I am getting soured on John & Kira's chocolates. They and many other food vendors have contracted with a company called Goldbelly to ship their orders. I am now suffering an onslaught of inescapable Goldbelly marketing emails (30 emails from December 13-25, so far). They have no Unsubscribe button, not does their web site. The Goldbelly chat bot says to unsubscribe, click that button at the bottom of their emails. There IS NO SUCH BUTTON, and the damn emails just keep on coming, all day long. I like J&K's chocolates and we bought several boxes for family and friends this Christmas, but Goldbelly is going them a disservice. I am now reluctant to buy from them again. It isn't worth this harrassment that comes as a result. read more

I have been ordering from John & Kira's for several years, especially during the holidays to gift to friends, family and clients. Their chocolate collections are unique and tasty with great quality and classy packaging. Their customer service is always dependable and responsive. When orders were late from UPS during the holidays, their customer service staff helped us track down the whereabouts of orders in such timely manner like personal shoppers, much more helpful than UPS. Best chocolate I've had in my life, and I have eaten a lot of chocolate. These nearly ruined all other chocolate for me. The dark valrhona chocolate is so rich, mildly sweet, and perfectly dense. I send the every flavor box as gifts and recipients are always blown away and become repeat customers themselves. They're expensive, so I reserve them for special occasions or for a time I feel like treating myself. They have a variety of salted caramel, figs, truffles, but I am so in love with the every flavor box I don't want to risk getting something I love less than those chocolates because of the price. If you're a chocolate connoisseur, I highly recommend entering this dark side of chocolate. ***The only downside is they're shipping issues due to the nature of delivering perishable goods via UPS. I must be the luckiest person because Nora was kind, informative, helpful, full of great suggestions. She is so knowledgeable and provided me with informaton I didn't know I needed, but was thrilled and grateful to have! I am a chocolate enthusiast, and I cannot emphasize how much I love John & Kira's chocolates. My first J&K was the everything collection, and I was especially wowed by two flavors: honey lavender and strawberry. Then I tried other collections: enchanted garden, enchanted forest, tortoises, chocolate figs, bees, ladybug pralines, ladybug medley, wildflowers, and mushrooms. I highly recommend all the caramels (bees, mushrooms, tortoises, wildflowers). The bees, mushrooms, and wildflowers have liquid caramel inside, whereas the tortoises have a more solid caramel. I also recommend the chocolate figs, which are dried figs filled with whiskey-infused dark chocolate ganache and then dipped in dark chocolate. They are better than good. Note: I've never been to the actual boutique, so I can't comment on service. The rating is purely based on the chocolates. I always go to the Farmer's Market at 36th and Walnut to get my supply of J&K. read more

I first laid eyes on John and Kira's Chocolates at Philly's Farmer's Market. The "Bees" drew me in, and they were FREE! They were handing out full samples of all their chocolates! I bought a box of 15 Assorted Chocolates for $30 and it was worth every penny! It came in this cute wooden box and the gentleman gave me 2 ice-packs to put around it for my travels back to NYC. Talk about service! Let us go through the various flavors: * Garden Mint Just slightly minty and not too sweet * Glenn's Raspberry Mmm, sweet, tart, and full of raspberry flavor * Mut Vitz Coffee Whiskey I don't remember this one, maybe it wasn't in my box * Lavender Honey Oooh, this was a GOOD ONE! Lavender, flowery goodness * Glenn's Strawberry Not a strawberry fan but this was definitely delicious * Papohaku Farm Ginger Ginger was pretty strong, different but good. * Pistachi-oh! My relative sent me a box of candy for Christmas. Unfortunately I had moved my business so the box was marked as undeliverable. I contacted Customer Service on 12/23 and a lady told me that there was nobody who could re-route the shipment. I sent a certified letter AND email requesting to get the shipment over to us, at our OWN expense. Nobody every followed through with any of our calls, email or letter directly requesting assistance on the package. I wish I could comment on the chocolates but we NEVER did receive them or a follow up from John & Kira's. read more

