I am writing about a deliver, so I can't comment on the restaurant, but the delivery did include utensils and napkins in the bag. I passed by the restaurant on my way to work every day, and I finally decided to order from here. I wish I had ordered from here earlier because the food was so good. I ordered the rib tips and added a side of the hash brown casserole. The serving of the rib tips was such a generous portion that it could easily have fed 2 - 3 people. The meat was so tender. The smoke flavor permeated throughout. The sauce (Rick's Sweet Sauce) was just what I needed to balance the flavor. I think I could almost eat this every day and be satisfied. The hash brown casserole was very good, but as compared to the generous portion of ribs, you get maybe a couple of bites of the casserole. I just wish I'd had more. I would definitely order from here again, and I know I would want to try so many of the other offerings on their menu. read more

Staff was friendly and I think the owner stopped by to ask us how things were (it was a man who looked a lot like the guy in the picture on the BBQ sauce bottles... 3 stars is completely for subjective reasons. I've been to many BBQ restaurants and IMO the meats are made well in lots of places so how much I like the sauces influence my score. I didn't care for any of the sauces that much and I didn't put any sauce on my meats. I tried some of each on the toast, and had some of the sweet honey heat in chicken wings. But to my taste any of the sauces would have taken away from the excellent flavor of the sauceless brisket. It's not really Brisket! More like roast that lacks flavor. I asked for sliced brisket, not sure if that's sliced or chopped???? You need to dunk in sauce to make it taste ok. This was recommended in the Indiana National Road travelers' guide, and boy am I glad they did. There's lots of chain places in Terre Haute, but you gotta give Rick's a try. Surprisingly it wasn't busy at the time of my visit during dinner time, but it was still great. I had the rib tips with mac and cheese and fries. They gave you a slice of toast. Some BBQ sauce choices at your table, like from spicy to sweet. Food was excellent. The only thing I didn't like was how I had to ask to get my drink refilled as customers were not allowed at the soda fountain. I have been driving through Terre Haute for a year and have been considering trying Rick's but have had some hesitation. Part of it has been from my experience of being on the Southern side of BBQ and some of it was from previous Yelp reviews. Sometimes, you just have to fond out yourself and you will find out what you were missing. In this case, this was a pleasant surprise and the best place I've eaten at in Terre Haute. I went with the 2 meat platter with ribs, brisket, beans, and hashbrown casserole. I chose ribs because out of the photos on Yelp, they looked the best out of the meats. Plus, it seems in the North through my experience, ribs are the safest option for BBQ. These ribs were phenomenal: delicious smoky rub, meaty, and easy to chew! The brisket was so tender, I could cut it with my fork! Now that's what I'm looking for in brisket! The beans looked good and they had a unique sweet and smoky taste. I've never had beans like Rick's anywhere else. I appreciate that because so many BBQ joints pass off their beans as doctored up Bush beans. I asked the cashier if I should try the hashbrown casserole or Mac and cheese. She said the hashbrown casserole was their #1 side. I enjoyed it. It was similar to Cracker Barrell's hashbrown casserole but with a more homemade taste. There are 4 sauces: mild, sweet, sweet heat, and hot. I enjoyed all the sauces but I really had a hard time distinguishing one from another. I really hadn't had a BBQ sauce taste like this. It seemed to be a mix of ketchup, vinegar, and chili. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet for as good as you can hope in Indiana. Rick knows BBQ and I'm ashamed it took me a year to try Rick's Smokehouse. I'll be stopping through for more Delicious BBQ! The ribs were phenomenal, the brisket was delicious, and overall everything else was good. I would give it a 4.5 but I rated it a 5 to boost the rating. read more

First time visitors, this is BBQ place off of one of the main roads just down the street from ISU. There is enough parking and it was not overly busy when we came in. The decor has a lot of old photos, license plates, signs and pig themed decor. The prices aren't too bad and they have a good selection of items. You walk in and order at the counter and you get your drinks from a fountain drink dispenser but someone gets them for you. Refills are free. They give you a number and you choose your table. They do have outside seating. Our food came pretty quickly. Our daughter had a cheeseburger with fries and a drink, which came to $13.99. The burger was a good size and she seemed to really enjoy it. Husband had the two-meat combo and chose the brisket and ribs with fries and baked beans and he said it was very good. I ordered the rib tips with hash brown casserole and coleslaw and a drink. It was really very good and a lot of food! You also get a piece of Texas toast with your entree. The staff was friendly and I would recommend this place if you are looking for good BBQ! read more

