My first time eating here. First, the establishment had two eateries... one is a casual sport bar atmosphere the other is a more formal dining room. Entrance isn't immediately obvious the dining room is on the left side of the building from the street. The sportbar is in the right side. Whatever... I ate in the dining room. It was a nice quiet space where your can enjoy a quiet conversation. I liked that. Service was friendly and at least initially was attentive. We got drinks and menus than she disappeared! For 20 minutes! Ugh. The good news was that the food came out quickly once the offset went in. I ordered the tavern burger without bread. It was tasty with nice crisp edges without ending up dry and well done inside. I really liked the fries which came out hot and stayed crisp without all that nasty coating you find in other places. In all I was satisfied with my visit. Good, not outstanding. I will visit again. I guess that's an endorsement, right? read more

BLUF: good for what it is: basic, mostly fried pub-style food. Friendly service Went with a large group on a weekday night. Place was about half full. We were seated pretty quickly, and first round of drink orders taken. First sign this isn't a top of the line place: drinks came in disposable plastic cups. Our server was friendly, despite being a bit overwhelmed by all the orders. Got fried pickle appetizer. Not bad at all, hot and with a nice crunch. Came with a very tasty dipping sauce. My side salad was very simple but fresh, and I got a balsamic vinagrette dressing which was good. Several of us ordered chicken wings, and they came out hot and nicely crispy. We tried a variety of the sauces and toppings - all were good EXCEPT garlic parmesan: nasty stuff. Tasted like feet. Chicken pot pie was more like a thick chicken soup with a pastry on top. That said, it was very good and the pastry was wonderful. Just not a classic pot pie at all. Several got the cheesesteak, which was average. Bread was kind of dry, but it was okay. Burgers were a hit, as was the Salmon. They have some very tasty desserts, although I suspect they are sourced at Costco or something like that. I base this on similarity to those stores' offerings and the too-perfect uniformity of slices. Not to say they weren't good though. Everyone thought they were. I was with a large party of friends and they provided us great service. Large parties can be difficult but they handled it perfectly. You should definitely try the crab fondu. I think this is now my favorite appetizer. The food was also good. They do homemade pot pie. The steaks were cooked correctly and the chicken wings are tasty. read more

I went here for a fish fry to kick off the Lenten season. I am allergic to beer (tragic I know!) and I neglected to inform our server, and I got the fish and chips. The fish was beer battered and I began to react negatively to it. I let our server Kailey know what was up and she was amazing! Hands down the best service/reaction I have ever had regarding my allergies. She swapped out my entree for the salmon (which was delicious) and even threw in a free dessert! I was embarrassed about the situation but she made me feel like a VIP. I have been a bartender in the Pittsburgh area for 6 years, and I have yet to come across a server more attentive than Kailey. Decent place to go to watch a band or to have dinner. I have had a lot of their food in the past. Burger and fries how could you go wrong.

Price was good. Food was mediocre bar fare. I asked for a well done Burger and was given medium. My House Salad was a tiny plate of Spring Mix with a few cherry tomatoes. Service was slow. Waitress was not attentive; never asked to refill my drink as my glass sat empty. Atmosphere (crowd) as awful. I sat on the Tavern side and had to sit adjacent to a large group of loud, obnoxious, foul mouthed drunks who should have been approached by someone on the staff. To be fair, I'll give it a try again, but doubtful I'll ever sit on the Tavern side again. Its akin to a college dive bar. I always heard how good this place is.. not so much. I've honestly never had a bad meal here. Bar staff is great. Selection is great. Portions are well worth the money.

3 of us dined for birthday dinner. Turkey burger was moist and flavorful. French dip was tasty. Ordered pub burger medium and was served a patty bitter with so much char. I sent it back and waited for a new burger while companions ate their meals. 15 minutes later, second burger was rare inside but at least not burned outside. To add insult, another party"s bill was charged to our credit card (tickets were mixed after check had been reviewed). So had to find server to correct it. We hope the credit comes through for removing first wrong charge. No apologies made to us. There were only 4 parties in dining room. Bar must've been busier. Posters on tables said hiring and understaffed. Expected better. read more

We went to the John Allison House in Greencastle PA last night. The food was good, however, they would not honor their prices. There was a special menu the waitress had. The special menu had listed prime rib for 23.99. When we got our bill, it had the price of the prime rib as 25.99. We asked the waitress about it and she said that there was a miss print on the specials menu. It was the same price as on their regular menu so how is that a special menu. They would not honor the lower price of 23.99. We decided that we will not be going back there again. They have lost our business. read more

Positives: Server was friendly, and we were seated quickly. Large portions. Our party ordered the chicken pot pie and fish and chips. The chicken pot pie looked great but was very liquidy and rather bland. This dish also came with a small side salad with ranch dressing. The ranch was lackluster. The fish, while large, was over fried and hard. You have to enter the bar area in one door, and the dining room door is on the side of the building, so there is a definite separation of those areas; in the dining room you feel completely cut off from the rest of the building, which I guess has it's pros & cons. Stopped for dinner while traveling and could not have been more impressed! It was a Friday night around 7pm, so I was nervous it would be busy. It was not. We chose to sit in the bar area because the dining room was a little too quiet. We were quickly greeted and had our order taken. One of the appetizer specials was deviled eggs with crab, which was interesting but not bad. I'm also a sucker for fried pickles and theirs were by far some of the best I've had! My husband got a pub burger that was cooked perfectly to his liking and I got the French dip (which I was told was a fan favorite) and nothing disappointed. Everything was made fresh and was piping hot. I'm a little sad that we live three hours away and probably will never come back but if we're ever in the area again, it's a must stop! 10/10 recommend!! read more

