, or on their voicemail. This would be helpful info for after hours. read more

I needed an oil change plus a few tweaks here and there to my car (windshield wipers, etc.) and they delivered with no fuss, quite cheap. The one snag was, online hours show they open at 8, but they open at 9, and I showed up to pick up my car at 830. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, no one came to open the shop until 945, so I was waiting outside for a very long time in the cold. They did, however, attempt to remedy the situation by providing the new hubcaps I'd needed for free, which was very kind of them! read more

My experience with Joe's Electric today was not good. My new-to-me car suddenly died yesterday while driving in Jersey City. AAA came and tested the battery. It was fully charged and the car surprisingly started. Knowing there was something wrong with the car, I drove it to Joe's Electric (based on Yelp reviews I used Joe's Electric once before and they were OK that time, at least I thought they were. Now I'm not so sure). Upon arrival, I gave the male receptionist the print out of AAA's draw test that showed a full charge on my battery. He thanked me for it and told me someone would call me today. This morning a man who said he was Joe called me to tell me that I needed a new alternator and a new battery. Knowing I couldn't have driven the car to his shop if the alternator and battery were bad, I asked Joe if he had run a diagnostic and he replied, 'Yeah, a charging system in the circuit'. That sounded so silly to me that I asked him to repeat it. Joe repeated, 'A charging system in the circuit, you know, the test.' Smiling, I asked him how he does a 'charging system in the circuit' test and he replied, 'with a test light meter'. What he said sounded to me like a made-up story so I called the manufacturer for help. It turns out my car was recalled for the same problem I brought it to Joe's Electric to fix: the car had a bad sensor. I then spoke with a mechanic at the dealer I chose. I was told if a car starts fine and it drives fine, and the battery has a full charge, the problem is not the battery or the alternator. Additionally, a proper diagnostic procedure would involve attaching a diagnostic tool to the car's computer and the computer will tell the mechanic what's wrong with the car. Being that Joe's had no diagnostic results for my car and because he misdiagnosed the cause of my car's problem, I believe he didn't perform proper diagnostics on my car. After learning this, I returned to Joe's Electric and asked for my car back. The only person there was the same man who acts as receptionist. He returned my battery to my car, got in, and promptly drove it out of the garage. He couldn't have driven it if the battery and alternator were bad could he? He told me there was no charge. I had to laugh at that. To summarize, I believe Joe's Electric ignored printed diagnostics by reputable AAA and I believe Joe was telling me a story when he said he preformed diagnostics on my car. If Joe had his computer results to show me, I would have believed him, however, he didn't, and he was saying things that didn't make sense to me. The car was driving fine-it had simply shut off unexpectedly, and the car was being recalled for a bad sensor which the manufacturer says is the cause of that problem. Because of these things, I believe Joe's is no longer the place for me to bring my car to for repairs. P.S. In response to Joe's response to this Yelp review that my battery worked because he charged it, that substantiates my belief that my battery did not need replacing. If he charged it, it was still a good battery, wasn't it? I've updated this review to reflect that the person acting as receptionist is male. read more

I came back here for an oil change, and they were fair, fast and courteous. I have found a new mechanic for my car!!!

Joe's did an adequate job diagnosing my car, with 3 blown outlets in the rear. They gave me an approx price to fix it at $200. Received a call later indicating each blown outlet cost $90 and the price of repair in total would now be $400+. I declined the service and brought the car to my regular mechanic. My mechanic did the job in total for $100, as he priced each outlet at $10 (not 90). Ironically, it cost me $100 to fix at my mechanic, and I was charged $90 from Joe's just for the diagnostic, with no repairs. Not the best money I've ever spent. read more

I had a dead battery, and showed up on a Saturday morning 5 minutes before closing, expecting to leave my car for a few days or to simply be told to come back Monday. In 15 minutes I was on my way with a new battery and my electronics diagnosed. It was reasonably priced, and the service was friendly and thorough. I would heartily recommend them to anyone. I dont do reviews but had to do this one. Had problems with my car, a couple of guys including myself "tried to fix" them but to no avil,lots of parts were changed. This is a long overdue review. Once my car's battery died, I called Joe's based on the great reviews on Yelp. Joe drove over to my condo shortly, and after diagnosing the issue he informed me that I had to take my car to the dealer since a password reset needed to be done, and he can't do it. We tried to give him $20 for his troubles, but he wouldn't take the money. For this reason I would always take my car to his shop for service =]. I've been a loyal Joe's customer since moving to Jersey City. Joe is an honest guy. My car had a hard to diagnose battery drain somewhere. Joe replaced my battery and looked for a short circuit for me--couldn't find one. Two weeks later, the new battery died and Joe sent a mechanic over to jump my car so we could drive it to his shop and get the battery replaced--for free. A month or so later, car battery died again while parked on the street, again, Joe's came over to save me from a parking ticket. I always go to Joe for my oil changes. He's not the cheapest, but he takes responsibility for his work and treats his customers right. read more

These guys are fantastic! Brought my car in for a power-steering-fluid leak and a broken hood latch. Dropped it off on my way to work, they called me back within 5 hours and told me what was wrong. The leak went away and they fixed the latch (it was stuck). NO CHARGE! They very easily could have completely ripped me off. These guys are honest, nice, and efficient. I highly recommend Joe's for repairs and maintenance. They are the most honest shop I know and Joe and his mechanics have been there for years and are very experienced. I have brought my Jeep here for over 10 years and my new Audi for 5 years. One example from some years ago is when a friend had been told by a different shop that her car needed a major exhaust replacement and Joe looked at it and found it only needed a minor repair. That's the type of guys they are and it is rare these days. The shop is not fancy and no frills so don't let that deter you from quality friendly service. read more

Dropped it off at about 11am today feeling cautiously optimistic based on good reviews we'd read. We had a very weird problem with the car and couldn't figure it out on our own, so we figured it would cost us a lot of time or money or both. Got a phone call at about 12:30pm saying that the problem was found and solved and we could pick the car back up. It's entirely fixed, and it cost so much less than we expected. These mechanics are smart, friendly, and above all - FAIR! They will not upsell you on stuff you don't need, and will take the time to explain wear & tear they notice and how long until you will need to fix it so that you can plan and budget your future repairs accordingly. Their oil change is about $35, but they check everything, fill all fluids, and rotate tires, and do an undercarriage inspection - very thorough compared to the Pep Boys oil change specials. They are fast, too. They do not talk down to women, and will answer all your questions, and even look at the car's recommended repair and service per mileage recommendations to help you plan what you need and tell you what you don't need. If you are a person who wants to understand your car and its repairs & budget for them, then these guys are great and will work with you save money and do it as safely and cheaply as possible. They are also fine with just fixing it and letting you be on your way too if you are not the inquisitive type. :) read more
