THE. MOST. DELICIOUS. PASTRIES. EVER. On our roadtrip, we stopped at the Crooked Tree looking for a local coffee shop. What greeted us was the most delightful case of pastries and loaves of breads. This is a bakery with no seating. Looks to be a large operation that might deliver breads and baked goods locally. There is a bread case, a pastry case, and lots of merch. A very patient young lady was working the counter on the morning we stopped. It took me a while to decide because I wanted one of everything, but had no business doing that! She patiently and quietly waited. Finally, I settled on a ham and cheese croissant and a cherry and white chocolate scone. My husband had a raspberry danish. I did get a drip coffee in the end. The ham and cheese croissant was crisp and flaky with the perfect balance of hame and gruyere. I have not had a scone this good. Ever. Not even in Ireland! If you "do not like scones," these are worth the try! We snacked on the pastries in the car so along with Lake Michigan sand, my car now has lots of flakes of our delicious pastries. Like sand, it's impossible not to leave remnants of the goodness behind. Tip: if you are not local, buy more than you need!! I wish I had. read more

Food- the "Queen Amman" was sweet and crispy but not extraordinary. Brioche cinnamon rolls were disappointing. Texture was not soft and pillowy but somewhat hard. Flavor if cinnamon rolls were more spicy maple. Chocolate chip cookies were not good at all. I found them to be soft yet the flavor to be different. Oatmeal cookie was over baked. Service- fast and fair Ambiance- small non-rustic bakery I would not recommend this place as none of the baked goods that I purchased were tasty. Very disappointing. read more

I heard about Crooked Tree Breadworks on a recent trip to Petoskey and dropped by on my last day in the area. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to visit until near the end of the day and at that point they had sold out of most of their items, including the famous pepper parmesan rolls. They still had a few items left and we decided to pick up two of them. Kouign Amann ($4.95) - The caramelization of the sugar on this pastry is on point. The bottom has a layer of sugar that has melted into a glaze with extreme caramelization, almost on the verge of being burnt. If it had been left in the oven for a few moments more, it would probably have started to develop an acrid taste. Luckily, it was pulled out at just the right time. Even the sides of this pastry have been graced with sweetness and a top layer of thicker sugar crystals/grains adds an amazing crunch. While the kouign amann may not have as many thin laminated layers as a croissant, there is still an excellent buttery interior which helps balance the outside sweetness. The interior is fluffy and layered well into an even honey comb pattern. This kouign amann exceeded my expectations. (5/5) 3:00 O'clock Baguette ($5.90) - Yikes, this is by far the most expensive baguette I've ever bought. I was kind of dreading it when I first felt the baguette through the bag - it seemed a bit soft and limpy. When I tore into it soon afterwards, I found my concerns to be somewhat unfounded. By somewhat I mean that yes, there is hardly a crust on the baguette, but the interior still exhibits a nice chew and the flavor is very well developed. It's a decent baguette, but nothing outstanding. Perhaps the crust would be better earlier in the day when fresh baked? (4/5) I was definitely surprised by the quality of the baked goods at Crooked Tree Breadworks. I'll have to revisit earlier in the day on my next visit to the area so I can try more of their breads and pastries. read more

I am bakery-fan and enjoy stopping by any and all bakeries on our travels. We have visited Crooked Tree Breadworks in the past; can't believe I'm just now leaving a review. Long overdue. Crooked Tree Breadworks is easily on my top-five all time list of favorite bakeries. They specialize in sourdough produced and have many different varieties of sourdough loaves to choose from. Their cherry pecan loaf is a must. We ate almost half of our loaf in the campground and needed to head back for another to bring home. We also love their addictive granola; the name says it all. Of course, their jumbo cookies by the same name are to die for. And where do I begins with the pastries? So many beautiful and delicious choices. They truly are a work of art. Each pasty looks to be near perfect. The taste is beyond heavenly: soft and flakey, sweet but not overdone, light. We stopped by two mornings and could not choose a favorite treat. The chocolate croissants and cherry tarts were amazing and purchased on each trip. However, you can't go wrong with any other choice. Their brewed coffee was hot and smooth without being bitter. We noticed that each customer is greeted almost immediately. There are many staff members working in the back, yet customer service is clearly a priority. Kudos. We spent more on our bakery stops than at any other eating establishment in Petoskey! With no regrets read more

Wednesday Cinnamon Brioche rolls are my favorite. We called ahead for those and a sliced Parmesan pepper loaf. We left with some sticky sticks, a rhubarb turnover, and other delicious baked goodies. We went back later for dinner rolls but it was after 5 and they had only had 2 epi loaves left. They were an immediate hit before dinner. Was dreaming about the cherry pecan bread at Julienne Tomatoes and learned this is where they source it! What a cute little place with an amazing selection of breads and baked goods. Everything we tried was delicious. Bought a boule of Cherry Pecan ($10.25) and a ham and Gruyère croissant ($6.25). Super friendly people. Worth the drive out. read more

Excellent Bread and such. The cookies and muffins are really good. The only comment that I would make is now that they are charging over $9 for a loaf of bread, maybe they could make them larger. It takes very little expense to make the loafs a decent size and the customers would be happy to pay the newly increased price. Best bread around so I am glad they are there. $4.95 is a lot for a muffin though. Even with the sticker shock, I am a happy customer. read more

