Well this is just the cutest, small town, USA bbq joint around! I happened upon this hidden gem on my way back from the Linton Freedom Festival Parade on the 4th of July. Starving, I was in search of somewhere that was opened on a holiday and serving up some yummy food and I found both in Joe's! This building is located right off the main drag in Clay City and you enter from the alley. The outside of the building is adorned in old street signs and inside with old-school memorabilia - gas station signage in a diner-style setting. Cute to boot! Even the bathroom was decorated with old comic strips and pages out of magazines. The sink countertop was lined with bottle caps that I may copy in my next house project ;) I ordered up some rib tips, mac and cheese, and green beans and all entrees come with some Texas toast. I was in between ordering the beef brisket or rib tips and the staff all pointed me towards the rib tips and I'm so glad they did because man oh man, they were fall-off-the-bone delightful and the mac and cheese had a strong pepper flavor, which was unexpected but delicious. The green beans were good, nothing too exciting there - I was trying to be healthy. I should have gone with the sweet potato casserole or fries. Next time for sure! I have eaten here a many times. The restaurant has an interesting decor. Its decorated in old signage and collectibles its located in a garage in an alley. The food is pretty good. The best I have had their is the ribeye steak sandwich and the brisket. I have tried there pulled pork and pulled chicken and they were dry. I tried all of the sauces and did not find one that I was a big fan of. The sides that stood out to me was the onion tanglers and the french fries. I also that the prices were on the high side. The restaurant is clean and the staff is well trained and friendly. I do like that they have two TV's and they play a lot of classic music videos on them. Our family stopped here on our way through town recently. We come this way annually when taking our kids to Shakamak for camp. This year we made a new tradition - Joe's Garage! We will definitely stop here again. We ordered Joe's sampler platter for 3 people. It was plenty of meat for 2 big eaters or 3-4 smaller portions. Our daughter ordered the chicken bites basket. Our compliments to the chef! Not only was there plenty of food, but it was quite tasty as well! It was served with a variety of BBQ sauces-we each like a different one. Worth The Drive! I am actually eating leftovers as I write this review! Joes is a nice small garage located in an alley in Clay City. You can park in back or out front and they have a sidewalk built just for them leading to their entrance. Joes is decorated with street signs and tools and all kinds of other memorabilia that gives off a great feel to the restaurant. There isn't a lot of seating so if it's full when you get there, hang around and wait for a table to open up. You won't regret it! Our party got the Fried Jalepenos for an appetizer which were really good. Just a little bit of heat. I got Joes Sampler which included large portions of pulled pork, chicken, brisket, and a marinated beef of some sort. Then it also came with 2 sides. I chose Mac and Cheese that was awesome! I think it had garlic in it. And I got Sweet Potato Fries which had brown sugar and syrup on them. Also amazing. Then of course Texas toast. The size of this meal is huge. I turned it into 3 meals for myself. It's that big! Joes has 4 homemade BBQ sauces, Hickory, Sweet & Spicy, Moms and an Apple BBQ - Yes, Apple! They're all really good! We also had their Fried Tenderloin which looked amazing. It wasn't the huge tenderloins, it was a good sized homemade and very flavorful tenderloin though. And we also got the Ribeye Sandwich which I was told was really good as well. They serve Pepsi products and a few uncommon drinks like XXX Rootbeer and Choc Cola amongst others. The price is very reasonable and the quantity of food surpasses any BBQ joint around here! I will be back for sure. I'm already looking forward to it! Oh. In Clay City for work and came into Joe's. I was a bit skeptical at first being that small towns places don't always get the job done but I was pleasantly surprised to find out this is a gem! I had their chicken tacos and quickly realized I should of just gotten chicken. No need to wrap it up with anything or add toppings. Great smoky flavor. I stopped eating the tacos once I realized the fries were great. Plus there's this hickory barbecue sauce... I might need to throw it in my suitcase and take it back to Orlando with me. Lastly I was able to meet the owner. He was a very nice man and I was happy to be able to get genuine small town sincere service. I will definitely be back to Joes! read more

I had received a $40 gift card from this place from my son who lives in Texas, based on a couple of these reviews, as we are originally from Kentucky, and enjoy real BBQ. Within a week or so my son paid us a surprise visit, and we decided to drive to Clay City to try this place out and hopefully get some good food. What we found was the management had all gone to the covered bridge festival, which is expected, but the service they left at the restaurant was slow and inexperienced, the meat was obviously pre-cooked and reheated, my sandwich was actually cold. There was no deserts available, and after what was far less than an enjoyable meal, they were unable to honor the gift card due to some equipment malfunction. So im stuck with a worthless gift card, a very poor opinion of the management of this business, and a bad taste in my mouth, that i most certainly would not recommend to an enemy, much less any BBQ loving friends i have. On the upside, Clay City does have an A&W Root Beer place, which i can recommend if you just have to stop in that area to eat. It will be just what they say it is :) LMAO read more

An out of the way place in Clay City, Indiana. Waitress was great and attentive. Service was fairly quick. We ventured in after the lunch bunch, so timing was spot on. Wife and I ordered the Joe's Sampler. Chicken and pit beef were very good. Pulled pork was somewhat dry and the brisket was overly tough. Was craving brisket, and this turned out to be a ginormous disappointment. . This was a lot of eating for two people. Atmosphere in this small, limited seating establishment was kind of neat and nostalgic. The restaurant is actually in a garage. We may give this place another shot at another time. Do not recommend. I placed a catering order for a graduation party. The staff read the exact details of the order back to me including the date and time of pick up. I called 3 days prior to the event to confirm the order. The staff was very rude but stated they had the order. I reconfirmed the date and time of pick up. I arrived to pick up the order to find no one at the restaurant. When a member of our party was able to track down the owner he blamed us for their mistake! Needless to say poor customer service! THIS PLACE IS LEGIT!!!!!!!!!!! I love Memphis bbq and when we came home from Tennessee I looked high and low for comparable bbq and I FOUND IT HERE!! FOR REAL FOLKS!!! It's got a great atmosphere, in the summer time you can eat outside with the garage door open. It's fun to look at all the cool decor and it sparks a conversation everytime!!! Food was great! Service sucked. My husband and I came in for lunch. Very uncomfortable experience. The waitress, didn't catch her name(brown hair up in a bun, middle aged) was more concerned with the men in there than doing her job! If she did her job as well as she flirted with all the men(including my husband) and bent over the counter, I would of been a happy customer. My drink wasn't refilled once! Stopped in at the spur of the moment and had their buffalo wings, they are delicious. I love buffalo wings and get them any time I see them on a menu and these are the best flavored wings I have ever had. My 9 year old daughter had honey BBQ wings and she thought they were great also.