Very disappointed. I ordered the brisket sandwich combo with hot sauce and potato salad. I returned the potato salad because it had zero flavor even after adding salt pepper. I asked for the mac & cheese as the substitute, and the cheese sauce was a processed cheese. (Think Velveeta, but not as good.) It wasn't edible. The brisket Was tough and flavorless. The hot barbecue sauce was very good. It is a little bit hotter than most things in the hot category, it's on the verge of extra hot. Definitely won't eat here again. read more

The restaurant has its own parking lot and the staff there is very friendly. There is a large dining area that has unique decorations. You place you order at the counter and then they bring your food to the table. They also pick up the trays from the table when you are done. I ordered the smoked salmon special with fries and green beans. The food came out quick and was ok. The people that I was with also agreed that there meals were decent, but not the best they have had. I had a tough time between a 3 and 4 on this one. For paying $20 per pound, I would expect the brisket to be edible. I have to admit that the flavor wasn't bad, but it was really hard to enjoy the flavor past the dry, rubbery texture. It was like gnawing on an old leather belt, so much that I needed a glass of water in order to get it down. They should have a little bit more pride in their product. The bbq chicken sandwich was very good. I also had sweet potato fries that were satisfying. We also had a brisket sandwich but it was a little tough. You cannot refill your own drinks from the dispenser, and nobody ever asked if we would like refills. The girl that took our order went by our table several times, but she decided to run the vacuum in the room while we waited to be served. The food is good if you've never had real smoked food before. I got the 3 meat sampler, pulled pork, ribs and brisket, none of them had much of a smoke flavor. I am from out of town and enjoy BBQ when I travel for work. On Monday 9/9 I stopped by around 430 and got the 3 meat sampler....Burnt Brisket, Pulled Pork and Ribs, with green beans and baked beans. Baked beans were very delicious. Green beans were average. Burnt Brisket was tender and good. Ribs were fall off the bone, but a little on the dry side. Pulled pork was hideous and dry! I wanted to love this place. In from out of town...always seeking barbecue. The long was long. No problem, long line usually means great food. On Sunday, it was just a long line. I was feeling adventurous so ordered sliced chicken sandwich combo on recommendation from staff with pickle and side of fries. Chicken was moist, but didn't have any flavor. Didn't taste like anything...so sort of okay. Fries were moist as well. Not how I like fries, but also surprisingly flavorless. To top if off, waited 25 minutes after placing order. So at least I drank two Pepsi's while I waited. If I venture back, will probably go straight at the pulled pork or brisket. I will say the baked potato looked amazing. Decor and setting was pretty fun. A lot of vintage advertising signs, but not like Applebee's. Real stuff that meant something to owner or folks in and around Terre Haute. read more

There are a few barbecue places in Terre Haute that I wanted to try, but apparently they were closed on a Monday night. I was happy to find Rick's was open and ready! When I arrived I took a moment to survey the menu and eventually settled on the Two Meat Combo that comes with two sides. I chose ribs & rib tips for my meats. The cashier suggested that I try the hash brown casserole as a side and I also chose the coleslaw. I had hoped they were serving beer and wine, but it turned out to be locally crafted sodas on display. :-( I decided to take my order to go and chose to accompany my meats with their sweet heat and hot BBQ sauces. When I arrived back at my hotel and unpacked my meal, I realized I also had plasticware and a slice of garlic toast. I found the recommended hash brown casserole was a simplified version of a Midwestern potluck classic - "cheesy potatoes" (albeit much less spectacular). The slaw was lightly dressed and refreshing (just as it should be)! The meats, however, came dry (no rub; no sauce). I can understand barbecue purists crying for meats that have a rub and have been slow cooked all day not being covered up with sauce...but these had nothing. I found the baby back ribs to be not only meaty w/ little to no fat, but also came off the bone cleanly. Dipping them in the BBQ sauce, I savored each delicious bite! The rib tips, while also with minimal fat, were dry and seemed over cooked. Mind you, this could be due to the night I ordered or the fact that most patrons don't choose rib tips as regularly (as I've noticed). Regardless of this, my tips were very chewy and difficult to palate without beverage + gratuitous sauce. Overall, I was content with my choice to visit Rick's. I thank them for 1) being open, having 2) solid sauce, and 3) GREAT ribs! I'd love to make a different side choice next time and see if the brisket is a contender. Who knows, maybe I'll make a victory lap in Terre Haute one day to do just that? read more