I took a deep dive this holiday season, spending about $200.00 on assorted chocolates from John & Kira's for friends and also our own family to enjoy. I purchased the turtles, truffles, and also a variety of English toffee. The chocolates are packaged well, which is nice for gifting. And, after reading a handful of reviews, I learned that the products are made from ingredients that are sourced from local farms....another positive. However, in terms of taste and texture, I actually like See's Candies and even Swiss Colony much better! For this reason, I will never order from John & Kira's again. In the not-so-distant past, I made some negative comments about the Philly food scene on my review of Modo Mio that seemed to have irked a lot of Philly natives. I was a bit hasty in making a judgment and offer my apologies. Having been to Philly a few times and trying many of the top rated restaurants, I have come to the realization that Philly's offerings are mind-blowingly fantastic. As a testment to that, I am writing a review of one of my favorite shops that I have discovered. We've all heard the cliche, "Don't judge a book by its cover". As much as I hate to judge anything based on looks and presentation (especially when it comes to food), desserts are a category where I feel that taste, looks, and creativity all have to perfectly intermingle to produce the ultimate experience. I first encountered John and Kira's (J&K) chocolates from the food section at gilt.com. The chocolates immediately caught my eye b/c they were in the shape of red (raspberry), green (garden mint), and yellow (honey lavender) colored ladybugs/bees. http://www.johnandkiras.com/category/Ladybugs-Bees I thought the presentation was clever and innovative. I have yet to see anything like this on the market. However, I showed these to several people and they thought the idea of eating something in the shape of an insect was repulsive. Ha! It seemed there were differences in opinion as to how the "cover" looked. The taste is quite unique. The chocolates are infused with real herbs and spices in fresh cream with "just picked" garden mint or fresh young ginger from the island of Molokai in Hawaii. Surprisingly, nothing about the taste made it stand out from the likes of the top chocolate shops in the US such as Vosges-Haut, which are in my opinion, just as creative on the taste side. What a disappointment or so I thought until I tried the caramels. All this time, I was focusing on the ladybug chocolates b/c of their visual appeal. However, the true gem was the "ugly duckling," the non-decorated, plain 'ole shaped and brown colored chocolate covered caramels. The caramels are mindblowing. The moment you bite into the chocolate, the liquid caramel will ooze out...and having a taste of that will remind you of eating raw honey. It's the feeling that you have tasted something special that you cannot get in your local market. The caramels are made of extremely high quality ingredients and they have a marvelous texture. They are extremely buttery and they glide through your mouth. My opinion is that the caramel quality is on-par or very close to the best caramels in the world (which is sold by Jacques Genin in Paris France). If I were to say one thing that's limiting it's that there is a lack of selection (no fruit flavored caramels like the mango infused caramel at Jacques Genin). There were many twists and turns throughout this journey where I was initially drawn into the presentation of the chocolates and I found treasure in an area where I least expected. I guess we should all learn from this lesson and have an open mind when trying things out. There are many good surprises in life! read more

I went to Philadelphia to visit a friend. I saw this company at a Farmer's Market and decided to purchase 2 boxes of chocolate as a gift for my Mom's friend who let me stay with her. I asked the 2 employees not once, but twice, if the products had any nuts due to my Mom's friends allergy. They said no, the products do not have nuts. I purchased this very expensive chocolate and presented them to her later that day. On the back, the packaging states that the chocolates are made in a factory with nuts. To someone who can die from this nut allergy, that matters. I was embarrassed to have given her this as a gift, she clearly could not eat it. Later, I called the company and spoke with an employee, not the owners. I got a pathetic sorry. Thank God she did not eat the chocolates and have to go to the hospital. IRRESPONSIBLE! read more

Ok so someone here has a crazy good palate. Because the every flavor box I got as a gift is mind blowing. The ganache is so smooth but what is amazing is the flavors. All very fresh but all so insanely balanced and subtle but not overpowered by or overpowering the chocolate. I have decided that his place has to be like a real world Willy Wonka. There is some mad genius with crazy skills creating flavors that are like fireworks on your tongue, but they have no physical shop you can go to so they must be hiding oompa loompa slave labor hand decorating the chocolates. This can be the only explanation for how and why their chocolate candies are so good. I mean sure the sourcing fresh ingredients probably helps but there is a mad top hat wearing perfectionist in there somewhere. read more

Having sampled many chocolates in my lifetime (Hershey's, Godiva, Lindt, Ghirardelli etc), John and Kira's is my favorite. I found them in a Consumer Reports best chocolate report and had to try them. I love the flavors they offer and that they are covered in just enough Valrhona chocolate so as not to mask the flavors. My favorites are Papohaku Farm Ginger, Lavender Honey and Starry Night. They also have the best raspberry and strawberry flavors as well. Actually, they are all great. Definitely worth a try! I also love the fact that they are involved in the community (getting their mint from a school where kids have a hand in growing it, getting raspberries from a local farm, coffee from a small cooperative in Mexico - maybe not so local, honey from a small company in PA, etc). read more

