We've been here several times while visiting the area. We love the charm of the outdoor area and quaint well kept city. The pastries are delicious. They were closed for twenty minutes in the middle of the day. We waited a while. The customer service there was very disappointing, and while the baklava, doughnuts, and bagels were tasty, our bagels were mixed up. I also disliked how the prices are not easily visible. I paid 8$ for a JBun Latte with oat milk and it was extremely watery with an excess of syrup and burnt tasting espresso. The woman taking my order was breathtakingly rude. I was ordering bagels and pastries and then asked for a tea and coffee, and put a gallon of milk on the counter. When I put the milk down the woman behind the counter snapped in an incredibly rude tone, " I can either ring you up or get you a tea, which do you want?!" And said it twice. We're visiting for the summer and absolutely love the quaint downtown vibe of Harbor Springs. Wednesdays and Saturdays are especially the perfect time to visit downtown because of the farmers market. On Wednesday, after visiting the farmers market, we stopped by johan's for a breakfast treat. My wife had a breakfast sandwich and I had an apple fritter that was as big as my head. No kidding, it was huge. They were both delicious and reasonably priced. The freshly brewed coffee was exceptional. What a fun way to spend a lazy morning. There are so many pastries, muffins, donuts, and sandwiches offered that I could not even begin to list them all here. It would be fair to say that there is something for everyone, including frozen novelties for kids like Sponge Bob Square Pants popsicles. Smack dab in the middle of town, your best bet for parking is in one of the public lots nearby. Covered outdoor seating in the front not only offers a nice spot to sit and enjoy your donut and coffee, but has a birds eye view of the bustle in Harbor Springs in season. The donuts are delicious, but you have to get there early for the freshest ones. A variety of goodies are available, as well as flavored coffees. You can pick up a newspaper to browse as you enjoy your goodies. Johan's donuts are a must when the grandkids are in town. The food here is quite good. I ordered a toasted bagel, a pistachio muffin, and hazelnut coffee. All items were nice amounts for the price! I loved the outdoor patio space, and had a nice peaceful breakfast out in the sunshine. The decorations both outside and inside the bakery were very charming! The gals working there were also very helpful when I asked for their recommendations on sites and shops to visit. My husband & I snagged the last chocolate frosted cake donut, and we wished we could have gone back and ordered two more. It was so dang good. I'm 68 and I try to be objective. Extremely nice people. Not exactly light, fluffy and delicious donuts. For the most part they all tasted the same. dense, heavy and sorry to say greasy. And 6 donuts for $15. A little expensive but it's summer and they have to make a buck and they are very large. The coffee/espresso is not an Italian roast. It tastes like regular coffee put though an espresso machine. If you are a coffee nut like me then forget this place. The regular coffee is out in warmer pots. One person to toast the bagels and two to supervise and chit chat, and heaven forbid helping another customer while the bagel toasts. These ladies need to up their game and start hustling before summer hits. Our friends, who invited us up to Harbor Springs surprised us one morning with fresh baked doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, and crescents which were flawlessy made. There's nothing like sitting down in a nice comfortable chair dipping a glazed cake doughnut into my dark roasted black coffee (homemade brewed, not from Johan's) was reading the news online while watching the sunrise. It hit the spot, and was a memorable start to our awesome weekend. When up north again, this is a definite stop, and I plan on eating everything they have on display. My daughter had iced hazelnut latte and I had hot hazelnut latte neither of which we finished which is very unusual, the taste was just off. Their doughnut quality has decreased significantly over the past few years. Their cream and custard doughnuts are rarely even full or have anything in it. And the customer service is always terrible. I had good experiences with this business when their college students were running things, but just now had such a negative experience I will not be returning. We came in for some coffee 15 mins before closing, asking if they had any left. To which the two older women responded, "No because, you know, we're closing." Weird to dump everything out before closing. Also it was a bummer because we would have purchased something else but the rude interaction left us heading directly home instead. What a lousy way to spend memorial day weekend. Consider me a fan of their other location in Petoskey and, word to the wise, check who's working before you walk in to get a pastry or coffee. SO not worth the hassle and hateful attitudes. Hopefully it was just an "off day" and others have the positive experience we'd learned to expect from this business in such a quaint Harbor Springs location. Since we went in the off season (and in the cutting cold), the tween behind the counter was pretty apathetic to our bread and doughnut mission. In fact it was hard to get her to say ANYTHING. It was nice to watch Project Runway with her though. The doughnut was pretty good. Better than I expected actually. Even still, I doubt I'd go back there in a rush.