Was out in terre haute today for some Shopping and food tasting decided to try ricks smoke house as we love bbq and we're looking for food catering for our wedding this upcoming October. We told The ladies Who waited on us and they recommended different foods on the menu that they said were good. So we ordered and got our food and first bite in was disappointment. The food lacked flavor all Around the chicken was so tough it had been over cooked ..there is no Smoke smell when you walk in..and if I go to a bbq place I expect that smell. (should have been an indicator the food wasn't going to be good) the sides and the meats were all flavorless..we ate the food because we were hungry and had already payed for it..the only thing good was the baked potato and apple dumpling ..I understand that meat will have fat on it but when a customer says they are looking for someone to cater their wedding maybe pick out more of the fat..some pieces of brisket were nothing more then big pieces of fat. We had a great time visit Ricks for lunch! The service was fast and the servers were very polite and friendly. Our food was pretty good, I wouldn't say the best BBQ we've ever had, but it definitely fulfilled the craving. My companion and I both got the two meat plates, which comes with a ton of food - don't say I didn't warn you. I had the brisket and the ribs. Both were a bit dry but the sweet chili sauce was absolutely excellent and fixed that issue. We will probably go back to buy a bottle of that sauce soon. You also got two sides and a slice of Texas toast. I loved the baked beans with pulled pork in them, delicious! The atmosphere of the building was really fun, it looks like the owner took a lot of time to collect local antiques. Ricks USED to be a great place to get your bbq. Over the years we have watched the prices skyrocket and the quality of the food drop. The menu is misleading and flavor combinations do not match the descriptions. In my most recent visit I got a sweet honey chicken sandwich. There was nothing sweet honey about it. Nothing sweet, no taste of honey. It was peppery which was not a bad flavor but very misleading based off of what I ordered and expected. My wife got the classic pulled pork sandwich. Her first bite was hard gristle. Not just a fatty piece, HARD gristle. She spit it out and decided to give it a second try. Surprised to find out that her next bite was also disgusting hard gristle. After picking the majority of the gristle out of the meat she was left with barely a sandwich. Along with that, we both noticed our food was not the proper temperature. I didn't expect it to be scolding hot but it was room temperature at best. This was very sketchy to me but I finished my sandwich anyways. Shortly after leaving my stomach was churning. Less than an hour after leaving I had puked up my entire dinner. To sum it up, I spent $31 on food poisoning. The service is fine, although I do feel bad for the young ladies working there. They are halfway servers, halfway not servers. Taking peoples orders at a register up front but getting drinks for the customers, so you have to buy your overpriced meal and then feel obligated to tip even though you don't really have a server. Got promoted for a tip two different times during my most recent visit but was confused by it considering you don't really have a server. What exactly are we tipping for? Fairly compensate your employees or have them serve so they can hopefully get fair tips. Don't guilt trip your customers into paying more. Coming from the South and ending up here on a business trip, I had to temper my expectations. I was happy to order the pulled pork and brisket combo with onion rings, mac and cheese, and the garlic toast. I was let down with the majority of these. The pulled pork and brisket were both too dry and not as flavorful as I hoped from the smokehouse moniker. The pork reminded me more of a hash-like consistency and required more sauce than should have needed. The brisket just didn't have enough fat to keep it good. Unfortunately, the sauces were limited types but I couldn't recommend them either as it was nothing special. The onion rings were a large portion and good ratio of onion to batter. The garlic toast was pretty salty but I enjoyed it. The mac and cheese seemed nothing homemade and standard out of a box almost. Finally, being my first time there, I learned that you pay up front when you first order (and even tip). I tipped the standard 18% thinking these nice girls would provide some service. No - they gave me my cup, delivered my food at the table, but did not see them once after to refill or check up on me. I did everything myself. Sorry - I'm not into rewarding someone for not doing anything. I would not come back here and will stick with Umi Sushi for better food and service coming from out of town. I love Rick's. The food is delicious. And the best thing on the menu is the BBQ stuffed baked potato. Which is why I am updating my review to a lower score. I go to Rick's specifically for the baked potatoes and 95% of the time they are sold out. It doesn't matter when I go. Lunch time, dinner time, mid afternoon, sold out. I came here two nights ago with my boyfriend. I was craving some BBQ and he suggested this place. You order and pay at the front desk, and after, you're on your own. The cashier/server was super friendly. I ordered the 1/2 rack with sweet potato fries and coleslaw and he had the brisket sandwich with mac&cheese and hash casserole. The ribs were ok at best, it was a little dry and fatty. Nothing too hyped about the side dishes except for the hash casserole, it was delicious! Overall, if I were to come back, I would most likely only order the hash casserole (which is what I should've just done in the first place).