The breads and scones and cookies here are incredibly delicious. They are baked fresh daily and my tip is to get here early before your favorite breads sell out. The sourdough, pepper Parmesan, cheddar scallion scones, cherry whites chocolate scones, and addictive granola cookies are what I highly recommend. Artisan breads at its finest; I managed to arrive a little late in the game on a Wednesday, but there were still plenty of loaves to choose from (albeit, probably not as many as earlier in the day like it Thera would undoubtedly recommend). On Wednesdays, they were feature the garlic baguette and the cinnamon bun, but I chose to take the last rustic baguette, a farm bread loaf, and a Breadworks sourdough loaf. All of the breads have the perfect, fluffy interior surrounded by a hard, crunchy exterior that makes perfect for soaking up hot soup or scooping dips. However, the sourdough is surprisingly not that sour; the rustic baguette, a wheat and sourdough variation on the French classic, actually held more sour flavor in comparison. The farm bread, on the other hand, is actually mildly sweet; perfect for eating on its own! While the sourdough left a little more to be desired for me personally, I can see how it is a bestseller; not everyone likes an excessively sour taste. However, overall the breads have the perfect texture and is baked to perfection. The store also offers coffees, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and a variety of sweets and pastries. I highly recommend coming by to try your hand at a Michigan authentic artisan bakery's product. read more

My wife and son both bake bread and my wife's parents owned a bakery, specializing in Italian bread for area restaurants. We have been buying PP there for over 20 years. Their Eppie bread is great toasted and spread with tri-dip from Cross's Fish Market in Charlevoix. We have never been disappointed with any of their products. I have a physical disability and need a service dog. My husband and I went into Crooked Tree Breadworks to pick up some Artisan bread, it looked like a quai little shop. So wrong! They practice active discrimination. When we entered the store I stood right by the door and did not go any further. The first words out of the woman who was working were, "I can't let you have that dog in here." My service dog was wearing her vest and had her proper license attached to her vest. I replied politely pointing out that she had her vest on and her license was attached. I then pointed to the obvious remind her that I was at the door not going any further. This woman gave me the most hateful look accompanied by her eyes rolling and shaking her head. The most ridiculous thing was that my service dog is a 9 pound Chihuahua, that I was holding. I have to take my service dog everywhere I go because of my injuries. I am a military veteran and had my spine broken. I have a lot of metal and electronic devices that are sewn into my spinal cord now. When there is an issue such as the battery dying she alerts me. She also alerts me when its time to take my medication and she gets help when I fall. I highly advise the people who work there to ask questions and observe what's happening prior to being so incredibly rude. If someone has a service dog with them clearly there is a reason. My family and I will never purchase anything from the Crooked Tree Breadworks establishment. read more

Everything is so delicious and well done here, but the scones in particular are stellar. If you can only get one, go for the cheddar scallion. If savory isn't your thing, I recommend the white chocolate cherry or currant orange. Nice selection of bread, cookies, muffins, and more. The staff is very helpful and friendly. On my most recent visit I was behind an extremely entitled and unpleasant customer, and the employee waiting him remained calm and professional. I want to give 5 stars, but I think that would be kind of unfair. I have never been to Crooked Tree, but I have eaten POUNDS of their Addictive Granola. Honestly, it is the best snack in the Universe. Seriously. I have to get it online, but it is so worth it. Local cherries, honey, and maple syrup. Yuuuummmm. Without a doubt the best bread in town! The Parmesan Pepper bread is amazing - either fresh out of the bag, or toasted with a little butter. It also makes an amazingly good base for thanksgiving dinner stuffing! Annnnnnddddd now I'm hungry! Worth the stop! After reading reviews for Crooked Tree Breadworks, we decided to deviate from our path and go there. I'm so glad we did! I chose the Ginger crunch cookie and it was SO GOOD. Best bakery in town for fresh breads and scones. The parmesan pepper bread is excellent, but you really can't go wrong with any of their bread selections. Very good scones. Many bakeries offer scones that are usually dry and crumbly. Not here! Our favorite is the cheddar scallion. Many restaurants in the area use Crooked Tree bread in their daily menus. They also offer muffins, cookies and coffee. Stop in for a treat when you are on the Little Traverse Wheelway and need a break. read more

There is no better bread than that which is baked here. We love the pepper parmesean and think it elevates everything but especially simple egg salad. The seed bread is hearty and delicious, makes great sandwiches or toast. I also love the cherry pecan on peanut butter and jam or even as toast. Though many in the area think Tom's Mom's cookies are best, I believe Breadworks does it better and they have sweet and savory scones. Our favorites are the cheddar/chive and the Greek. So happy to find this delicious bakery in Petoskey / Harbor Springs! A friend brought a loaf of Pepper Parmesan bread to a dinner party. It was fabulous! So fabulous, in fact, that we drove there the next day to see what other delicious things we could try. We decided to buy scones for breakfast the next morning - we tried cheddar scallion (based on yelp reviews) and mixed berry. The cheddar scallion were super yummy - although they were more like a biscuit to me, nice and moist and buttery and delightful. We will definitely be back on our next trip up north to try more delicious treats and without a doubt I will be picking up another loaf of Pepper Parmesan! read more

When i walked into this place i had NO idea where i was. Its like a bread superstore? I've been driving past it for years never knowing what was really inside until i made a trip with my grandma yesterday. The walls are lined with all different loaves of bread which appear to be at some kind of whole-sale or discounted price. I'm not sure if they're close to expiration and thats why theyre cheaper, but i did see a bin of expired canned goods for 20 cents a piece? They also sell off-brand twinkies, cookies, pinwheels etc which all seemed to be so cheap to me. If i still lived in the area i'd be buying my bread here. read more
