A good old fashioned haircut is hard to find. Every time I move to a new city, I dread the inevitable series of bad haircuts it seems I must endure as I find the right barber. Moving to Portland was no different, but fortunately I found Joe after only one personal-worst, disastrous haircut at another popular, beer-serving local place. After some necessary regrowth and time, I tried out Joe. I relayed my story and he was honest about how long it would take to fully recover from my bad haircut. I told Joe what I wanted - #2 taper on sides with lower follow up #1 taper, cut the top short enough that it doesn't stand up since my hair is pin straight. Pretty standard cut for men. Think Craig Ferguson when he's not trying to do the too-short, or bed head look. Well, Joe did a great job the first time and I've been going to him ever since. I've been getting cuts from Joe every month now for over a year so I wanted to update my comments just to say that Joe is the real deal. I looked for the right place in the Portland area for 20 years and never really found the right combination of professional. First of all, Joe will remember you. He remembers your cut and he remembers what you talked about last time, and the conversation continues. It's thoroughly good. Second, he's got amazing skills. I don't know if he's been asked to do anything too wild. After all, this is Oregon suburbia. But the fades are perfection, and the way he blends and cuts is pure artistry in the sense that the best of you and your unique hair comes out every time. Sometimes you just want to give SIX stars, or TEN stars. Mr. Joe is that sort of guy - he's so laid back and easy to talk to. His place is a trip back in time to Clapton and Crosby Stills Nash - memorabilia is scattered on the walls - really nice, clean stuff. There is a pool table for guests to enjoy, bald man with magnetic hair you can "grow", Etch-a-Sketch for the kids (well, okay, I played it) but most of all? He took 2 feet of my husband's hair and shaped him up so nicely that we both can hardly tell he made a drastic change. I have to say that I was very impressed with my haircut. I went to Joe's for the first time after reading many positive reviews online. Joe cut my hair just the way I wanted it. In addition to his awesome haircutting skills, he is also a great conversationalist. The store is decorated in a certain way so that it reminds customers of an old-fashioned barber shop. It is also very clean. I can't think of any negative points, but it would be nice if Joe had one of those hair vacuums that remove leftover hair from your scalp/neck. I have a pretty difficult head of hair, lots of grooves in my skull and cowlicks all over the place. I've struggled to find a barber that can not only cater to it but can explain why he cuts hair in a certain way that prevents some of those "problem" areas from showing up.