I bought the 28-piece box of "Every Flavor Collection" for $56.00!!! to pass around the table after Thanksgiving dinner. What a joke! Great chocolates when I purchased them at a famers market. I wanted something sweet so i went onto Yelp and to my surprise, I saw John and Kiras near my location at 163 W Wyoming Ave. so i took a short drive to find nothing. There's not even a building with that address. So obviously i assume obviously they use this strictly for business purposes. PLEASE DON'T go this location thinking you can buy something, its a waste. Im glad I was close otherwise if I drove a distance Specially for this place I wouldn't be so happy. Yes, I know they have satellite sales but i thought it would have been cool to go to what I thought would have been a store. These are the priciest chocolates I will ever buy with any regularity. I was introduced to this company when a girlfriend gave out a chocolate ladybug and bee as a wedding shower favor, and well, have been buying them whenever I happen to see them at the Rittenhouse farmer's market since. While I stick to the salted caramel bees (some seriously delicious stuff - soft real caramel, with just the right touch of salt), the husband enjoyed the ganache filled ladybug (I'm not a ganache fan!) and I also enjoyed my sampling of the fruit jelly candy. Service at Rittenhouse is always friendly, and I don't mind shelling out $20 for a box of 9 chocolates when I take into consideration the local sourcing of ingredients and the taste (OMG the taste!) read more

Can you marry chocolate? Because I want to marry these chocolates. My boss's wife stopped in here and sent some up to our office. We decided to use them for our corporate gifts. The chocolates are not only gorgeous to look at but they are simply delicious. You can taste the different flavors in each piece almost separately but then they come together and it is just magic. I am officially obsessed! The Every Flavor chocolate ganache squares are my FAVORITE gift to give and get (for myself). The chocolate here is delectable and I am really hooked on it. Although its not my thing, others who have eaten the chocolate dipped figs are also very impressed. I order these as gifts for family and friends for special occasions, and they do a great job. Last Christmas a shipment got lost by UPS (lucky folks there may have been able to enjoy it, I hope). I sent an email to John and Kiras' email listed on the website and they helped me out immediately! This year, they sold out of the Every Flavor boxes online....a few days before Christmas, so ORDER EARLY!!! I've ordered from them online twice now... once at Xmas and more recently for Valentine's Day. Be prepared to eat a whole box of whatever you order and this is coming from someone who doesn't care all that much for chocolate! I have tried the Peanut Butter Pralines (it was supposed to be a gift for my brother but I ended up eating them all before he even arrived!) and the Tortoises (halfway through already!)... the chocolate is thick and rich and not too sweet and the fillings are to die for. Just good quality ingredients with a great flavor AND texture. Will order again but only during the times I am willing to gain a few pounds... lol read more

I have a terrible sweet tooth, to the point where I just flat-out avoid confections, except for special occasions, because if it's really good, I won't be able to stop eating them. Well, that definitely happened to the box of chocolate truffle ladybugs and honey-caramel bees that my fiance got me. I took one bite of a ladybug, and as the smooth, rich ganache melted in my mouth I knew that I was in trouble. After sinking my teeth into a caramel bee, the fate of their brethren was decided. I very generously (no, seriously) offered him one of each, which thankfully for me he accepted. The remaining five bugs were ALL MINE, and I savored each and every bite. I have to say, the caramel has a particularly lovely flavor with the addition of the honey, and given the richness of the chocolate truffles it was nice to receive both in one box to balance out the bitter chocolate with the sweet honey-caramel. chocolate honey bees. honey and caramel and, well, chocolate. this should displace "peanut butter and chocolate" as a watchword of the chocolate lover's vocabulary. we ordered some for a family event, and john and kira's went the extra mile (and then some) to get the order just perfect - we wanted a slight variation in the packaging, and they accommodated us quickly and without issue. shipping was in a UPS box with a lot of ice packs, so they survived the trip up the turnpike and a brief respite on our porch - the interior shipping material was still cold nearly 30 hours after leaving their store. great local chocolatiers, great people, and a remarkable product. just yum in every way. read more