Usually this place was our go to- really good food and the pub side really nice for sport fans! Yesterday's visit however was a disaster. The only bright note was our server- she did everything she could to try and make things right. However, the kitchen was truly a nightmare. First they were out of the fish my father ordered- but he wasn't informed about this until the rest of our food was brought to the table, leaving him with nothing to eat for a long while and the wrong beer from the bar. My steak-I ordered rib eye- so I advise everyone NOT to order this $26 dollar steak- was as thin as a minute steak, so salt laden it was inedible, and full of gristle. I could not even recognize it as a rib eye. My husband's burger was a block of char - I mean the outside was BLACK. The only one who had edible food was my mom, who ordered prime rib. I returned the disgusting steak and dad and I ordered prime rib as well- sadly both arrived tough and over cooked, though I will say the asparagus was delicious. The manager did fix the bill some, after my father complained, which we appreciated, but the really really bad food and ruined dinner made the experience pretty awful. This place has been our go to for YEARS... but after this???? I don't know if we will ever go back. read more

Disclaimer: I have not set foot in this restaurant, so I cannot speak to the table service or the atmosphere. What I can do is tell you how the manager and the staff went above and beyond when I called and asked them to do something they don't normally do. I live and work in Baltimore and sadly, one of my coworkers lost her mother suddenly this week. Not to COVID, but other natural causes. As an office, we wanted to show our support and so I searched for a place to send hot food to her family in Greencastle. This was the only restaurant who offered family-style meals via their website, but they only do it on weekends and do not offer delivery normally, so I wasn't sure we were going to be successful. I called John Allison Public House and was greeted by someone who spent the time to listen to me and sympathize instead of simply saying we can't help. Next thing I know, I am on the phone with the restaurant manager, who couldn't be nicer, and he is, in turn, speaking with his kitchen staff. Within a half an hour he confirmed that not only would they make two family meals for us on a weekday, but he would personally drive it to their house the next day so that no one in the grieving family had to go take care of it. I could not be more appreciative and I would recommend doing business with this restaurant and staff hands down. They put the extra effort in and offered kindness and excellent service when they didn't have to. Thank you so much, you all rock. read more

This review is just for the Monday 9.99 Taco Spanish Bar ...All you can eat. Tried it last night and was SO disappointed. Not sure if they even taste the food they are putting out, because it's pretty hard to screw up tacos. All the meat provided had NO FLAVOR... not salt, not taco seasoning, NOTHING. Bland and boring. The Salsa was awful. Overkill on cilantro, and onions.. The rice was bland as well as the refried beans .. Would have done better just going to a Mexican place and paid 3.00 a taco.. The service was great is why I am giving it a 2- Had one of the 5.00 Margaritas, which was good also. Just a warning before you go, in case you're tempted to try it. read more

Most times we come here, the food is mediocre at best. Today we came in to watch football as our team wasn't locally televised. We ordered 2 bowls of soup and an order of mozzarella sticks. It took 25 minutes for these to be delivered to our table. The flavors of the soup were good, but both were served barely warm (dare I say cold). For a Chilli and a Seafood Bisque, completely unacceptable. Come here for drinks, come here for entertainment, but don't come here for the food. Grabbed a burger to go today and some other goodies. I'm glad I pick up other food too. The burger was one of the worst. First off it wasn't the burger I ordered - strike 1. Waited over an hour for the food and then only brought 3 of the 4 meals to the table. the prime rib was cold and dry the Alfredo tasted like it came from a box. Food came out fast and the server was great not coming back every five seconds but also not gone forever. We have eaten here twice, both times mediocre. The owners have a place in Mercersburg, and the food there was pretty good. Not sure what has gone wrong with this place. Had dinner there on a dead Saturday night. Got off to a shaky start when I asked to not sit in the "lounge" which had a very loud and crappy live cover band. Took a while to get a server because I was put in a room they did not plan on. But once the waiter got to me he was awesome. Crazy attentive, great service. John the bartender rocks! Kids at the bar sucks! WHO does that? Menu is great, beer selection is extensive and prices are right. They don't scalp you. Have the California Chicken and the Hot Wings - YUMMO! We really have tried several of their menu items and have never been disappointed. The Bar is the ambiance, the rest could be just another chain restaurant. Turn down the lighting and kick up the decor on the walls/ceilings. Bring the live music in just a little earlier. Do not eat here!!! I ordered a burger and had to send it back because it was burnt. Ate the fries and was charged $4.00 for them. There wasn't enough fries to fill a kids meal order from McDonald's. Manager was rude!!!!!!!! First thing out of her mouth was "well you ate 2/3 of it." I had two bites. The second was because I thought MAYBE it was a just burnt corner and the rest was ok.
