Although in high-demand, John carved out time in the midst of a blizzard to patiently conduct an inspection of our home's basement and provide a thorough report of his recommendations. A day or two later, after walking us through his findings and taking pictures of the various areas of concern, he emailed us an itemized estimate of the work he proposed to do. Unlike other contractor's we had the displeasure of working with, he also took the time to listen to our concerns and answer questions, steering us away from unnecessary work in the process. We hired John and Johansen General Contracting to tear down a wood partition/wall that divided our 150-year-old basement (yikes!) and clear out the previous owner's debris. After John and his team cleared the obstructions, they set to work installing modern windows and frames. They also updated plumbing lines, neatened electric wires along the ceiling, and installed a hookup for a washer and gas dryer. Importantly, they also cleaned up when they were done! We were thrilled with the outcome: a safer, cleaner basement that we could finally use. Since then, we've called John back for other work around the house, but I've never had to call John to redo a job he's already done. I called John after finding him on Google when i had a leak in the ceiling. John was very responsive and very patient. He stopped by the next day to take a look and tell me what the root cause was. He found the second floor toilet was moving and needed to be reset. When he stopped by he also said there was a couple of other things that should probably be addressed as well from his professional opinion. I was truly apprehensive with any new companies since i was really trusting with other companies and they ended up either starting a job and then never coming back or grossly overcharging. I had a completely different experience with John. He asked before proceeding with roofing repair (which was a blessing since Ida happened the next month). He also suggested resetting the front gutters, which my tenants said used to pour over, but not since John took care of it! Initially i thought he was a bit expensive however i did get a quote back before he got to work and the price was more than fair for the quality of work that John and his crew delivered. John and his crew are very close and it truly shows, they were cracking jokes together and working quickly with urgency. It was nice to see. John had about 6 people working and was completed within a few hours. I was able to leave to work and come back comfortably with everything being done. John even walked through everything he did once i came back on site with great detail. I now have another issue at a different home with my tenants and John was the first one i called! John and his crew are exceptional. The quality of their work is truly top notch and they are very thorough. We had our kitchen floor redone (tile), some backsplash tile added, carpentry updated on our cabinets, new LED lighting installed above and below our cabinets, some water damage fixed in our living room, and our bathtub re-caulked. Our projects were pretty varied but everything was done with great care and expertise. Things popped up along the way but John always communicated them to me and taught me a lot along the way. He's very patient with explaining things and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is up to his very high standards. There were even some things he discovered (leaking pipes, improper wiring, and a dangerous gas pipe situation) that he brought to my attention and fixed while working on our other projects. His crew finished everything so quickly and I never had to worry about anyone being late or something not getting done. They are a really nice group of people who care about their work and clients, which is so important. I am so happy with the way my projects turned out and have zero regrets. I recently decided to upgrade my kitchen and after a disastrous experience with one contractor, my fiancé found Johansen on yelp and we were not disappointed. They came by and did an estimate that day and was able to start later that week. His team was very friendly as was John and they walked me through the entire process, making sure I was well informed and present for important decisions. After the first night of work, my stove and microwave would not turn on. I called John since my fiancé was not home and he stayed on the phone while I checked the circuit breakers to no avail. Then later that night he called my fiancé to see if the problem was resolved- which it still wasn't. So the next morning he called and paid for an electrician to come out and resolve the problem- which ended up being the reset set switch on another outlet. All that to say- he went above and beyond to make sure my family was comfortable during the entire process. He gave great tips on future repairs and upgrades that we could utilize with other contractors. But of course we wouldn't because we will be calling Johansen General Contracting again! read more

I called Johansen GC because our brand new fridge died and needed be replaced. Unfortunately the kitchen island is blocking the exit path for the fridge to come out. I was hoping i could get someone to come out, remove the fixed ( or so i thought) island until we could get the new fridge in and them come back and place the island back where it belonged. I called John and he said he would call me back when he knew he'd be able to come out. 30 minutes later he called to say he was a couple of blocks away. He came in and was able to just shift the island over in less than 5 minutes. He also took the time to show me how to remove and replace the drawers so i wouldn't damage them. I offered to pay him for the visit and he refused. You read that right: he refused and said it was not a big deal at all. John is clearly a consummate professional and obviously does not take advantage of his clients lack of knowledge about this kind of stuff. I highly recommend Johansen GC. John is a very honest, genuine and great guy. Our apartment was flooded due to a sprinkler incident caused by some 'other painters' and we needed someone to come help restore the apartment. John was very understanding and sensitive to our situation. He was able to walk-thru all the knick knacks that needed to be done to bring the apartment looking brand new. He was VERY fair with his estimates and worked with us in ensuring the apartment was restored within a timely manner. He came in with a team of 5 people and finished the job within 3 weeks (which included removal of the hard wood floors, installing new floors, new molding, repainting, and many other minor things). My front stairs were crumbling. John Johansen of Johansen General Contracting came to assess the condition of the stairs. He gave me a fair estimate of the work involved and the cost. A week later, John came and the crumbling stairs were removed. He was able to leave in place the bricks that were in good condition and replaced only those that needed replacing. All new limestone was put in place and the stairs look great. He was able to repair the existing railings and a week after the steps were done, John came back to reinstall the railings. I would highly recommend John Johansen for your contracting needs. He is courteous and professional. His men clean up as they go and I never came home to a mess. The front steps were crumbling and in need of repair. Unfortunately, the front steps are the only way in and out of the house for the tenants living on the second floor, and since the job would require multiple days to complete, we were faced with the problem of how to provide temporary access. Time elapsed, and we weren't sure how to proceed. Then, one fine day, the tenants suddenly informed us that they were going away for a week, and we contacted John to let him know.
